Match Summary

AM at 2015-11-23 01:29:44

I have really enjoyed the MLS games that I have seen this season and this game lived up to one of the best.In this 1st leg then Columbus Crew have made a great start with a 2-0 lead they had 15 attempts on goal with 7 on target and New York had 16 attempts on goal with 2 on target says it all. With 9 corner kicks each and 9 fouls committed by CC and 10 by NY. Just the1 yellow card shown by Allen Chapman to Wahl of CC. I mentioned in my blog that I felt that 9 of CC was very fortunate not receive a yellow card (persistent) and also McCarty of NY was guilty of a deliberate pull back on 25 of CC near the end of the game.

Otherwise I was really impressed with Allen Chapman who showed an impressive pace and movement, good fitness levels with good angles achieved particularly as play moved towards the penalty areas for key match decisions. He tuned in well to this 1st leg game –  never easy games with the 2nd leg still to play for. But overall he has managed the game well, communicated clearly with players both verbal and by his arm signals.

Both Assistants tuned in well with the support of the referee and as discussed in my blog we have covered some areas for them both to consider, however, on the night both supported the referee and  gave solid Assistant Referee performances on a very cold evening in Ohio.

The 2nd leg is all to play for in New York next Sunday, which will be covered live on REF CAM.

Full Time

2-0

90+2

AM at 2015-11-23 01:12:38

Free kick to CC followed up a throw in to CC

CC sub 9 off (to avoid a yellow card) with 12 on

90+3

AM at 2015-11-23 01:10:41

Minimum of 3 minutes additional time

89

AM at 2015-11-23 01:09:48

Again the referee shows a good sprint and movement as he enters the final third – offside against NY WITH 3 MINUTES OF ADDED TIME SHOWN BY 4TH OFFICIAL

88

AM at 2015-11-23 01:07:41

CC sub 25 off 3 on

86

AM at 2015-11-23 01:06:50

CK to CC when it looked a gk (DEFLECTION OFF CC PLAYER) to NY following a signal from GG

84

AM at 2015-11-23 01:05:16

GOAL! Kamara 23 of CC makes it 2-0 what a crucial time to score. Can NY get back into this game?

82

AM at 2015-11-23 01:04:16

11 of NY has deliberately pulled back 25 of CC – no free kick is awarded when it should have been and also a yellow card would been correct for McCarty of NY in this situation. Again the referee`s position did not have the best view.

81

AM at 2015-11-23 01:00:49

With 9 minutes and added time to go it is crucial for AC to stay focussed and alert to bring this frenetic game safely to its conclusion.

78

AM at 2015-11-23 00:59:10

It gets a bit untidy in the middle of the field of play. A free kick is needed to be given for the referee to prevent an escalation of challenges.

CC sub 13 off and 11 on

73/74

AM at 2015-11-23 00:57:24

Again we see good movement from AC with a fluid movement in the last NY build up. Filipee of NY is late on a CC player and is fortunate to escape with not even a free kick against him. A yellow card for this reckless challenge would have been appropriate I don’t think the referee had the best view and maybe could have received a supportive flag from GG  who would have had a better view?

71

AM at 2015-11-23 00:52:07

Jessie Marsh the NY manager is showing some frustration again as he feels that there was a foul in the last CC build up. It just shows the pressure on this game with 18 minutes to go and added time

69

AM at 2015-11-23 00:49:46

9 of CC goes down in a challenge, ball is played out he is checked by the referee and is fine to continue. 9 of CC is certainly walking a fine line now.

67

AM at 2015-11-23 00:47:34

CC throw in correct despite moans from certain NY players and management in the technical area

66

AM at 2015-11-23 00:45:41

NYRB sub 13 off 30 on

64

AM at 2015-11-23 00:45:12

9 of CC is again spoken to at a stoppage for me this was the ideal opportunity for AC to show the yellow card for persistent misconduct as we discussed just before HT

62

AM at 2015-11-23 00:43:04

JM is correct to signal a free kick to CC – initially he attempted to keep players moving with his vocal encouragement but in the end he had to signal and intervene to prevent further escalation with players in very close proximity

Offside NY

AM at 2015-11-23 00:37:46

Correct signal and judgement from JM

New York Breakaway

AM at 2015-11-23 00:37:10

Again look at the referees close proximity to play in that quick NY breakaway. GG signals a throw in had ALL the ball crossed over the touchline? always more difficult when you have players between you and the ball

51

AM at 2015-11-23 00:33:07

Kamara of CC looks to GG advising that his shirt was being pulled, you wont get a flag from an AR from that distance from the offence! AC was much closer and advised no.

49

AM at 2015-11-23 00:29:10

Free kick to CC foul on 6 of CC no further action required here

47

AM at 2015-11-23 00:27:52

AC certainly shows a very good movement / good viewing angle in the final 3rd as play enters the penalty areas.

