So the Refereeing talking points in this game were
  • First half ruling out of Montero’s strike
  • Referee Assistant co-operation
  • Grappling
  • Well judged cautions in a game of few tempo swings
At the end of this game Mike Dean and his team won’t be the subject of much if any post match debate. The Referee was always in control of this game which was still in the case of Man City a very Important occasion with much at stake. The Referee rightly ruled out a first half Montero strike for a push and his cautions were both well judged and timed. However a couple of aspects of the game require further comment, firstly Referee Assistant co-operation, whilst I thought Mike Dean and Simon Long worked well together I did not feel that things were as smooth with Jake Collin, the delay in signalling City’s goal and a missed second half foul challenge by Mangala on Ayew was disappointing. The other area of concern was the grappling in this game particularly at Swansea set pieces in the City penalty area, the Referee had to intervene on one occasion and could have raised his profile at other times. When you consider the overall quality of Mike Dean’s performance today this aspect of the game was evident. Lets hope that the PGMOL deals effectively with this problem in our game next season. But to finish I would like to praise Mike Dean for his reading of play and anticipation of changes in direction and counterattacking, he was always quick off the mark to track play and arrive in the final third with a good view of any potential incidents. As I said at the start of this summary, they won’t be talking about the Match Officials after this game!

RH at 2016-05-15 16:43:41
Mike Dean is always well placed to view Aguero’s runs in the Swansea penalty area, the City players low centre of gravity always invites a careless challenge fro defenders!

RH at 2016-05-15 16:40:21
Sagna penalised for a careless challenge on Montero but injures himself in the process! a TV replay of the incident highlights Assistant Simon Long strongly flagging for the initial offence that was in his area of responsibility, good lining!

RH at 2016-05-15 16:34:56
Rangel and Nasri clash on the ball, the defender rightly getting the verdict with a free kick!

RH at 2016-05-15 16:33:57
What a great position the Referee was in to award that City corner, working that movement in the channel superbly! he really has read play well today!

RH at 2016-05-15 16:31:57
Yellow CardAnother well judged caution as De Bryune is felled in midfield as Brittan halts that promising City attack with a careless challenge!

RH at 2016-05-15 16:30:23
We haven’t seen swings in match tempo so far but the Referee has raised his game when it mattered with some well judged cautions, just a matter of tidying up this penalty area grappling to seal a good all round effort!

RH at 2016-05-15 16:26:48
Assistant Simon Long with a good supporting flag as Aguero impedes Amat as they challenge for an aerial ball!

RH at 2016-05-15 16:25:22
Yellow CardSagna brings down Montero with a reckless challenge and earns a caution for his efforts, dangerous position for a free kick too!

RH at 2016-05-15 16:24:02
That’s the first time this game that the Referee has got in the way of play in midfield, nothing coming of City’s advance on goal however!

RH at 2016-05-15 16:22:32
De Byune goes to ground, the Referee would never have seen the defenders helping hand from the angle he had, no free kick given

RH at 2016-05-15 16:20:33
You have to say that City have blown some decent chances in this game, that Aguero effort being a good example!

RH at 2016-05-15 16:19:00
Simon Long rightly signalling De Bryune offside

RH at 2016-05-15 16:17:44
Grappling at Swansea set pieces is the only area of concern in the game for me at present!

RH at 2016-05-15 16:16:39
Well to underline my earlier despite words from the Referee its a wrestling match at that last Swansea corner with Mangala and Amat being two of the chief protagonists! It doesn’t look good!

RH at 2016-05-15 16:14:18
Good delayed whistle from the Referee as Navas held Montero who got bogged down with no advantage

RH at 2016-05-15 16:13:03
Referee Mike Dean should be praised for his reading and anticipation of play and his movement to track this game as its been end to end, if you’re watching on TV notice how quick off the mark he is when play changes direction!

RH at 2016-05-15 16:09:41
I would think that Fourth Official Andre Marriner took some stick from that Mangala/Ayew incident, part of the role of being an Assistant at this level is knowing when to ‘come in’ that I feel was such a moment!

RH at 2016-05-15 16:07:22
Ayew goes to ground under a Mangala challenge, both Referee and Assistant are unmoved, didn’t stop a prolonged protest from the Swansea player at official Jake Collin, I think he had a point!

RH at 2016-05-15 16:05:27
I feel that one potential problem area in this game is grappling at set pieces, particularly when Swansea attack, Mike Dean is going to need to keep an eye on this!

RH at 2016-05-15 16:03:07
Just to remind you that due to a technical problem we cannot bring you coverage of the Chelsea v Leicester City game so we are covering Swansea City v Manchester City

RH at 2016-05-15 16:02:53
The second half is underway!

