SUMMARY: Kevin Friend has produced a performance which we have come to expect. One of confidence and competence in a “steady, no frills” manner. He quickly recognised the pattern of the game and moved into positions which gave him clear, unobstructed views of all challenges, particularly those inside the penalty area. This allowed him to make judgements which were credible and accepted by players without too much complaint. Good co-operation with his Assistants was noted and this enhanced the teamwork that was achieved. Overall the Officials can be pleased with their contribution to the game where the Referee was mostly unnoticed. S.M. at 2017-12-02 14:46:15
The majority of possession is with Chelsea and play mostly in Newcastle’s half so it is imperative that the Referee maintains a high level of concentration when the game is almost “one way traffic”.
S.M. at 2017-12-02 14:42:37
A Newcastle free kick diffuses the early Chelsea pressure. Minor illegal challenge by Murphy gives Chelsea a free kick. Foul by Diame on Moses penalised by the Referee when no advantage accrues. Sensible refereeing by Kevin Friend. Corner kick for Chelsea.

Chelsea get the second half underway.

Kevin Friend has produced what we have come to expect from Him. A steady, competent performance where nearly all offences have been recognised and penalised accordingly, particularly the cynical foul by Clark. The Referee was well positioned to have a clear view of the two incidents in the Newcastle penalty area where the Chelsea players felt a penalty kick should have been awarded and this ensured that his immediate signal that no deliberate action had taken place was credible. Let’s see if Kevin’s level of control can be replicated throughout the second half.

Lejeune and Morata have a grappling encounter. Half a dozen of one and six ot the other clearly is the Referee’s view as play continues. Another minor offence spotted and penalised with a Newcastle free kick.
S.M. at 2017-12-02 14:10:59
The Referee spot a minor offence by Perez and rightly awards Chelsea a free kick. Foul By Lejeune leads to Chelsea free kick. Holding offence by a Chelsea player as Newcastle try to clear correctly penalised.
S.M. at 2017-12-02 14:07:12

S.M. at 2017-12-02 14:03:15
by Morata gives Chelsea the lead.
S.M. at 2017-12-02 14:02:23
A good throw direction judgement by AR1. Another corner kick for Chelsea. cleared by the Newcastle defence.
S.M. at 2017-12-02 13:57:01
The Referee again well positioned to spot the foul on Fabregas and award a free-kick. Oh dear lack of awareness of players position by the Referee results in a collision between the official and a Chelsea player. That never looks good.
S.M. at 2017-12-02 13:53:28
First corner of the game to Chelsea comes to nothing. Chelsea force another corner. A good view of the challenge in the penalty area by a Newcastle defender ensures the Referee can immediately signal no offence has been committed hence no penalty kick awarded. The subsequent challenge by the goalkeeper on Morata was clumsy to say the least but the Referee decided that there was no deliberate foul. However Chelsea responded with a by Hazard to level the scores.
S.M. at 2017-12-02 13:42:58
Quite a fast pace to the game but the Referee is working well to adopt positions which give a clear view of challenges. Newcastle stun Chelsea with a by Gayle.

Newcastle will be hoping to do better than last time they played at Stamford Bridge 16 months ago when they lost 5-1.. First free-kick goes to the home side for a minor offence. The Referee was very close to give a decision. Now a foul by Drinkwater on Manquillo correctly penalised . A positive start by the Referee.
