Not the most intense of Merseyside derby’s that we have seen but when judging a referees performance, you ask was there any big key match incidents and if there was did the referee get them right. In this game there were no big key match incidents to be made. So then you look at the referees match control and you ask did the referee manage the players, the game and the event and you have to say YES he did and he did that very well. There was 2 cautions for reckless challenges that were correct and there was a flash point late in the second half that was a challenge to the referees match control when R33 and B17 challenged for the ball, resulting challenge caused a mass confrontation between the players of which referee Anthony Taylor got in well to diffuse the situation showing a yellow card to B14 and R14 for adopting an aggressive attitude towards each other and also showing a yellow card to B17 for his involvement in the incident. Being over critical I think R33 was lucky not to be cautioned in this incident, having said that we have to congratulate Anthony for his overall match control. There wasn't much opportunity to play advantage and his co-operation with his assistants was of a very high standard with both assistants Beswick and Cann showing excellent judgment in their off side decision making. Don’t forget Thursday 26th February You Are The Ref host a question time evening, special guest BIG Sam, Guillem Balague will all be joining Keith Hackett and myself Mark Halsey on the Panel. Doors open at 6.30pm, Riley’s Sports Bar, 80 Haymarket, London, SW1 4TE. To reserve your free place please email email@example.com

MH at 2015-02-07 19:34:08
Referee must continue to keep his concentration levels at a high as he did in the first half. He must not take his foot off the gas.

Teams coming back out onto the field of play, Liverpool to start the second half.
MH at 2015-02-07 19:22:31
Referee blows for half time plenty of bruises for some players but lacking in goalmouth action. Not to many incidents for Anthony to deal with, keeping the game flowing when possible. 1 yellow card on 37 minutes for B16 fully justified.

B11 goes down but no free kick awarded, did look to go down easy.
MH at 2015-02-07 19:10:31
B11 perhaps lucky not to be cautioned for dissent by action after not getting a corner kick that he thought he deserved.
MH at 2015-02-07 19:08:08
B16, after a reckless challenge on R10. Excellent yellow card Anthony stamping his authority on the game, first poor challenge of the game.

MH at 2015-02-07 19:02:32

Welcome to today’s Merseyside derby, Everton V Liverpool in what will be an emotional one for Steven Gerrard as this will be his last Merseyside derby before he departs Liverpool at the end of the season. Today’s match referee is Anthony Taylor, this will be a big test for Anthony as these games are full of incidents. He will need to manage the players, the game and the occasion and he must not set his tolerance level to low otherwise we could see a stack of yellow cards and maybe red’s too. Anthony has refereed 18 Premier League game’s to date with a total of 77 yellow cards at an average of 4.2 and 3 red cards. Let’s hope the ball runs kindly for him this evening. His assistants today are Gary Beswick, Darren Cann and 4th official Michael Oliver.
