Full Time Summary – Michael Oliver

RCT at 2017-04-10 22:09:11

This for me has been Michael Oliver`s best Refereeing performance that I have seen this season. We discussed pre match key areas tonight would be Application of law, match control, game management and decision making accuracy and how has he achieved all of these key areas of a refereeing performance?

Let us have a look at the basic principles of decision making for the match officials tonight:

  • See
  • Recognise
  • Think
  • Act

This applies to both referee, assistant and 4th official

As a referee you have to See this is achieved by your fitness both mental and physical. We have discussed these areas in my BLOG.

Viewing positions

Dropping zones

Scanning radar

Reading & anticipating play

Message from the players?

Speed of challenge

Fair of foul

Player`s reactions

Michael from the first minute as per my BLOG looked to see if he could play an advantage then went on to speak to Mustafi 6th min and then to show him the yellow card, he went on to consistently speak to Bellerin and from this point there was little challenge to his authority he let the game breathe and flow whenever he could. The penalty award to Palace in real time was correct 68th minute. Not sure if VAR would have ruled otherwise??

Michael also showed tonight a real presence, urgency, movement and fitness around the field of play taking up close viewing positions and good width and angles.

Both Assistant Referees read all offside judgements correctly (key area) and tuned in very well to Michaels leadership tonight.

Well done Michael the key for me now is for you to go out and consistently show refereeing performances as you have done tonight.

Polished performance from Michael and Team

Palace fk again MO right on the spot to award – no arguments here and this has been a real strength tonight – his positioning, fitness and movement around the field of play

Advantage to Arsenal – good signal and voice communication by MO

RCT at 2017-04-10 21:43:34

Palace gk – ball just out of play – Collin would have signalled this from a position on the goal line

RCT at 2017-04-10 21:42:26

Palace Penalty Kick

RCT at 2017-04-10 21:39:25

For the Palace penalty it would have been interesting if the Video AR would have been available would it have ruled correct or not?

Don’t forget the recent France v Spain Friendly when VAR was used:

Video technology was used to correct two wrong decisions as Spain beat France in a recent friendly in Paris.

France striker Antoine Griezmann had a goal ruled out by a video assistant referee for offside.

It is against us today, but if we have to go through this, it will be the same for everyone

France coach Didier Deschamps on Video Assistant Referee (VAR)

And Spain’s second goal, scored by Gerard Deulofeu, was awarded by the video official after an assistant referee wrongly flagged for offside.

David Silva had opened the scoring for Spain with a penalty after Laurent Koscielny fouled Deulofeu.

Video Assistant Referee (VAR) is currently undergoing trial runs, with Fifa president Gianni Infantino keen to employ the system during the World Cup in Russia next year.

Arsenal appeal for a penalty as the ball goes out of play for a Arsenal ck

RCT at 2017-04-10 21:28:09

Martinez fouls Townsend in the Arsenal penalty area – result is a penalty kick to Crystal Palace – a number of replays are seen but in real time for me it is a penalty kick the referee does not have the benefit of endless replays -looks correct and from the penalty kick Palace score

GOAL! to make it 3-0

RCT at 2017-04-10 21:24:57

Penalty claims from Giroud not enough there for me.

RCT at 2017-04-10 21:24:01

As a referee you will now need to be aware of tempo changes as Arsenal will have to up things as they desperately look to get back in this game. Important 10 minutes for Michael and team to get through.

RCT at 2017-04-10 21:21:53

2-0 – Cabaye which could mean Goodbye to the Gunners tonight.

RCT at 2017-04-10 21:16:04

No foul to Palace is correctly communicated by MO with a shake of the head.

RCT at 2017-04-10 21:13:01

Advantage to Palace = one arm ADVANTAGE signal seen from MO

RCT at 2017-04-10 21:12:02

Palace CK – Michael is taking up the optimum view for these restarts of play.

RCT at 2017-04-10 21:10:52

Zaha careless on Monreal – flag signal from Beswick who has had a busy start to the 2nd half

RCT at 2017-04-10 21:09:40

Replays have just shown a correct offside judgement from Gary Beswick to rule out the Benteke goal

RCT at 2017-04-10 21:08:53

Benteke pokes the ball in after a save from Martinez but is ruled offside from Beswick

RCT at 2017-04-10 21:07:20

Some confusion on that last throw in which eventually went to Arsenal not clear on TV view who signalled correctly but the outcome was correct and a throw in to Arsenal.

RCT at 2017-04-10 21:05:48

2 correct throw in judgements from MO from almost identical positions

RCT at 2017-04-10 21:04:15

Sakho late on Walcott – Spray out by MO – FK to Arsenal

Crystal Palace to kick off the 2nd half

RCT at 2017-04-10 21:03:17

We are underway

Summary – Half Time

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:58:06

For me to half time Michael has shown:

Very good overall match control of a very high profile live TV game!

