We discussed at half time the positive aspects of Michael Oliver`s Refereeing performance. Please see my blog for individual minute by minute analysis.

He has gone on in the 2nd half to display some real qualities of a referee in top form.

Good management of the game and players.

Advantages allowed and played indeed as early as from minute 1

Clear communication good arm and directional signals.

Good movement and acceleration seen, particularly in the 2nd half.

Empathy for the game and the 1 yellow card correctly shown.

Good reading of foul / non foul. This was a key area tonight as players looked for fouls when no foul had in fact taken place.

Both Assistant Referees supported Michael very well. Good judgement all round of offside and also good reading of ball out of play and free kick awards.

Well done Michael and Team tonight.

My summary to follow

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:52:59

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:52:31

Full Time

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:52:10

Throw in to Arsenal as Oliver looks to Bennett to make judgement

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:51:24

Again positive ck signal to CP by Oliver.

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:50:27

Arsenal will look to absorb every moment and our referee will be proactive in this area

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:49:18

Foul on Wilshere by Tomkins is correct – awarded from a close position by Oliver

4 minutes minimum additional time

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:48:24

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:47:42

2-3 – Sets us up for a finale – final few minutes.

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:46:41

Ck to Palace Oliver in a good position to judge with a positive whistle and arm movement to signal ck.

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:44:57

Again advantage to Palace and Arsenal then appeal for handball – replay show the ball hit the arm of the Palace player although the ball was struck from a very close range.

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:42:52

Throw in to PALACE again good directional arm signals from Oliver

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:40:14

A painful injury to Xhaka as he slides in a challenge for the ball.

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:38:38

Again good acceleration and movement from our referee in that last Palace attack. This looks so impressive when Michael applies this positive area, as he achieves a good view and angle to make those important KMI judgements.

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:35:07

Fk to Arsenal accepted by players and good to see the players tonight overall accepting our referees decisions.

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:34:03

Fk to Arsenal signalled by Cook – no complaints here and good to see the Assistant Referee signal and assist our referee.

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:32:58

Ball just out of play signalled by Bennett – throw in to Palace.

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:30:25

Palace throw in good to see Michael give and go to his next viewing position. He is displaying a calm air of authority and management tonight so far….

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:27:37

Tempo will go up I am sure and the Officials will need to be aware of this and manage this accordingly.

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:26:17

GOAL!Sanchez 1-3

Sanchez looked just onside although Daniel Cook was some 2 metres ahead of play and not in line with the 2nd rearmost defender, although he may have got the decision correct. You can only make correct judgements by being in line with the 2nd rear most defender.

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:24:02

Another good advantage to CP. A strong feature of our referee tonight. No fk on Townsend is correct as he theatrically falls to the ground in a challenge. For me this area is currently high in the spotlight with players making it very difficult for referees.

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:21:10

Sanchez makes it 1-2

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:20:30

Daniel Cook correctly signals offside supported by replay as the Arsenal player who is offside is on the far touchline as the ball is played to him.

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:18:20

Milivojevic maybe fortunate to escape a yellow as he pulls back Wilshere.

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:16:39

Palace offside from for me one of our best Assistant Referees Simon Bennett.

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:15:18

Followed by a similar fk to Arsenal as Michael looks to steady things down and keep firm match control.

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:13:42

Good time to just award the fk and slow things down a bit.

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:13:07

Very good acceleration from Oliver in that last PALACE attack sees him right on the edge of the Arsenal penalty area to make any potential judgement required. Michael needs to display this area for the full 90 minutes as has it in his refereeing skill set!

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:11:09

Another good non offside flag from Bennett as Loftus-Cheek was offside but not active coming back as the Arsenal player cleared the ball first.

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:08:43

1-1 Palace level. Also a very good non flag for offside when Benteke would have been in Bennett`s eyeline but not in an active area.

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:06:35

First fk award of the half to Palace and this then follows the award of throw in to Arsenal signalled by Simon Bennett who had the better view looking down the line.

Arsenal kick off the 2nd half

CCT at 2017-12-28 22:02:52

Oliver`s whistle indicates play has commenced.

