Final Match Thoughts

AM at 2016-04-03 00:17:43

This game was played in Snow blizzard conditions and also bright sunshine!

A 1-0 win for Chicago their first win of the season and this game changed for PU following the red card shown to Greaville No. 2 of PU following his serious foul play challenge on an opponent which correctly saw him see red for this wild and serious foul play challenge.

There was a key match decision in the 89th minute which saw a non penalty award to PU and with no benefit of any replay then we have to support the referee`s judgement , he was close to play with a good view and immediately signalled NO!

Referee Silviu Petrescu has overall judged his level of involvement well detecting foul / non foul. The 3 yellow cards issued were all consistent and correct. His fitness, movement and communication arm / hand signals have been effective. Also he has used his whistle effectively and made this talk for him throughout the game. Good positioning throughout and I must say that in my first viewing this season of an MLS game then I have been impressed by what I saw tonight from our referee. Both assistants supported the referee indicative of good pre match instructions. We saw examples tonight of good eye to eye contact in particular before throw in judgements were made. Overall a good night all round. Well done Match Officials.

Again fk to PU the referee`s close proximity to play SELLS this decision to all players around him – who dare argue!

AM at 2016-04-02 23:38:29

Yellow Card

2 of CF for pulling back his opponent in that PU last attack – the referee sets up that fk in a positive way – he gets the defensive wall back the required 9.15M distance.

Communication signals

AM at 2016-04-02 23:36:09

The Referee indicates with an arm movement the reason for his last fk award if it helps to sell a decision then communication by hand / arm is always helpful for player, spectators and team officials

67

AM at 2016-04-02 23:34:11

Chicargo Fire offside again

66

AM at 2016-04-02 23:33:40

Chicargo score a goal only to be ruled out for offside – this looked very close but with no view or side on replay it is difficult to judge this offside key decision judgement

Match Control to date

AM at 2016-04-02 23:25:25

The referee has awarded a free kick to PU from a close position good use of the whistle is heard and also did you notice good arm and hand signals seen?

Serious Foul Play = red card

AM at 2016-04-02 23:22:08

A tackle that endangers the safety of an opponent MUST be sanctioned as serious foul play and the player must be shown a red card. The serious foul play challenge by Greavalle was used with excessive force against his opponent

GOAL! 1-0 SCORED BY 77 OF CHICARGO FIRE

Going back to that red card

AM at 2016-04-02 23:16:50

The Referee was clear and positive in that last showing of the red card to the No. 2 of PU and there are no complaints by any player.

46

AM at 2016-04-02 23:14:42

Red Card

Greavalle of PU is shown a straight red card for serious foul play – CORRECT DECISION FOR THAT WILD AND SERIOUS FOUL PLAY CHALLENGE ON HIS OPPONENT

2nd half is underway

AM at 2016-04-02 23:12:23

PU to kick off – as the referee asks the PU gk to remove a towel from the PU goal prior to kick off – we are now underway

Match Officials - Half time summary

AM at 2016-04-02 23:06:25

The referee Silviu Petrescu has controlled this game to date by correct application of law reading foul / non foul well, he has managed the players well and correctly shown 2 yellow cards one to each team. He has shown a very good work rate, including some sprints when required on breakaways. Good positioning at CKs and for the ball dropping zone area from GK clearances. There has been the rapid change in the weather conditions heavy snow part way through the first half which always bring added pressure for the referee. He continued through this heavy snowfall and strong winds to end the first half in bright sunshine. What a contrast in weather conditions seen here in Chicargo!

Good support from both Assistant Referees seen to date.

45 minutes

AM at 2016-04-02 22:54:45

Half Time

0-0 – no additional time and that is correct

44

AM at 2016-04-02 22:54:04

Referee takes a good view on that last PU gk – dropping zone.

