Full Time Summary

The main points in this game from the officials perspective were:

  • I expect the PGMOL to breathe a sigh of relief after another live game which produces no major talking points after what has gone before over the past 7 days.
  • At the end of the day that was a “typical” Andre Marriner performance. Sound and composed for the majority of the proceedings and generally kept the game where he wanted it with no key match decision errors to worry about.
  • The players helped for about 85 minutes, then it just got a bit tetchy in the end but nothing compared to some of the issues we have seen recently in other games.

There is never anything “flash” about this referee and he gauged his involvement pretty well and managed to cross the line without being centre of attention. I always get butterfly’s when Andre’s games go into the last 10 minutes and sure enough there were a couple of minor clashes which I did not feel 100% comfortable that Andre managed (or even saw) as strongly as he could. Nothing major, but if you relax at the end, you can risk wasting all the hard work which has gone before.

On the bases of the last two games I have seen where Andre Marriner referee the reverse fixture in the same season, I have to say that if he has been a used to trial this in future seasons, it seems to have worked (for him at least). It helps if the first one went well of course!

All-in-all, I think Andre Mariner has earned himself the opportunity to go home and enjoy the rest of his Birthday after that performance.

Okay @FA or @premierleague I’m so confused… I thought if a player needed medical attention as a result of a foul for which the opposing player received a yellow card, the injured player didn’t have to go off the pitch? @youaretheref

Thanks for the Tweet Reichl – this only happens if the referee takes his time to complete the caution whilst the treatment is taking place on the field of play. If the yellow card is shown quickly before player is treated then he must go off to complete his treatment. Hope this helps.

GB at 2018-01-01 20:18:28

Minimum of 3 added minutes

GB at 2018-01-01 20:17:05

There are a few “tetchy” exchanges going on out there now behind the referee’s back. Marriner really needs to have eyes in the back of his head of read whats in the players minds so he does not miss something in the closing minutes.

GB at 2018-01-01 20:12:40

Here we go ….

Yellow Card for Mason Holgate (EV 30) correct, but there was a bit of shoving missed by the referee seconds before that reckless challenge. If play had been stopped that foul and subsequent yellow does not happen.

Marriner needs to keep his full concentration.

GB at 2018-01-01 20:09:22

GOAL! Jesse Lingard (MU 14) – and that may have “killed” the game.

Everton 0 v 2 Manchester United

GB at 2018-01-01 20:08:14

Clear hand ball as the arm is outstretched to stop the ball getting past. Once again Marriner using his whistle well with a sort blast to signal a straight forward breach of law.

GB at 2018-01-01 20:06:33

It’s all getting a bit frantic now as James McCarthy (EV 16) commits a silly careless foul from behind. Marriner might need to consider managing the tempo of this one in the closing stages. His quiet words have worked well for him so far but that may not be enough. He needs to read the players minds as we enter his nemesis of the last 10 minutes.

GB at 2018-01-01 20:03:36

I mentioned the respect the officials are affording the referee in this game and he is returning it by the way he is constantly communicating with them to keep them on his side. Marriner is working hard to control this game without over-reacting as the temperature rises.

GB at 2018-01-01 20:01:08

A little pat on the back of James McCarthy (EV 16) by the referee after that advantage which did not really come off for United was just enough for him to be told “I saw it – And that’s your last one”.

GB at 2018-01-01 19:58:57

20 minutes to go and at last Everton look like they are trying to make a game of it. This could be and interesting run-in as the tempo rises again.

GB at 2018-01-01 19:56:16

Andre Marriner continues to look very comfortable in this game and the players are providing him with the respecthe deserves

GB at 2018-01-01 19:53:19

The referee seems to have found an extra gear for this second half and is moving with a lot more purpose than he did in the first half – I hope he keeps it up right to the end.

GB at 2018-01-01 19:47:50

What on earth was Paul Pogba (MU 6) jumping up about after that one? he clearly pushed his opponent in the back and Mariner was right there to see it, as he was less than a minute later when the Everton player returned the complement.

Mariner doing well to be close when he needs to make a decision.

GB at 2018-01-01 19:45:09

GOAL! Anthony Martial (MU 11)

That was always on the cards the way United have come out for this second half!

Everton 0 v 1 Manchester United

GB at 2018-01-01 19:42:53

10 minutes gone in the second half and United have raised the tempo immediately and at last we have a game on now.

GB at 2018-01-01 19:38:44

And now we are back on tract again quickly with that “safe” free kick in the centre of the field of play.

GB at 2018-01-01 19:37:37

Andre needs to be alert to those little nudges like that one which got away in order to keep this game where he wants it. It only takes one or two fouls to go undetected for the temperature of the game to suddenly go up

GB at 2018-01-01 19:35:22

Straight away we have a bit more action with that shot and good spot by the referee that the keeper got his fingertips to it!

GB at 2018-01-01 19:33:01

#EFC #MUFC #EVEMUN #efcvmufc

Second half underway.

The first half produced an average 12 free kicks but I expect both managers to instil some passion into their players for the second term if this is not to end up 0-0. The officials will need to park that first half and make sure they hit the ground running again now.

Half-Time Summary

GB at 2018-01-01 19:19:51

#EFC #MUFC #EVEMUN #efcvmufc

So far so good from the match officials, particularly the referee as that “routine” first half slipped by without any incidents worthy of discussion.

Following some of the high profile mistakes we have seen recently, this is just what the EPL needed for the second live performance of the day. Andre Marriner is never going to be in the same mould as Michael Oliver, but so far he has done everything required of him and not put a foot wrong.

