Chelsea v Arsenal

Commentary By: Ref Cam Team

FINAL SCORE: 2 - 0

Full Time

RCT at 2014-10-05 16:14:19

Full time – martin Atkinson disappointingly inconsistent with his issuing of cards – over to Mark Halsey at Upton park

RCT at 2014-10-05 16:12:23

or was Martin Atkinson seeking to be consistent with Cahill’s 1st half challenge ?

RCT at 2014-10-05 16:11:32

Yellow Cardouch – that has to be red for Welbeck – surely Welbeck’s action ‘endangered the safety on his opponent’ to quote law

As this game draws to a close, we only have a few minutes before the start of West Ham v QPR. Why not stay with us for Mark Halsey’s expert comments here at You Are The Ref

85

RCT at 2014-10-05 16:06:46

Yellow CardHah – Oscar get what he deserves in the 85th minute, asserting authority late in the game, but, to the purist referee, has Atkinson been consistent in his issuing of the cards ?

85

RCT at 2014-10-05 16:04:18

5 minutes to go, the referee perhaps took a risk in deciding to keep the yellow cards to a minimum and ‘only’ issue yellows to Cahill and Koscienly – but it appears to have worked for him …

82

RCT at 2014-10-05 16:02:00

Anything that will change the ‘temperature’ of a game needs to be considered by the referee and his colleagues

81

RCT at 2014-10-05 16:00:43

Typical ‘trigger points’ being goals, yellow and red cards, substitutes, reckless challenges ….

80

RCT at 2014-10-05 15:59:34

10 minutes to remain focused Martin, how will the players react to the ‘trigger point’ of a goal … that is the key to refereeing at ANY level ….

77

RCT at 2014-10-05 15:57:41

Goodnight Arsenal – Chelsea masterclass …. 2-0

72

RCT at 2014-10-05 15:53:48

Chelsea have “parked the bus”, the refereeing team needs to be aware and spare a thought for Steve Child who has become a very inactive Assistant Referee – he needs to remain focussed …..

65

RCT at 2014-10-05 15:46:30

Yellow Carda good delayed caution for Schurlle, the referee returning to an earlier incident …

63

RCT at 2014-10-05 15:44:04

Handball by Fabregas ? Were his arms in a natural / expected position – was the handball intentional – that was a correct decision in our view

60

RCT at 2014-10-05 15:41:21

Do Chelsea stick or twist – do they push for the 2nd goal, or keep what they have – all things for the referee team to be aware of …..

57

RCT at 2014-10-05 15:36:58

There is still an air of tension on the field of play – the refereeing team need to keep a tight reign on proceedings ….

52

RCT at 2014-10-05 15:32:53

Yellow CardIvanovic cautioned, but who was the ‘worse’ offender, him or Gibbs ???

52

RCT at 2014-10-05 15:31:45

Here’s hoping that decision does not come back to haunt him and that he remains in control …..

50

RCT at 2014-10-05 15:30:50

Interesting – Martin Atkinson presented with the ideal opportunity to caution Gibbs to assert his authority early in the 2nd half and he chooses not to …..

48

RCT at 2014-10-05 15:28:42

Mmm – was Flamini fortunate to not be penalised for his challenge …

RCT at 2014-10-05 15:24:31

Or, is this the time to introduce the referral system, wouldn’t that be “fun” with the 2 managers not exactly being best mates ….

RCT at 2014-10-05 15:23:06

Also, referring to Cahill’s challenge, what was the view Martin Atkinson had as opposed to the live coverage on the multiple camera angles – so does this bring into the discussion should the 4th official intervene – which he is entitled to do so, in law …

RCT at 2014-10-05 15:18:23

So, back to law – if you think that Cahill’s challenge was reckless – it’ s yellow.  If you think his challenge was dangerous, it’s red !!!

RCT at 2014-10-05 15:16:45

On the penalty, was Gibbs covering and would the goalkeeper had got to the ball before Hazard

RCT at 2014-10-05 15:12:35

Here at You Are The Ref we’ve just had a small straw poll, 60% of us say yellow for Cahill, 40% red ….

