My question to you is……

As the Saints go marching on over the bridge – was this a bridge too far for Bobby Madley?

Whilst this was quite clearly Bobby`s biggest game to date, my question to you is was Bobby ready for this big challenge? I am sure with all the BIG talking points coming out from this game. His confidence which to date has been steadily improving has this been knocked following this big and high profile appointment.

For me in this game there were times when I felt that the game was running away from Bobby. He had 2 key match decisions in the 1st half both which went incorrectly against Southampton. They also had 3 yellow cards at half time, one of which could have been avoided if RM had viewed the first challenge on Bertrand by Willian.

I have discussed at half time that for me grappling at CKs was not being prevented and VAN DIJK had his shirt nearly pulled off by Invanovic (not seen) which should have resulted in a penalty kick to S.

Mane has then been felled in the penalty area by Ramires and again a penalty kick should have been awarded to Saints. We discussed RM moving the whistle to his lips and then change his mind I wonder why? it just shows at this level every movement by a referee is watched and dissected.

I have also mentioned – movement, sprinting, wide angles and the best position to view which I believe will all add to RMs Man Management and persona.

In the 2nd half we discussed the non award of the penalty kick to Chelsea and the showing of the yellow card to Falcao for simulation this I deemed to be very harsh and is not always a justification when not awarding a penalty kick. Again replays appear to suggest that Falcao was going down just before contact from Stekelenburg, but in real time could have been awarded, although you can see from replays why this was not awarded. Again, a wider view for Bobby to the left of the penalty area would have added to his decision making process and added credibility to his decision making accuracy in this situation.

There were times as we moved into the 2nd half that RM needed to slow things down and do things in his time. There are times as a referee when you need to adopt a safe refereeing strategy and not let the game run away from you.

Positive areas seen were from both ARs who supported the referee well solid performances from both, good offside decisions seen and all ball out of play decisions were correct as mentioned in my BLOG.

Added time is important and again in the 2nd half I felt that this fell well short.

In summary this was a BIG appointment for Bobby and upon reflection which I know is easy it was a bridge too far and a game at the wrong stage of the season, when he could have received later on in the season with his confidence remaining in tact. But maybe with the current shortage of top referees then these games are needed to be refereed by those referees not yet ready?

One for debate and The Ref Show on Monday..

AM at 2015-10-03 19:26:11

Added time should have been at least 6 minutes + we had a S. sub in added time and it is important to fully allow for all stoppages, particularly when you think S. had a sub in added time!

Throw in to C. Positive flag from MP just what is needed in the closing stages of this game

AM at 2015-10-03 19:21:43

C. offside by MM, again no replay in this situation

AM at 2015-10-03 19:21:04

5 minutes of added time, do you think this is enough? I thought at least 6 minutes when you think of all the stoppages in this half.

S. sub Mane off Yoshida on – tactical also thoughts of Mane on a yellow card by Koeman

AM at 2015-10-03 19:18:32

RM now needs to be totally fully focussed as we enter added time..

AM at 2015-10-03 19:17:14

How much added time will there be?

My thoughts at the moment at least 6 minutes..

AM at 2015-10-03 19:16:19

Mane on a yellow card commits a free kick he needs to be careful. RM could have had a final calming word here to slow things down a bit, but decides to keep play moving.

AM at 2015-10-03 19:15:05

FK to S. as Pelle isYellow Card

reckless and becomes No. 5 of The Saints in RMs notebook.

C. fk spray out and RM walks the player wall back. Ensures all correct as he manages this process well in his time.

AM at 2015-10-03 19:12:40

Good flag from MP correct to flag as RM plays a good advantage to C. and we see a ck to C. Good teamwork here.

AM at 2015-10-03 19:10:46

S. offside not shown on replay but there is a clear flag from MP with good retention of the flag to ensure the correct placement of the ball. Good practice for all AR`s

AM at 2015-10-03 19:08:51

A sudden sprint from RM across play shows us all that there is a clear sprint there, I wish that RM would adopt this more often.

Yellow Card16 Ward Prowse for a tug of the shirt on a C. player – now 4 yellows for S.

AM at 2015-10-03 19:06:26

Another great effort from S. RM needs to slow things down somewhat to remain in control as he plays an advantage for C. Safe Refereeing..