42

AM at 2016-04-02 22:52:49

The referee just gets caught up in play in that last PU attack on the edge of the CF penalty area – a position wider on the left hand side would have assisted him in keeping away from active play

41

39

AM at 2016-04-02 22:49:24

PU now hit the CF post from Sapong

36

AM at 2016-04-02 22:48:22

Yellow Card

Ramos of CF for a pull back on the PU player the referee has tried to play an advantage which has not been able to happen so the referee then brings back play and also shows the yellow card. Good refereeing seen here.

35

AM at 2016-04-02 22:45:23

To date the referee has read very well foul / non foul his movement and sprint have been good as has his overall management of players.

32

AM at 2016-04-02 22:42:18

CK to PU good viewing position taken up by SP

30

AM at 2016-04-02 22:40:02

Incorrect decision that last throw in should have been awarded to CF as the ball was last played out of play and off a PU player.

28

AM at 2016-04-02 22:38:17

PU hit the bar in that last breakaway

27

AM at 2016-04-02 22:37:38

Offside against CF awarded by PB looked to be a very close decision on replay

25

AM at 2016-04-02 22:35:27

In that last FK to PU the referee has had to intervene to get the defensive wall back the required distacnce of 9.15 metres maybe the use of the spray would have assisted him here

Tonights Referee

AM at 2016-04-02 22:33:59

Silviu Petrescu is from Canada and is 47years old and has refereed 106 MLS games from 2006 to 31.12.2015 – Major honour to date is referee MLS Cup 2012

21

AM at 2016-04-02 22:31:16

Good assisting from GF to ensure that the ball is correctly placed within the corner quadrant at that last ck to PU

Weather conditions in Chicargo!

AM at 2016-04-02 22:29:43

We now move into bright sunlight what a contrast as the referee brings out the spray for the first time in the game with the fk to Union

18

AM at 2016-04-02 22:28:04

Moving ball at that last free kick to CF and the referee correctly brings back play for the fk to be retaken

Driving snow is now settling on the playing surface, with a strong wind.

13

AM at 2016-04-02 22:23:49

Good movement and flag technique seen from PB on the far touchline in that last CF attack

12

AM at 2016-04-02 22:21:37

2 of PU Yellow Cardfor a reckless challenge on his opponent – correct decision

CK to PU

AM at 2016-04-02 22:20:12

With the snow falling and a strong wind it is making conditions very difficult for the players – also match officials are having to focus and increase their concentration levels

Assistant Referees

AM at 2016-04-02 22:17:47

Phil Briere (PB) is on the far touchline with Gianni Facchini (GF) on the near touchline – Technical Area side

Early free kick to PU

AM at 2016-04-02 22:16:27

Good early detection from our referee Silviu Petrescu (SP)

Kick off

AM at 2016-04-02 22:14:59

Important at the kick off that Players from each team are in their own half prior to kick off. Philadelphia Union had a player well in the Chicargo half before kick off

Snow before kick off

AM at 2016-04-02 22:13:00

Conditions look very cold with snow lying around the outside of the ground

We are already for kick off

Pre Match Build up

AM at 2016-04-02 22:04:52

The Fire return to MLS play following a second draw in as many matches last time out, reaching a scoreless result with Columbus Crew SC on March 19.

Union are coming off a second consecutive victory, a 3-0 win vs. the New England Revolution on March 20 at Talen Energy Stadium, as C.J. Sapong recorded his second career two-goal game in MLS. Union have won back-to-back games in league play for the first time since May 17-24, 2015.

The Fire have not lost to Union over six consecutive meetings in MLS play, with two wins and four draws since the last Philadelphia victory in the series, May 18, 2013 in Chester. The Fire won 1-0 at Toyota Park last March, the Fire’s first win at home vs. Union since 2012; Philadelphia had won two of the four Bridgeview meetings in between, with two draws.

The Fire have come away with points on their last three trips to Chester, with draws in the last two meetings there.

The teams did meet in a US Open Cup semifinal last year, Union reaching the title game for a second year in a row with a 1-0 win in Chester.
