Final Summary – The Referee Chris Penso has shown a number of positive attributes tonight – Namely: Good fitness and relaxed movement around the field of play. Excellent early penalty call as described. I just felt that he lost his way a bit with the cheap showing of yellow / red card as he attempted to over exert his control of this game. There was no need to as he was well in control of this game and a number of situations as I have mentioned in my blog could and should of been managed. I would like to see Chris Penso use the stepped approach, quiet word, public rebuke and then apply the appropriate saction. AR far side had the 1 incorrect KMI offside 1st half as I have described, but he went on in the 2nd half to display a good reading of the wait and see technique. AR nearside gave a good account of himself with correct reading of offside situations and also a good reading of ball in /out of play. 4th official did well with good support to the referee Let us know what you think by contacting us on either on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com

4 Yellow Cardand 1Red Cardshown overall in this game

AM at 2015-07-20 00:25:19
As the CLB goal keeper takes the goal kick the referee then blows the whistle for Full Time 3-1

AM at 2015-07-20 00:24:03
Maybe the 4th Official and or AR has offered the referee some advice via the comms kit and how this has helped the game overall, good teamwork!

AM at 2015-07-20 00:22:26
With the referee in control and no challenge to his authority he has now completed about 23 minutes with no yellow cards and how this has helped the game overall. 3 minutes of added time are shown by our 4th official.

AM at 2015-07-20 00:19:48
Good position by the referee, close and a good viewing angle to award a goal kick to CLB

AM at 2015-07-20 00:18:16
Free kick to CLB. Strong whistle from referee to signify infringement by CHI player

GOAL! 3-1. Good goal, again GOOD NON OFFSIDE FLAG FROM far side AR. Well done!

AM at 2015-07-20 00:13:13
As a plus for the referee I feel that he has displayed a good and relaxed movement around the field of play. He looks comfortable and I feel that he can display a positive authority without the need to show yellow cards to justify himself. He can just as effectively manage the game, BY WORD AND USE OF WHISTLE, without any detriment to his control.   CLB SUB 7 ON

AM at 2015-07-20 00:08:13
Again the ball remains in play as CHI players appeal for a throw in

AM at 2015-07-20 00:07:12
The game has been competitive but both teams have attempted to play within the laws of the game.   Let us know what you think by contacting us on either on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com

AM at 2015-07-20 00:06:12
As we enter the final 15 minutes the referee needs to be mindful not to let the game go out of his control with the cheap showing of yellow cards for minimal offences.

AM at 2015-07-20 00:04:20
Ball not wholly out of play well done nearside AR

AM at 2015-07-20 00:03:21
CLB Offside this looked to BE correct, good use of the wait and see technique from far side AR CLB SUB 3 OFF 21 ON

Free kick to CHI good signal technique from far side AR, he has not over reacted with an agitated flag movement.

AM at 2015-07-19 23:59:12
Free kick to CLB give and go referee, no need to stay and watch, good advice to get to your next position of play, anticipate play and move to the next phase of play

Good non offside flag from far side AR and then 10 of CLB is shown a yellow card Yellow Cardwhich for me could have been managed with a free kick and no further action

AM at 2015-07-19 23:54:37
Free kick to CHI a the referee moves in. No further action is correct as 14 of CHI receives treatment and looks for a yellow card for the CLB player. This is what tends to happen when you show yellow cards for minimal offences. Players then look to even up matters and expect a yellow card for every challenge.

AM at 2015-07-19 23:50:32
Free kick to CLB with a an excessive amount of whistle for the restart of play. My advice would be to let your whistle do your talking, less for the taking of a free kick and use the whistle for those challenges that warrant greater whistle use.

AM at 2015-07-19 23:47:49
Yellow Card6 of CLB. I hope that the referee does not let the cards mount up for minimal challenges which he could manage? with this in mind CLB sub 6 fearing a 2nd yellow and bring on 8. CLB SUB 6 off and 8 on

AM at 2015-07-19 23:45:11
Jason Johnson 7 of CHI shown Yellow Cardand Red Cardthe player is then sent off for a second yellow card. This for me is incorrect and the player has been blocked in a challenge he has not attempted to deceive the referee by diving. If the referee had taken his time in the 1st yellow card award then I feel sure that a second yellow would not have been seen in this situation.

