So the Refereeing talking points in this game were

  • Three first key incidents
  • Referee remains focussed in a one sided game
  • Some positional issues in the first hour

I covered those key incident’s at half time the most significant being Simunovic’s yellow card which can only have been based on there not being an obvious goal scoring opportunity at the time of his tug on Cavani. TV pundits were saying there was no red card because a penalty was awarded but that is only the case where there is an obvious goal scoring opportunity and an attempt to play the ball is made and that was not the case here as the PSG player making the cross from wide had only just released the ball at the time of the offence. The second half was fairly predictable, Celtic raised their game and one or two robust challenges went in, most notable was Ralston’s rich shade of yellow tackle on Motta. The Referee did encounter positional problems at times tonight where he got into the active playing area but overall he and his team did well. But the talk of the night will be the quality of big spending  PSG and the notice served that they will be amongst the front runners in this seasons Champions League

A minimum of three minutes additional time to be played

89

RH at 2017-09-12 21:35:50

Its a matter of the Referee and his team remaining focused and seeing this game home in the closing minutes, a silly mistake from any of Daniele Orsato’s team now would be completely unnecessary

GOAL!a  headed finish of the highest quality by Cavani results in PSG’s fifth goal on the night!

83

RH at 2017-09-12 21:29:17

GOAL!Oh dear just as I blogged that, Lustic is the unlucky recipient of a deflection!

81

RH at 2017-09-12 21:27:25

As a contest the game has been a lot closer this half, however you have to admit with a 3-0 lead maybe PSG are quite happy to settle for things as they are!

79

RH at 2017-09-12 21:25:15

Neymar the Pantomime villain again tonight just as he was when Barcelona visited Celtic park in November of last year and as we said before the game with the same Referee who cautioned him that night also

76

RH at 2017-09-12 21:22:43

Yellow CardNeymar rightly cautioned for simulation as the covering Celtic defender Ralston makes no contact, good Refereeing!

71

RH at 2017-09-12 21:18:02

Alves is down injured, Tierney caught the PSG players ankle after he had played the ball, accidental though no offence

69

RH at 2017-09-12 21:16:22

The match tempo has steadied a little and both the Celtic challenges and PSG scoring has settled down!

65

RH at 2017-09-12 21:12:23

Again a marginal Goal Kick/Corner defection goes against Celtic, Roberts shows his frustration by lashing the ball away, but the Referee is feeling charitable and no yellow card is shown

62

RH at 2017-09-12 21:10:03

Some confusion as it looked that Celtic had won a corner there but the three active officials eventually settled for a goal kick which was rough justice on Celtic!

Celtic definitely raising their game this half but PSG can match their superb skills by being competitive in 50/50 challenges, they’re going to take some stopping in this competition!

57

RH at 2017-09-12 21:03:20

Reflecting on that Tierney challenge Assistant Riccardo Di Forte must have had a good view of it?

54

RH at 2017-09-12 21:01:28

Tierney blocks Mbappe by stepping across him near the touchline, a yellow card for the Celtic player would have been just had the Referee got a decent view of that, Celtic turning up the heat here!

52

RH at 2017-09-12 20:59:19

Yellow CardRalston with a borderline late challenge on Motta, it was Reckless to say the least!

50

RH at 2017-09-12 20:57:54

The Referee again getting the way by being positioned in the D as Celtic played the ball into Ntcham, he keeps going too shallow when the monitoring attacking play on the right

47

RH at 2017-09-12 20:53:35

Motta with a careless challenge on Brown for the second half’s first free kick

PSG have looked so impressive during the first half of this game and with a 3-0 half time scoreline Celtic have a mountain to climb during the second period. But there have been three key incidents. Firstly Assistant  Lorenzo Manganelli’s correct call to flag Cavani’s 15th minute goal bound effort offside, the second was Scott Sinclair going to ground just before PSG scored their first goal, again the officials got it right in my view as the Celtic player seemed to loose his balance after the most marginal of contact from Neymar. The third incident was Simunovic’s yellow card as he tugged Cavani before the ball was crossed in to concede a penalty. The law change on a player receiving only a caution where he genuinely plays the ball is irrelevant here as the ball was not in playing distance, so on the basis that the player making the cross had only just released the ball from wide out it was for me not an obvious goal scoring opportunity so the yellow card was ok and not as some pundits are saying because a penalty was awarded. The only other talking point being the Referee getting caught up in midfield particularly when PSG are building attacks, he just needs to either hold back and sweep in behind play or go more central.

RH at 2017-09-12 20:33:35

I’ll be exploring Simunovic’s  yellow card at half time , could it have been red?

45

RH at 2017-09-12 20:31:55

A minimum of two minutes additional time to be played

39

RH at 2017-09-12 20:28:18

GOAL!Cavani makes it 0-3

RH at 2017-09-12 20:27:45

Yellow CardSimunovic holds Cavani and concedes a penalty!

36

RH at 2017-09-12 20:23:53

Just before PSG scored their second goal there was incident where Brown was a little late on Neymar, it wasn’t heavy contact but he left his mark on Neymar’s ankle, the PSG player certainly let the Referee know his feelings!

33

RH at 2017-09-12 20:21:07

GOAL!Mbappe makes it 2-0 PSG

30

RH at 2017-09-12 20:17:09

27

RH at 2017-09-12 20:14:00

This is an important phase of the game as the home team look to contain their free flowing opponents without loosing their shape

24

RH at 2017-09-12 20:11:58

We’ve just seen another TV angle on Sinclair’s going to ground just before PSG counter attacked to score and I have to say that the Referee was correct, there was no offence as the Celtic forward seemed to loose his balance without any contact from an opponent.

21

RH at 2017-09-12 20:08:33

Roberts gets the verdict this time as Verratti grounds him

19

RH at 2017-09-12 20:05:58

GOAL!Neymar opens his account for Paris but what about that challenge on Sinclair in the build up?

18

RH at 2017-09-12 20:04:58

I noted in the attacking before that Ralston challenge that the Referee again got in the way as Paris built an attack in midfield, he needs to sweep behind play more in midfield or go more central getting depth as play progresses toward the final third

15

RH at 2017-09-12 20:02:45

Cavani taps the ball home, but Assistant Lorenzo Manganelli rightly flags him offside!

14

RH at 2017-09-12 20:01:47

Ralston penalised for a light touch challenge on Neymar who easily went to ground, but that’s the careless challenge he’s made on the Brazilian, he’ll need to be careful!

11

RH at 2017-09-12 19:59:10

The Assistant Lorenzo Manganelli well placed to judge that Neymar couldn’t stop the ball crossing the goal before playing the ball

8

RH at 2017-09-12 19:56:15

Looked like Motta deliberately ran across Brown and grounded him during an earlier Celtic attacking build up, difficult for the Referee to see, Brown certainly didn’t like it!

5

RH at 2017-09-12 19:52:17

Good to see that the Referee has gone more central as Paris have attacked the Celtic penalty area since that first incident

3

RH at 2017-09-12 19:50:48

Referee Daniele Orsato getting too close to play in the right hand attacking channel midfield, he needed to be more central there

2

RH at 2017-09-12 19:49:10

Ralston concedes the first free kick with a rash challenge on Neymar

RH at 2017-09-12 19:47:36

If you are watching the game on TV, Riccardo Di Forte is operating on the near side and the other Assistant Lorenzo Manganelli is running the far side touch line.

RH at 2017-09-12 19:46:09

Our match Referee Daniele Orsato gets us underway!
