Well in the closing stages of this game it just shows how you have to be in full control for the 90 minutes. This was a terrific entertaining game. Now a break for a cup of tea before watching TV with the laptop tuned into http://you-are-the-ref.com REFCAM and reading Roger Dilkes views on the referees performance So I sign off…..we have seen the David Brent of ref fin. Webb makes it look like another day at the office

KH at 2014-06-19 17:54:43
I hope that Howard adds more time in the additional time period to cover for the delaying tactics of Columbia. remember it is a minimum 4 minutes added time

KH at 2014-06-19 17:53:43
In your refereeing it is so important that you maintain full concentration and awareness for the full 90 minutes

KH at 2014-06-19 17:52:31
The Ivory Coast are trying to break up play by introducing a little play acting

KH at 2014-06-19 17:51:52
4 minutes added time…the game now is getting very messy .

KH at 2014-06-19 17:51:08
What terrific refereeing. After the advantage Howard correctly cautioned the player for his reckless challenge How much added time do you expect /

KH at 2014-06-19 17:49:34
advantage played by Howard

KH at 2014-06-19 17:49:07
The clocks ticking down. Was that foul challenge worthy of a yellow card? Let me have your views contact us on twitter @youaretheref

KH at 2014-06-19 17:47:34
One thing about this World Cup. We are seeing some very fit match officials. Howard is covering a large distance at speed in this game. No signs of fatigue at all. that training in the heat chamber at Sheffield Hallam University  is paying dividends.  His dad Bill a former Referee will be more than happy with Howards performance so far.

KH at 2014-06-19 17:44:23
Ivory Coast certainly applying the pressure looking for an equalising goal.

KH at 2014-06-19 17:43:17
Howard having a word with the goalkeeper to advise him that he is monitoring the situation

KH at 2014-06-19 17:42:38
Time delaying and time wasting have to be monitored and acted upon if appropriate.

KH at 2014-06-19 17:41:28
Important corner. referee must ensure that he takes up a good viewing position.

KH at 2014-06-19 17:40:50
A break well covered by Howard

KH at 2014-06-19 17:40:06
substitution changes can break up the play and also the concentration of the officials. Most top class referees are talking to themselves during the course of the game in order to maintain a very high level of concentration and awareness

KH at 2014-06-19 17:37:45
Free kick awarded

KH at 2014-06-19 17:37:03
Howard five yards aware detects and penalises the foul challenge

KH at 2014-06-19 17:36:22
75 minutes gone and the next 15 minutes will test everyones nerve.Really important for the team of officials to concentrate.

KH at 2014-06-19 17:35:01
Toure must now hold is discipline. I have noticed him getting involved in some indiscipline

KH at 2014-06-19 17:34:02
WHAT A GREAT GOAL AFTER AN INDIVIDUAL RUN.  2-1 GAME ON

KH at 2014-06-19 17:33:00
Referees have clearly been instructed to join the player going off at substitutions to ensure no delay. I think that this is not necessary.

KH at 2014-06-19 17:31:57
Darren Cann was in a great position to judge on offside. Second goal. Let us see how the Ivory Coast players react. Recipe for some indiscipline from them has they get frustrated.

KH at 2014-06-19 17:30:01
GAOL 2-0

KH at 2014-06-19 17:29:38
The temperature of the game has certainly risen and we can see some players beginning to show some dissent.

KH at 2014-06-19 17:28:29
Howard blows for a free kick again close to play. set pice where lots of goals are score.  Wall back and out with the spray. Now he takes up his position

KH at 2014-06-19 17:27:06
Game changer here and the match officials must again be alert and operate in close proximity to play. Just in case any player wants to vent his frustration on an opponent. Was that ball correctly placed at the corner kick before the goal

KH at 2014-06-19 17:25:13
GOAL I-0

KH at 2014-06-19 17:24:52
Question….was the ball correctly placed in the corner quadrant before it was kicked and the goal scored. Let me have your opinion Twitter us on @youaretheref

KH at 2014-06-19 17:22:47
One of the massive teaching points so far in this game was the appeal for the penalty kick. The offside decision killed the potential protest.