AM at 2015-07-19 23:40:40
As we see the no 11 of CHI clipped on his heels by a CLB player no penalty kick is awarded when for me having seen replays this should have been a penalty kick to CHI. I LOOKED AT THE REFEREES POSITION AND HE SEEMED TO BE UNSIGHTED WITH PLAYER MOVEMENT ACROSS HIS LINE OF VISION? A WIDER AND CLEARER VIEW /  POSITION WOULD HAVE ASSISTED HIM HERE. Well the referee Chris Penso had a big call (penalty to CC) to make in the first 5 seconds and he was correct. Overall he has controlled the game in an efficient manner. Good movement seen and correct use of the yellow cards. I would just like to see him use his time here and speak to the players in a 121 manner as I have described in my BLOG. Use your time and let the player know why he has been cautioned and let him know to be careful for the remainder of the game. Incorrect throw ins have been seen and the referee needs to be careful not to let fouls go unpunished by the award of a free kick. Far side AR has made one key match error with an incorrect raised flag for offside to deny a clear and correct goal for CHI. He just needed to wait and see. Nearside AR has made good use of the wait and see technique for offside. 4th Official no problems noted as both technical areas are displaying a positive approach to this game. Bring on the second half..     Let us know what you think by contacting us on either on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com

Half Time2-1. Half time summary to follow

AM at 2015-07-19 23:21:14
Yellow Cardshown to CHI defender player for deliberate handball. Correct.

AM at 2015-07-19 23:19:42
As we enter the closing moments of this delayed first half, no free kick is awarded by the referee close to the technical areas, it is important to keep your gaze as play moves quickly away. 1 minute of additional time is shown by the 4th Official.

AM at 2015-07-19 23:16:44
Offside from far side AR again good timing, when he raises his flag

AM at 2015-07-19 23:14:55
That looked to me as an incorrect throw in by the CHI player. This was also an area recently raised by Paul Rejer. Keep an eye on this area as the game progresses.

AM at 2015-07-19 23:13:33
Offside by AV again good delay and timing of the offside flag

AM at 2015-07-19 23:11:52
The referee has decided to show a Yellow Cardto 7 of CHI. He has just shown the yellow card at the player,  I feel that a more formal approach would been beneficial in this situation. Take your time speak to the player and not only advise him of a yellow card, but also let the player know that he has to be careful for the remainder of the game

AM at 2015-07-19 23:08:01
Better use of the wait and see technique by IA in this offside situation. He has waited and waited until the CHI player has played the ball in an offside position when the ball was played to him

AM at 2015-07-19 23:06:03
Good movement from Ian Anderson on the far side touchline as play moves towards the goal line

AM at 2015-07-19 23:05:23
No offside flag correctly not raised by Anthony Vasoli with the offside player behind the defender who heads the ball out of play for a corner kick. Good use of the wait and see technique

AM at 2015-07-19 23:02:56
No free kick awarded by CP when the safe option would have been to award one with players tangling for the ball and on the ground. It would be the safe option to award a free kick rather than risk your control.

The referee Chris Penso (CP) is showing a good movement and close proximity to play in this end to end game

AM at 2015-07-19 22:51:45
GOAL!Kamara with a header, this game is full of goals tonight!

AM at 2015-07-19 22:51:07
Ian Anderson the Assistant on the far side has again not used the wait and see technique. At the point that the ball was played into the penalty area he has raised his flag against the CF player who did not play the ball, with the ball travelling to an onside colleague who plays the ball into the CC goal. If only the Assistant had held his flag down and used the wait and see technique as Paul Rejer has described!

AM at 2015-07-19 22:48:08
Play of the Week 19 By PRO Training & Development Manager Paul Rejer In Play of the Week 19 we are looking at the importance of the use of the Wait and See technique when making offside decisions. The play is from New York Red Bulls versus New England Revolution, in the 37th minute. Revolution’s Lee Nguyen receives the ball from Teal Bunbury and moves into the Red Bulls’ penalty area. He then crosses the ball over in the direction of team-mate Charlie Davies, who is poised to play it. Assistant referee Sean Hurd, who would be primarily focused on Davies, raises his flag when it seemed obvious that Davies was going to play the ball. At this stage, however, New England’s Andy Dorman surprises both Davies and, more importantly, Hurd by appearing from an onside position to slot the ball into the goal. Immediately realizing his error in raising his flag, Hurd summons referee Alan Kelly over to him for dialogue. In the meantime, Hurd explains to Nguyen that he made an error by anticipating and raising his flag too quickly and is going to inform the referee. You can see by Nguyen’s body language that he appreciates this and thanks Hurd. Following the dialogue, referee Kelly correctly awards the goal. This incident reinforces how vitally important it is for ARs to always wait and see before raising the flag and not to anticipate, no matter how obvious the outcome may seem. By keeping the flag down by just a second, Hurd would have realized that Davies did not play the ball and Dorman had arrived from an onside position. The most important aspect to this play is that Hurd, when realizing his error, ensures that eventually the correct decision is made. However, by not utilizing the Wait and See technique, the AR missed the opportunity of making a classic decision.

