Everton v Manchester City

Commentary By: Rob Harris

FINAL SCORE: 0 - 2

A very polished performance from Referee Anthony Taylor who judged his involvement level well to establish a credible threshold on acceptable as opposed to careless contact, three well timed cautions, all to City and textbook positioning and movement throughout the game. As i have commented during the game this is a Referee who has worked hard to get the big decisions right, he works hard to work the penalty are and constantly changes position and through the use of quick feet gets into position for match changing decisions. The end product was a performance of high quality from a Referee who given this rate of progress will emerge as one of the Premier League’s top Referees. But the big call today fell to Gary Beswick, with that first half ruling out of Lukaku’s strike, it was as close as they get, but half time TV pictures proved that he was right, well done Gary! for good measure he was also spot on with City’s first goal as Jagielka played Kolarov onside, that too wasn’t an easy call. Harry Lennard must have experienced a tough week, but he showed good character with a steady performance today, just that first half challenge by Barry on Sagna to think about where i feel he should have signaled a free kick as he was well placed. However overall this was a great all round team performance from the Match Officials

GOAL!Nasri surely now puts the game beyond Everton! 2-0 City

RH at 2015-08-23 17:47:31
Yellow CardLooks like Nasri earned a caution during that stoppage, must have been something he said?

RH at 2015-08-23 17:46:42
The Referee is still moving comfortably despite the pacier requirements of the second half!

RH at 2015-08-23 17:45:29
Its very much end to end now, all three officials are actively involved at present!

RH at 2015-08-23 17:43:58
Corner to Everton as they try for that equaliser!

RH at 2015-08-23 17:43:07
As i watch this sustained attacking play from City, i note that the Referee is making subtle adjustments to keep the ball and players in view, this ensures that he can make an accurate decision, just thinking back to the game at Sunderland yesterday, Neil Swarbrick didn’t do this and missed a handball offence and penalty to Sunderland, Referee’s need to work hard to gain good viewing angles in the penalty area!

RH at 2015-08-23 17:39:06
Well the Referee had to move in towards the City goal there as Everton apply late pressure!

RH at 2015-08-23 17:37:18
Good call as Lukaku unfairly challenges Koarov

RH at 2015-08-23 17:36:07
With City looking so strong at the back, Everton are getting few touches in the City penalty area, its therefore noticeable that the Referee makes fewer run into the City penalty area, choosing to view play from outside of the penalty area, whereas when Everton defend the Referee needs to penetrate the penalty are to track player runs

Harry Lennard signaling Coleman offside, good call

RH at 2015-08-23 17:28:54
Jagielka going heavily to ground as Toure gains more height and catches him in the back with a knee, would have been a very harsh penalty award, i’m with the Referee on that one

RH at 2015-08-23 17:25:48
Just to underline my point about good penalty area positioning and viewing angles, Anthony Taylor was tracking play closely as Sterling set up Kolarov for that goal

RH at 2015-08-23 17:23:02
Another good offside call from Gary Beswick during the build up to that City goal, as Sterling played Kolarov in Jagielka was playing the scorer on,but it was close, well done Gary!

RH at 2015-08-23 17:20:34
FootballKolarov makes it 1-0 City!

RH at 2015-08-23 17:19:01
As we approach the hour mark, the Referee has judged his involvement level well both in terms of allowable physical contact and the timing of his cautions

RH at 2015-08-23 17:16:12
The end to end nature of this game makes it easier for all three active Match Officials maintain their concentration!

RH at 2015-08-23 17:13:24
Silva going to ground near Barry in the Everton penalty area, would have harsh to caution him for diving  as there was contact with his left leg

RH at 2015-08-23 17:12:23
As i commented in my blog during the game at Stoke two weeks ago, Anthony Taylor has worked hard with his positioning and Movement, he is always where he needs to be to get the big call right, this aspect of his game is much improved and it has raised his overall level of performance

RH at 2015-08-23 17:10:07
Just seeing a reply of Silva’s shot hitting the post, the Referee was perfectly placed to view any challenges likewise with Sterling going to ground under pressure from Coleman, getting into place in the final third is vital for correct key decision making!

RH at 2015-08-23 17:06:25
Anthony Taylor going wide as play builds in the first City attack!

RH at 2015-08-23 17:05:36
The second half has started!

Well this game hasn’t been straight forward for City, Everton have given a good account of themselves. The Referee has judged his involvement level well and didn’t show a yellow card until the 42nd minute of the match, the second yellow card was interesting as Fenandinho felt that he was hard done by for his bringing down Coleman, but credibility sure meant that a free and caution was correct? The big talking point of the half was the disallowed Everton goal for offside, Lukaku’s  strike was ruled out in similar circumstances to the Rooney strike at Old Trafford yesterday, the player appears to be level, However on the closest of scrutiny by TV Lukaku’s foot appears to be beyond the last defender, to be fair to Gary Beswick it was the closest of calls and as the and it will be remembered as a great call by the Assistant! The other  Assistant Harry Lennard has be steady, however i think he could have  helped more to signal a free kick when well placed to view Barry’s careless arm on Sagna. But all in all there is everything to play for in the second half!

Yellow CardMangala rightly cautioned for that reckless challenge on barkley

RH at 2015-08-23 16:41:31
Good offside played there by Anthony Taylor following a foul on Kone

RH at 2015-08-23 16:40:24
Looking at TV pictures of the disallowed Everton offside its pretty much as it was at Old Trafford yesterday, level

37 at 2015-08-23 16:38:05
AT had a good view of that challenge and did well to see that the Everton player had taken the ball fairly on the slippery surface

36 at 2015-08-23 16:36:44
AT seems to be very comfortable at the moment and has judged his level of involvement well

35 at 2015-08-23 16:35:46
Fantastic offside decision by AR1 to disallow a goal whilst our service was down
