Germany v Portugal

Germany v Portugal

Overall summary. There is no substitute for experience in any walk of life and Referee Mazic will now be fully aware of this fact. Whilst his fitness and movement have been excellent this has not helped him with his control and missing some critical incidents. I shall not labour the DOGSO in the first half as you have my views but again the missed penalty spot and possible DOGSO will no doubt be discussed with him by the Referee’s International Committee when they review his performance. I do believe that the big decisions played on his mind and whilst he appeared calm, his actions suggested something different. His body language did not indicate confidence or authority and these are basic skills that you have to learn from an early age in refereeing. Overall, this was not the performance that we hoped for and hopefully he will learn from the feedback he receives. Thanks for your company this afternoon – Portugal now have a lot to do if they are to overcome today’s result. Roger Dilkes

Referee blows the final whistle and Germany win easily after Pepe’s dismissal in the first half.

RD at 2014-06-16 17:51:53
2 minutes of additional time

RD at 2014-06-16 17:51:30
Correct decision for free kick. No spray needed but great effort from Ronaldo is well saved by Neuer.

RD at 2014-06-16 17:49:08
How has the Referee not cautioned Meireles for a deliberate pull. Has he lost his composure? Good offside call from nearside assistant.

RD at 2014-06-16 17:47:03
When luck is not on your side, it is unfortunate. On another day the ball would have not gone to the Portuguese and the goal scoring opportunity would not have occurred.  In these instances, you have to create your lucky breaks and whilst the referee’s fitness has never been in doubt this does not compensate for refereeing at major events when anything can happen.

Final German sub is Podolski(No 10) for Mueller. Ronaldo gets his free kick to allow substitution to take place,

RD at 2014-06-16 17:38:10
Germany is cruise control as Mueller scores his third and Germany’s fourth.

RD at 2014-06-16 17:37:23
Another big call for the Referee who actually caused the problem for himself. For me a penalty and then another DOGSO. Let us have those comments. What are your thoughts? contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com

RD at 2014-06-16 17:35:46
Referee is starting to get ahead of play hence being hit and then penalty call. Was it a penalty let us have your views, certainly Ronaldo did.

RD at 2014-06-16 17:32:56
Ronaldo plays ball out so that Hummels No5 can receive attention. Great sportsmanship even 3-0 down. Credit. Hummels off  – No 21 on Mustafi on.

RD at 2014-06-16 17:28:59
What a move by Germany but id you witness the pace of the Referee to keep in touch. Excellent movement.

RD at 2014-06-16 17:26:48
Should the Referee take stern action against Portugal No16 for clapping him? What are your thoughts? contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com

Things seem to be going from bad to worse as Coentrao injured. Can this be an opportunity for a fluid break as Coentrao leaves the game on stretcher. 19 on to replace him

RD at 2014-06-16 17:22:46
Germany sub Ozil off and Schurrle(9) on -  will this freshen things up?

RD at 2014-06-16 17:21:50
Good to see no holding or pushing from corner kicks as Keith Hackett had pushed for in his blog. Ref for thiseree can take some credit

RD at 2014-06-16 17:19:24
Ronaldo is fouled and is certainly in shooting distance for him. Spray used.

RD at 2014-06-16 17:15:34
We have colleagues logged in from around the world so a big welcome to you all, especially those in New Zealand, who we have close affinity with.

RD at 2014-06-16 17:14:24
Good flag from far side assistant, clear fouls by Germany 5 Hummels on Eder. Good co-operation.

RD at 2014-06-16 17:11:40
Portuguese not happy about non offside decision. Very tight but attacking player given the advantage on this occasion.

RD at 2014-06-16 17:09:27
Referee’s movement is still impressive in the first 5 minutes of second half

RD at 2014-06-16 17:07:47
Better decision by nearside assistant for offside – correct application

RD at 2014-06-16 17:06:37
Nani penalised for push on Khedira

RD at 2014-06-16 17:04:48
The second half starts with Costa(13) replacing Velosa

RD at 2014-06-16 16:59:59
Summary A sound penalty decision early in the game resulted in a caution being issued, when a clear DOGSO had occurred. The Portuguese should have been down to 10 men at that stage. Germany scored the first goal from the penalty spot and have not looked back since with controlled football. The second major incident involving Pepe and Mueller resulted in the correct decision, a RED card for Pepe as he head butted Mueller whilst on the ground. This was a first class decision but I believe this has unsettled this official as his control has suffered since the send off. Is this a case of the different levels of experience of the Referee – think about Rizzolli and Kuipers. As I said in my opening, this is Mazic’s first game in a major tournament. Should he be in charge of this classic encounter. Let’s see how the Portuguese will set up for the second half. The referee and his team will be discussing the incidents at half time, can he compose himself again and give a good account of himself in the second half. He needs to stick to the basics and adopt  more authority in his refereeing style.

