Chelsea v Manchester City

Chelsea v Manchester City

Commentary By: Rob Harris

FINAL SCORE: 2 - 1

The Refereeing talking points in this game were

  • Mike Dean demonstrated much skill and confidence to deliver a big game performance
  • A season defining game that looked deceptively straight forward to Referee, but in truth reflects well on the Referee's game plan and on his ability to deliver it!
  • Only key incident of the game called correctly

We often talk about 'big game Referees' and usually only a handful of Referees in any competition can oblige, step forward Mike Dean for this was a season defining game, could City stop Chelsea on their march towards the title and could the visitors keep alive their own faint championship chances? so much at stake! Mike Dean delivered in all respects, he demonstrated much skill in determining the contact threshold on player challenges, allowing play to continue and keeping the spotlight off himself for much of the game but lowering the bar as the tempo rose in the final stages to caution players and maintain his tight grip on the game. That's no mean balance to achieve particularly on a night like this. He also read play well to track the action and maintain excellent final third viewing angles and  ensure a high level of decision making accuracy. Mike Dean has kept himself in great physical shape and moved around the field of play as well as at any time I  can recall. Just the one key Incident with a correct call on a first half Chelsea penalty as Frenandino brought down Pedro. Both Assistants did well, Simon Long had a close offside call as Fernandinho went close from what appeared an offside postion, but as I said it was so marginal, Jake Collin looked solid and supported the Referee well with the Kompany caution. But the plaudits go to Mike Dean for a big game performance that contained so much quality, well done mate!

Summary to follow

90+2

RH at 2017-04-05 21:49:45

Yellow CardKante holds Silva again but this time rightly earns a caution for the offence

90+1

RH at 2017-04-05 21:48:21

Another great advantage from Mike Dean as Nolito was fouled in that City attacking build up

90

RH at 2017-04-05 21:47:12

A minimum of three minutes additional time to be played

89

RH at 2017-04-05 21:46:38

Tactically another masterclass from Chelsea s they drop their wing backs into defence for a back five, notice with more defending players present why Mike Dean is left hand channel looking into the Chelsea penalty area and then more central looking into he penalty area with less players around when City defend

86

RH at 2017-04-05 21:43:12

Great advantage in that last Chelsea attack as Pedro was felled, good awareness from the Referee as the Chelsea player had laid the ball off!

Yellow CardKompany lunges in on Hazard, Jake Collin flags strongly and the City captain see's yellow!

80

RH at 2017-04-05 21:38:46

Chelsea force a corner as play fluctuates from end to end, the Referee has applied himself well tonight, the pressure hasn't come so much from aggression and confrontation, but more from physical exertion as both teams have counter attacked with pace, this was always going to be a demanding game in some shape or form!

77

RH at 2017-04-05 21:34:07

Yellow CardDelph earns a caution for grounding Costa, I can't help but feel that the caution was given for previous offences also

72

RH at 2017-04-05 21:30:28

Silva stops playing as he thought that his colleague Delph had committed an offence, truth was he made an excellent challenge to win the ball, play to the whistle!

71

RH at 2017-04-05 21:28:01

Kompany the aggressor as he goes in carelessly to tackle Hazard, the tempo has risen slightly, but not to the extent that the Referee needs to change his game plan

68

RH at 2017-04-05 21:26:14

Costa goes to ground and lifts a boot to catch Kompany around the knee, a nasty little challenge that had the Referee had the TV replay angle may have shown yellow!

66

RH at 2017-04-05 21:24:33

Courtois catches despite a careless challenge by Kompany, such is the level of respect present in this game, Mike Dean allows the Chelsea keeper to play on with the ball in his hands, good Refereeing

61

RH at 2017-04-05 21:21:19

Silva penalized for a challenge on Pedro, that seemed to suggest the free kick should have  been given the other way! Mike Dean explains to the City players as Bobby Madley exchanges humorous banter with Pep  Guardiola

59

RH at 2017-04-05 21:18:48

Kante pulls back Silva for a free kick from a dangerous position, another of those and the Frenchman may earn a caution!

RH at 2017-04-05 21:16:48

Mike Dean continues to demonstrate superb mobility , he's moving well in the channels and using dead ball time to his advantage to get into position at restarts, a great example to any aspiring Referee!

52

RH at 2017-04-05 21:10:32

TV Replays suggest that Frenandinho was marginally offside as he went close for City earlier, Simon Long keeping his flag down, have to say though in fairness, it was a close call!

