Full time Summary RCT at 2017-11-20 23:22:51
My full time summary would be as follows: At half time we had plenty to discuss and talk about and whilst we want to be positive YATR is all about education and the web site is here to help and develop referees. This was a refereeing performance that I felt was below the standard required at this top level of our game. Why? well Let us get straight to the big key match decisions. Brighton should been awarded a clear penalty kick in the 38th minute. Why not given? from an education point of view and that is what YATR is all about then Lee Mason was someway behind play and not in the best position to judge this key match decision. Having arrived at the scene of the incident he was not prepared for the big decision that awaited him and Adrian Holmes his Assistant nearside, who in my opinion had a better side view did not assist in this situation, when he could have intervened. A penalty kick was not awarded and to compound matters with ball still in play Lee awarded a ck which was then changed to a gk to Stoke? That was the last thing Brighton wanted to know when they were expecting Adrian Holmes to tell Lee Mason it should be a penalty kick. Murray then with feelings running high commits a reckless tackle which endangers the safety of an opponent, he then to his own relief is only shown the yellow card and the expected red card does not appear from Lee Mason`s top pocket. Again, the Assistant Adrian Holmes could have assisted Lee here. Plenty for all officials to reflect upon. My feeling is that Lee has worked and given his best refereeing performance tonight. We have discussed areas of improvement that are required to be seen, but in fairness to Lee he was appointed to this game as the best referee available to referee this game tonight and I leave it up to others to discuss the merits of this refereeing appointment. The key areas tonight to reflect upon from a referee perspective are Positioning, movement, creating the best viewing angles and judgement. Matthew Wilkes supported Lee well with good offside judgement including the Stoke opening goal. Please keep your views coming on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com

90+3 RCT at 2017-11-20 22:52:11
Full Time 2-2 My summary is to follow:

90+2 RCT at 2017-11-20 22:51:18
Stoke throw in awarded by Holmes as they look to absorb time.

3 minutes of additional time are shown by Kevin Friend RCT at 2017-11-20 22:49:16

89 RCT at 2017-11-20 22:48:40
March and Diouf are spoken to at length by Lee Mason as he looks to assert his authority on the game.

87 RCT at 2017-11-20 22:47:31
Fk to Stoke correctly awarded although there could have a fk awarded to Stoke just prior to this one being awarded. Again, it is down to the referees view and position / angle.

86 RCT at 2017-11-20 22:45:45
Fk to Stoke correctly awarded. As a referee it is good to give and go and get to your next position AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.

85 RCT at 2017-11-20 22:44:16
Lee Mason is again some way from play as it develops and he gets caught up in play as Brighton look to regain momentum.

82 RCT at 2017-11-20 22:42:19
My feeling is that Stoke will now be desperate to hold on for a point at this stage in the game. Key now for all officials to keep focus, concentration, alertness and awareness to the very end.

81 RCT at 2017-11-20 22:40:51
Foul by Dunk on Diouf – good assistance with a flag signal from Holmes nearside touchline

79 RCT at 2017-11-20 22:39:42
Good hold down of the flag for a no offside situation from Wilkes as the ball travels out of play for a gk to Stoke.

77 RCT at 2017-11-20 22:37:11
Ck to Stoke as players move into the penalty awareness is key at these situations and also as a referee to be aware of players / movement.

75 RCT at 2017-11-20 22:34:53
Murray on the receiving end of a foul from Crouch as Lee Mason awards a fk.

74 RCT at 2017-11-20 22:33:29
Lee Grant removes some mud from his boots prior to taking a goal kick as he looks to absorb as much time as he possibly can and get away with.

72 RCT at 2017-11-20 22:32:00
Things have settled somewhat and the players are getting on with game. It will only take a goal and or a key decision to up the tempo again. Thoughts as a referee and assistant to be mindful of as the game progresses.

68 RCT at 2017-11-20 22:29:51
Bruno long throw in will see a quick glance from Wilkes at the feet and Mason will take the arms. Worth including in your pre match instructions. YATR Academy – Take a look for this and more and join to get the best education from a top organisation.

67 RCT at 2017-11-20 22:26:46
This game is very evenly poised at 2-2 with both teams sensing a win. Concentration and focus all round from our Match Officials is a must, because there is plenty in this game to go.