Half time summary

CCT at 2017-12-28 21:57:30

Michael Oliver has read this first half very well. As I mentioned pre match he is arguably one of our best referees and also fast emerging in Europe as a referee with real potential why?

During the first half he has read foul / non foul very well.

He has used the one yellow card effectively and in a timely way.

Very good movement seen and although at times we have mentioned speed off the mark, leaving him some way from play, he has also demonstrated that he has it in his locker to cover this area of reading and movement effortlessly. Just keep the positive areas of movement and acceleration throughout the 90 minutes Michael!.

No key match judgements so far for our referee and Simon Bennett was correct in keeping his flag down (no offside) for the Arsenal goal.

CCT at 2017-12-28 21:48:40

Half Time

CCT at 2017-12-28 21:47:47

Michael Oliver can at times be rather static at quick breakaways however, on that last Palace attack he has made good ground to make his judgement and fk award to Arsenal.

1 minute added time.

CCT at 2017-12-28 21:44:48

Lacazette is just offside when the ball was played to him – a difficult judgement for Bennett as the ball was in the air a long time before Lacazette became active.

CCT at 2017-12-28 21:43:03

Oliver brings back the fk to Palace as he initially allows play to continue – advantage – but then brings back play for the original offence as there is now no advantage to CP.

CCT at 2017-12-28 21:38:31

No fk against Zaha looks correct as he throws himself to ground. Daniel Cook would have had a good view and supported no fk

CCT at 2017-12-28 21:37:06

Good effort from Lacazette sees Oliver move into a good viewing position to make any potential KMI judgement

CCT at 2017-12-28 21:33:20

Yellow Card

Chambers grabs hold of Zaha and Oliver gets out the first yellow card of the night. There appears to be less of a dialogue nowadays with referee and player at this level which is a shame as it is a calming down method and a word of advice for the player to be careful.

CCT at 2017-12-28 21:27:43

Good clear communication signal from Oliver to award a Arsenal ck

CCT at 2017-12-28 21:26:23

Mustafi from the Arsenal fk to make it 0-1

CCT at 2017-12-28 21:21:58

No fk to Palace with a player on the ground clear no fk signal from Oliver. Looks positive and shows to all he has seen and no fk.

CCT at 2017-12-28 21:20:13

FK to Arsenal following a foul by Dann. Immediate whistle and arm signal to Arsenal. How positive are your directional arm fk signals?

CCT at 2017-12-28 21:18:09

No handball against Chambers is correct as this is not deliberate in the opinion of our referee tonight.

CCT at 2017-12-28 21:16:57

Daniel Cook is on the nearside touchline as we view and Simon Bennett AR.1 is on the far touchline

CCT at 2017-12-28 21:15:45

The whole of the ball just goes out of play and over the touchline and gives Daniel Cook his first decision to make.

CCT at 2017-12-28 21:13:46

No fk to Palace – again good judgement of foul / non foul to date.

CCT at 2017-12-28 21:12:31

Simon Bennett raises the flag for offside against Sanchez. Clearly communicated to our referee. Good judgement seen here.

CCT at 2017-12-28 21:11:28

Good advantage this time played for Palace by Oliver.

CCT at 2017-12-28 21:10:23

Good early movement and positioning seen from our referee so far

Tonight`s Referee – Michael Oliver

CCT at 2017-12-28 20:54:36

Michael Oliver is probably arguably now England`s Number 1 Referee and he is also fast emerging as a top referee in Europe.

For tonight`s game can we look closely at the following areas as below within Michael Oliver`s refereeing performance.

  1. Application of Law:
  2. Match Control:
  3. Positioning Fitness & Work Rate:
  4. Alertness & Awareness and Management of Stoppages:
  5. Communication:
  6. Teamwork:
  7. Advantage:

These areas are key as a referee that you need to consider and focus upon as you commence refereeing and then ongoing into your refereeing career. Even if you referee locally for enjoyment, then these areas can really help you to focus and mentally prepare and for your game. Also it is important for you to reflect upon these areas and also to give yourself a mark out of ten for each section. Be honest on how well you think you have refereed the game. If you have a referee colleague at a game then ask them to feedback to you on the above 7 sections and see how well they think you have done! YATR Academy

More information regarding these and many other areas of a refereeing performance are available at the YATR Academy