KH at 2014-06-19 17:21:09
Chelsea fans will be happy to see Didier Drogba on the field

KH at 2014-06-19 17:20:12
Explosive shot on goal that the goalkeeper palmed onto the crossbar

KH at 2014-06-19 17:19:37
one of the strengths of Howard is how he penetrates the penalty area to put himself in a credible position to sell his goal kick decisions

KH at 2014-06-19 17:18:40
The fouls are now coming on a more regular basis with a rise in temperature in the game. This is where referees must recognise this and raise their involvement. Tighter control and a reduction in the application of advantage

KH at 2014-06-19 17:16:54
Excellent offside decision by Darren Can, and look at Howards position to talk to the player who wanted a penalty kick for handball.

KH at 2014-06-19 17:15:59
An easy yellow card to apply. Howard quick to apply

KH at 2014-06-19 17:15:09
Prior to the start of the world Cup the Managers of all the teams will have been involved in briefing session. They will have an understanding of how the officials are going to operate

KH at 2014-06-19 17:13:46
Substitute.

KH at 2014-06-19 17:13:19
Free kick awarded and Howard now needs to manage the position of the ball and the defensive wall. Ten yards achieved and a big spray. Amazing how the wall do not creep forward. Tell me would you like to see this used in the Premier league and Football League.

KH at 2014-06-19 17:11:20
I have noticed in this World cup that referees are taking a more traditional flow path when the attack is moving forward. Rather than cut through the centre circle they are moving out wider and closer to the touchline.

KH at 2014-06-19 17:09:03
Howards burst of speed and in a great position to judge the foul challenge. A free kick is sufficient no further sanction required. however that is my opinion. do you see it has stopping a promising attack and a yellow card?

KH at 2014-06-19 17:07:23
The assistant are operating on the same diagonal. Look at Darren Canns crabbing movement facing the field of play in line with the second rearmost defender ready to make that offside decision if required.

KH at 2014-06-19 17:06:05
Howard blows his whistle to start the second half.

KH at 2014-06-19 17:05:39
Have you tuned into Cards on the Table and listened in to the interviews. Broadcaster and Journalist Alan Biggs has interviewed several stakeholders in the game. The Manager, Player and Broadcaster are already up on our website. Tune in and listen to what they have to say.

KH at 2014-06-19 17:02:22
Happy to receive your comments and questions on the game or any refereeing issue. it is the intention of you-are-the-ref to inform and educate all stakeholders in the game. Jock Waugh former National list referee has put together a formidable team to offer a world class service.

KH at 2014-06-19 17:00:08
Referee in the halftime period must prepare for the second half. Stretching exercises to avoid any hamstring problems. in this heat he may even change his shirt. He will have discussed the first half performance. I have listened in to these talks having for a number of years been Howards coach.

KH at 2014-06-19 16:54:48
The corner kick situation was interesting. May I remind you that this is covered in Law17. The corner kick is taken when the ball is kicked and moves. It does not have to come outside the corner quadrant. This is a legitimate tactic that takes place on a limited number of occasions. Howard however got involved to operate safe refereeing tactic to avoid any controversy

KH at 2014-06-19 16:51:53
An enjoyable first half and Howard will be aware that the first game has gone well. No I am not implying that it is over. He will now be preparing for the second game. The second half to you and i. He will take on board the appropriate liquids containing electrolytes to assist his stamina in the second half. The team of referees including the fourth official will be discussing the tactics employed by both teams. The hotspots in the game and how they were handled.

KH at 2014-06-19 16:49:06
Howard in this game is likely to cover a distance in excess of 11500m. 1000m at a speed in excess of 7m per second.

KH at 2014-06-19 16:48:13
Again Howard well placed. OFFSIDE – Good decision from Mike

KH at 2014-06-19 16:47:10
Coming towards the end of the game. Howard and his team need to maintain concentration. This is the time when some players can switch off and the match officials have a call to make

KH at 2014-06-19 16:45:24
My colleague Roger Dilkes, former Premier League Referee will be covering the England game coming up next. Roger a former player always gives an interesting insight into the tactics of the team. Remember to tune in.

KH at 2014-06-19 16:43:33
See how efficient Mike Mullarkey was with his signal. clear communication with flag held at 45 degrees and his left hand down by his side

KH at 2014-06-19 16:42:16
What a sprint by Howard to then find a good viewing position and to hover whilst play takes place.

