Full Time

Why not join us over the weekend here at You Are The Ref for our FA Cup coverage, and thanks for tuning in this evening.

RCT at 2015-01-19 22:53:06

Full Time

We should also give an honourable mention to Assistant Gary Beswick who gave 3 very close and correct offside decisions as Everton were developing promising attacks in the second half. All in all, a good day in the office for all the officials.

Full Time

Full time, and a refereeing performance which warrants praise. He successfully recognised a change in tempo and increased his profile accordingly, showing 5 justified cautions during the second half.  The game was always under his control and his decision making, including the 43rd minute penalty award, was commendable.

Yellow CardMore consistency in terms of formal sanctions, this time it’s Dorrans who is the deserving recipient

RCT at 2015-01-19 22:37:23

We predict an intense and high tempo final 10 minutes, keep focused and keep your standards Michael.

Yellow CardConsistent to a tee, Besic’s yellow card was fully deserved for his challenge

Have you noticed the referee’s patrol path, especially as attacks move into the penalty area.  He is not afraid to sweep wide and move at an angle towards the penalty area, which gives him the optimum view.   It’s a great lesson for those of you who operate at levels 3 and 4 where it is possible to anticipate play.

RCT at 2015-01-19 22:23:29

A second high quality offside call from Gary Beswick – great Assistant Refereeing

62

RCT at 2015-01-19 22:21:35

The referee now has his work cut-out as Yacob and Naismith undertake some WWE wresting in the penalty area – not enough of an offence to merit the award of a penalty kick – it was unclear about who did what to whom, even with the benefit of the TV replays

RCT at 2015-01-19 22:17:09

60 minutes gone, is it me, or have West Brom retreated even further into defence, they seem to be employing a “flat back 9”, and surely it’s only a matter of time before Everton break them down

58

RCT at 2015-01-19 22:15:59

Yellow Card another correct card, Morrison this time, the referee excellently positioned to make the correct decision

49

RCT at 2015-01-19 22:10:31

Yellow Carda second correct yellow in the space of 3 minutes, this time for Oviedo for a reckless challenge – allowing Michael Oliver to take firm control at the start of the second half

49

RCT at 2015-01-19 22:07:00

Yellow Cardhah – we were right – Gareth Barry with his usual sanction for the blatent and cynical pull

RCT at 2015-01-19 22:01:43

Here we go for the second half- a quick poll around You Are The Ref towers has predicted  the game’s first yellow card by minute 55, what do you think ,let us know your thoughts by tweeting us @youaretheref or why not visit our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/youaretheref

Half Time

So, with West Brom in ‘park the bus’ mode, which they clearly are (it’s not a 12-seater minibus, it’s a whopping great Midlands Red double-decker), what is the Match Official’s game plan for the 2nd half.  If you were Michael Oliver, what would you be saying to your Assistants during the break?  Of course, one goal either way changes things ……

Half Time

During half-time why not visit us at http://t.co/bhCFEx6Zzh to discuss the talking points from the weekend games

RCT at 2015-01-19 21:47:10

Half Time

Half-time, and so far the referee’s decision not to caution in the 17th minute when Gardner offended appears to be a risk worth taking as, by and large, the players have continued to be disciplined.  A stellar piece of refereeing in awarding the penalty kick when Lescott handled in the 43rd minute

43

RCT at 2015-01-19 21:45:02

First class call by Micheal Oliver – handball by Lescott, the referee well positioned and a penalty call given with confidence

40

RCT at 2015-01-19 21:40:32

5 minutes to go, would a caution just before half-time cement his match control – not that he should go looking for an offence, but if the opportunity presents itself …..

35

RCT at 2015-01-19 21:36:22

Thanks to Ian Miller @millar409 for his thoughts that Gardner’s challenge earlier should have been yellow – did you agree with him ….

28

RCT at 2015-01-19 21:30:35

A great offside call by Gary Beswick, his first major decision of the game is a correct one – well done Gary

25

RCT at 2015-01-19 21:26:38

Michael Oliver is managing to apply the advantage clause with a degree of confidence on several occasions so far.  It helps that the players are behaving themselves and the ‘temperature’ of the game is low, he is trying his best to give the players the opportunity to play and for the game to flow – but the attacking play so far has been poor

23

RCT at 2015-01-19 21:23:47

Spray time – this is working well ……

20

RCT at 2015-01-19 21:20:42

20 minutes gone and, to the untrained eye, “nothing for the referee to do so far”.  That is, of course, miles from the truth as it becomes a question of focus and concentration.  Sooner or later the referee team will have a key decision to make, it’s vital it’s the right one …… he gambled by not cautioning Gardner after 14 minutes, was that the correct decision, time will tell ?

18

RCT at 2015-01-19 21:18:50

Bit scrappy this, the game needs shape and pattern !!!

14

RCT at 2015-01-19 21:16:08

Now  then, would you deem Gardener’s challenge to be worthy of a yellow card ?  Let us know your thoughts by tweeting us @youaretheref or why not visit our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/youaretheref

It’s interesting how player behaviour can govern how easily the Match Officials can settle into the game, so far no penal offences and a general acceptance of the decisions, it all helps

6

RCT at 2015-01-19 21:05:55

6 minutes gone, nothing to report so far, no penal offences as yet ……. Just one good advantage which allowed Everton to develop an attack

here we go ……

RCT at 2015-01-19 20:56:56

Anyone out there know why the tune from Z-Cars is played when the teams come out at Goodison ?

RCT at 2015-01-19 20:55:50

It is safe to say that neither club is having the best of seasons, Everton are suffering with just 1 win in 12 games,  West Brom are in transition under Tony Pullis

RCT at 2015-01-19 20:49:16

Michael Oliver is in charge this evening, undoubtedly one of the Premier League’s better referees this season.  Simon Bennett and Gray Beswick are his Assistants, with 4th official duties down to Anthony Taylor

RCT at 2015-01-19 20:38:36

Thanks to Andrew @ryansm89  and Marios @mcsfabtos for your tweets earlier -

RCT at 2015-01-19 20:36:41

What did you think of Bobby Madley’s decision to turn away a penalty appeal from Newcastle United for handball.  He had a clear unobstructed view of the incident and here at You Are The Ref we are at a loss to explain why no penalty was given.

RCT at 2015-01-19 20:30:24

It was an ‘interesting’ weekend for the Premiership officials to say the least.  From the sublime (Mike Dean’s performance at Arsenal) to the ridiculous (Vetongen being given offside inside his own half !)
