Full time Summary :

Andre Marriner has effectively managed this game in a calm and unflustered manner. The early yellow card for Fellaini was a defining moment early in the game but on reflection a key and important moment as he set his foundation for disciplinary control at the right moment early in this game. Shaw followed correctly in the 2nd half and he chose his moments very well indeed. Basic refereeing communication skills also seen correct placement on throw ins, good hand / arm signals for free kicks and throw ins with good and timely support seen with his Assistants.

Scott Ledger correctly judged and signalled / not for offside good support for free kicks and throw ins.

Dave Bryan after an early incorrect offside judgement against Mata – he then went on to give a steady AR performance and correctly judged the Everton 3rd goal when Lukaku was not active in an offside position but he did not play the ball with Miralles and then going on to score.

Offside is a key area for Assistant Referees and I have included some thoughts for you to consider and think about  offside:

We have recently seen an number of high profile errors in respect of offside judgements. Why is this happening you may be thinking? Well I want you to consider the following:

As an Assistant Referee the key area for you to HAVE to think about is as follows;

OFFSIDE – 4 key areas to consider and think about:

CONCENTRATION

POSITIONING

RECOGNISING

SIGNAL / COMMUNICATION

We need to carefully consider practical interpretation / application of Law 11

To achieve this we must carefully consider the following areas.

CONCENTRATION – for the full game is paramount and you have to be in line with the 2nd rearmost defender at all times to make these crucial and correct judgements.

POSITIONING – you have to be in the right place to monitor the action

RECOGNISING – phases of play and reading the game this will develop will plenty of practice

SIGNAL – timing of signals – wait, wait, wait and see: use of arm signals to communicate your decision can be useful as this aids communication.

COMMUNICATION –  verbal communication / man management with players is very important as is a positive body language.

Stay tuned for Arsenal v Chelsea and Trevor Simpson BLOGGING

AM at 2015-04-26 14:36:48

A throw in is awarded to MU the referee is unsure so he looks to SL for confirmation, good teamwork as AM has not rushed his decision.

AM at 2015-04-26 14:35:06

After a challenge for the ball by Shaw on Barkley the referee quickly stops play as he indicates a head injury, good refereeing here

AM at 2015-04-26 14:32:48

Early ck to MU as they look to get an early goal back

AM at 2015-04-26 14:32:02

Man Utd sub 31 (Fellaini) off 9 on

The Referee gets the 2nd half underway..

AM at 2015-04-26 14:25:58

Half time summary –

The Referee Andre Marriner has set his stall out very well so far  – he has missed little and was correct in the only yellow card shown so far in this half – Fellaini – just after a word with him – Fellaini commits a further late challenge on Barkley and is rightly shown the yellow card. This was effective refereeing and the referee has chosen his moment correctly. There has been plenty of talking to players when the opportunity has arisen and he has also taken up good viewing positions in open play and at set piece free kicks.

AR – Scott Ledger has supported the referee with offside judgements and free kicks.

AR – Dave Bryan has only shown the offside flag once against Mata early in the game and this was an incorrect judgement.

AM will now be looking to build on his control of this game as MU come out in the 2nd half determined to get back in the game. Tempo will increase, keep a watch for this..

Half Time2-0

Half time Summary –

AM at 2015-04-26 14:17:04

Advantage to Everton played when with hindsight a free kick to Everton would have been the better option as there was not a clear advantage

AM at 2015-04-26 14:15:52

Barkley just over the bar, a close offside in the build up but it looked correct no flag. 1 minute of added time is shown by our 4th Official.

AM at 2015-04-26 14:14:25

CK to MU take a look at AM`s position, the best to view player position / movement

AM at 2015-04-26 14:13:24

AM at 2015-04-26 14:12:13

AM at 2015-04-26 14:11:32

AM has been positive on positions of players at throw ins, basic you may think but in refereeing terms important

AM at 2015-04-26 14:09:30

Free kick to MU after a few challenges. AM is reading play well and in control to date.

AM at 2015-04-26 14:07:53

Good reading in open play from AM results in a Young shot over the bar

AM at 2015-04-26 13:57:09

A slightly delay in the free kick to Everton from a MU ck but it is correct and that is what counts

AM at 2015-04-26 13:56:10

Concentration is not only a key factor for the referee but also both AR`s as they carry out their key role of offside.

AM at 2015-04-26 13:54:10

The warm conditions will play their part today and the match officials will have taken on board plenty of fluid prior to kick off

AM at 2015-04-26 13:49:12

Good close position adopted by AM as Man Utd move into the Everton penalty area.

AM at 2015-04-26 13:47:37

Good advantage to Everton played by AM, GOOD SIGNAL SEEN BY AM.

AM at 2015-04-26 13:46:32

Quite a feisty opening 15 minutes with Rooney and Fellaini returning to Everton to play always adds a bit of spice. AM is calm and showing a good strong approach.

AM at 2015-04-26 13:44:14

Free kick to Everton with the referee well positioned to judge.

AM at 2015-04-26 13:43:43

Yellow CardFellaini soon afterwards foul on Barkley 20 leaves the referee with no option but to yellow.

AM at 2015-04-26 13:42:19

Fellaini foul spoken to by Referee

AM at 2015-04-26 13:40:39

Mata incorrectly flagged offside by Dave Bryan (DB) replays show that he was onside when the ball was played to him. Correction just earlier it should have been a foul awarded for Everton – foul on Barry by Fellaini

AM at 2015-04-26 13:38:19

Fellaini shoots over the bar with no foul being awarded against Barry. This did look a clear foul and maybe the referee`s position did not assist him here.

AM at 2015-04-26 13:36:59

Scott Ledger AR in on the Technical Area Touchline

AM at 2015-04-26 13:35:39