46

AM at 2015-11-23 00:25:51

2. WAHL of CC Yellow Cardas predicted as our referee decides to take a frim stance in the 2nd half

2nd half underway

AM at 2015-11-23 00:23:52

NY Red Bulls kick off the 2nd half, with the blow of Allen Chapman`s whistle

Half Time Summary

AM at 2015-11-23 00:18:48

Allen Chapman has shown to date a real empathy for this end to end game, after a sensational start with CC scoring after 11 seconds it ensured that NY had to respond and this has led to an open and exciting game. AC has shown very good movement and acceleration with good viewing angles and close proximity to play achieved. With no yellow cards to date I do think that this will change in the 2nd half as the tempo will increase and the referee uses these to aid his match control.

Both Assistants have tuned in to the referees overall control of this game, just 1 offside from George Gasner (in his final season) and Jeff Muschik has supported well just the 1 free kick when I felt he could of supported our referee with a flag signal for a free kick to CC.

Bring on the 2nd half I cannot wait……..

Half Time

AM at 2015-11-23 00:12:11

Half Time

1-0

45+1

AM at 2015-11-23 00:11:53

AC speaks to 9 of CC at a stoppage who now knows his next challenge will bring a card. I think that 9 of CC is fortunate not to have received a yellow card here as he has been spoken to by our referee with 16 of NY earlier in this game.

2 minutes of added time

AM at 2015-11-23 00:07:04

8 of NY appears to have a head injury in that last challenge – may have been better for the referee to stop play and check

42

AM at 2015-11-23 00:05:31

9 CC careless on 16 NY – free kick correct and whilst 16 of NY wants a yellow card for 9 of CC the referee is not deceived by this action and sticks to what he has seen

41

AM at 2015-11-23 00:03:44

AC off the ball is using clear communication using his verbal and arm signals

38

AM at 2015-11-23 00:01:44

20 of NY and 9 of CC have words with each other off the ball – they both need to be careful as AC moves in for some words of advice to both players

36

AM at 2015-11-22 23:59:46

That looked to be a free kick to NY as the referee keeps play moving – 20 of NY puts his arms out to the referee to ask why not given?

34

AM at 2015-11-22 23:57:25

Deflection for a ck to NY Red Bulls as the referee checks on a NY Player, brings on the physio to attend to 92 of NY as he then leaves the field of play. CK to NY is the restart of play

31

AM at 2015-11-22 23:53:42

In a very quick break by CC – AC shows excellent movement and positioning to move with play

Offside from George Gasner

AM at 2015-11-22 23:51:46

27

AM at 2015-11-22 23:50:15

Allen Chapman is showing a good movement and skip to change direction he is well in control to date and showing a real empathy for this game.

24

AM at 2015-11-22 23:47:03

Ck to NY Red Bulls as AC takes up a good view to signal a ck – good movement and angle taken up so far by our referee

22

AM at 2015-11-22 23:44:45

Advantage to NY Red Bulls 6 of CC careless on 11 of NY Red Bulls. The Referee comes back to speak to both offender and offended

18

AM at 2015-11-22 23:42:36

Free kick to CC foul on 25 of CC our referee has chosen to speak to the offended player, it was just a pity that JM on the far side did not signal the free kick as he was better placed to do so.

16

AM at 2015-11-22 23:38:40

Free kick against Kamara of CC looked correct there was only a slight delay in the whistle by AC

14

AM at 2015-11-22 23:36:19

The Referee has started his game very well he is in tune with the frenetic pace and only intervening when necessary

11

AM at 2015-11-22 23:33:47

Further ck to CC in an end to end start I think we are in for an exciting game with more goals in store!

9

AM at 2015-11-22 23:32:33

FK to CC – good movement to the scene of the free kick from our referee who uses the spray in his management of the kick. Good viewing position taken up and also eye contact with AR

9

AM at 2015-11-22 23:30:41

Further ck to CC and again good signal technique from JM

6

AM at 2015-11-22 23:28:38

Ck to CC good movement and signal from far side AR Jeff Muschik

5

AM at 2015-11-22 23:26:39

Good early movement, positioning and fitness seen from our match referee

3

AM at 2015-11-22 23:25:40

Good preventative calming words from Allen Chapman prior to a ck

11 seconds!

AM at 2015-11-22 23:22:50

GOAL!

1-0 what a start goal after 11 seconds must be close to a record!

Pre Match Build Up

AM at 2015-11-22 23:04:01

When Columbus Crew SC and the New York Red Bulls last met in the MLS Cup Playoffs, it was MLS Cup 2008 — and Columbus captured the league title with a 3-1 win, their third victory in three postseason meetings all-time. Now the teams — the top two finishers in the Eastern Conference this season — meet in the Eastern Conference Championship in the first leg at Mapfre Stadium. Crew SC survived an extra-time clash with the Montreal Impact in their conference semifinal series, winning the second leg 3-1 to advance 4-3 on aggregate. The Supporters’ Shield-winning Red Bulls claimed a pair of 1-0 victories in dispatching rivals D.C. United in their conference semifinal.