AM at 2015-07-19 22:47:13
Paul Rejer Training and Development Manager of PRO Soccer has discussed this issue of offside and I will raise it with you shortly

AM at 2015-07-19 22:46:08
No goal to Chicago Fire as the Assistant Referee on the far side incorrectly raises his flag for offside. He has flagged too quickly and incorrectly ruled out this goal.

AM at 2015-07-19 22:44:01
Well we have a game on now and again the referee is showing good early movement with a dynamic pace.

AM at 2015-07-19 22:42:32
Good position achieved by CP to award a Chicago Fire free kick, spray out and from the free kick we have a   GOAL!

AM at 2015-07-19 22:41:23
Tonight`s referee is Chris Penso, very good early fitness seen and also good use of the whistle which he has made talk for him.

at 2015-07-19 22:40:15

AM at 2015-07-19 22:38:45
There has been a change of referee from the one as listed and the replacement referee has been correct and spot on in his award, so early in the game and shows how you must be switched on from the kick off

AM at 2015-07-19 22:37:18
In the first 5 seconds we have a key match incident and the award of a penalty kick to Columbus Crew, following a foul by the Chicago goal keeper and correctly awarded and a goal is scored to make it 1-0

AM at 2015-07-19 22:34:23
The referee blows his whistle to signal the kick off…

AM at 2015-07-19 22:33:03
Just a reminder of the match officials again:   Referee Ted Unkel (TU) Assistant Referee 1. Ian Anderson (IA) Assistant Referee 2. Anthony Vasoli (AV) 4th Official. Fotis Bazakos (FB)

AM at 2015-07-19 22:32:14
Well it is good news we are now back and ready for kick off, due to inclement weather the kick off was delayed.

AM at 2015-07-19 22:25:49
Well there is plenty going on in this football gold game, with Jeff Winter in charge and there are plenty of talking points so far in this derby game!

AM at 2015-07-19 22:17:18
Well, unfortunately I have just been advised that there is still a technical problem so we are now viewing a football gold game between Everton v Liverpool

AM at 2015-07-19 22:15:18
Well we did have a technical problem with this game but thankfully this has now been resolved. So it is game on..

Here is some brief history about Columbus Crew: Columbus Crew is an American professional soccer club based in Columbus, Ohio which competes in Major League Soccer (MLS). It is one of the ten charter clubs of MLS, having competed in the league since its inception.Crew SC is owned by Anthony Precourt and Precourt Sports Ventures LLC. Precourt became the second owner in the history of the club on July 30, 2013. The club’s head coach is Gregg Berhalter, a former player of the United States men’s national soccer team. The club was founded in 1996 and originally known as the Columbus Crew, without any markers of its membership as a soccer club, until late 2014, when the club revealed a new logo and the addition of ‘SC’ to its moniker. The “SC” in the team moniker stands for Soccer Club, but the team name is officially “Columbus Crew SC”. Crew SC currently plays its home games at Mapfre Stadium (known as Columbus Crew Stadium until 2015), the first soccer-specific stadium ever built for a MLS team, with a seating capacity of 19,968 as of the 2014 season. From 1996 to 1998, Crew SC played its home games at Ohio Stadium on the campus of Ohio State University .In 2014, the club’s 19th season at Crew Stadium, the Black & Gold set attendance records for both most cumulative attendance and most sellouts. Crew SC has won five major trophies: MLS Cup 2008, the 2004, 2008, and 2009 Supporters’ Shields, and the 2002 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Crew SC has qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League (or its predecessor, the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup) three times, reaching the quarterfinals each time.

Good evening and a very warm welcome to tonight`s REF CAM game between Columbus Crew vs Chicago Fire which is to be played at Mapfre Stadium.