It just remains to be seen if this referee can see this one out right to the end now and not spoil all the good work to keep a low profile in that first half, until the dying minutes when he stepped up a gear to show everyone that he was still around!

Half Time

Everton 0 v 0 Manchester United

GB at 2018-01-01 19:16:46

Jesse Lingard (MU 14) challenge was just careless that time and not in the same position on the field of play as the Rooney one – no card required but a strong word from the referee as to future conduct. Good rise of profile by the referee there.

GB at 2018-01-01 19:14:51

That bodes well for Andre Marriner’s alertness and awareness as he spots Wayne Rooney (EV 10) catch his opponent from behind to commit a foul which breaks up a promising move and earns the first Yellow Card of the game.

GB at 2018-01-01 19:13:01

I sincerely hope we are not hearing Jose talking about another “missed” hand ball after that ball to hand on the edge of the Everton penalty area – Referee Marriner in an excellent position to wave away protests.

If ever a game needed a goal to set it alight it is this one.

GB at 2018-01-01 19:07:30

#EFC #MUFC #EVEMUN #efcvmufc

The 7th careless foul of the game results in another straight forward free kick and once again the players are keen to help each other up – this game really does lack passion and fight! The officials wont worry about that though and continue to do well to keep out of it.

GB at 2018-01-01 18:59:54

The referees body language is deceiving so far – sometimes he looks sharp and on his toes as he uses large strides to keep up with play as it switches, but then at other times he drops his shoulders and looks lethargic. Best practice is to look alert at all times.

GB at 2018-01-01 18:57:12

Scott Ledger’s habit of looking at his flag when he gives a signal is beginning to irritate me now – not best practice. Someone will tell him if it falls off the flag post, better he looks into the field of play!

GB at 2018-01-01 18:55:07

Rare example of restart for offside offence taking place in other half! Quite correct as offence took place where player touched the ball having been offside in the united half and come back from the offside position to get involved – well done Scott Ledger!

GB at 2018-01-01 18:52:23

Andre is making his whistle talk for him with those last two free kicks, in a game of such low profile a quick short peep is all that is needed, better to keep the big blasts for when they are needed!

GB at 2018-01-01 18:50:40

The longer a game meanders along like this with  little for the referee to get their teeth into, the more important it is to keep the concentration for when the big call comes from nowhere!

GB at 2018-01-01 18:45:46

With 15 minutes game there has been very little to bother the officials so far and they have done the right thing to just keep out of it as both teams already look tired and lacking any real passion so far.

GB at 2018-01-01 18:42:32

Marriner getting right in amongst the players at that corner to warn them of the consequences of grappling before the ball came into play. Nothing wrong with being pro-active in those situations

GB at 2018-01-01 18:40:05

Minimal contact from the United player adjudges as careless play by the referee as he sets his tolerance level in the early stages of the game with that free kick.

GB at 2018-01-01 18:38:37

Good spot by AR2 Richard West who spots the deflection by the Utd player before the balls crosses the touchline.

GB at 2018-01-01 18:37:13

Having “run the line” in the Bradley Lowery testimonial match earlier this season at Goodison, I have a lot of sympathy for AR Scott Ledger as there is a very steep drop off on the touchline in front of the Technical Areas which leads to the officials running on the field of play.

GB at 2018-01-01 18:33:25

As all three teams settle into the pace of the game, I repeat what I said in the build up that I think mental and physical fitness will both be key for the match officials in this one.

kick off

GB at 2018-01-01 18:30:29

Today’s officials are:

Referee:  Andre Marriner

AR1: Scott Ledger (Technical Area)

AR2: Richard West

4th Official: Paul Tierney

Andre Marriner
This will be Andre’s first game without his FIFA Badge for a long time!

Not for the first time this season Andre picks up the return fixture between the same two teams. The timing of this one normally sorts the men out from the boys over the festive period, as the Officials can be running on empty at this stage if they have not trained and recovered sufficiently for the amount of games and travelling they have needed to prepare for over the last week. Read what the former head of Professional Referees in England had to say about the demands put on our top officials at this time of the year here: Hackett’s verdict – Referees stay safe

Andre is well experienced of the physical demands of approaching games at this time of the year, but he needs to maintain his concentration levels more than anything for the whole 90 minutes today, which he has been known to fail at during the closing stages in the past. Let’s hope he has enough left in the tank to get him over the line today.

It would appear that a lot of his colleagues have been using their games over the festive period to prepare for giving the VARs something to do when they are introduced various cup competitions in England this month – so Andre does not actually have much to follow, with the exception of Michael Oliver this afternoon it seems!

There can be no disputing that there have been numerous key match errors from the top flight of referees over the past 7 days, with so few aces in the pack to play in the big games, I wonder if it is a case of mental fatigue or just rank complacency as they all seem to be “fire” proof at the moment!

Here are the starting line-ups for this game:

This game has a little more interest than usual as the Big Sam presents his rejuvenated Everton who are on a roll, to a United team who are currently on a stroll. So look out the referee today if the Wily-one outwits the Special-one, because someone else always seems to get the blame these days when the Reds don’t win!

It will be a first for Big Sam if he does manage to pull something out of the bag today though, as Jose Mourinho has never lost an EPL game to a team bossed by Allardyce (W8 D3), making him the manager that Jose has faced the most in the EPL without losing to.

Ashley Young is suspended for three matches after accepting a charge of violent conduct following his flying elbow on Saturday.