51

RH at 2017-04-05 21:08:57

Yellow CardNo surprise as Clichy makes a reckless challenge on Pedro

50

RH at 2017-04-05 21:08:05

We've had half the overall number of first half free kicks in the first five minutes of the second half!

48

RH at 2017-04-05 21:05:59

Matic careless on Delph as City inject more pace into their game this half, Match Officials can never rest on their laurels, this is a new game now!

We didn't have to wait so long for the first free kick of this half as Kante fells Silva with a nasty challenge, words to the offender from the Referee!

The second half has started!

  • Sunday   @ 21.00 Orlando v New York Red Bulls

RH at 2017-04-05 20:53:06

Just seven free kicks so far and no caution in sight, an easy game for the Referee? No! Mike Dean has judged his threshold and tolerance on player contact and with players showing a healthy respect for each other the first free kick didn't materialise until the 15th minute and there hasn't been any reckless challenges. A great example of how to keep the spotlight off yourself on such an important game! Just the one key incident, that being a rock solid award of a penalty for Fernandinho's careless trip on Pedro. Everything could of course change in the second but be that or not, Mike Dean has inspired confidence in his ability to mange the game so far!

RH at 2017-04-05 20:46:31

Simon Long flags  Azpilicueta offside!

40

RH at 2017-04-05 20:40:22

Mike Dean has judged his tolerance level on player contact so well during this first half, his overall management of such an important occasion has been textbook so far!

City state their intentions as they carve Chelsea apart and go close from the restart!

34

RH at 2017-04-05 20:36:15

GOAL!Not Hazards finest spot kick as he converts from a rebound!

33

RH at 2017-04-05 20:35:27

Penalty as Pedro draws a careless challenge from Fernandinho! Nailed on!

33

RH at 2017-04-05 20:34:03

Not much variation in match tempo so far, despite the goals, I suppose that reflects the respect that these teams have for each other, that will change I'm sure if the game is still tight in the later stages!

Delph and Costa tangle in the City half, Mike Dean is on hand to snuff it out with a confident presence and body language, sorted!

26

RH at 2017-04-05 20:27:44

Just taken a look at that Alonso challenge on Aguero a while before he scored, it was a trip no more, despite the antics of the City player!

25

RH at 2017-04-05 20:26:17

GOAL!Aguero levels for Chelsea, and again its doesn't reflect well on the goalkeeper!

23

RH at 2017-04-05 20:24:45

Fabregas careless on Delph, another free kick!

22

RH at 2017-04-05 20:23:20

Shrewd Refereeing here, Mike Dean is keeping a low profile which will allow him greater impact when he intervenes which will aid his credibility with the players, you don't need to get involved when the game is running smoothly, but that could change on one decision!

18

RH at 2017-04-05 20:19:43

Mike Dean wanted that last Chelsea goal kick retaken, but the Chelsea defender played he ball outside of the penalty area, so I'm not sure about that one?

15

RH at 2017-04-05 20:16:13

Its been a low key opening 15 minutes for the Referee with just one free kick  free kick awarded so far for a careless challenge by Costa, but he's  showing his pedigree with superb movement and reading of play!

9

RH at 2017-04-05 20:11:16

GOAL!Hazard opens the scoring for Chelsea!

6

RH at 2017-04-05 20:06:35

Mike Dean looking sharp in his movement, coping well with early changes in the direction of play!

RH at 2017-04-05 20:00:55

If you are watching the game on TV, Simon Long is operating on the far side and the other Assistant Jake Collin is running the nearside touch line.

The following is an extract from Jason Pettigroves excellent ‘Runners and Riders’ piece that can be found on the ‘You are the Ref’ website ahead of each weekend’s Premier League action!

Mike Dean: Chelsea v Manchester City Assistants: J. Collin and S. Long Fourth official: R. Madley

Another official who needs no introduction and who is one of PGMOL’s finest, is Mike Dean.

He continues to split the masses, but there’s little doubting his encyclopaedic knowledge of the laws of the game.

Dislike him for his personality if you wish, but there’s little point questioning his application. He’s wrong occasionally – but not often.

He’ll revel in this top-of-the-table clash and one which Chelsea will be desperate to win to keep the status quo.

Were the Blues to lose for the second time in a week, and nearest challengers Tottenham win, the 10-point gap between first and second will have been reduced to just four.

With Pep Guardiola’s Man City still in the hunt for an automatic Champions League place, they’ll arrive in west London full of attacking verve and intent.

Sit back, relax, enjoy.
