Everton v Liverpool

Everton v Liverpool

Commentary By: Rob Harris

FINAL SCORE: 1 - 1

Overall Martin Atkinson managed this game well, on the whole he got it about right and apart from one key match error he controlled events well. His freshold level of careless and reckless tackles was good and he demonstrated superb man management skills in controlling confrontations including Can v Barkley and Lukaku v Sakho. He has great presence and adjusted his involvement level well as the match tempo changed, yes he got hit by the ball twice and allowed a hasty taking of a late midfield free kick which could have backfired, but the only significant blemish on his performance today was his failure to send off Lucas for a second cautionable offence for a deliberate trip, but they won’t be talking about the Referee after this game which is a better outcome than he earned a year ago. Both Assistants looked sharp, underlining the point that Atkinson’s team are offering better support that Clattenburgs teams this season

RH at 2015-10-04 15:22:01

Lukaku and Sakho, clash nothing more than handbags and two Yellow Cardcards a fair outcome, both captains did there again!

RH at 2015-10-04 15:19:55

The Referee lost his concentration there as he allowed Lallana to take that free kick too quickly and from the wrong place, fortunately nothing came of it, its moments like that, that can turn the game for a Referee!

RH at 2015-10-04 15:17:54

Its noticeable aspect of this game that Skrtel apart there has been very little holding/grappling at corners today!

RH at 2015-10-04 15:14:39

Barkley going to ground under minimal contact from Lallana, to the displeasure of the Liverpool player!

RH at 2015-10-04 15:13:39

The twitter feed rightly making the point, that the Laws must be applied even in a derby!

RH at 2015-10-04 15:11:51

RH at 2015-10-04 15:10:43

For the first time today I’m at odds with the Referee, admittedly I have the benefit of a TV replay, but Lucas deliberately tripped McCarthy there and as he his on a yellow card already he should have seen red for a second cautionable offence, surprise surprise Brendan Rodgers subs him!

RH at 2015-10-04 15:08:06

Having watched Champions League Football in the week, there are definite signs of Martin Atkinsons FIFA Refereeing credentials in his positioning, however where as some of his continental colleagues were slavish in their left hand channel patrol path, the Referee has squeezed play with his active Assistant in the final third in this game, this is particularly noticeable at times as Everton attack

RH at 2015-10-04 15:03:07

Martin Atkinson is managing this game well, despite the partisan passion of the crowd there is a clear understanding of the difference between careless and reckless challenges, the yellow cards are coming as no surprise which is a mark of great Refereeing in games like this!

RH at 2015-10-04 15:00:09

Yellow CardThe Referee was consistent there, Lucas getting the same treatment as McCarthy did a few minutes ago!

RH at 2015-10-04 14:58:15

Definitely a different tempo to the first half, so far this half has been more of a tactical contest, I’m sure Martin Atkinson doesn’t mind!

RH at 2015-10-04 14:56:29

Yellow CardMcCarthy late on Milner, the difference on that one from the Lucas challenge was that McCarthy’s challenge was a reckless tackle from behind

RH at 2015-10-04 14:54:19

Skrtel could resist a hold on Jagielka at that last corner, no surprise there then!

RH at 2015-10-04 14:51:29

Martin Atkinson isn’t always as close to action as his rivals on occasions, but what he has got is presence and impact, he arrives on the scene composed and in control of himself, consequently his words and actions have meaning and are credible, its definitely working for him so far in this game!

RH at 2015-10-04 14:48:42

Lukas on Naismith, earns words from the Referee for the Liverpool player, looking at a TV replay, it would have set the bar low for second half yellow cards if the Referee had cautioned him

RH at 2015-10-04 14:45:50

Skrtel v Lukaku that one goes to Everton by way of the Liverpool players vice like grip on his opponent!

RH at 2015-10-04 14:44:38

Despite Everton protests Skrtel was grounded carelessly by Barkley there!

RH at 2015-10-04 14:43:07

In games like this you get the impression that we’re just one challenge away from lighting the blue touch paper!

RH at 2015-10-04 14:40:48

Naismith looking to Mike Mullarkey for a free kick but quite rightly nothing doing!

RH at 2015-10-04 14:39:20

Good Refereeing there as Martin Atkinson leaves Milner in no doubt that one more careless challenge will earn him a yellow card!

RH at 2015-10-04 14:38:17

Can just keeping himself in emotional check there before that corner, he needs to watch it as he’s already on a yellow card!

RH at 2015-10-04 14:36:31

First free kick of the half as Milner fells Naismith

RH at 2015-10-04 14:35:34

The second half has started!

