Sumary

This was a harder game than Arsenal may have expected after taking the early lead. Burnley acquitted themselves well throughout and particularly in the second half but with scoring opportunities at a premium they were unable to snatch a vital equalising goal. From an officiating point of view Mike Dean created a god balance in allowing the game to breath without putting control at risk in any way. His two first half yellow cards enabled him to assert authority in a very “low key” manner and his good reading of the patterns of play allowed him to conserve energy so that when the quick end to end phases of play occurred he was able to inject an appreciable acceleration so that he was always in close proximity when a judgement had to be made. On the odd occasion that his view was obstructed very good teamwork by his Assistants ensured offences did not go undetected. Overall it is pleasing to say we had quite an entertaining game which was helped in no small manner by a very competent team of Officials. Well done boys. Keep up the good work when the tougher games are encountered. Join us tomorrow for our coverage of the Sunday game on You-are-the-ref.

SM at 2015-04-11 19:15:08

A chance for Arsenal following a rare Burnley attack. The quick break only produced a corner kick which was cleared only to come straight back. This is testing Mike Dean’s fitness but he is coping very well. Sanchez commits careless minor offence to give Burnley some breathing space.

SM at 2015-04-11 19:08:54

Arsenal substitute. Welbeck for Giroud. 4th Official ensures digital board can be clearly seen.

SM at 2015-04-11 19:07:48

Good judgement by Assistant Burt when two players tangled and no offence committed. Play goes on and the Referee applies a god advantage with a clear arm signal.

SM at 2015-04-11 19:04:31

Another Arsenal corner kick. Again little holding or pulling which is encouraging.

SM at 2015-04-11 19:02:14

At last Burnley fashion a chance but can’t make it count. It’s imperative that they make the most of the limited opportunities that come their way. But they are still only one goal down.

SM at 2015-04-11 18:56:43

One of the features of Mike Dean’s performance is his close proximity to challenges. This gives a high degree of credibility to all of his decisions. Another good learning point…. close proximity gives added credibility.

SM at 2015-04-11 18:52:50

Another good offside judgement by Assistant Burt. Flag clearly indicates where the offence took place.

SM at 2015-04-11 18:51:58

Corner kick to Arsenal. Immediate clear hand siganal by the Referee.

SM at 2015-04-11 18:50:32

Hand ball by Duff?  Not in the opinion of the Referee. And I think he was spot on !

SM at 2015-04-11 18:48:14

Mike Dean always looks completely at ease in his movement about the pitch. He is not afraid to walk when necessary but can introduce a reasonable acceleration to ensure he remains near to play when the pace picks up.  A god learning point… you don’t have to run around like a headless chicken if you cultivate a good reading of the patterns of play.

SM at 2015-04-11 18:43:51

Foul by Giroud. Referee waited to see if any advantage would accrue but when none did the free-kick was awarded to Burnley. Good Refereeing.

SM at 2015-04-11 18:42:25

Corner kick for Arsenal. Not any real noticeable holding in the goal area which is good. Players seem more intent on challenging for the ball rather than holding/pulling opponents. Could that be down to the Referee and how the players perceive his judgements?

Corner kick to Burnley as they try to put the visitors under pressure. Good attempt but easy save for goalkeeper. Careless foul by Sanchez gives Burnley  free-kick but offside offence spotted by Assistant Burt.

SM at 2015-04-11 18:34:51

Arfield foul on Carzola. Free-kick Arsenal.

SM at 2015-04-11 18:33:14

Here we go as Mike Dean gets the second half under way. Burnley have an immediate attack which comes to nothing.

SM at 2015-04-11 18:22:16

Summary.

The early goal allowed the visitors to produce open attacking football which was helped in no small way by the numerous careless fouls committed by the home team and their penchant for giving the ball away easily. However, the home team have stuck to their task and at only one goal down are still in the game. The two cautions for central defenders may have some impact on the second half but we look forward to more open play throughout the second half. We will be back again for the second half after a quick cuppa. see you shortly.

