I have seen some first class referee performance is the UCL this season, but I have to say that was not one of them.

I will concede that the referee’s decision making was sound and there were no key match errors, but compared to the standard of the top officials we are used to seeing at this level, this was a pretty average performance.

The Referee’s whistle tone did improve in the second period, but the other major factors were still nothing to write home about:

  • His positioning continued to be suspect and with 15 minutes to go he clearly showed signs that his calf muscle was causing him considerable problems. Could he have started the game with an injury I wonder? Lesson there is that it is never worth it – the Observer will never miss that so you will be marked down without question for not making the call to cry off the game. It is just not fair to the players.
  • His body language remained relaxed and he continued to turn his back to the ball expecting it to be crossed or kicked forwards – that is a very dangerous tactic as a lot of things can happen when you take your eyes of the ball.
  • Still on the subject of body language, I can’t help but wonder if the referee’s lack of 100% fitness was a factor in him just walking around at times and looking like he was just going through the motions.

I can credit Referee Matej Jug and his team for keeping that game under control, but if he wants to set the world alight and get games further into this competition of make that leap into the Elite Group, he will have to do much better than that. After 10 years on the FIFA list, that was pretty flat.

Celtic 0 v 1 Anderlecht

89

GB at 2017-12-05 22:32:40

Olivier Ntcham (GC 21) picks up first Yellow Card of the game which seemed to be more for effect than as a result of the challenge to be

86

GB at 2017-12-05 22:28:09

He seems to have settled down a bit now, but after his last sprint he was really struggling.

84

GB at 2017-12-05 22:26:42

This is very poor practice for Referee Matej Jug to continue when he can hardly walk!

83

GB at 2017-12-05 22:25:02

#celand #CelticFC #UCL #RSCA

The referee clearly has a calf injury

78

GB at 2017-12-05 22:21:51

Referee Matej Jug might be starting to think about closing this game out now with that safe free kick to Celtic as the Anderlecht player just seemed to make a fair attempt to head the ball

77

GB at 2017-12-05 22:19:01

The referee continues to impress with his decision making, if not with his demeanour – no one else will worry much about that, but for referees coming through hoping to make a good impression you need to be dynamic, which I am afraid Referee Matej Jug has not been tonight

72

GB at 2017-12-05 22:15:42

Credit to the referee that time with his variation of whistle tone to manage that “little” trip then a couple of blasts to get the players attentions before the restart

It sounds like some pundits could do with a bit of this from what is flying about in the Manchester United game.

66

GB at 2017-12-05 22:10:51

#celand #CelticFC #UCL #RSCA

That was another “naughty” one by the Anderlecht defender as he makes contact with the sole of his boot on the Celtic player – that was surely worthy of at least a warning if not a card for the reckless nature of the offence?

64

GB at 2017-12-05 22:08:20

After some tight offside calls against Anderlechct early  in the first half, they have consistently just got ahead of the second last defender and are being picked up again in the second half

63

GB at 2017-12-05 22:05:52

The one thing the referee will need to be alert to now will be delaying tactics from the Home team. You cannot blame them doing it, but they need to be careful not to overdo it

61

GB at 2017-12-05 22:04:00

Own GOAL! by Jozo Šimunovi? (GC 5)

That should liven this game up a bit!

57

GB at 2017-12-05 21:59:25

There may not be much going on at the moment, but I wish the referee would at least keep his eyes on the ball!

52

GB at 2017-12-05 21:54:50

Whilst Celtic continue to do what they need to do, this will suit all the officials as they do not need to raise their profiles in this half either

48

GB at 2017-12-05 21:49:53

Only 3 minutes in but the referee still looks like he is jogging through the motions

Half time Summary

GB at 2017-12-05 21:44:01

#celand #CelticFC #UCL #RSCA

Well to start on a high point, there has been nothing wrong with Referee Matej Jug’s decision making in that first half – so some may think that’s all there is to it. But there is actually a lot more to a polished performance than that, and unfortunately he has failed to impress me on a number of fronts.

  • His positioning has been suspect as he lacks urgency which leads to him standing where the players want to play the ball
  • His body language looks too relaxed to me and he regularly turns his back on the ball expecting it to be crossed into the zone in front of him. One day that will lead to a crucial call being missed.
  • What I thought was a good effort to assert his authority early by strong whistle tone, turned out to be the only way this referee knows how to blow it, which actually loses its effect.
  • The other aspect which looks like it could be improved is his communication with the players. Top referees need to stay a certain amount “above” the players and need a “little edge” at times so they are not the players “friend”, but there is a point where you do not want to look arrogant and officious.

There is another half to go yet so lets see if any of these things are addressed.

