From a Referees point of view this was a game of two halves. In the first half Mike Jones was able to assert authority applying the Laws in a credible manner with authority being asserted sensibly with four cautions. Dissent was dealt with efficiently and offences were relatively few. However,  failure to caution Watford No29 early in the second half and instead use the “quiet word” did nothing to aid control and the caution of Watford No10 then had little effect  and hence the game became littered with numerous minor offences as Watford players became frustrated. This then culminated in the offence committed by Watford No37 in the 75th minute which should have been a second yellow card and hence a dismissal. I feel the Referee allowed his judgement to be clouded by the players’ earlier yellow card but that should never be the case. If a yellow card is warranted then this should be given irrespective of what had gone before. Had this action  been taken rather than the “quiet word” approach, authority would have actually been enhanced and  quite possibly silly minor offences cut-out. Such a shame that the game was allowed to develop the way it did after the groundwork had been done in the first half. A good learning curve… a low key approach is not always the best option and does nothing for the overall standard of performance or level of control.

Burnley 2 Watford 0.Full Time

SM at 2016-09-26 21:49:16

Free kick to Watford and the Watford player lets the Referee know that he thought the Burnley player should have been cautioned., which indicated frustration.

SM at 2016-09-26 21:39:55

Very disappointing Bik M’path. You are quite right. Just apply the Laws and do not take anything previous into consideration.

Watford players are clearly frustrated and hence now we are seeing a number of careless challenges. Mike needs to keep a lid on it.

SM at 2016-09-26 21:36:23

Another offence committed by Watford No37 who has already been cautioned. Did this influence the Referee in not showing a second yellow card and hence would have had to dismiss the Watford player?

Another easy decision for the Referee to award Watford a free kick following an illegal challenge by Burnley 21.

sm at 2016-09-26 21:24:51

Another clear foul detected the Referee. Correctly awards free kick to Watford and “quiet word” to No8. A good sprint by the Referee to keep close to play. Then correctly issues a caution for Watford No10 for illegal challenge on Burnley No23. Yellow Card

sm at 2016-09-26 21:19:53

Clear foul by Watford No5. Referee in close proximity to award.

Another Watford foul. Easy decision for Referee although Watford player not happy.

A good flag for offside offence by Assistant.

sm at 2016-09-26 21:16:01

Easy decision to award Burnley a free kick following clear push in back. Referee has positioned himself to get a clear view.

Watford 29 a little fortunate to escape a caution following a foul on opponent who was breaking clear.  That was a good opportunity to really re assert authority missed.

10 minutes into second half and Referee uses management skills to ensure Watford players do not “lose their heads”. We’ll see if that was the correct skill to use.

sm at 2016-09-26 21:09:15

We’ll see if the tempo increases and if so how the Referee’s fitness stands up to it. Right away Mike Jones has had to inject an appreciable acceleration to deal with a Burnley counter attack. He’s on the spot when Burnley score a second goal GOAL! to make it 2-0

sm at 2016-09-26 21:06:23

Early minor assertion of authority ensuring throw was taken from correct position. Any opportunity to make an early statement of control is always a positive move.

sm at 2016-09-26 21:03:45

Bik M’path… Good to have your thoughts. As I said the Referee would have been served with a sideways move to get a better view rather than trying to “look round” players. Good learning point.

The home team have showed plenty of energy and put the visitors under pressure. This led to the caution of Watford No37 and 25 (not 22 as I thought). Following the Burnley goal the visitors had plenty of possession and a blatant block by Burnley No2 was rightly penalised with a caution. From a Referees point of view the first half has been reasonably straightforward to control. Offences have been few and the cautionable offences have been dealt with correctly. The Referee has read the pattern of play fairly well and been able to conserve energy while always being well positioned. When the goal was scored the Referee could have been a little wider instead of having to “look round” players in the crowded penalty area. However, overall Mike Jones has controlled the game well. Hopefully more of the same from him in the second half.

Yellow CardCaution for Burnley 2 following deliberate block on Watford attacker.

Half Time

SM at 2016-09-26 20:40:43

The caution was for the foul tackle I’m sure. The card was coming out immediately before the tackle was made and before the Watford player had a chance to show dissent. Obviously the player was not pleased

Caution for Watford 22 following interaction with Assistant. Yellow CardCan only assume this one was for some dissent.

GOAL! Burnley following corner kick.

See how the Referee drifts towards his assistant when play developes down the right wing position.

Easy decision for freekick following clear push in back.

SM at 2016-09-26 20:29:40

I think the Referee decided who had played the ball with the head and the assistant just confirmed the ball had gone out of play Bik M’path

Note the Referees position so he gets a clear view of goalmouth action.

First corner for Watford.  N

Yellow Card

Silly challenge by Watford 37. Justifiable caution for the Watford player.Yellow Card. Yellow CardYellow Card

sm at 2016-09-26 20:12:59

Look how the Referee adjusts his movement and position to suit the pattern of play and keep him near to it.  Another correct judgement that Hendrick had not been fouled and hence play allowed to continue. Notice how close the Referee was to the challenge.

sm at 2016-09-26 20:10:27

Referee well positioned to judge challenge on Burnley 9 was not the award of a penalty kick. Good decision.

sm at 2016-09-26 20:08:01

Good awareness and hence spot of hand ball offence.

sm at 2016-09-26 20:06:44

Late tackle by Watford player. Referee well positioned to give free-kick and have quiet word with offender. Could have been a caution but let’s see if the “quiet word” works.

SM at 2016-09-26 19:29:33

Referee Mike Jones has been on the select list since 2008 hence is a very experienced Referee. It seems, however, that for whatever reason he doesn’t get the same amount of fixtures that other colleagues have. I wonder why? Could it be that he has upset someone at the PGMOL?
