He did redeem himself with some credible decision-making during extra time but this must not mask what was an overall poor display which was below the standards expected at this level.
RCT at 2015-03-11 23:20:00
We firmly believe that the referee suffered a loss of confidence following the incorrect decisions, although in fairness to him the antics of both sets of players did not help him, although referees in the final stages of the Champions League should have the qualities to deal with these situations.
RCT at 2015-03-11 23:19:01
PSG will blame the referee for having to play 55 minutes with 10 men, Chelsea will blame the referee for not awarding the penalty at the end of the 1st half.
RCT at 2015-03-11 23:17:50
Chelsea out – PSG through !!!!
In summary, this was a classic case of one very poor decision causing problems for the referee for the remainder of the game. The general consensus of opinion is that the referee’s decision to dismiss Ibrahimovic was incorrect, which led to a series of poor decisions, including the non-award of a penalty to Chelsea at the end of the 1st half.
RCT at 2015-03-11 23:11:28
Credit due to the assistant referees, they have maintained their focus and concentration when the boss has not had the best of evenings.
RCT at 2015-03-11 23:08:13
Well isn’t this game bonkers – 2-2
RCT at 2015-03-11 23:06:38
This game is not over yet, credit PSG for keeping in the game ……
RCT at 2015-03-11 23:04:23
10 minutes to go – keep focused Mr Referee
RCT at 2015-03-11 23:00:10
We were speculating at the start of the game that away goals could come into play, a PSG equaliser would mean the away team would go through. The referee needs to continue to focus on the final 15 minutes.
RCT at 2015-03-11 22:57:54
Diego Costa was very unlucky to be penalised then, his challenge was fair and the ‘chosen one’ has some choice words for the referee!
RCT at 2015-03-11 22:51:59
the referee now needs to start the process of rebuilding his confidence, the accuracy of the penalty kick decision will have done no harm at all and he has just made a good judgement when Hazard was challenged in the penalty areaand he correctly awarded a goal kick to PSG
RCT at 2015-03-11 22:48:50
Chelsea take the lead , this time a credible decision by the referee to award the penalty kick to Chelsea
RCT at 2015-03-11 22:43:35
Bayern Munich 7, Shaktar Donesk 0, bet the referee had a quiet time in that one !!!
RCT at 2015-03-11 22:41:49
Drogga enters they arena – another interesting twist perhaps ?
RCT at 2015-03-11 22:40:26

Time for a breather – the referee needs to clear his head and clear his mind – although I fear that the game will continue to drift away from him
RCT at 2015-03-11 22:36:20
Costa is now behaving like a petulant schoolboy, surely one of the five match officials should have detected his off the ball misdemeanors – that’s a missed second yellow card !
RCT at 2015-03-11 22:33:46
Zouma lends his considerable presence in calming the players, the Chelsea sub in a “big unit” as David Lloyd would say
RCT at 2015-03-11 22:30:45
Well, that makes life interesting, Diego Costa’s new best friend equalisers with a bullet header. It had to be David Luiz didn’t it !
RCT at 2015-03-11 22:25:09
Sheffield born Gary Cahill strikes the opening goal – we are proud of our boys here at You Are the Ref HQ !
RCT at 2015-03-11 22:19:27
Verratti, eventually, gets what he deserves in the form of a caution – perhaps that could have happened 20 minutes ago. It’s still stems back to the end of the 1st half when the decision-making was poor and the PSG players still feel aggrieved
RCT at 2015-03-11 22:17:29
Diego Costa gets what he deserves, David Luiz is cautioned for playing a game of “my dad is bigger than your dad”
RCT at 2015-03-11 22:16:10
I sense that the referee is going through the motions, his body language gives the game away, he does not look comfortable
RCT at 2015-03-11 22:09:01
in fairness to PSG, they have kept their shape even though they are playing with 10 men and they are still very much in the game.
RCT at 2015-03-11 22:06:56
I think we will have more yellow cards before the end of the game, and perhaps even another red, it’s been that sort of evening !
RCT at 2015-03-11 22:04:56
This may seem harsh – but I firmly believe that the player’s no longer have the confidence in the referee’s decision making process, and that can’t; be good !!
RCT at 2015-03-11 22:02:47
That was nearly the sting in the tail – which followed a very good offside decision by the assistant referee in allowing PSG the goalscoring opportunity
RCT at 2015-03-11 21:58:12
Is it just me, but has anyone ever seen Diego Costa smile !!
RCT at 2015-03-11 21:56:00
Rameris joins the yellow list, but was his challange any worse than that of Verratti 2 minutes ago. I’m afraid the referee has lost the plot !
RCT at 2015-03-11 21:51:35
The critism continues, thanks to @rebusuk for his tweet “Ref was far too quick to his pocket. Use the time dealing with the Chelsea protest to consider the decision. Poor red IMAO”
RCT at 2015-03-11 21:46:37
Whatever else the referee does for the remaining 45 minutes, or even more perhaps, will be forgotten following his decision making at the end of the 1st half. It now becomes a test of mental strength for him, can you put those decisions to one side to ensure an error-free second-half, it will be tough!
RCT at 2015-03-11 21:43:44
2 very poor decisions by the referee in the final 10 minutes have changed the complexion of the game. @GaryLineker has tweeted us making a plea for technical assistance to help the referees make the correct call ” they need help”. Couldn’t agree more Gary !
RCT at 2015-03-11 21:40:38
A very shrewd comment from Ian @millar409 “in England yellow, UEFA Red”
RCT at 2015-03-11 21:37:49
@Jamesb17 tweets “I see why it was given, but very harsh. Should have been Chelsea freekick and talking to for both players”. Do you agree with James ?