RD at 2014-06-16 16:47:56
Referee brings the game to an end at half time with Germany well in control and winning 3-0

RD at 2014-06-16 16:46:13
2 minutes to be added and Germany score third goal from Muller.

RD at 2014-06-16 16:42:32
What are you views on the last challenge – No 5 caught him in the air with his arm. Tempo rising, do not think referee has stepped up a gear. Needs to refocus. What are your thoughts? contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com

RD at 2014-06-16 16:40:30
Referee staying calm but having a little difficulty with 10 yards – no spray – has the incident got to him.

RD at 2014-06-16 16:38:24
Pepe given red card after head butt on Muller when on ground – big call but I have to say that I agree with Referee on this occasion.

RD at 2014-06-16 16:36:36
Good player management at Portuguese corner by Referee

RD at 2014-06-16 16:36:06

RD at 2014-06-16 16:34:21
Ozil tripped and wins a free kick, Referee on the job again

RD at 2014-06-16 16:33:41
In the last move the Referee showed an explosive sprint over 60-70 metres, showing exceptionally close proximity to play. Well done.

RD at 2014-06-16 16:32:38
Germany score from corner kick – great header by Hummels. No holding by players, good to see. Germany lead 2-0

RD at 2014-06-16 16:30:21
In his enthusiasm to take Nani back, Referee has hands on him which is not recommended.

RD at 2014-06-16 16:28:21
Portugal No 11 first sub

RD at 2014-06-16 16:27:39
Good to see Referee taking on fluid, he has already covered a lot of ground

RD at 2014-06-16 16:26:30
Clumsy challenge just breaking up play, spotted by Referee

RD at 2014-06-16 16:23:40
Portuguese No 8 has had strong words from the Referee – last one before a caution. I believe that he was lucky not to receive a caution for the foul immediately. What are your thoughts? contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com

RD at 2014-06-16 16:21:28
Watch the movement also of far assistant, good sideways steps and really good flagging technique. Good teamwork so far.

RD at 2014-06-16 16:19:07
Referee’s movement around the field of play is very good. Keeping close to play and awards free kick against Nani on Lahm – good spot.

RD at 2014-06-16 16:17:35
High foot immediately penalised by Referee, sound decision.

RD at 2014-06-16 16:16:12
Good positioning and award of offside by nearside assistant.

RD at 2014-06-16 16:15:15
First 15 minutes and already plenty of drama

RD at 2014-06-16 16:13:08
You are the ref team believe this was a goal scoring opportunity and offending player should have been sent off.

RD at 2014-06-16 16:12:15
Big decision awarding a penalty to Germany with caution issued – was it DOGSO. Should player have been sent off? What are your thoughts? contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com Germany score penalty 1-0 to Germany

RD at 2014-06-16 16:09:49
Muller commits first foul immediately penalised by Referee. Started well.

RD at 2014-06-16 16:09:00
Big let off for German as Ronaldo has a shot saved – then Germany could have scored when Portuguese Goalkeeper scuffs his clearance. Khedira just misses

RD at 2014-06-16 16:05:10
Both sides are playing open football which is pleasing the crowd – Referee just letting the game develop.

RD at 2014-06-16 16:02:25
Steady start for both teams Referee  just monitoring things at present

RD at 2014-06-16 16:00:13
Milorad Mazic gets us underway in strong sunshine in Salvadore.

RD at 2014-06-16 15:49:38
Today’s Referee is Milorad Mazic from Serbia, who is officiating in his first major international tournament, supported by his Serbian Assistant Referees Milovan Ristic and Dalibov Durdevic. They must be thrilled to have been appointed to this prestigious game. We wish them all the best, including 4th official Neant Alioum from Cameroon.

RD at 2014-06-16 15:16:37

Good Afternoon, as we set the scene for our next match, which will be played at the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvadore.

When the draw for the finals of the World Cup in Brazil was completed, Group G threw up possibly one of the stand out fixtures – Germany v Portugal.

Both teams boast many experienced International players, who have also club pedigrees with some of the top sides in leagues across the globe. Many will be household names to lots of you and it will be interesting to see how they blend their skills in this opening game and how they perform on the world stage.

Will Klose, if he takes part, score again to set a new record for goals in the World Cup tournament? Will Ronaldo be the star attraction or will injury prevent us seeing the best of his abilities or will his Portuguese defensive colleagues hold strong and keep the German attack at bay?

Whatever happens, this is one of the classics. Enjoy the game and keep in touch with your comments.
