Positive talking points from today’s game regarding the referee…

His recognition of foul non foul was excellent.

His recognition of careless and reckless offences were excellent.

His management of the game and body language was first class.

His fitness and his movement in gaining that ultimate viewing angle was first class.

Nicola Rizzoli is a referee that is use to the big stage and whose experience is second to none. He was excellent throughout – what a contrast to the Norwegian Svein Oddvar Moen who was in charge of the Wales game earlier on who is not nearly as experienced. Rizzoli’s recognition of offences were first class he didn’t miss a thing, picking up on the small things and recognizing the different between careless and reckless challenges which leads to the players respecting and trusting the officials decisions. Also his fitness and movement were excellent and he was assisted very well by his two assistants.

MH at 2016-06-11 21:25:26

MH at 2016-06-11 21:25:05

Intensity and temperature of the game just seems to be stepping up, it’s important that the referee recognizes this.

MH at 2016-06-11 21:22:51

Little push given against E10 correct decision.

MH at 2016-06-11 21:22:14

Yellow CardE5 foul on R22. Stopping a promising attack correct caution.

MH at 2016-06-11 21:12:50

Two good advantages played by the referee, one for Russia and one for England.

MH at 2016-06-11 21:11:39

Rizzoli’s recognition of foul non foul is excellent as is his recognition of careless and reckless fouls hence there has been no cautions to date as there has been no reckless challenges in my opinion.

Another free kick foul on E9 by R4.

MH at 2016-06-11 21:04:12

It is very important as the match officials come out for the second half to be fully focused and their concentration levels are very high, although the game has been easy so far it just takes one incident that could affect your control.

MH at 2016-06-11 21:01:05

Off side given by assistant referee 1.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:59:44

Russia to get the second half underway.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:51:09

As i said earlier a very quiet first half for the referee, at the present time he has the players trust and respect because he hasn’t missed anything of note in the first half. He has been assisted well by his assistants calling the offside’s correctly. The only thing missing from England’s performance is a goal.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:45:22

MH at 2016-06-11 20:42:55

England pressure building we must take advantage of this pressure.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:37:21

E5 inches away from making a touch that would put England 1-0 up.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:36:33

Chance for E10 well saved by the Russian goalkeeper.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:28:06

A little push by E9 correctly given.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:27:40

Rizzoli will be happy at present with his low key approach and that is helping by players behaviour.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:24:56

Great defending by Russia as E7 goes through on goal.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:22:25

England may rue their early missed chances.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:21:45

Rizzoli asserting his authority wanting the throw taken from the correct place.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:18:46

Rzzoli’s positioning and movement in the early stages is very good. He is not sticking to a central path of control, thus getting himself wide giving himself great viewing angles to see offences.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:16:16

Remember not every hand ball is a caution.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:15:46

Correct handball given against Russia.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:15:26

Careless challenge by R17 on E17 foul correctly given.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:14:51

It’s good to see referees in the tournament so far allowing the games to flow. That shows clear leadership by UEFA Chief refereeing officer Pieluigi Collina.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:12:34

Corner to England, cannot see this game being goalless.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:12:03

E20 showed a little bit of petulance when retrieving the ball to take a free kick, he hasn’t covered himself in glory this season in the Premier League.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:10:50

Had E9 made contact with the ball the flag would of definitely gone up for offside.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:08:56

England win the free kick. Both feet up E2 and R14 good management by referee.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:07:56

Foul by E6 on Russian keeper.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:07:00

Good save by the Russian keeper after a shot by E8.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:05:49

In these games it is so important England players watch their challenges as they get away with some in the Premier League but they won’t in this competition. As we don’t want to pick up early yellow cards in this tournament.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:03:26

Good early positive start by England.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:02:52

Foul by R5 correctly penalized by the referee.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:00:53

First free kick to England, it is so important to pick up small early free kicks by the referee.

MH at 2016-06-11 20:00:14

England to get us underway.

MH at 2016-06-11 19:59:48

Teams warming up on the pitch, kick off in 17 minutes.

MH at 2016-06-11 19:42:46

Good evening and welcome to you all for England’s opening encounter with Russia. We have all been waiting with great anticipation for this game to come around. If you are like me being very patriotic wanting England to do well. The Russian’s will be very strong opposition and will want to break our hearts as there are no easy games in International football anymore. In my opinion if we can tighten up on our defending we will have a great chance to qualify for the knockout stages. Lastly I would like to congratulate Wales for an excellent victory against Slovakia. Pressure already on England to get points from tonight’s game. Today’s referee Nicola Rizzoli (Italy) has refereed 36 Champions League games including the 2013 Final between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund and been in charge of 97 International matches, including the 2014 World Cup Final between Germany and Argentina. So he doesn’t exactly lack experience and is well used to appearing on the big stage. He’s elegant, understand’s the game and was voted Italia’s top referee for 5 season’s in a row by the player’s who clearly trust and respect him but he fell foul of UEFA and Manchester United earlier this season when he failed to send off PSV’s Hector Moreno for the challenge which broke Luke Shaw’s leg in Eindhoven. The Mexican stayed on the park, scored and was voted man of the match something which infuriated Rizzoli’s bosses.

He will be assisted by

Assistant referee 1 Elenito Di Liberatore ( ITA)

Assistant referee 2 Mauro Tonolini (ITA)

Additional assistant referee 1 Daniele Orsato (ITA)

Additional assistant referee 2 Antonio Damato (ITA)

4th Official Tasos Sidiropoulos (GRE)

Reserve assistant referee Damainos Efthymiadis (GRE)

UEFA referee observer Herbert Fandel (GER)

UEFA delegate Roland Albert Ospelt (LIE)

Good luck to all our match officials this evening.