S. 11 OFF 9 ON – Tactical for S. as they look to wrap up matters with an away win

AM at 2015-10-03 19:03:04

GOAL! 1-3 Pelle, Saints come back from 0-1 to recover and The Saints March On..

C. sub 21 off 18 on – C. throw on a striker option.

AM at 2015-10-03 19:01:07

Having seen a number of replays of the non award of the penalty kick to C. Then my view is that the referee was correct to not award a penalty kick as FALCAO appeared to be going down just before the challenge from The S. g/k. I don’t think it was a yellow card and maybe the referee has shown this to justify his non – award!! which should not always be the case..

AM at 2015-10-03 18:58:16

We will shortly be reviewing the non penalty award to Chelsea and the yellow card shown to Falcao….

AM at 2015-10-03 18:57:27

Ivanovic is late and he is fortunate not to be shown a yellow card

AM at 2015-10-03 18:56:29

Final warning for FALCAO as John Terry is used as his Captain to calm things down. But for me despite how incorrect the 1st yellow may have been to Falco this for me should have been a 2nd yellow followed by a red card and his game should by now be over and out.

Chelsea sub – Willian off Pedro on

AM at 2015-10-03 18:52:49

Mane scores and he will no doubt feel really pleased after the incorrect call on him in the first half to make it 1-2. Game now on. How Chelsea will rue the non penalty award, but was it?

AM at 2015-10-03 18:46:10

If we look at that last S. attack then RM has stopped directly behind play he needs to be moving wide to get the best viewing angle

AM at 2015-10-03 18:42:36

Again, we look at learning points from out top referees and RM seems to be walking around players and the ball, he needs to get out of player space and move wider to create those better viewing angles and inject some sprints. This is key in your refereeing performance

AM at 2015-10-03 18:39:57

FK to S. correct award by RM he really needs to put in some zip and sparkle like Clattenburg, Oliver and Taylor to remain in control and give the BIG decisions

46 – video review needed!!

AM at 2015-10-03 18:36:31

Look at both penalty kicks not awarded to Saints (and should have been) again we need to look at video review.

Half time subs

AM at 2015-10-03 18:34:30

Saints 16 on and 14 off

Chelsea 7 off and 21 on

Both players going off on a yellow!

2nd half underway..

Half time summary

AM at 2015-10-03 18:33:14

Bobby Madley –

If we look at the key match decisions so far in this game then Bobby has got 2 incorrect calls as I have made reference to in my BLOG.

13 MINS Van Dijk has his shirt nearly pulled off by Ivanovic in the Chelsea penalty area from a ck – a penalty kick to Saints would have been correct here as grappling returns this is happening particularly from S. cks. RM position and detection must improve here.

31 MINS – Mane goes down under a challenge from Ramires and RM seems to think and then go for the whistle, but changes his mind why? he seemed to have a clear view from a static position. I wonder why? this was clear penalty kick and should have been awarded to S. Did you notice how TV picked this up as well, with the whistle.. There is no hiding place. Bobby just believe in yourself and give it!

The yellow card delivered to Bertrand whilst being correct, was the 2nd foul with Willian`s first foul on Bertrand being missed.

Bobby will need to step up in the 2nd half so that this game does not get away from him.

3 YELLOW to SAINTS and 1 CHELSEA so far.

Is this a bridge to far for Bobby? he has to work hard in the 2nd half to pull this game back. Keep an eye on the grappling at cks.

Both ARs low key and supportive.

Minimum of 2 minutes added time

AM at 2015-10-03 18:15:23

GOAL! 1-1

What a cracker from Davis and whilst Saints may well feel that decisions have gone against them they can have no complaints with a superb equaliser and fully deserved!

AM at 2015-10-03 18:13:32

Ramires Yellow Cardcorrect persistent

AM at 2015-10-03 18:12:03

Bertrand through good non offside call here from MM and Begovic saves well for a ck to Saints.

AM at 2015-10-03 18:11:05

Well we have replays of the penalty incident and for me it should have been awarded to Saints. RM has clearly thought about it, was in a good static position, and then changed his mind. What has changed his mind? has he thought player reputation here?

should that be in a referees mind in these situations? you have to judge each situation on its merit. But so far in this game everything seems to be going against The Saints. 3 yellow cards and 2 penalties not awarded?

Free kick to C. following a flag indication from MM GOOD SUPPORT SEEN HERE FROM MM

AM at 2015-10-03 18:05:41

Yellow Card

Mane gets yellow for simulation 2nd incident in 60 seconds! we will discuss the penalty incident in a moment..

