The key positive attributes of Andre's performance were:

  • Knowing when to increase his profile to ensure match control was retained
  • "Doing the business" in the first 5 minutes of the second half - 3 key decisions in quick succession, which set the tone for the rest of the game
  • Exceptional low-profile player management.

Well, I have been coaching, assessing and observing at all levels of football for too many years that I care to remember and I cannot honestly recall any previous occasions when I have NO advice for the match officials, so here is a first for me today.  Andre Marriner and his team were exceptional, there is no other word for it.

3 minutes additional time and we are 'home and hosed' ...... keep the focus Gents ....

85

AH at 2016-10-15 14:15:30

What on earth is Diego Costa on about now.  Your team are 3-0 up and cruising to a well-deserved victory and you are at odds about something. Is the ball the wrong shape, is the grass the wrong colour ?

83

AH at 2016-10-15 14:12:43

Thanks to Simon Jackson for clarifying your tweeted comment, I agree 100% Simon, who describes Andre Marriner's non-involvement as "an art in itself"

79

AH at 2016-10-15 14:09:54

GOAL! As the red sea parts (in this case, the red shirted Leicester defenders) Moses finishes in style to seal the deal for the Home Team  Game, set and match to Chelsea.

80

AH at 2016-10-15 14:06:09

Great to see Andre Marriner trusting his own judgement and allowing Hazard to continue in possession, which eventually leads to a shot on goal, a save by Schmecial and a corner to Chelsea

75

AH at 2016-10-15 14:03:16

Commendable focus and concentration by Simon Beck as he detects that Drinkwater had not prevented the ball from going out of play.

73

AH at 2016-10-15 14:00:04

Costa - the man who could start an argument in an empty wardrobe - has an 'interesting' discussion with his colleagues in the technical area - who is managing this team Diego ?

68

AH at 2016-10-15 13:57:09

Leicester City turn to the cavalry, Mahrez and Slimani, in an attempt to rescue a point - time to turn the focus dial up by a couple of notches .....

65

AH at 2016-10-15 13:54:39

Not wishing to tempt fate, but I am trying to think of any errors, significant or otherwise, made by any of the match officials so far this afternoon.  Tweet us @youaretheref if you think otherwise .......

60

AH at 2016-10-15 13:48:43

30 minutes remaining and it would not surprise me at all if Chelsea started to slow the game down to waste time, something for the match officials to be wary of.  The key sill here for the referee is to identify between 'time wasting' and 'time consuming' ......

55

AH at 2016-10-15 13:45:15

This is much better from the Foxes for the first 10 minutes of the second half, we have much more of a game our hands, the refereeing team need to keep their focus from the first 45, which was commendable.

48

AH at 2016-10-15 13:41:02

Yellow CardAzpilicueta receives the 2nd yellow of the game, correctly so, which illustrates the key skill which referees need at this level.  "Nothing to do" for the first 45, 2 penalty appeals and a caution in the space of 5 second half minutes.  it's all about increasing the referee's profile as required, well done to Andre Marriner so far.

47

AH at 2016-10-15 13:37:25

Commendable refereeing, this time in the other penalty area, and another correct decision as attacker and defender simply collide.  Back for a minute to the first penalty appeal, the referee must take into account the speed of the ball and the distance travelled in deciding intent - no penalty for me.

46

AH at 2016-10-15 13:34:31

The need to be focused from minute 1 of both halves immediately illustrated as Andre Marriner correctly turns away a penalty appeal by Chelsea - no intent - play on - his decision being given with confidence and conviction.

AH at 2016-10-15 13:30:55

Half Time

There is a coaching adage in refereeing which states that “Refereeing starts when the ball is not in play!” This has certainly been the case here in the 1st half, with the ball in play for the majority of the time, which in a sense has deflected the attention away from the match officials. Let’s hope that Andre and his team can keep the same low-profile of the second-half, although here at you are the ref we envisage that the away team will be fired up by their management during the interval, something for the referee to keep a close eye on.

