A good afternoons work from the Match officials, Chris Foy and his team judged their involvement level, well. Firm match control with a consistent application of Law 12 regarding reckless challenges being applied, backed up with a good threshold of what was and was not careless contact. Consequently there was little questioning of player challenges. The talking points will be the two penalty decisions, the first on Ashley Young was a difficult call for Chris Foy as the contact that took place was on his blind side and too far away from the active Assistant. Although he may be surprised when he see’s the push that took place. I would not have been surprised if a penalty was awarded, having said that from his angle he could have done no different. The second decision the handball by Barnes is equally contentious, I thought the player was close to the ball and could not have reacted any differently although he clearly makes contact with the ball with his arm and his arms were extended, its a case of was it instinctive or was it a deliberate act to close the ball down, i though Chris Foy called it right. However the quoted comments by BT Sport from PGMOL that the ball hit the players body first is interesting, i’ve not heard that strand of opinion before Other than those talking points Chris Foy and his team worked well together had delivered a sound end product What are your thoughts? RH at 2014-08-30 14:33:20

RH at 2014-08-30 14:33:01
steven Reid rightly cautioned for a cynical challenge on Danny Welbeck
RH at 2014-08-30 14:31:15
A claim for handball against Burnley player Ashley Barnes in the penalty area, not for me! the payer was close to ball and could not have reacted differently, good call!
RH at 2014-08-30 14:26:30
As United appear to be finishing strongly Assistant Mick McDonough may have the balance of play to contend with, focus and concentration are vital
RH at 2014-08-30 14:23:36
Will the introduction of Danny Welbeck change the pattern of play? something i’m sure Chris Foy will be aware of
RH at 2014-08-30 14:21:59
United are looking more dangerous as they get the ball wide and play it it, this will affect nearside Assistant Mick McDonough who could become more involved in judging player challenges as Burnley seek to close United down
RH at 2014-08-30 14:19:11
sound yellow card for Dean Marney , control being rightfully maintained!
RH at 2014-08-30 14:16:41
The spray is out for the second time!
RH at 2014-08-30 14:16:13
The players will have gained confidence from the Referees interpretation of Law 12 contact challenges so far, his threshold on acceptable contact and issuing of two cautions has been consistent
RH at 2014-08-30 14:13:15
Good co-operation between Chris Foy and Mike Mullarkey on that last caution, Mike offering sound input as he was closer to the incident
RH at 2014-08-30 14:11:50
A correct caution as Tyler Blacketts trailing leg is correctly deemed reckless on Danny Ings, good back up support by the active Assistant Mike Mullarkey
RH at 2014-08-30 14:07:31
The Referee takes an opportunity for a drink as Di Maria receives treatment for cramp
RH at 2014-08-30 14:06:15
The Referees game plan has not needed to change so far as the second half is being played in a similar tempo and fashion to the first half
RH at 2014-08-30 14:03:27
There appears to be real ‘cup tie’ atmosphere in the ground, concentration as always is so important to retain focus!
RH at 2014-08-30 14:01:50
The Referee worked hard with a strong sprint across mid field to obtain good viewing angles on that last United attack
RH at 2014-08-30 14:00:30
The Referee moved position as the last corner was played in to be well placed to award a goal kick to United
RH at 2014-08-30 13:58:07
Burnley have a more direct attacking style so Chris Foy can sweep in behind play, where as United build more slowly and the Referee has to take care that he does not get caught up and in the way of players
RH at 2014-08-30 13:55:59
As with the first half play is presently well balanced between both Assistants which from their concentration perspective is ideal
RH at 2014-08-30 13:54:34
Di Maria on the receiving end of a robust challenge there!
RH at 2014-08-30 13:53:50
Mike Mullarkey moving well to the goal line to signal that corner to Burnley
RH at 2014-08-30 13:51:04
Chris Foy picking up that late mid field challenge on Di Maria
RH at 2014-08-30 13:47:18
The Referee starts the second half
RH at 2014-08-30 13:42:58
A good first half for the match officials, they’ve judged their involvement level well. Just a couple of points to note, the first being a well manged advantage and follow up caution for Fletcher as Danny Ings was held back in midfield. The other being Chris Foy’s refusal to award a penalty following a push on Ashley Young. Replays suggest that there was sufficient contact for a penalty, but in fairness to the Referee he was on the blind side of the push. Other than that a good solid half for Chris Foy and his team
RH at 2014-08-30 13:31:25
The Referees whistle ends the first half
RH at 2014-08-30 13:30:39
One minute added time
RH at 2014-08-30 13:30:20
The Referee was close to play to view that challenge on Ashley Young in the penalty area, obviously not impressed with the fall to ground!
RH at 2014-08-30 13:27:18
Mike Mullarkey demonstrating superb movement and technique in this first half to underline why he is at the top of his profession
RH at 2014-08-30 13:25:30
Important that the Match officials maintain focus in these closing first half minutes to complete a satisfying first half
RH at 2014-08-30 13:23:22
He more than makes amends with a great advantage as Danny Ings was clearly held back! and follows up with a good caution, great stuff!
RH at 2014-08-30 13:21:25
Did Chris Foy have a view of that late challenge on Lukas Jutiewicz? he played advantage but was looking very much over his shoulder
RH at 2014-08-30 13:19:08
AS Burnley come back into the game play is becoming evenly balanced between the two Assistants
RH at 2014-08-30 13:17:42
A good first half hour from the Match Officials, they’ve just their involvement level well so far!

A great position by Chris Foy to spot that offence on Jason Shacknell
RH at 2014-08-30 13:14:26
The Referee is establishing a good workable threshold in awarding free kicks for careless challenges
RH at 2014-08-30 13:13:18
The nearside Assistant coming very much into the game as Burnley mount a couple of attacks
RH at 2014-08-30 13:08:50
Good support by the Assistant at the award of that free kick against Van Persie
RH at 2014-08-30 13:05:38
Chris Foy is choosing to follow break away attacks by arriving in the final third of the field of play in the left hand channel, offering him good viewing angles
RH at 2014-08-30 13:01:46
Good position there from the Referee to award that goal kick to Burnley
RH at 2014-08-30 12:58:55
Good advantage in midfield from Chris Foy on that last United attack
RH at 2014-08-30 12:57:48
The game has settled down from those fractious opening moments, with more shape to play the Referee spatrol path is now more settled
RH at 2014-08-30 12:54:20
The shaded area on the far side of the field of play will require additional focus by both Assistants
RH at 2014-08-30 12:53:05
Chris Foy is astutely keeping play between him and his active Assistant
RH at 2014-08-30 12:51:09
A noisy opening here with the home crowd encouraged with their team’s start, concentration is the key here!
RH at 2014-08-30 12:47:59
It’s time for the spray, for the first time today!
RH at 2014-08-30 12:46:22
A noisy crowd and warm summer conditions will require much concentration, both Assistants will want to ‘get their eye in early’ and focus on distances and viewing range – the biggest call of the game may happen in the opening minutes!
