Crystal Palace v Southampton

RH at 2017-09-16 14:40:28

The Refereeing talking points in this game were

  • A solid display from Referee Bobby Madley
  • Different tactical perspectives result in the old adage of a game of two halves
  • Palace’s woes will make the headlines after this game!

A  solid comprehensive display from Bobby Madley today, the only headlines this game will make are centred around Palace’s poor start to the season. Bobby Madley adapted to this game very well as both halves of the game followed the tactical fortunes of the competing teams, the first half saw Southampton dominate possession and spend large periods of play in the Palace half where the home team defended deep. This required the Referee to maintain a close proximity to play without getting in the way, this to his credit he achieved well. Whereas the second half predictably saw Palace battle more for possession and as a consequence they finished the game with five cautions, four of which were issued in the second half, in terms of fitness and movement more was asked of Bobby Madley in this period and again the Referee was alive to this and stepped up to the plate well. The only caution that was harsh was Puncheons push in Tadic’s back which the Referee should have publically sold better as Persistent infringement rather than reckless which it wasn’t particularly. Fortunately  Bobby’s final warning to the Palace skipper did the trick and he stayed out of further trouble. Both Assistants did well particularly at offside decision making but the overall teamwork could have been better at throw in situations where three times in this game there was hesitation between Referee and Assistant.  But in overall terms this was as I said at the top of this summary a Solid and Comprehensive display from Bobby Madley and his team

Yellow CardDann picks up an obvious caution as he holds back Long to halt a promising Southampton attack

RH at 2017-09-16 14:08:01

Again not the slickest co-operation between the Bobby Madley and Assistant Lee Betts as Saints win a throw in

RH at 2017-09-16 14:05:57

Yellow CardLong shows his disappointment at not winning an earlier free kick and is cautioned for dissent, no issue with that following his opening questioning of the Referee but a TV replay shows that the Irishman was unlucky

RH at 2017-09-16 14:02:54

Despite his protests Redmond is rightly punished for a high arm as Palace win a free kick

RH at 2017-09-16 14:01:55

The pressure in this match ramps up as Palace enjoy more possession now than at any point so far as they look to score for the first time this season!

RH at 2017-09-16 13:59:29

The Referee has to be careful in his management of Palace captain Puncheon, although the Palace player has been in the thick of many things this game, his earlier caution for a push in Tadic’s back lowered the bar for me in terms of what the Referee has cautioned elsewhere this game, lets hope the Palace Skipper heeds that earlier warning amd doesn’t offend accordingly again?

RH at 2017-09-16 13:55:53

Yellow CardMcCarthy with a reckless challenge on Bertrand following his hauling down of Lemina moments before, Palace can have no complaints about that!

RH at 2017-09-16 13:52:01

With Palace committing men forward Southampton can counter attack and play the ball out wide to get those crosses in, Booby Madley is now having to put some dynamic sprints in which he didn’t need to so much in the first half!

RH at 2017-09-16 13:49:24

Puncheon revives a warning for that latest challenge which although only careless does raise the profile of a player who has already been cautioned!

RH at 2017-09-16 13:47:14

As Palace chase the game its already opening up play, so from a positioning and movement angle notwithstanding the rain,  its a different match at the moment for the Referee!

RH at 2017-09-16 13:44:00

Yellow CardA good delayed caution there from Bobby Madley following an earlier holding offence by Ward on Davis which broke up a promising attack

RH at 2017-09-16 13:42:04

With Southampton having so much of the ball in the first half I expect Palace to challenge for possession much more in the second half, so expect more battling for the ball particularly in midfield, the Referee has already set out his stall and as a consequence he could be a bit busier this half as Southampton are already showing sign of running down the clock!

RH at 2017-09-16 13:40:27

Yellow CardPuncheon cautioned for a robust and deliberate push in Tadic’s back, obviously safety first Refereeing

RH at 2017-09-16 13:32:54

The second half has started!

RH at 2017-09-16 13:24:07

A solid fist half from Bobby Madley, he’s got it right so far in my view, picking up the careless challenges and rightly applying a sanction to the only reckless challenge of the game so far. He’s not had to race around as from a tactical perspective as the away team has enjoyed much possession and its therefore not been an end to end game up until now. Bobby and his two Assistants just need to be a little shaper at throw ins where both of them have been involved with a messy decision. Other than that they’re carrying no baggage into the second half

RH at 2017-09-16 13:17:18

Half Time

RH at 2017-09-16 13:15:44

A minimum of one minute additional time to be played

RH at 2017-09-16 13:13:35

Tadic having a tug at Cabaye but the Referee plays a good advantage

RH at 2017-09-16 13:11:50

Long gets an accidental arm in the face from McCarthy, no offence committed though by the Palace player

RH at 2017-09-16 13:09:30

This certainly not a fast and open game, attacking play is more of a slower build up amd the Referee whilst not looking particularly mobile has not needed to be, could be a different matter later in the match  if one of these sides is chasing the game!

