A very pulsating game and one of the best entertaining semi finals I have seen in a long time. Although Chelsea ran out 4-2 winners Tottenham must take credit as well after everything that has happened this week. Lets not forget about Martin Atkinson and his team they contributed to making this game the spectical that it was. He wasn't fussy, he allowed physical contact, his recognition of challenges in my opinion was excellent, his anticipation of play and reading of the game was the key aspect of his performance. He slowed the game down when he needed to maintain control. Well done to Martin and his team I though you were excellent.

MH at 2017-04-22 19:11:18
Chelsea win 4-2 and they are on their way to Wembley again for the final.

Full Time

MH at 2017-04-22 19:08:18
Yellow CardC7 for a foul on T20, correctly given and pleasing to see that it is in the 93rd minute and Martin issues the caution.

MH at 2017-04-22 19:05:41
A minimum of 4 minutes added time.

MH at 2017-04-22 19:01:08
One of the pleasing aspects of Martin's game today is his reading of the game and his anticipation of play, getting him into the correct positions and giving him the optimal viewing angle.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:58:19
Martin will have to keep a close eye on proceedings now and make sure that Tottenham do not lose their discipline.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:56:13
No chance for the keeper

MH at 2017-04-22 18:55:42

GOAL!C10 great strike by the Chelsea sub.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:50:00
A substitution for Chelsea C4 ON, C11 OFF.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:48:48
Yellow CardT20, stopping a promising attack, correctly given.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:47:59
Great game anyone can win this, let's hope it's won in normal time.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:46:42
Well done Martin, no foul on C10.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:44:59
Foul given to Tottenham correct.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:43:20
Substitution for Tottenham, T7 OFF, T2 ON.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:41:12
Going back to the penalty claim by Tottenham it appears that C6 made contact with T20 before the ball, impossible for the officials to see. Also the referee will look to see if there is any change of direction with the ball.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:37:06
Foul given to Chelsea.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:36:06
Substitutions for Chelsea. C23 OFF, C19 ON, C22 OFF, C10 ON.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:34:55
The intensity has gone up considerably in this game and Martin now has to slow this game down to maintain his control as there are strong challenges going in from both teams.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:32:07
Tottenham appeal for a penalty but it looked like C6 played the ball.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:27:19
GOAL!T20 brilliant equaliser.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:25:21
Pleasing to see Martin slowing the tempo down giving the small free kicks.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:23:43
Foul correctly given against C7.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:23:02
Perhaps T20 unlucky not to get a free kick after being blocked by C30.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:22:05
Foul by C28 on T10 Martin has a word with C28. In my opinion correct.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:19:52
Chelsea to get the second half underway.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:18:29
The officials will be gathering their thoughts in the dressing room and Martin will be telling them to stay fully focused and not to let our concentration levels drop.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:11:11
The big talking point was the penalty just before half time which in my opinion was correctly given and it adds value to the decision when the assistant comes in and helps the referee. They are the incidents as a referee you want your assistants to get involve in. Adds credibility to the decision. Well done match official same again second half please.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:07:36
Half Time

MH at 2017-04-22 18:07:15
Yellow CardC3. As I said earlier C3 next challenge he will be cautioned and he was, deservedly so.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:06:19
Tottenham goalkeeper got away with a handball outside his box as he slid out with the ball in his hand, initially committing no offence and he momentum took him out of the box so a free kick should have been given nothing else. Difficult for the assistant to see that as he wasn't directly in line.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:04:09
Although there was a short delay in giving the penalty Martin was possibly unsure looking to assistant for assistance who duely obliged. Well done assistant referee Ian Hussin.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:02:19
A minimum of 2 minutes added time.

MH at 2017-04-22 18:01:35
GOAL! C22

MH at 2017-04-22 18:00:54
PENALTY given to Chelsea after a challenge by T7 on C15. When you go to ground in that manner you run the risk and you are asking questions of the officials.

MH at 2017-04-22 17:58:54
Looks like a penlty to me!!

MH at 2017-04-22 17:57:18
Clash of heads between C30 and T23, well done Martin blowing straight away.

MH at 2017-04-22 17:55:38
Offside given by Burt.

MH at 2017-04-22 17:53:59
Good to seen the Chelsea pensioners in the crowd.