RCT at 2015-03-11 21:35:38
Some great tweets have come in – thank you. @MickHux and @MMAShane firmly believe that the challenge by Ibrahimovi? warranted a yellow card. We have even had a suggestion that the game should be restarted by a drop-ball, that would have been interesting in the circumstances
RCT at 2015-03-11 21:30:48
Some great comments being tweeted – thank you. We’ll discuss them at half-time !
RCT at 2015-03-11 21:29:50
Cavani’s challenge on Costa looks like a penal offence and therefore a penalty to Chelsea ….. it’s been an interesting 10 minutes or so …..
RCT at 2015-03-11 21:27:34
David Luiz and Diego Costa, what’s the betting they won’t be having a beer together after the game
RCT at 2015-03-11 21:26:00
Matuidi joins the yellow card club – it’s getting tense ……
RCT at 2015-03-11 21:25:15
Yellow cards for both number 8s as the referee seeks to retain control, 7 minutes to half-time when hopefully the game wiil settle
RCT at 2015-03-11 21:22:37
On balance, the decision was the correct one, and Ibrahimovi? was foolish to make the challenge, as, I repeat his challenge did put his opponent at risk. let us know what you think tweet us @youaretheref
RCT at 2015-03-11 21:19:02
Massive call by the refreee, Zlatan Ibrahimovi? departs for his challenge – some debate if it was reckless (and therefore yellow) or did it endanger the safety of his opponent, which warrants a red card.
RCT at 2015-03-11 21:16:23
Another good call by the referee in minute 29, Hazard went to ground far too easily were moving forward and the referee did well to ignore his appeal for a freekick
RCT at 2015-03-11 21:14:49
Is this football or is this chess ? it’s very tight and technical out there – both teams are very wary that one slip could cost them a place in the last 8.
RCT at 2015-03-11 21:12:26
That was the 3rd good call by the assistant referees with regard to offside in the last 5 minutes, showing good focus and concentration as they both have had little to do in the opening phases of the game.
RCT at 2015-03-11 21:10:21
I am still of the opinion that the additional assistant referees should be positioned in the referees quarter on the goal-line. There are too close, in my opinion, to the assistant referees and often have the same view of incidents.
RCT at 2015-03-11 21:05:56
20 minutes gone and I sense the game has still not “settled down”, the temperature remains high and it would not surprise me to see the 1st yellow card within the next 10 minutes or so. The longer the game remains at 0-0, the more the temperature of the game will increase.
RCT at 2015-03-11 21:04:45
How do you think the referee is doing so far? Let us know what you think – tweet us @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com.
RCT at 2015-03-11 21:00:22
No foul by Ramires in the penalty area, that was a good call by the referee who was well placed to make the accurate decision
RCT at 2015-03-11 20:58:21
David Luiz goes to ground, off the ball, the referee need several pairs of eyes, one of which should keep an eye on those 2 !
RCT at 2015-03-11 20:56:57
PSG are “hunting in packs” in midfield, not giving Chelsea any space at all, the referee must be aware of this and ensure he remains in control
RCT at 2015-03-11 20:55:34
Was that the referees opportunity for an early yellow card for Motta’s cynical challenge? I can understand his reluctance to caution so early in the game, but on the other side the argument has seen a given players licence for further misconduct ?
RCT at 2015-03-11 20:52:06
I sense a degree of tension in the opening exchanges, important the referee keeps it tight until the game settles down
RCT at 2015-03-11 20:47:57
Don’t forget it’s 1-1 on aggregate – will away goals play a part in the result – are Chelsea slight favourites because they have one
RCT at 2015-03-11 20:45:41
Here we go – the first 10 minutes will be so important – keep it tight Mr. Referee ……..
RCT at 2015-03-11 20:41:52
Teams are on the way …….
RCT at 2015-03-11 20:38:49
How do you think the game will go this evening? Let us know what you think – tweet us @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com.
RCT at 2015-03-11 20:35:15
Zlatan Ibrahimovi? verses John Terry should be an interesting encounter, let’s see how that pans out !
RCT at 2015-03-11 20:34:25
He’s at it again …
“This season we have played teams from the Championship, League One and League Two, but the most aggressive team was PSG. For a team with so much quality I expected more football,” Mourinho said.
RCT at 2015-03-11 20:32:45
Jose Mourinho has intimated that Chelsea will not defend in great numbers “but to go and defend and wait for things to happen is not the right approach….” Interesting ……
RCT at 2015-03-11 20:30:12
if this was not strictly followed, the UEFA delegate has stern words with the match officials after the game, or on one occasion even at half-time!
RCT at 2015-03-11 20:29:19
A number of us here at You Are The Ref have experience of officiating champions league games and I distinctly remember how much emphasis was placed on the timing of the games. There is always timetable of events placed in our dressing room and this had to be strictly adhered to. For example, “players assemble in the tunnel at 19:34″
RCT at 2015-03-11 20:25:52
What always fascinates us here at You Are The Ref if the different styles of refereeing between the Premiership and the Champions League. How often do you hear ” that would have been caution in Europe !”, let’s see what the contrast is this evening.
RCT at 2015-03-11 20:16:18
We notice that the “chosen one” has been playing his mind games again, in true Sir Alex Ferguson style, seeking to gain that 1% advantage by his comments in the press over the last couple of days!
RCT at 2015-03-11 20:13:39
The referee for this evening’s game is Bjorn Kupiers. He has dismissed players in both of his previous champions league matches, let’s see if he makes it 3 in a row this evening!
RCT at 2015-03-11 20:09:43
Welcome to our coverage of this evening’s classic Champions League tie – Chelsea v PSG. The game is beautifully poised at 1-1, and the first goal this evening will go and long way in determining who progresses to the last 8.
