What a terrific game this was, congratulations to Chelsea on reaching the semi finals. In my opinion the sending off changed the game completely. Looking back on Michael's performance I felt that his game management wasn't what it should be, his player management wasn't what it should be and his awareness wasn't what it should have been. He failed to slow the game down when it was running away from him and we go back to the 15th minute where he failed to caution MU36 for a clear reckless challenge on C10 thus missing the chance to stamp his authority on the game. It looked as though he was going to caution him by putting his hand to his pocket to take the card out but I do not understand why he did not. This gave MU players license to target C10. MU21 was correctly cautioned for a clear body check on C10 then MU4 made a careless challenge on C10 where the referee stopped the game called the player to him with the MU captain and warned the captain and MU4 no more. A minute later MU21 then makes a careless challenge on C10, Michael decides to show MU21 a second yellow thus the sending off and in my opinion that was not a second yellow but a careless challenge. For me those 2 incidents were poor player management by Michael Oliver. There was further reckless challenges missed by Michael in my opinion MU6 was lucky, MU25 was lucky to escape cautions for reckless challenges and MU5 was lucky not to be sent off for a stamp on C10 and that happened straight in front of the assistant Stuart Burt. Once again Stuart Burt missing a key match decision. When Michael looks back on his performance I think he will be disappointed at the way he handled this game. The key areas were for me where he can improve is his recognition of careless and reckless challenges, knowing when to slow the game down and his player and game management and also the awareness of what was going on around him wasn't what it should have been and player's lost trust in his decision making. On a positive note his positioning and movement and sprinting ability was very good.

I'm sorry Michael what are you doing that is a clear caution for MU6.
MH at 2017-03-13 22:23:16
MU18 Correctly cautioned for a reckless challenge.
MH at 2017-03-13 22:22:43
MU25 lucky not to be cautioned after a foul challenge, got away with one earlier should have been caution.
MH at 2017-03-13 22:19:29
Excellent advantage by Michael there the advantages that you can play in a game of this intensity.
MH at 2017-03-13 22:18:08
Foul correctly given to Chelsea.
MH at 2017-03-13 22:12:43
I think Michael will be happy that the intensity has slowed in the second half.
MH at 2017-03-13 22:11:40
Also it's having that awareness of what is going on around you which aids player management. A good offside given by Stuart Burt. For me C19 should be cautioned for trying to deceive the referee and trying to get a fellow professional sent off.
MH at 2017-03-13 22:09:09
Going back to MU5 and C19 when things are going on off the ball between players you have to tell your assistant's to keep their eyes on the players while your back is turned.
MH at 2017-03-13 22:07:51
Excellent challenge by MU5 on C19, not a penalty. Well done Michael.
MH at 2017-03-13 22:06:57
Michael has to keep a watchful eye on C19 and MU5.
MH at 2017-03-13 22:04:33
C19 should have made it two nil.
MH at 2017-03-13 22:02:35
Mistake by C30 lets in MU19 and produces a great save by the Chelsea keeper.
MH at 2017-03-13 22:00:38
Offside given by Stuart Burt.
MH at 2017-03-13 21:59:33
On a positive note Michael's fitness and positioning is very good.
MH at 2017-03-13 21:57:30
Another offside given by Jake Collin.
MH at 2017-03-13 21:56:17
Offside given by Jake Collin.
MH at 2017-03-13 21:55:02
Great strike by C7
MH at 2017-03-13 21:53:02
Michael now needs to get a firm grip of this game, slow it down, forget about advantage unless it is an absolute 110% advantage and not just possession.
MH at 2017-03-13 21:49:50
Free kick to MU correctly given.
MH at 2017-03-13 21:48:06
Manchester United to get the second half underway.
MH at 2017-03-13 21:43:47
As I said we were in for a pulsating first half and we have had that. MU21 first caution was correct, however Michael has left himself no where to go after a foul by MU5 on C10 speaking to the MU5 with the MU captain Smalling saying you are targeting Hazard" it has to stop" in my opinion he has picked the wrong incident to do it on. He should have done it on the next foul on C10 by MU21 and told him in no uncertain terms the next time i will show you a second yellow card because that offence in itself for me was a careless challenge and not a second yellow. Michael missed his chance to stamp his authority on this game when he should have caution MU36 for a reckless challenge on C10. He needs to slow this game down otherwise he is in danger of losing control.