MH at 2017-04-22 17:52:10
C3 again foul on T16 he has to be careful, I fear his next challenge will be a caution. Martin has just had a word off the ball with him. Good man management.

MH at 2017-04-22 17:50:40
C3 has just fouled T20 and Martin has played on, it was only possecional advantage, that's where you need to kill the game and give a free kick. As I said the game can run away from you and someone like T20 Ali could lose his discipline.

MH at 2017-04-22 17:48:18
I think there's more goals in this game.

MH at 2017-04-22 17:46:35
There are lots of little battles going on around the pitch and Martin will be aware as he is looking around when he has the opportunity. He will have to be careful that he doesn't let the game run away from him and slow the game down when needed.

MH at 2017-04-22 17:44:32
Good position by Martin when T10 goes to ground in the box. No foul.

MH at 2017-04-22 17:42:06
C30 clearing the ball falling to the ground under the challenge of T20 who accidentally stands on C30's ankle. In my opinion clearly accidental.

MH at 2017-04-22 17:40:13
C30 goes down injured???

MH at 2017-04-22 17:38:19
Strong challenge by C3, you can see he clearly slips. Good to see Martin showing emphathy for the game and I agree no caution.

MH at 2017-04-22 17:36:36
Good to see Martin run alongside C7 and have a friendly word with him.

MH at 2017-04-22 17:35:36
Foul by C7 correctly given.

MH at 2017-04-22 17:34:37
GOAL!T10 excellent header... Game on

MH at 2017-04-22 17:33:15
Correct foul given to Tottenham.

MH at 2017-04-22 17:32:11
Good advantage played by Martin after an offside flag by Ian Hussin.

MH at 2017-04-22 17:30:49
No foul given against T20, looked a good decision. T20 went down to easily looking for a free kick.

MH at 2017-04-22 17:28:55
The first 10 minutes is very intense with Martin moving around very well in the early stages.

MH at 2017-04-22 17:26:47
Going back to the reckless challenge by T4 it's pleasing to see Martin refereeing the football match and not the occasion. All referees like to manage challenges early in the game but there are some that you cannot manage and this was one. It was excellent to see that Martin stamped his authority on the game to let players know that these challenges are unacceptable.

MH at 2017-04-22 17:23:20
From the resulting free kick Chelsea take the lead.

MH at 2017-04-22 17:22:35
GOAL! C22

MH at 2017-04-22 17:22:01
Yellow CardFor T4, correctly given by Martin.

MH at 2017-04-22 17:21:21
Has to be a yellow card for a foul on C11 by T4. Reckless challenge.

MH at 2017-04-22 17:16:58
Tottenham to get us underway.

MH at 2017-04-22 17:15:06
It's good to see Martin looking relaxed and smiling.

MH at 2017-04-22 17:13:01
It's a great feeling walking out onto the Wembley pitch with the atmosphere of the crowd. Every referees dream.

MH at 2017-04-22 17:11:50
It will be interesting to see if Chelsea will miss Gary Cahill as him and Luiz have formed a formidable partnership at the back for Chelsea this season.

MH at 2017-04-22 17:09:23
5 minutes to kick off.

MH at 2017-04-22 16:47:28
Kick off in 28 minutes

MH at 2017-04-22 16:46:31
Tottenham and their fans will be looking for revenge after the last semi final encounter with their opponents back in 2012. Chelsea ran out winners on that occasion after a very controversial goal was given. Referee Martin Atkinson judged the ball to have crossed the line which replays clearly showed it did not. Incidentally Martin is our referee for this game. He will be happy that goal line technology will be used today. Martin has been one of our most consistent performers this season and is the right man for the job in hand. He has refereed a total of 35 games to date, issuing a total of 121 yellow cards and 2 reds. He will be assisted by Stuart Burt ( technical side ) and Ian Hussin with Neil Swarbrick 4th official. Good luck to Martin and his team today.

Good evening and welcome to the first of this weekends semi final encounters Chelsea V Tottenham. I feel I must start this blog with the very sad news that we all heard yesterday Ugo Ehiogu had sadly passed away after collapsing on the Tottenham training ground on Thursday. No doubt it was a total shock and disbelief to everybody. I had the privilege of refereeing Ugo on many occasions. He was a really nice person and an absolute gentleman on and off the pitch. All of us at you-are-the-ref.com send our condolences to the family and friends at this very very sad time. RIP Ugo.