Thank you to Simon Jackson @Jackson_S_D for your tweet.  Simon has commented that the first-half "virtually refereed itself".  I know what you mean Simon, but I have seen many a game where the referee has become over involved where he does not need to be and carnage has ensued.

AH at 2016-10-15 13:17:38

Half Time

So far, so good ...

One of the referee’s main attributes this afternoon has been his ability to communicate with the players. He’s not talking at them he’s talking to them (as he did in the closing seconds with Costa)  and they appear to be accepting his decisions and getting on with the game. This is an object lesson for any up-and-coming referees on how to manage the players.

45

AH at 2016-10-15 13:15:05

The shot count in the first-half is Chelsea 11, Leicester 1, that tells you all you need to know about the game so far ....

43

AH at 2016-10-15 13:12:13

How do you think Andre Marriner and his team are doing so far, let us know by tweeting us @youaretheref

35

AH at 2016-10-15 13:06:46

Now here is a key 10 minutes for the referee, time for the refereeing team to increase their profile, slightly, to bring the first half to a safe conclusion.

32

AH at 2016-10-15 13:04:53

GOAL! Hazard pounces on a piece of good fortune as the ball breaks to him 30 yards out, but his finish is classy and Chelsea double their lead ....

30

AH at 2016-10-15 13:01:15

15 left in the first half and Leicester have to change their approach surely. No shots and no corners so far ....

26

AH at 2016-10-15 12:59:06

Yellow CardHuth welcomes Hazard to the game and Andre Marriner, wisely, takes the first opportunity offered to him to assert his authority.   Another piece of 'text-book' refereeing .....

25

AH at 2016-10-15 12:56:48

25 minutes gone and an object refereeing lesson so far on how not to be involved if you don't need to be - with the referee's lesson being followed by his Assistants.  So far, so good ......

17

AH at 2016-10-15 12:52:03

Once again, good low profile refereeing by Andre Marriner as he subtly applies the advantage clause when Costa had been offended against in the centre-circle.No fuss, no massive signal, just good pro-active refereeing .....

14

AH at 2016-10-15 12:48:10

Likewise, good proactive refereeing from Andre Marriner as he delays the award of a free-kick when David Luiz offended - no advantage materialised, free-kick awarded.  Solid !

13

AH at 2016-10-15 12:46:08

Good pro-active Assistant Refereeing from Andy Garrett, encouraging players from both teams to remain disciplined as play developed in front of him

12

AH at 2016-10-15 12:44:13

Just one penal offence in the first 12 minutes, that would be 4 per-half going forward, the referee would settle for that ratio for the rest of the game !

GOAL! Leicester's defence go walk-about, giving Diego Costa the freedom of West London and to score from no more than 6 meters.

4

AH at 2016-10-15 12:35:53

Nothing much to report in the opening exchanges, mind you Diego Cotsa and Huth have not been called into action yet !!!

1

AH at 2016-10-15 12:30:29

Good luck to the match officials - here we go for the crucial opening period ....

Pre-Match

AH at 2016-10-15 12:27:31

This lunchtime’s referee is Andre Marriner, who makes a prompt return to our RefCam coverage, Simon Beck and Andy Garratt and his Assistants, Stuart Atwell had the 4th official duties.

Pre-Match

AH at 2016-10-15 12:26:07

Just a quick look at the team sheets and Diego Costa verses Morgan / Huth looks like it may be an 'interesting' encounter, not one for the faint-hearted, and not that we should ever pre-judge anything as match officials, but this will be a key factor in the refereeing team's match control.

Pre Match

AH at 2016-10-15 12:17:50

Leicester have chosen to select Mahrez, to start on the bench - probably with one eye on the Champions League fixture, but will this backfire on the Away Team, I fear so .....

Welcome to our coverage of Chelsea v Leicester City from Stamford Bridge.  The current champions have not had the start they were looking for, and today will be a good test for them.