MH at 2017-03-13 21:33:19
MH at 2017-03-13 21:31:21
A minimum of 2 minutes added time.
MH at 2017-03-13 21:30:18
Mike Jones has got his work cut out in controlling the two managers.
MH at 2017-03-13 21:29:39
Correct free kick given to MU.
MH at 2017-03-13 21:28:22
As I said earlier Michael has to slow this game down. He has just missed a foul by MU25 on C3. He has to give those, the temperature of this game has gone through the roof. He has had to speak to both managers as a result of missing that foul.
MH at 2017-03-13 21:25:57
It's all going off now!!!!
MH at 2017-03-13 21:25:24
In a game of this magnitude I believe Michael could have managed that second yellow card, in my opinion it was just a careless challenge.
MH at 2017-03-13 21:23:33
Second yellow for MU21 he's off.
MH at 2017-03-13 21:15:43
I think Michael needs to slow this game down a bit otherwise it could run away from him.
MH at 2017-03-13 21:14:32
Foul by MU6 on C22 correctly given.
MH at 2017-03-13 21:14:00
Challenge by MU6 on C10 no free kick given. Michael close to play and in a good position to judge.
MH at 2017-03-13 21:11:55
Going back to what i thought was a caution for MU36 in the 15th minute, it looked as though Michael pulled the card out of his pocket and changed his mind. So there was no yellow card MU36. I believe that Michael was incorrect not to caution as this was a reckless challenge from behind and Michael has missed the chance to stamp his authority on the game. As you can see the temperature of this game has gone up and remember what I said earlier if you don't stamp your authority on the game players will take matters into their own hands.
MH at 2017-03-13 21:07:39
MU21, correct caution, although Michael played an advantage I am sure Chelsea would have preferred a free kick in that situation.
MH at 2017-03-13 21:05:38
This is end to end there must be goals in this.
MH at 2017-03-13 21:04:26
Good to see Michael being proactive with MU5 and C19 at the taking of the corner by talking to the two players before the corner comes over.
MH at 2017-03-13 21:03:25
C10 nearly putting Chelsea one nil up, great save by MU keeper, then C24 also brings a great save from the MU keeper.
MH at 2017-03-13 21:02:09
As a referee sometimes early on in the game you get that chance to stamp your authority on the game and Michael has done that, leaving the players in no uncertain terms where they stand when making those challenges.
MH at 2017-03-13 21:00:17
MU36 correctly cautioned. He may think he has played the ball but he has come through the Chelsea player from behind with a reckless challenge.
MH at 2017-03-13 20:59:10
It's vital in a game of this caliber you pick up all the small free kicks as if you don't it could lead to players losing their trust in your decision making and thus giving you problems with your control.
MH at 2017-03-13 20:57:08
Free kick to Chelsea once again no complains from anybody.
MH at 2017-03-13 20:54:56
Free kick to Chelsea correctly given.
MH at 2017-03-13 20:53:01
Pleasing to see Michael setting his stall out early on by giving two early free kicks that had to be given.
MH at 2017-03-13 20:51:44
Free kick correctly given by Michael after a foul by C19 on MU21
MH at 2017-03-13 20:49:30
First foul by MU5 by C19, correctly given.
MH at 2017-03-13 20:48:38
I feel Michael needs to give this game a chance and let it breath. Must not become to fussy.
MH at 2017-03-13 20:47:28
First corner of the game goes to MU after 55 seconds.
MH at 2017-03-13 20:46:11

MH at 2017-03-13 20:24:48
Good evening and welcome to this evenings Emirates FA Cup quarter final tie between Chelsea and Manchester United. I am sure this will be a pulsating cup tie. With no replay the teams will not want to go into extra time and penalties. Your referee for tonight's game is Michael Oliver, who has been trusted to over see the tie of the round. While this tie will go live around the world, Michael will want to impress the UEFA referees committee to fill the vacant position in the elite group left by Mark Clattenburg. Michael has refereed a total of 31 games to date, showing 94 yellow cards and 2 red cards. He will be assisted by Stuart Burt (technical side) and Jake Collin (far side), 4th official will be Mike Jones.