A stepped approach to match control, he has talked to players, correct showing of a yellow card to Mustafi after speaking to him earlier in the game 6th minute, also, we have seen an excellent application of the advantage clause, whether to play or not.

He is getting into great viewing positions in and around the penalty area (as we have discussed in my blog) to get those all important  key decisions right

Fitness – very good acceleration and a dynamic movement seen with good width and angle achieved. Michael will need to come out in the 2nd half and keep up the high standard of the first half.

His body language is positive and he is applying basic application of law.

Both Assistants have offered very good support, all offside judgements have been correct and are both well in tune with the game and also they are reading Anthony`s overall view and match control.

Half Time

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:47:52

Half Time

1 minute added time

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:46:57

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:46:38

Townsend offside looks correct on replay from Jake Collin

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:45:28

Ball not fully out of play goal line as Michael looks back to Collin who advises him to continue play – good teamwork seen here

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:43:53

Good non offside flag Benteke from Collin  – Strength tonight from both Assistants

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:42:27

Bellerin of Arsenal is careless in that last challenge and Michael lets him know to sort out his timing otherwise next time it will be yellow as he has done with Mustafi consistent here in this respect

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:40:56

Arsenal ck good signal form Gary Beswick – well worth keeping an eye on his signalling technique tonight if and when you run the line then no better education then to watch his signal technique tonight

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:39:02

Fair challenge by Mustafi on Benteke – you did wonder if Mustafi was going to bring down Benteke!

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:36:50

Good sprinting by Michael in that last Palace attack this is an area tonight for me to date that has impressed me – real urgency seen by MO

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:35:14

Good wide angle and width achieved by Michael in that last attack for Arsenal no handball there for me by the Palace player.

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:33:41

FK to Palace – Sanchez has a moan Michael gives him a stern stare – looks good body language to me and sometimes is all you need as referee to keep composed and to deal with this type of moan.

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:31:17

Palace free kick – MO moves to a good position to judge –

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:30:06

Monreal offside another correct offside judgement – Beswick also in line with the 2nd rearmost defender when the ball was played by an Arsenal player – key position for an Assistant to be in to correctly judge

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:27:48

No foul to Arsenal is correct – MO close to judge

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:27:10

What are your thoughts so far?     Joining in on Twitter @youaretheref or e-mail at

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:26:36

Early thoughts – but for me Michael is showing a real urgency and purpose tonight – more energy in his movement and a focus and concentration.

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:25:11

Jake Collin signals palace offside – correct judgement

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:24:36

Mustafi is now shown aYellow Carddon’t forget we discussed that Michael spoke to him in the 6th minute he has to take heed and calm down – that is the purpose of a yellow card if not then he will be off

Ref 1st minute advantage

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:22:37

Thanks for your tweet Simon Jackson fully agree with the 1st minute attempted advantage Michael tried to play for Palace –

No pleasing some players – tried and tried to play the advantage, none really accruing, blows up and gets moaned at!

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:19:54

1-0 Good non flag from Jake Collin Zaha onside

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:18:56

GK to Palace – Michael seen to be moving in well to make a judgement – close to play and early signs are that he really is focussed tonight

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:16:35

Arsenal ck good detection from Michael as the ball took a deflection leaving play

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:13:56

Arsenal offside from Beswick good flag technique for signal and restart of play position

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:13:01

Ozil is detected placing the ball outside of the corner quadrant and is correctly advised by MO to put the ball within the quadrant which he does – part of ball is touching the quadrant now and this is correct in law.

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:10:02

Advantage to Palace and Michael then speaks to Mustafi following his careless challenge on Benteke. Michael showing early man management skills and calmly speaks to Mustafi.

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:07:54

FK to Palace well supported for the placement by Gary Beswick who assists the GK with the correct ball placement

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:05:57

Good early sprinting seen by Gary Beswick in that last Arsenal attack.

RCT at 2017-04-10 20:04:34

Free kick to Palace with Michael trying to play an early advantage but then bringing back play as there was no clear advantage to Palace

Tonight`s Game Pre Match

RCT at 2017-04-10 19:46:32

Good Evening and welcome to The Monday Evening live ref cam commentary game with a 8.00pm kick off at Selhurst Park the home of Crystal Palace sees Arsenal as the visitors a game of massive importance for both teams for completely opposite reasons.

Earlier in the campaign, this would’ve been a nailed on three points for the visitors but the tables have turned and it’s Palace that are in the ascendency now.

Sam Allardyce loves nothing more than upsetting the status quo as he showed in the post-match press conference after an epic victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Big Sam couldn’t buy a win when he was first appointed but he has found the right blend for the Eagles in the nick of time and, at this stage, looks capable of pulling off another escape.

Arsenal need a win to keep up their hopes of Champions League Football next season.

Keep in touch pre, during and post match @