KH at 2014-06-19 16:40:32
Players are having a tendency to go to ground easily testing the official. Howard will not buy it, good to see him having a quiet word on the run with the player

KH at 2014-06-19 16:38:55
Did any of you witness the excellent performance of Mark geiger in last nights game. He gave a masterclass in officiating. Well done the American. It was his second game and he is sure to get more. In my blog today i have put him down has one of my favourites for the Final

KH at 2014-06-19 16:37:04
High ball into the Penalty area from the free kick, interesting to see in this World cup very little grappling taking place between players has the ball drops into play

KH at 2014-06-19 16:35:47
Free kick to the Ivory Coast, Howard staying around the scene of the offence to ensure ball is placed correctly then walks defender back, without the use of the spray

KH at 2014-06-19 16:34:28
Good shot by Columbia the player doing a step over before shooting with his left foot, Interesting footwear. The boots look very similar to those worn in Rugby. Suggest however that Rugby players might go for a more conservative colour

KH at 2014-06-19 16:32:12
Very open and fast game moving from  end to end and a real physical test for Howard. he moves with ease and his work rate is terrific to watch. He is alert and aware of what is happening

KH at 2014-06-19 16:30:54
The Referee his two assistants and the fourth official are of course in contact with each other over the communication system. This aids teamwork amongst the officials

KH at 2014-06-19 16:29:03
Watched Ya Ya Toure at the Ethiad Stadium in Manchester. He is a terrific player and he is certainly involved in this game making himself busy. Howard will have officiated him so he can if needs be use him in his communication with other players of Ya Yas team if needs be.

KH at 2014-06-19 16:25:07
Interesting management of the corner kick, Howard alert and positive to ensure that the kick is taken correctly

KH at 2014-06-19 16:22:38
Please note how Howard squeezed play when the players were heading into the corner. Good refereeing

KH at 2014-06-19 16:21:29
A free kick in mid-field but Howard had to get involve to ensure the defending player was the appropriate distance from the ball (9.15m) 10 yards

KH at 2014-06-19 16:20:26
In quickly to award a free kick, correct decision.  Cannot understand the actions of the player fouled a little bit theatrical.

KH at 2014-06-19 16:19:08
We are into the 16th minute of the game and the game is open and fair allowing Howard to let it breathe.

KH at 2014-06-19 16:18:22
Howard will skip when the ball is moving around close by him to ensure that his head position is looking straight towards the ball. The stillness and position of the head in most sports is so important.

KH at 2014-06-19 16:16:49
Keep a watch on Darren Can the Assistant facing us. His flagging technique is terrific. He is holding the flag vertically down when he is moving up and down the touchline.

KH at 2014-06-19 16:15:26
The modern referee must be able to produce an explosive sprint and that Ivory Coast attack demonstrated Howards ability in the is area. Great been fit, its how you apply it.

KH at 2014-06-19 16:13:50
Assistant Darren Can with a positive flag to indicate a free kick. The use of the paint spray is really effective

KH at 2014-06-19 16:12:55
Howard monitoring play and then making short impact explosive sprints to mover closer to the proximity of play

KH at 2014-06-19 16:10:58
A terrific run by the ivory coast down the wing

KH at 2014-06-19 16:09:37
A ball on the field, the game correctly stopped by Howard. A few years ago at sunderland the match ball hit a balloon on its way into goal and the goal was incorrectly awarded.

COLOMBIA V IVORY COASTKH at 2014-06-19 16:07:52
A glance of Mike Mullarkey  technical area side of the field giving a verbal instruction to the thrower to ensure he is taking the throw in from the correct position.

KH at 2014-06-19 16:05:56
Howard Webb when making his signals will have an open palm of the hand and hold his arm out for a period that is sufficient for everyone to see the direction of the free kick or throw in. This helps to raise the referees authority

KH at 2014-06-19 16:03:57
For those officials who have joined me please keep a watchful eye out for the flagging techniques that the two assistants operate.

KH at 2014-06-19 16:02:22
Ivory coast in green AND AWAY WE GO

I am sure that current MLS Training Manager Paul Rejer the man who really raised the standard of the PGMOL Assistant referees will be watching closely.

KH at 2014-06-19 15:58:47
Howard is a very experienced official and his preparation will have left no stone unturned. In the time leading up to the game he will with his assistants have discussed how they will operate. Howards briefing is precise and very detailed. His warm up on the field of play prior to kick off is very carefully planned.

KH at 2014-06-19 15:55:50
The referee today is Howard Webb supported by his usual team of Assistants Darren Can and Mike Mullarkey. They of course were the team that officiated the 2010 World Cup Final.