Half Time

No added minutes required in the first half

Celtic 0 v 0 Anderlecht

43

GB at 2017-12-05 21:29:46

An accidental class then which results in a knock in the face – still a foul, but no disciplinary sanction required for that

40

GB at 2017-12-05 21:27:09

That was another example of the referee half turning away from the ball that time and nearly missing the poor challenge which set up the counter attack by the Away team. That is the danger of not staying alert

34

GB at 2017-12-05 21:23:26

The referee has just set his tolerance level there by not cautioning Serigne Mbodji (A 4) for that challenge which clearly broke up a promising attacking move for Celtic

33

GB at 2017-12-05 21:21:21

#celand #CelticFC #UCL #RSCA

Not sure which AAR that was who was less than 2 yards away when he did not see that was a Celtic corner, but he should be embarrassed about picking up his wages after that one!

32

GB at 2017-12-05 21:18:52

Referee Matej Jug likes to show the advantage signal when no offence has been made – that will not impress the players

26

GB at 2017-12-05 21:15:39

AR2 Manuel Vidali was 6 yards away from the goal-line when the Anderlecht player just kept it in then – or has he just left that to the AAR – not sure that should be the AAR’s main job!

25

GB at 2017-12-05 21:13:08

My earlier positive comments about the referees whistle tone are not so convincing now as there is very little variation. The same tome is used for an offside as a strong careless challenge – that again is not best practice.

23

GB at 2017-12-05 21:11:08

Any young referee studying this referee’s style when it comes to body language and alertness is getting a great lesson on how not to do it as he only just managaes not to get hit by the ball when he turned his back on it again and is standing right in the line between the the attacking player and the goal.

20

GB at 2017-12-05 21:07:39

#celand #CelticFC #UCL #RSCA

AR2 Manuel Vidali may have had the benefit of the doubt for his first tight offside call – but that one was very poor with the Anderlecht player clearly onside that time

19

GB at 2017-12-05 21:05:53

There is almost an arrogance about the way this referee is walking around and looking over his shoulder at the ball on the edge of the penalty area

17

GB at 2017-12-05 21:03:42

Fair play to him though, he certainly knows how to blow the whistle – really good positive authority displayed as he awards another safe free kick for that careless challenge

16

GB at 2017-12-05 21:02:13

I have a bad feeling about this one – the referee has a habit of turning his back on the ball, that could cause all sorts of problems if something happens behind his back

14

GB at 2017-12-05 21:00:28

There is still a real lack of urgency in this referees effort to keep out of the way of the players

10

GB at 2017-12-05 20:58:51

AR2 Manuel Vidali had a very tight call then for the first offside of the game and there was not much of the Away players body offside when that ball was played forwards!

9

GB at 2017-12-05 20:57:19

It may be worth studying this referee’s positioning in this game as already he has placed himself right where the players want to play the ball on several occasions in this game. That is not something you normally see from a FIFA official

7

GB at 2017-12-05 20:54:19

Sound basic tactic of a strong blast of the whistle then by the referee to assert his authority early with his insistence that the free kick is taken from the right place.

6

GB at 2017-12-05 20:52:52

First free kick given for a soft gentle nudge, but I don’t blame the referee for going for a safe one after a few unconvincing decisions in the opening few minutes.

3

GB at 2017-12-05 20:51:18

That advantage signal looked like more of an effort to appease the fans than a genuine sign that a foul had been committed but play was allowed to continue.

Followed by a very poor goal-kick decision when the ball was clearly played last by the Anderlecht defender.

Not a great start

1

GB at 2017-12-05 20:48:42

Referee Matej Jug taking his time over that first throw-in right in front of the technical areas – you don’t want to get the first decision wrong there!

Officials

GB at 2017-12-05 20:33:21

#celand #CelticFC #UCL #RSCA

Today’s officials are all from Slovenia:

Referee: Matej Jug

AR1: Matej Žuni? (Technical Area)

AR2: Manuel Vidali

Additional assistant referees:

Damir Skomina

Dejan Balaži?

4th Official: Tomislav Pospeh

This 37 year old referee was promoted to the FIFA List in 2007, so he brings 10 years of international experience to this game which will have no bearing on who qualifies for the later stages of this season’s competition. That made me question whether UEFA are expecting trouble tonight, as Matej Jug can boast over 71 international appointments to date? Then I had a look at his history on the FIFA list over the past 10 years, and it shows that despite all his experience, this game seems to have been picked out as a continuous development fixture, as he has yet to progress past the Group stages in the UCL, despite being on the FIFA list for so long.

Matej was in the UEFA First Category at the beginning of 2017, so who knows, maybe he is being lined up to make the break into the Elite Group in a few week’s time? Let us know what you think after this performance on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com

Pre-Match

GB at 2017-12-05 20:27:46

#celand #CelticFC #UCL #RSCA

There is still slightly more than pride to play for tonight as although neither team can qualify for the Knock Out stages of this season’s UCL, there is still the consolation of a place in the UEFA Europa League in the spring to play for. On paper though, that is clearly Celtic’s to loose due to the current league position. The Home side were 3-0 winners in Belgium on match day two and, with both clubs losing all their other games, Celtic hold a three-point cushion in third place. Anderlecht must therefore win by a three-goal margin in Glasgow to overtake their opponents; if they do win 3-0, the Belgian outfit finish third on overall goal difference.