65 RCT at 2017-11-20 22:25:02
Shawcross is offside and signalled by Adrian Holmes.

62 RCT at 2017-11-20 22:23:30
The biggest issue as we have discussed so far is our referees position and movement. In that last Brighton attack then he is directly square behind play and not in any way in the best positions to judge key match decisions? little angle to get the best viewing position. Easy I know to sit and be critical but we are viewing a top game around the world and surely we should be viewing a top referee? Please keep your views coming on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com

58 RCT at 2017-11-20 22:19:20
Stoke fk then sees Brighton breakaway and well would you believe it GOAL! to make it 2-2 tight non offside call from Wilkes but replay confirms correct. Matthew Wilkes also in a good position to judge.

57 RCT at 2017-11-20 22:17:04
Murray correctly signalled offside by Wilkes and this fact is communicated by Lee Mason.

55 RCT at 2017-11-20 22:14:57
Advantage to Brighton is played by Lee as Murray then commits a further foul putting him close now to further action which should have been taken in the first half with a straight red card as we discussed.

53 RCT at 2017-11-20 22:13:15
Lee Grant the Stoke gk is verging on a yellow card if not prevented by Lee Mason. Lee has to up his game management because as this half builds so will the frustrations develop unless proactive management is seen and taken.

52 RCT at 2017-11-20 22:11:26
Ck to Brighton – again Lee Mason is so very static and unable to get out of the way or moving as play breaks away

49 RCT at 2017-11-20 22:09:20
Murray correctly signalled offside by Matthew Wilkes who it must be said made a good judgement with a non offside flag for Stokes opening goal.

Assistants must Assist the Referee RCT at 2017-11-20 22:07:58
Is there a feeling lately that our Assistants are not assisting as they should be? Please keep your views coming on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com

Brighton to kick off the 2nd half RCT at 2017-11-20 22:03:43
Very important half now as we kick off

Half Time Summary RCT at 2017-11-20 22:02:06
Plenty to discuss so far; Let us get straight to the big key match decisions so far in this game. Brighton should been awarded a clear penalty kick 38th minute. Why not given? from an education point of view and that is what YATR IS ALL ABOUT THEN LEE MASON WAS SOMEWAY BEHIND PLAY HAVING THEN ARRIVED AT THE SCENE WAS NOT IN THE BEST POSITION TO VIEW. Also I was surprised that Adrian Holmes did not assist other than to tell Lee Mason it was a gk not a ck. That was the last thing Brighton wanted to know when they were expecting Adrian Holmes to tell Lee Mason it should be a penalty kick. Murray then with feelings running high commits a reckless tackle which endangers the safety of an opponent, he then to his own relief is only shown the yellow and the expected red card does not appear from Lee Mason`s top pocket. Again, the Assistant Holmes should have assisted Lee here. Having reviewed the Brighton goal again then Murray does not impede the Stoke goal keepers view and the goal is correctly awarded. Plenty for all officials to discuss at half time and there is plenty of work to do in the 2nd half. Lee does need to up his pace, movement and creating better viewing angles. Adrian Holmes will be disappointed that he has not assisted Lee on the Shawcross yellow card, the Brighton penalty kick and the Murray red card. Having said that the referee really should be picking up these key decisions. Please keep your views coming on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com

Half Time RCT at 2017-11-20 21:49:08
Half Time 1-2

45+2 RCT at 2017-11-20 21:48:40
With the Brighton equaliser there may be a suspicion of Murray impeding the Goal keepers view and being in an offside position? one to look at gain at half time and discuss

45+36 RCT at 2017-11-20 21:46:41
GOAL! Zouma with a header to make it 1-2

43 RCT at 2017-11-20 21:45:54
GOAL! Gross scores to make it 1-1 and this will settle things somewhat just before half time.

41 RCT at 2017-11-20 21:43:15
Murray commits a foul that endangers the safety of an opponent and is show aYellow Cardwhen it should be red. This foul tackle was made with excessive force.

40 RCT at 2017-11-20 21:41:43
Tempo up as frustrations and tensions rise from an incorrect key match error

38 RCT at 2017-11-20 21:40:35
Shawcross then commits a clear foul on Murray and a penalty kick should be awarded. Lee Mason the awards a ck to Brighton changes his mind to award a gk to Stoke. The referee had no help from his Assistant and he did not have the best position to view. A clear key match error.