RCT at 2014-10-05 15:11:24

The only really taking point, and the discussions points are not clear cut, should Cahill’s challenge have been a red card, and likewise to Koscielny’s penal offence for the penalty deny an obvious goal scoring opportunity

Half Time

RCT at 2014-10-05 15:09:15

How has the refereeing team done so far ……

RCT at 2014-10-05 15:07:08

Both teams seem to have settled at 1-0 halftime ?

41

RCT at 2014-10-05 15:00:58

Four minutes to half-time, time to focus ….

32

RCT at 2014-10-05 14:54:17

Interesting debate here at You Are The Ref HQ with regard to possible red cards for Cahill’s challenge close to the Technical Area and for the challenge on Hazard which resulted in the penalty ….

27

RCT at 2014-10-05 14:48:00

A penalty with aplomb – superb from Hazard ….

RCT at 2014-10-05 14:47:02

Yellow Card100% correct decision to caution Koscielny

24

RCT at 2014-10-05 14:45:31

The injury to Courtois just allowed a cooling off period, the game suddenly exploded, just proving how the officials at this level need to keep alert and aware, even when the game is ‘quiet’

22

RCT at 2014-10-05 14:42:55

Yellow Cardnow it’s getting interesting, a justified caution for Chambers

20

RCT at 2014-10-05 14:41:56

Emmm – does the intervention of the referee with the 2 managers undermine the authority of the 4th official ?

19

RCT at 2014-10-05 14:40:40

Two outstanding pieces of positional play by Martin Atkinson, well positioned judge no penal offences

Two outstanding pieces of positional play by Martin Atkinson, well positioned judge no penal offences

RCT at 2014-10-05 14:38:11

4th Official Jon Moss earning his match fee, explaining that decision to Arsene Wenger,  ….

16

RCT at 2014-10-05 14:36:49

Great delay on the offside decision from Mike – waited until the offender had played the ball before raising his flag, and object lesson in text-book Assistant Refereeing ….

15

RCT at 2014-10-05 14:35:34

We could do with some passion and commitment – or even a goal. to liven matters

14

RCT at 2014-10-05 14:33:43

Is it just me, or is this resembling a technical Sunday afternoon kick about in the park, albeit a very skillful one !!!

Good refereeing, head injury concussed player – medical team on without fail – any delay is dangerous to the safety of the players

9

RCT at 2014-10-05 14:29:13

Having said that, Martin Atkinson is the master of minimum movement to maximum effect, he always seems to be there or thereabouts

6

RCT at 2014-10-05 14:27:44

Never like to see the referee jumping over the ball or the ball passing between his legs – that must surely put the players off !!!

4

RCT at 2014-10-05 14:24:44

Typical cagey start to the game by both teams – this can help the referee settle into the patterns of the match …

1

RCT at 2014-10-05 14:19:38

Here we go …. good luck to the Ref Team ….

at 2014-10-05 14:16:02

Mike Mullarkey and Steve Child are his Assistant …..

at 2014-10-05 14:13:57

Chris Foy also did well at Villa Park yesterday tea-time, two strong displays by experienced officials, with another man with experience, Martin Atkinson, on duty at Stamford Bridge

at 2014-10-05 14:11:13

Do you have any thoughts on the refereeing so far this weekend ….. In our opinion a solid display from Kevin Friend at Old Trafford this lunchtime

Apparently flares are the issue…. The Ref Cam Team’s experience of officiating abroad is that flares are just part and parcel of the game and the occasion – due you think is just overkill by the authorities ……

at 2014-10-05 14:05:06

Kick off delayed for 15 minutes for ‘health and safety’ issues … not only does this disrupt the routine of the 2 teams, it disrupts the preparation of the Refereeing Team as well

at 2014-10-05 14:02:25

Welcome to our coverage from Stamford Bridge
