Burnley -v West Bromwich Albion

Burnley -v West Bromwich Albion

Commentary By: Trevor Simpson

FINAL SCORE: 2 - 2

TS at 2015-02-08 14:55:05

Good advantage (he was due one!) on half way gives Burnley a corner but it comes to nothing. Added time of 3 minutes shown as Danny Ings awarded man of match. Corner to Burnley but West Brom counter attack. The officials have done their job and my only observation for Mike Dean’s consideration would be the playing of advantage in the mid-field area rather than awarding the ‘easy freekick’. He ‘lost’ an offender on one incident and there is a danger do that and another offence committed by the same player. Easy freekicks negate all that and any threat to control. Other than that, another commanding performance by Mike and his assistants can be delighted with their high level of judgement and teamwork. Stay with us throughout the afternoon for the ‘hat trick’ of games on this Super Sunday. Full time and honours even at Turf Moor.

TS at 2015-02-08 14:47:03

Last few minutes have been pulsating as we approach a corner for West Brom with 3 minutes to go.corner came to nothing but a shot blocked on the line as West Brom nearly score.

TS at 2015-02-08 14:45:05

Attempted block on half way and advantage played before a freekick to West Brom. The blocking offence did not attract the caution as Mike ‘lost’ the offender! Caution for Dawson Yellow Card  For yet another foul. An attempted handling offence by West Brom missed (in the area) as Burnley push for the winner.

TS at 2015-02-08 14:40:44

Extended possession by Burnley taking the game to West Brom as we reach the 80 minute mark. A goal now for either team would surely seal the win and collect the 3 points! Substitute West Brom as Morrison replaces McMannerman.

TS at 2015-02-08 14:35:43

Corner to Burnley raises the crowd noise resulting in Lescott heading the ball off the line. Good effort by Burnley as they press for the winner.

TS at 2015-02-08 14:32:28

Another corner to West Brom as they take the game to Burnley but Lescott’s header is easily saved. Mike Dean has raised his game as the tempo increased but has not over reacted in his work in maintaining control.

TS at 2015-02-08 14:28:52

Brown Ideye involved in everything as he is caught offside. Holding by Burnley but advantage played when the free kick would have been the advantage! Slight error of judgement by Mike Dean there as the ‘advantage’ came to nothing.

TS at 2015-02-08 14:25:59

65 minutes gone and an even contest with. Oth teams looking to get the next goal. Double corner kicks to West Brom and Ideye scores from a header to level the scores. Game on! GOAL!

TS at 2015-02-08 14:23:44

Corner to Burnley as Brunt receives a public admonishment from Referee Dean. Well delivered dialogue showing good communication skills and a firm arm signal to enforce the dialogue. Cool body language and words with Ideye for an offence I front of the Technical area. We’re you taking not Mr Oliver. Ideye cautioned for a handling offence. Correct decision. Yellow Card

TS at 2015-02-08 14:19:50

Assistant Betts gave a good flag of a foul in his area of patrol to show good teamwork and his contribution to control. A half hearted penalty appeal by Burnley was rightly rejected by referee Dean.

TS at 2015-02-08 14:17:56

Good spot of a nudge in the area gives Burnley a free kick inside their own penalty area.

TS at 2015-02-08 14:14:32

Lescott fouled Barnes in retaliation and that should draw a line under the incident. Lescott with another foul, this time on Ings and his frustration will need managing. A public admonishment should have been issued to let the players know the referee is aware.

TS at 2015-02-08 14:11:00

Good judgement by Assistant Betts as the ball ran along the one and did not go out for a throw. Barnes a bit fortunate not to receive a caution for an arm across the face of Lescott.

TS at 2015-02-08 14:08:39

Caution Yacob but why did Mike see if an advantage accrued? Clear caution and play should have been immediately stopped. It all worked out okay in the end! Yellow Card

TS at 2015-02-08 14:06:40

First free kick for Burnley leads to a shot over the bar. Poor effort after the skills of the first half.

TS at 2015-02-08 14:04:20

Second half under way. What changes will the managers have made to their tactical formations? Adjustments to the referee’s positioning might be necessary as he watches to see what changes have been made by the managers. Remember that the tactical formations of the teams (4-4-2, 4-3-3 or even 5-3-2-1) have different positional requirements for the referee to get the best viewing angles without being in the way of play. Marney off for Burnley and Baird off for West Brom.

TS at 2015-02-08 13:50:42

Half time at Turf Moor with the game evenly balanced as referee Dean blows the whistle. The officials can be delighted with their first half performance as their accurate decision making and involvement in the game was all that was expected. Join us for the second half which should be interesting as West Brom need the next goal to get back into the game. Half Time

TS at 2015-02-08 13:47:31

Corner West Brom Added time at the end of the first half and it needs extra vigilance to see the half to a safe conclusion.. Goal West Brom by Brunt from the corner.GOAL! Pulis delighted and game on now for the second half!