RH at 2015-10-04 14:24:26

Its been fast and passionate as you would expect a Merseyside derby to be but from a Refereeing point of view its been sound, Martin Atkinson and his team have acquitted themselves well so far by keeping things under control and not becoming the centre of attention. Just the two yellow cards which were fully merited and some good offside decisions especially from Stephen Child, Martin got hit by the ball once and left himself a lot of ground to make up before the corner that led to Liverpool’s goal, but other than that its gone well so far with no baggage to take into the second half

RH at 2015-10-04 14:17:25

GOAL!Lukaku makes it 1-1

RH at 2015-10-04 14:16:36

3 minutes added time

RH at 2015-10-04 14:13:49

In the play that lead up that goal providing corner, Martin Atkinson left himself a lot of ground to make as the corner giving challenge came in on Sturridge

RH at 2015-10-04 14:12:33

GOAL!Danny Ings gives Liverpool the lead!

RH at 2015-10-04 14:11:02

Martin Atkinson playing a ‘one two’ with Milner, he was just a little two forward in that left hand channel!

RH at 2015-10-04 14:09:13

Can attempts an over head kick and connects with Barry, dangerous play but no more, talking of CAN, Milner did a great Captain’s job earlier as Can lost the plot by holding onto the ball too long at the double yellow card incident

RH at 2015-10-04 14:06:30

Yellow Cardfor Can and Barkley, quite right, but completely avoidable as far as both offenders were concerned!

RH at 2015-10-04 14:03:35

Half an hour gone and no yellow cards! and rightly so!

RH at 2015-10-04 14:02:05

Stay with us on Refcam, later today at 16.00 we’re covering that Premier League classic as Arsenal take on Manchester United at The Emirates! Then at 10.00 tonight we’ve got MLS action for you when FC Dallas host Houston Dynamo!

RH at 2015-10-04 14:00:39

Referees need luck like anyone else and since that injury stoppage for Skrtel the game hasn’t returned to the same intensity level as it was before

RH at 2015-10-04 13:57:34

Great non offside flag from Stephen Child as Milner was just onside in that last Liverpool attack!

RH at 2015-10-04 13:55:40

Martin Atkinsons team haven’t been faultless this season but they’ve been more consistent and have a better track record to date than Mark Clattenburg’s team, I’m sure that’s something Martin Atkinson will be counting on today!

RH at 2015-10-04 13:54:56

Again as the free kick came in not much penalty area holding!

RH at 2015-10-04 13:54:19

A fortunate free kick as Milner goes to ground without any contact from Browning!

RH at 2015-10-04 13:52:14

This injury break as Skrtel is assessed is a welcome opportunity for the Referee in taking some heat out of the occasion!

RH at 2015-10-04 13:50:48

The Referee is operating in a left hand channel patrol just hanging back behind play, which sees him with a good viewing proximity and not getting caught up in play

RH at 2015-10-04 13:48:40

The Referee is being tested here in deciding what is an acceptable level of physical contact, a balance needs to be established here in what is and what is not going to be pulled up!

RH at 2015-10-04 13:46:54

As we expected its not a place for faint hearted!

RH at 2015-10-04 13:45:46

Barkley was a bit silly there in kicking the ball away, Martin Atkinson dealing with it sensibly

RH at 2015-10-04 13:43:25

A year on and Martin Atkinson is looking far more composed in the first fifteen minutes than he did on his last Merseyside derby

RH at 2015-10-04 13:41:50

A crowed Everton goal area at that last corner, but no evidence of any grappling!

RH at 2015-10-04 13:40:24

Good work by Assistant Stephen Child in not signalling offside against Sturridge in that last Liverpool attack as Jagielka intervened

RH at 2015-10-04 13:38:29

Careless contact from Browning on Moreno, didn’t merit the dramatic falling to ground of the Liverpool player!

RH at 2015-10-04 13:36:19

TV Replay showing that Tim Howards penalty area challenge was clean with good contact on the ball

RH at 2015-10-04 13:35:28

great midfield advantage played in favour of Everton there!

RH at 2015-10-04 13:32:49

Good delayed whistle as Lukaku was fouled

RH at 2015-10-04 13:31:41

When I blogged this fixture at Anfield a year ago, Martin Atkinson wasn’t tuned in properly at the start of the game, there were some big calls in the first ten minutes which he didn’t do well on including a nailed on penalty that was missed and some tough challenges, I’m sure he’s remembered that and he’ll be better prepared today!

RH at 2015-10-04 13:30:57

Our match Referee Martin Atkinson gets us underway!

RH at 2015-10-04 13:28:09