RH at 2017-09-16 13:04:47

Yellow CardCabaye is late and reckless and rightly earns the first yellow card of the game

RH at 2017-09-16 13:03:47

Still hoping to see another look at that earlier Palace attack where Soares seemed to get close to the Palace striker at the far post

RH at 2017-09-16 13:02:22

Bobby Madley doing well as Townsend was floored but Palace got on well with it and Loftus Cheek had a decent strike, Good Refereeing!

RH at 2017-09-16 12:59:00

But this time the Assistant does well as Lee Betts flags Long offside, its tight but spot on! well done!

RH at 2017-09-16 12:57:45

Again hesitation at a throw in situation this time between Referee and Assistant Marc Perry

RH at 2017-09-16 12:56:47

With Palace defending deep there are long periods of play where Southampton are camped in the Eagles final third, the Referee reads play well in these situations and doesn’t get in the way

RH at 2017-09-16 12:53:40

Long goes in a bit too heavily on McCarthy in midfield for the latest free kick

RH at 2017-09-16 12:50:42

Its been a competitive first twenty minutes and a few free kicks have awarded but the Referee has been right to do so, as the offences just reflect what is at stake here!

RH at 2017-09-16 12:48:39

Should have been good pro-active Refereeing

RH at 2017-09-16 12:48:04

The Referee intervenes before that first corner was taken to warn Bertrand and McCarthy, god pro-active Refereeing

RH at 2017-09-16 12:46:09

A bit of a delay between Referee and Assistant as Bobby Madley eventually signals a Palace throw in front of the technical areas

RH at 2017-09-16 12:44:29

Cabaye a bit high and careless on Romeu, free kick to Saints

RH at 2017-09-16 12:42:45

Lee Betts the busier Assistant in these opening minutes as Southampton make a promising start!

RH at 2017-09-16 12:40:21

Townsend tries to draw the foul by going to ground as he passes Hoedt but Bobby Madley is spot in not buying it! good work!

RH at 2017-09-16 12:38:09

Puncheon careless again this time on Soares

RH at 2017-09-16 12:36:36

GOAL!Davis puts Saints ahead!

RH at 2017-09-16 12:35:32

First free kick of the game as Puncheon grounds Tadic

RH at 2017-09-16 12:34:43

TV making a good point that Saints Shane Long will be playing off the shoulder of the Palace defenders, so its important that Bobby Madley gets into good viewing positions to monitor those tussles

RH at 2017-09-16 12:31:12

If you are watching the game on TV, Lee Betts is operating on the far side and the other Assistant Marc Perry is running the nearside touch line.

Crystal Palace v Southampton

ROBERT MADLEY Assistants: L Betts & M Perry Fourth official: Graham Scott

Neil Shipperley may have joined Palace from Saints for a fee of one million way back in October, 1996 and then rejoined Palace from Wimbledon in the summer of 2003, but the connection looming largest is surely Alan Pardew, who has managed both clubs as well as played for the home team.

Four games in” is no longer too soon for a relegation scrap, apparently, and it’s all change once again at Selhurst Park for the visit of 2016/17 EFL Cup finalists Southampton, who just happened to beat Palace at the semi-final stage on their way to winning the FA Cup in 1976.

Last time out it was easy enough for Palace, who won 3-0 thanks to two from Christian Benteke plus a goal from James Tomkins. Neil Swarbrick was in charge of Pardew and Puel’s men and kept the yellow card count down to four. Another player to have represented both clubs, Jason Puncheon, became Palace’s record Premier League assist provider that day.

Bobby Madley was promoted to SG1 in 2013, having made his top flight debut in a 3-0 home defeat many Saints fans will remember. First a clash between Gaston Ramirez and West Brom’s Marc Antoine Fortune saw Madley dismiss both, before Danny Fox followed them for a reckless challenge on Steven Reid. In case you’re wondering, it was not Roy Hodgson but Steve Clarke in the Baggies hotseat that day, with Mauricio Pochettino his opposite number.

And if you’re off to Selhurst Park and need a ride, do look out for Shipperley… because these days he’s one London cabbie who will gladly take you south of the river.

All you need to know about Robert Madley:

Early season pressure has without doubt played its part in managerial fortunes of these two teams. We now progress into the post de Boer era at Palace with the appointment of Roy Hodgson whilst Saints manger Mauricio Pellegrino seems unable to ignite his players any more than his predecessor Clade Puel. The Eagles will desperate to avoid a fifth defeat in a row, as for the visitors it’s a matter of finding the back of the net which seems to be the cause of much angst for the red half of Hampshire!
