Thanks for tuning in, it’s time for me to hand over quickly to my colleague Rob Harris who continues our coverage with the Everton v Tottenham game from Goodison Park, which kicks off at 4pm UK time. Have a happy 2016 and bye for now.

Well that was a ‘good day at the office’ for Kevin Friend and his team – nothing controversial, the cautions were well timed and assisted him to retain control, another sound and solid performance, highlighted by the commendable advantage in the lead up to Chelsea’s 2nd and all important goal. Chelsea were streets ahead over the 90+ minutes, showing the lack of depth in the Palace squad.
RCT at 2016-01-03 16:20:08
Great stamina levels exhibited by the referee as Chelsea break full length in the closing stages of the game …
RCT at 2016-01-03 16:18:34
Calm, calm, calm, kill the game – another object lesson in buying some time …..

There is a school of thought amongst senior referees, especially when officiating abroad, that the referee should always look to even out the caution count across both teams in the interest of balance and fairness. I do not necessarily agree, for example, why in this case should Kevin Friend go ‘looking for’ a Chelsea caution when one is not deserved.
RCT at 2016-01-03 16:09:58
Good consistent refereeing, Scott Dann fully deserving the caution for his cynical challenge.
RCT at 2016-01-03 16:08:08
Kevin Friend’s positioning has been a key aspect of his game today – well positioned again to award the corner-kick.
RCT at 2016-01-03 16:06:32
It’s almost like we are playing out time already, Palace look (and are) beaten and they looked tired and jaded after the bust Christmas / New Year period – but focus is still the key word …..
RCT at 2016-01-03 16:02:52
15 to go and this now becomes a focus and concentration exercise for the match officials, it’s important that standards are maintained to see the game to a safe and successful conclusion.
RCT at 2016-01-03 15:58:13
20 minutes of the game to go and my money is on Chelsea continuing to keep possession and kill the game – no need for them to ‘park the bus’, just keep the ball.
RCT at 2016-01-03 15:55:14
Surely game, set and match as Costa scores following an error by Hennessey in the Palace goal ….
RCT at 2016-01-03 15:53:09
Great positioning again – Zaha offends and the referee is on hand to correctly penalise him.
RCT at 2016-01-03 15:50:59
But the referee quickly makes up for his ‘error’ with a first class advantage application which led directly to Chelsea’s 2nd goal, positively thumped home by Willian
RCT at 2016-01-03 15:48:58
Perhaps the referee’s first error of the game, Costa should have been awarded a free-kick which led to a goal scoring opportunity to Palace
RCT at 2016-01-03 15:45:33
Jedinalk is correctly cautioned, the challenge was poor and it was the players second offence is a very short space of time’
RCT at 2016-01-03 15:38:55
Kevin Friend showing there the value of lateral movement across the field of play as attacks develop wide in the final third, an object lesson in movement for any aspiring referee.
RCT at 2016-01-03 15:36:23
Will Chelsea look to have what they hold or will they keep pressing forward – Palace will need to take a gamble at some point
RCT at 2016-01-03 15:34:14
here we go for the 2nd half – the refereeing team will be hoping for more of the same in terms of match control …