Half Time

Mike Dean brings the first half to a close.

SM at 2015-04-11 18:16:41

Barnes careless tackle on Bellerin. Free-kick awarded to Arsenal.. Trippier blocks Sanchez and hence free-kick to Arsenal. The Burnley player simply beaten by a skillful turn by his opponent.

SM at 2015-04-11 18:12:50

Throw position advice given by Assistant Long. Much better to be proactive to prevent a foul throw from wrong spot.

SM at 2015-04-11 18:09:58

A hard tackle by Jones on Ozil. Perfectly fair although the Arsenal player was not impressed. Good judgement by the Referee.

SM at 2015-04-11 18:07:49

Barnes leads with his arm into Giroud and hence the Referee awards Arsenal a free-kick. Arsenal are having plenty of possession and drawing careless fouls from their opponents in trying to close them down quickly. The Referee is aware of this and ios keeping a watchful eye on all challenges.

SM at 2015-04-11 18:04:31

A silly trip on Giroud gives Arsenal another free-kick. Mike Dean well positioned to detect the foul.

SM at 2015-04-11 18:03:06

Assistant Long gives an immediate flag indication of a foul on Monreal. Good Referee/Assistant co-operation in evidence as the Assistant had the clearer view of the incident.

SM at 2015-04-11 18:00:54

Although Mike Dean is allowing as much open play as possible he is maintaining control with sensible use of the yellow card when players are not responding. The second caution illustrates that he will not allow dissent to undermine his level of authority.

SM at 2015-04-11 17:57:29

Free-kick to Burnley following a minor offence.  Ball controlled by the arm by Arsenal player so correct award of free-kick to Burnley. Good control by Mike Dean in trying to allow the game to breath but finally has to award Burnley a free-kick  Yellow CardCaution for Mee for holding back his opponent.

Yellow CardCaution for Duff following dissent after being penalised for handball.

Free kick to Arsenal which Cazorla puts just wide.

SM at 2015-04-11 17:51:32

Assistant Burt has to take evasive action to prevent being in the way. He did wel to keep his feet while maintaining a view of the action.

SM at 2015-04-11 17:49:29

Hand ball by Monreal not given as the distance the ball travelled before hitting his hand was very small. Sensible refereeing.

SM at 2015-04-11 17:47:36

Mike Dean right on the spot to award a free-kick to Burnley on the edge of the penalty area.  Advantage played as Arsenal break quickly but Burt signals for an offside decision

SM at 2015-04-11 17:45:43

Was Giroud guilty of using an illegal arm on Duff that went unpunished ?

SM at 2015-04-11 17:43:55

Cazorla impeded and offence well spotted and penalised by the Referee.

SM at 2015-04-11 17:42:30

Arsenal get the first goal after two opportunities were wasted.GOAL! Ramsey pounces on a lose ball and fires into the net.

SM at 2015-04-11 17:40:54

Good offside decision by Assistant Long, judging a very close situation.

SM at 2015-04-11 17:40:03

Assistant Long also gives a positive flag signal to indicate ball out of play. Both Assistants showing immediate concentration which bodes well for the rest of the game.

SM at 2015-04-11 17:38:16

Arsenal already showing positive attacking intentions as Burnley give the ball away.  However, Burnley make a quick counter-attack which the Referee copes with very well to inject pace to keep reasonably near to play.

SM at 2015-04-11 17:35:27

Assistant Burt in early action with a positive signal for ball out of play.

sm at 2015-04-11 17:33:14

The first free-kick when Trippier holds Sanchez to prevent him breaking away. Could be a very early yellow card but Mike Dean suffices with a free-kick to Arsenal.

sm at 2015-04-11 17:31:43

The sun is shining at Turf Moor as the teams enter the field of play. Burnley keep the same team for the fourth consecutive game while Arsenal keep the same team as in their last match.