AM at 2015-10-03 18:04:41

Mane goes down in the Chelsea penalty area under a challenge from Ramires and looks in vain at RM for a penalty kick, RM seems to go for his whistle but then says NO was he going to give it?

Let us know what you think by contacting us either on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at

AM at 2015-10-03 18:00:27

Hazard on Cedric no free kick awarded here and again RM from some distance shakes his head although replays confirm a fk to S. would have been correct. I would just like to see RM get that bit closer to the dropping zone of these high ball challenges.

AM at 2015-10-03 17:58:19

Yellow Card

Bertrand yellow reckless correct –  but for me Willian has fouled him first and the first FK award should have been to S.

The Referees position here just missed the first incident.

AM at 2015-10-03 17:56:07

MP signals throw in to C. and MM then signals S. offside which for me and upon viewing replays looked to be level therefore a non flag would have been correct here. The finest of margins though!

AM at 2015-10-03 17:52:36

No free kick awarded following a collision between Tadic and Ivanovic looked correct. Did you notice RM`S signal to that effect?

AM at 2015-10-03 17:50:21

RM is at times tended to be rather static as play moves around him. I would just like to see an injection of pace similar to the likes of Clattenburg, Taylor and Oliver to get him into the optimum viewing angles / position

AM at 2015-10-03 17:46:22

From the Saints free kick if Bobby Madley had just seen the grappling by Ivanovic on Van Dijk then a penalty kick should have been awarded to Saints. Ivanovic nearly pulled Van Dijk`s shirt off!!

RM seemed to be in a good position to view?

AM at 2015-10-03 17:42:56

Free kick to S. The ball had not fully gone over the touchline so Marc Perry was correct in not flagging a throw in just before the free kick award.

AM at 2015-10-03 17:41:07

Yellow Card

Romeu – reckless – 14 – correct – fk to Chelsea and the spray is out for the first time and from the free kick we have a

GOAL! Willian  1-0

AM at 2015-10-03 17:38:50

Further fk to S. as RM remains consistent in his early award of fk`s to Saints.

AM at 2015-10-03 17:37:25

Fabregas careless fk to Saints, leads to a ck to S.

Jon Moss Referee at Crystal Palace today

AM at 2015-10-03 17:22:48

Did you see the lunchtime game today between Crystal Palace and West Brom. Our own REF CAM Commentator Glenn Turner summarised Jon Moss`s Refereeing performance with the following statement:

There is no place at Select Group level for a lazy and apparently unfit referee, and Jon should have a good look at himself because that is how his performance today makes him look.

As a Headteacher, I am sure he is used to reports on his students, and here is one he may have read previously, but sums up his display at Selhurst Park today…”COULD DO BETTER”.

Pre Match Chat

AM at 2015-10-03 17:16:33

Did you see the lunchtime Football League Championship Game between Wolves and Huddersfield? a big talking point in this game was the yellow card shown by Referee Chris Kavanagh to Wolves Le Fondre received in the 68th minute for simulation. Replays show that a red card would have been correct. Interestingly, will the FA review this decision? Will the yellow card be rescinded to Le Fondre and will Jed Steer then receive retrospective punishment?

This would have been an opportunity for video review to come into play and whilst this decision did not affect the overall result this still does not make it right and if the penalty kick had been scored then at this stage the score would have been 3-0 to Wolves and Huddersfield would have been down to 10 men.

Pre Match Build Up

AM at 2015-10-03 17:10:41

Welcome to this evening`s Refcam commentary game.

We have another quality game as the current Premier League Champions Chelsea host Southampton FC from the South Coast of England.

Chelsea have made a stuttering start to their domestic campaign with only 2 wins so far from 6 games, but enjoyed the defeat of Arsenal 2-0 and also gained a point at Newcastle in last Saturday`s 2-2 draw.

John Terry returns to the starting XI for Chelsea, with Kurt Zouma taking his place on the subs bench.

Meanwhile, Southampton have Bertrand back in defence with Pelle and Tadic up front.

There is an abundance of talent on show today though, with the likes of Fàbregas, Hazard and Falcao at the blues’ disposal and for the Saints Van Dijk and Fonte form a formidable pairing in defence for The Saints.

So who will be the winners today? can The Saints upset the odds and produce a win?