RCT at 2016-01-03 15:18:42
So far, so good, one key decision in terms of the correct caution for Delaney, good management of the game in terms of not over cautioning, but Mikel and Wiliam need to be aware that they have committed more than one offence and could be close to a caution.
RCT at 2016-01-03 15:17:21
Good man- management by the referee, asserting calm authority just before the half-time interval
RCT at 2016-01-03 15:14:23
Patrick Verira, Paul Scholes, Brian Robson, where are you when we need you to create time and space in a manic midfield area …
RCT at 2016-01-03 15:11:04
Ivanovic offends, but just look at the teamwork, Referee and Assistant both 10-15 meters from the incident and in harmony with their decision …
RCT at 2016-01-03 15:09:00
This is like a game of two-touch in training, slow it down …….
RCT at 2016-01-03 15:06:08
There is no let up in the intensity of this game, the conditions are playing a part, but it’s all a bit manic ….. It’s crying out for a Zidane or a Hoddle to put his foot on the ball and calm things down.
RCT at 2016-01-03 15:02:23
Faultless positioning by Kevin Friend to detect shirt pulling by Souare
RCT at 2016-01-03 15:00:07
That was a fine team goal, Costa unselfish to assist Oscar in opening the scoring – quality through ball by Fabregas ….
RCT at 2016-01-03 14:58:03
Allowance for conditions again being showed as Azpilicueta tumbles Zaha – enough is enough perhaps ?
RCT at 2016-01-03 14:56:11
Great awareness (and positioning) by Kevin Friend to judge that Zouma’s challenge in the penalty area was legal and to correctly award a corner-kick to Palace
RCT at 2016-01-03 14:53:38
So, half-way through the first half and we thought it would be tight, and so it is proving to be, just one shot on target as yet …….
RCT at 2016-01-03 14:52:16
Mikel needs to be careful, that ‘s his second illegal challenge is a short space of time …
RCT at 2016-01-03 14:49:58
Good man-management and awareness, Ward has a head-injury, and in the current climate, stopping play is the only option in terms of safety first ….
RCT at 2016-01-03 14:46:38
It think the referee has got that right, there was a distinct difference in Mikel’s challenge, which was careless, compared to Delaney’s challenge, which was reckless – well done Mr Friend
RCT at 2016-01-03 14:44:05
Conditions or not, that is a poor challenge by Delaney and fully deserved the formal sanction.
RCT at 2016-01-03 14:38:48
It will be interesting to see if Kevin Friend makes allowances for the pitch conditions in terms if judging physical challenges – sometimes players cannot stop, but should this matter now that ‘intent’ is no longer part of law ….
RCT at 2016-01-03 14:35:07
Palace pressing the ball in the defensive third as Chelsea build from the back, this could make for a frantic opening phase of the game where the match officials need to be aware of the possible additional physical contact
RCT at 2016-01-03 14:32:48
Typical English conditions, wet and windy, London derby, Palace flying, Chelsea rebuilding under Guss Hindink – this could be fun ….
RCT at 2016-01-03 14:30:52
Here we go ……..
RCT at 2016-01-03 14:29:43
I predict a tight game, so the first 15-20 minutes will be key as both teams could well be showing caution – both teams likely to play with just a single striker
RCT at 2016-01-03 14:26:25
Palace have 4 attacking players on the sidelines, so possibly their offence options will be restricted today – Diego Costa returns for Chelsea, he always presents an ‘interesting’ challenge for the match officials
RCT at 2016-01-03 14:23:25
Joe Finnigan @CallahondaArab is firmly of the belief that 3 of the current Select Group List should not be involved as he has tweeted “Moss, Mason and Marriner why?” – what do you think, let us know by tweeting us at @youaretheref
RCT at 2016-01-03 14:20:15
So, 2016 is amongst us, interesting to see Bobby Madley wearing his FIFA Referees Badge for the first time at yesterday’s game – who gets your vote for the FIFA list for 2017 ?
RCT at 2016-01-03 14:15:40
Kevin Friend is in charge today, his second RefCam coverage in the space of a few days after his solid performance at The Sunderland v Liverpool game last week. Simon Bennett, who assisted Kevin during that game with a commendable “eyes in the back of the head” offside decision in that game, along with Marc Perry, are ‘on the line’, Andre Marriner is on 4th official duties
RCT at 2016-01-03 14:09:02
I would have been a brave man to predict that Palace would have been 7th and Chelsea 16th at the start of 2016, but this one exciting aspect of this season’s Premier League.
RCT at 2016-01-03 14:06:21
Welcome to our continued coverage of the Premier League – this lunchtime’s game coming from Selhurst Park where Crystal Palace entertain Chelsea