RH at 2016-05-15 15:57:38
A couple of talking points from the first half, firstly the hesitation in awarding the first goal to City, the right decision was made but Mike Dean seemed momentarily confused as it appeared that Jake Collin did not positively confirm with verbal confirmation or body language movement that the goal should stand, but Iheanacho was clearly played on so no problem. The other talking point being Montero’s ruled out strike for a push, from the Referee’s position he would have seen a clear push from the Swansea player on the defender, TV replays show that it wasn’t the most serious of offences but clearly enough to rightly in my view rule the goal out. Other than that two cautions, one for Iheanacho halting a promising Swansea attack with a trip from behind and the other a sound caution for a reckless tackle by Otamendi. Apart from a moments confusion at the scoring of the City goal both Assistants look sharp, Mike Dean being well in control of events at present

RH at 2016-05-15 15:48:24
Half Time

RH at 2016-05-15 15:48:13
GOAL!Swansea equalise! not sure who’ll get credited with the goal, Ayew struck but it took a deflection!

RH at 2016-05-15 15:47:05
A minimum of 1 minute additional time to be played!

RH at 2016-05-15 15:46:29
Yellow CardOtamendi see’s yellow for a reckless challenge on Brittan

RH at 2016-05-15 15:45:24

RH at 2016-05-15 15:44:39
Also in that last yellow card incident Otamendi did this thing of his where he jumps towards the ball in a upright position, I’m not comfortable with it as he’s technically going in two footed, he did the same in the game against Arsenal recently

RH at 2016-05-15 15:42:52
Yellow CardIheanacho cautioned for tripping Rangel from behind!

RH at 2016-05-15 15:40:34
Otamendi rightly pulled up for a careless tackle on Fer

RH at 2016-05-15 15:39:16
Fernandez and Mangala were locked in arm to arm combat at that last set piece in the City penalty area, it would have been harsh in the extreme to have awarded a penalty but with the Referee so close, was taking a risk

RH at 2016-05-15 15:36:46
Cork going in hard on Navas, it wasn’t two footed but was uncompromising fortunately nothing came of it!

RH at 2016-05-15 15:34:57
After some serious City attacking play, its now Swansea who are taking the game to City so Assistant Simon Long is more involved in potential offside calls at present!

RH at 2016-05-15 15:32:27
Just to remind you that due to a technical problem we cannot bring you coverage of the Chelsea v Leicester City game so we are covering Swansea City v Manchester City

RH at 2016-05-15 15:31:41
Not too much grappling at that City corner!

RH at 2016-05-15 15:31:14
A couple of strong midfield challenges there by Swansea but Mike Dean was ideally placed to allow lay to continue!

RH at 2016-05-15 15:29:29
Its not a fiercely competitive game at the moment but it is end to end with counter attacking being the name of the game, both Assistants being actively involved!

RH at 2016-05-15 15:27:44
As City counter attacked with Aguero going close, the Referee is perfectly placed to view the strike as he tracked play so well

RH at 2016-05-15 15:26:30
Aguero rightly flagged offside by Jake Collin

RH at 2016-05-15 15:25:13
The game is pretty much end to end and Mike Dean is coping well with the pattern of play by using the channels and getting into good viewing positions around the penalty area

RH at 2016-05-15 15:23:31
Montero goes to ground in midfield but Mike Dean is unimpressed, good call!

RH at 2016-05-15 15:22:11
Although Swansea are looking to get back into his game the match tempo is still controlled

RH at 2016-05-15 15:19:39
Just to remind you that due to a technical problem we cannot bring you coverage of the Chelsea v Leicester City game so we are covering Swansea City v Manchester City

RH at 2016-05-15 15:18:58
Talking about the City goal, there was a delay in awarding the goal, I’m not sure if Jake Collin was uncertain but Iheanacho was clearly played onside when he scored, the Assistant seemed to hesitate which caused momentary confusion for Mike Dean

RH at 2016-05-15 15:16:10
A good offside decision there by Simon Long as Rutledge came back from an offside position to play the ball

RH at 2016-05-15 15:14:51
If you’re watching this game on TV Assistant Simon Long is operating on the far side Touchline and Jake Collin the other Assistant  is running the touchline on the nearside

RH at 2016-05-15 15:13:17
Just to confirm that our Referee is Mike Dean and his Assistants are Jake Collin and Simon Long, the Fourth official is Andre Marriner

RH at 2016-05-15 15:12:03
No Goal Sagna was pushed in the back by Montero, Mike Dean clearly motioning that he saw a push!

RH at 2016-05-15 15:09:43
Just to remind you that due to a technical problem we cannot bring you coverage of the Chelsea v Leicester City game so we are covering Swansea City v Manchester City

RH at 2016-05-15 15:07:34
GOAL!City Score , but there was confusion between Mike Dean and his Assistant, but the goal stands!

RH at 2016-05-15 15:04:03
