In my opinion, Kevin Friend and his team have had an excellent game:

  • This was an object lesson in ‘tempo management’ by Friend. His involvement for the first ¾ of the game was minimal, keeping a ‘watching brief’ on proceedings with accurate decision making and good positioning and movement.

  • 5 cautions may appear on the high side, but all were totally justified as the referee increased his involvement, correctly so, in the final ¼. Each caution was correct and expected.

  • An honorable mention to Darren Cann who showed his experience with a ‘text-book’ display of commendable Assistant Refereeing.

  • There are not many times in a game at this level where I have no development points for the match officials, but this was the case today – well done to the Refereeing team.

Summary to follow shortly ......

90

AH at 2017-02-12 16:20:09

4 additional minutes are indicated by Bobby Madley - it would be harsh on either team to lose the game from this position.

88

AH at 2017-02-12 16:18:31

Yellow CardYellow CardJoey Barton 'welcomes' Batshuayi to proceedings and receives a caution, Fabregas also commits a cycnical offence and becomes the 5th player in Kevin Friend's book - all totally justified in my opinion.

87

AH at 2017-02-12 16:15:27

3 minutes to go and it's great to see both teams going for all 3 points .....

84

at 2017-02-12 16:13:39

Kante's challenge on Barton is fair one and the referee correctly allows play to continue, not that Mr. Barton saw it that way .....

80

AH at 2017-02-12 16:12:02

#BURCHE 10 minutes to go - 10 minutes for the refereeing team to maintain their very high standard and to bring the game to a safe and successful conclusion.

75

AH at 2017-02-12 16:07:51

Yellow CardYellow CardDavid Luiz and Matthew Lowton are both correctly issued with yellow cards as the game increases it's intensity. The referee has increased his profile by taking into account the 'temperature' of the game - commendable Mr. Friend

71

AH at 2017-02-12 16:04:15

Once again, Darren Cann shows his experience by not raising his flag, even though Arfield was clearly in an offside position.  The ball was in Courtois's hands, no need to raise the flag as no offence had been committed, OK, 'bread and butter' to someone of Darren's experience, but nevertheless, a great example to up and coming Assistant Referees.

69

AH at 2017-02-12 15:59:14

Yellow CardWestwood 'takes one for the team' to prevent Chelsea developing a promising attack and is correctly cautioned.  One of my coaching mantras is to "give what is expected", at whatever level you officiate at, and, in that situation, Westwood expected to receive a caution and accepted his card with good grace.

67

AH at 2017-02-12 15:55:33

#BURCHE David Luiz welcomes Arfield into the game with a robust challenge on then offers a hand of apology to the Burnley front man, that sums up the spirit in which the game has been played, up to now that is .....

#BURCHE 15 minutes into the second half and Kevin Friend continues to retain control with commendable, low-profile refereeing.  No fuss, no controversy, just no nonsense, accurate decision making and good player management.

51

AH at 2017-02-12 15:41:54

Kevin Friend yet again ideally placed to, on this occasion, judge a penal offence by Lowton. A word of praise to Assistant Darren Cann who, although he was close to play, did not indicate the offence as there was no need to do so.  The art of Assistant Refereeing is knowing when not to flag.

47

AH at 2017-02-12 15:36:32

David Luiz slips and Courtois saves from Gray - a significant momnet in the game perhaps ?

46

AH at 2017-02-12 15:34:02

Here we go for the 2nd half - Kevin and his team will be hoping that the second 45 goes as well as the first 45 ....

Half Time

Half Time

#BURCHE Great to be summarising the first-half without having to be critical, in any way, of the match officials. I know that the players are assisting them with this and remaining disciplined, but nevertheless, Kevin Friend as his team have shone so far.  Let;s hope my words are not the curse of the commentator .........

Half Time

#BURCHE Half-time is what has been, so far, a highly entertaining game.  Let's not underestimate the role the Match Officials can play in this as the players are trusting them to make the correct decisions, and they are not letting them down.

43

AH at 2017-02-12 15:17:10

That was a strong challenge by Azpilicueta against Barnes, perhaps a legacy of the penal offence committed by the latter earlier in the game. "One each lads, keep your discipline!"

37

AH at 2017-02-12 15:11:39

#BURCHE Joey Barton and Diego Costa - now there's a potentially 'interesting' confrontation .......

35

AH at 2017-02-12 15:10:07

10 minutes until half-time in this very enjoyable and entertaining game.

32

AH at 2017-02-12 15:07:02

Once again, commendable refereeing by Kevin Friend, delaying the free-kick award to see if an advantage accrued, and then issuing a well timed and meaningful rebuke to the offender, Ben Mee.

26

AH at 2017-02-12 15:00:50

The first real test for Kevin Friend as Barnes 'raises his arms in the process of jumping' in a challenge with Azpilicueta, or did he?  In my opinion, the right call from the referee, a caution would have been harsh, a public rebuke was the correct course of action.

24

AH at 2017-02-12 14:57:06

GOAL! From the resulting free-kick, Robbie Brady shows commendable skill and accuracy to bend a belting free-kick into the top corner. Game on !

22

AH at 2017-02-12 14:54:39

A quarter of the way through the game and, so far, so good for the referee team at Turf Moor, The referee is once again well placed to judge a penal offence committed by Matic.

20

AH at 2017-02-12 14:49:53

Great to see Kevin Friend looking relaxed and in control in the opening phases of the game.  OK, so to the untrained eye, he has had very little to do, but he looks confident and in charge, which is great to see!

14

AH at 2017-02-12 14:46:04

#BURCHE little surprise that Mr Joseph Barton is amongst the thick of the action.

12

AH at 2017-02-12 14:43:29

Two good applications of the advantage clause and a well-timed 'public rebuke' for Lowton allows the referee to get into the game - it had all been very quiet up to that point.

7

AH at 2017-02-12 14:39:05

GOAL! Pedro finishes of a typical Chelsea sweeping move to open the scoring - already it's looking ominous for the Home Team

5

AH at 2017-02-12 14:37:27

#BURCHE Just wondering what David Luiz, Alonso, Pedro and Diego Costa make of this Lancashire weather !

Kevin Friend is in charge for this game, supported by Darren Cann and Mark Scholes, Bobby Madley has the 4th official duties.  It’s interesting to note that Kevin has had no red cards in the Premier League this season, let’s see if that continues today.

Pre-Match

#BURCHE It was also interesting to hear that Mark Clattenburg had offered a half-time ‘apology’ to Hull City following Alexis Sanchez’s opening goal; opinion is divided on the validity, or otherwise, of the goal, please let us know your thoughts by tweeting us here @youaretheref

Pre Match

AH at 2017-02-12 14:21:21

#BURCHE An indifferent weekend so far for the Premiership referees.  West Ham manager Slaven Bilic did not hold back on his thoughts regarding Michael Oliver’s performance and may feel the wrath of the FA’s disciplinary panel for his public criticism.

Pre Match

AH at 2017-02-12 14:17:47

Champions in waiting Chelsea are today’s visitors, surely they have one hand on the trophy already and 3 points this afternoon would see them open up a massive 12-point gap between themselves and London rivals Spurs and Arsenal.  The unlikely scenario of a Home Team victory would see Burnley jump up to 10th in the table.

Welcome to our coverage of Burnley v Chelsea from Turf Moor, one of the traditional football grounds in operation on the Premier League.  As an active match official I used to really enjoy being appointed to Burnley home games, the atmosphere is always special, and the good citizens of Lancashire don’t hold back on their opinions, especially if they find out that you are a Yorkshireman !