TS at 2015-02-08 13:41:37

Dawson kicked the ball away to delay the restart with a quiet word given by the referee. Marney is back to try and ‘run off’ his knock on the leg. The Burnley game is based on work rate and effort to frustrate the opposition and it is working perfectly today as we approach the last 5 minutes of the half. Caution for Baird of West Brom for a blocking offence rightly issued. Yellow Card

TS at 2015-02-08 13:37:06

The third goal in any game is crucial and the difference between three nil and two one is massive. The officials will motivate each other for the final ten minutes of the half to maintain concentration and ensure their decision making remains credible. Marney is injured and has rolled off the field for treatment.

TS at 2015-02-08 13:34:11

2nd goal for Burnley by Danny Ings from Boyd’s cross. Well deserved goal GOAL!

TS at 2015-02-08 13:29:51

Burnley are competing for every ball as they look to take the share of possession back from West Brom. Offside by Assistant Betts again looked credible. Mike Dean showing good empathy as Marney down injured as freezing fog blows across the ground – could that become a problem later?

TS at 2015-02-08 13:25:23

West Brom have taken the game to Burnley since the substitution. Substitutions for injured players do not normally sound alarm bells for the referee to raise their game, unlike tactical changes which can cause a temporary threat to control. The player entering the field of play, in Law, must not enter until his team mate has left and a good ploy for officials is to slow down the change over when the tempo has increased.

TS at 2015-02-08 13:22:18

Late tackle gives West Brom a freekick in a good position as grappling begins! Header over the bar from a good delivery by Fletcher. Mike Dean could have been more pro-active there and defined his tolerance level more clearly!

TS at 2015-02-08 13:19:40

Substitution for West Brom pending as Anichebe replaced by Berahino and this has lifted Albion with immediate possession.

TS at 2015-02-08 13:17:17

Free kick to West Brom as goalscorerer Barnes careless tackle penalised correctly by Mike Dean.

TS at 2015-02-08 13:15:06

Burnley have had twice the possession of Albion as they frustrated the visitors ability to create. Manager Pulis looks bemused and need to sort out the tactical problem of lack of possession.

TS at 2015-02-08 13:12:15

The Burnley work rate in closing down West Brom is lovely to see but it could cause some frustration by the Albion players with their ability to crest. Burnley score on 11 minutes with a header by Barnes GOAL!

TS at 2015-02-08 13:09:24

Offside awarded by Assistant Burt for coming back looked credible before Foster saved superbly well tipping the ball onto the cross bar. It is all Burnley so far.

TS at 2015-02-08 13:07:01

First 5 minutes have been all Burnley and referee Dean and his team have maintained a low-profile. First foul for high feet awarded to Burnley on the half way line.

TS at 2015-02-08 13:03:42

First chance to Burnley on 2 minutes but Ings fired well over the bar.

TS at 2015-02-08 13:02:24

Burnley kick off with referee Dean closer to the half way line than many others would have positioned themselves. Well done Mike as the deeper position is flawed in my opinion.

The whistle blows and we’re underway. Please let us have your thoughts on You-Are-The-Ref.com throughout the game.

TS at 2015-02-08 12:58:37

Speculation that Darren Fletcher as the new West Brom captain might be the difference today. Lots of smiles and handshakes between the two teams in the tunnel. The entry into the field of play is at the corner flag – how many other Premier League tunnels are situated in the corner besides Crystal Palace and Manchester United? Answer – Stoke City.

TS at 2015-02-08 12:55:24

The teams are in the tunnel ready to enter the field of play for the game.

TS at 2015-02-08 12:47:13

Fourth Official Michael Oliver can learn a great deal from watching Mike Dean today. He is a great young referee prospect who does seem to lacks worldliness – something that Mike Dean has in abundance. Michael is also well known to me, having been a part of my Dallas Cup coaching group in the years before he was promoted to the Football League and later the Select Group list of Premiership Referees. He needs to become a much better communicator and display a more open personality. He can practice these required skills as 4th Official and he should be using any recently learned techniques for the management of the contrasting characters who are today’s managers in the technical area. The fact that there is a great distance between the Technical Areas at Burnley should be an asset in his favour.

TS at 2015-02-08 12:42:59

Referee Dean is a meticulous planner and will have very clearly defined his game plan to his team in preparation for this encounter. Mike was one of our most respected FIFA referees until his enforced retirement on age grounds. His international experience will hopefully help him today as he hopes to progress within the Premier League and enhance his considerable reputation. He will be very aware that he needs to maintain his focus on all his domestic games and to perform consistently well throughout the current season and into the next. His ability to communicate is one of his greatest strengths and his body language is second to none. Match that with the consistent level of his decision making and his lost to FIFA is a loss to the game at International level.

TS at 2015-02-08 12:39:51

Good afternoon and welcome to You Are The Ref which features the first of three games today, with this potentially exciting clash between two teams, in need of the points, who have under performed so far this season and are currently in the ‘danger’ zone before today’s game. Let us hope Mike Dean displays the same skills today as he has over the past few months as he’s established himself as one of the ‘safe pair of hands’ of the referees on the Premier League. Burnley go into the game after a good spell in terms of performance but three points today will take them further up the table to consolidate a ‘safe position’ above the drop zone. Similarly for West Bromwich Albion and the old adage of a ‘six-pointer’ was never more true. It has all the makings of a very close and competitive game.