34 RCT at 2017-11-20 21:37:01
Knockaert is signalled offside by Holmes it is a close call but remembering the offside law then the following applies:   A player is in an offside position if:
  • any part of the head, body or feet is in the opponents’ half (excluding the halfway line) and
  • any part of the head, body or feet is nearer to the opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the 2nd last opponent
  • The hands and arms of all players, including the goalkeepers, are not considered

32 RCT at 2017-11-20 21:34:13
The referee is showing steady pace and he has been wiping his brow quite a bit with 2rds of the game to go.

30 RCT at 2017-11-20 21:31:55
As the ball leaves the field Shawcross comes across Murray with an arm across Murray. This duel is developing and the referee must be aware.

29 RCT at 2017-11-20 21:29:55
FK to Stoke as the tempo rises following the Stoke goal

27 RCT at 2017-11-20 21:29:02
GOAL! Choupo-Moting from a tight but correct non offside flag.

24 RCT at 2017-11-20 21:27:59
The last Stoke throw in was allowed to taken some way down the touchline from were the ball left the field of play. Important as an Assistant when they are right in front of you to be firm in the correct position of the restart.

22 RCT at 2017-11-20 21:24:10
A reckless challenge is then committed by Shawcross and this should have resulted in a yellow card for Shawcross. I am surprised that the Assistant Holmes did not advise the referee of this fact or even how the referee did not detect this.

20 RCT at 2017-11-20 21:22:18
A good advantage from Lee allows a good attacking move for Stoke. As referee it always important to speak to offender and offended to let both know that you have seen the offence but allowed the advantage.

17 RCT at 2017-11-20 21:19:25
A quick break by Brighton sees Lee a long way behind play and as Izquierdo shoots on goal if a key decision is required then the referee is a long way behind play to make a judgement.

16 RCT at 2017-11-20 21:16:55
Good non offside flag from Adrian Holmes as the Brighton player remains just on side

14 RCT at 2017-11-20 21:16:00
Bong careless and a fk to Stoke is awarded.

11 RCT at 2017-11-20 21:14:55
Stoke early pressure see Shaqiri with an effort that is blocked and goes wide for a ck. Confusion then between Lee and Matthew Wilkes as both look to each other and then give a goal kick when the correct outcome would have been a Stoke corner kick.

Referees early movement and positioning RCT at 2017-11-20 21:11:40
So far Lee is adopting a fairly narrow angle and keeping fairly central, with a gentle jog. It will be important tonight to get into those channels down the left and to obtain the best viewing angle and position to make his judgements. Let us see how this area develops tonight.

6 RCT at 2017-11-20 21:09:11
Head injury to Shawcross and Knockaert quickly stopped by the referee. Assessment to Shawcross and Shawcross then leaves the field of play, to return moments later.

6 RCT at 2017-11-20 21:09:07

4 RCT at 2017-11-20 21:06:20
Shawcross and Murray are spoken to at a stoppage by the referee as both players look to assert their authority on the game. This could be a dual to watch tonight.

2 Big talking points from the weekend - OFFSIDE RCT at 2017-11-20 20:41:35
Looking at 2 big talking points from the weekend (amongst other key match decisions) then firstly I want to focus on Offside. There have been 2 very similar key match decision offside errors at the weekend in the EFL. Firstly in the Arsenal v Spurs game covered on REFCAM. AR Ian Hussin had a massive decision to make just prior to the Arsenal first goal and this OFFSIDE call was INCORRECT. The Arsenal player played the ball from a set piece, with all the players static, Then as an Assistant if you are in position in line with the 2nd rearmost defender then it is easy to spot if someone drifts offside before the ball is played. All the AR has to do then is to wait to see if that player gets involved in the active play. If anyone else except Mustafi had scored the first goal then the AR would have been correct in Law by not raising his flag. But as this player clearly became involved in the active play, then a delayed OFFSIDE signal was called for and the goal should have been disallowed. That was a classic example for VAR to be used, when the “goal” would quite rightly have been chalked off. From an educaton point of view which is what YATR is all about then you have to question Ian Hussin`s position on the touchline which is not directly in line with the 2nd rearmost Spurs defender. You also have to then consider the Assistants concentration, focus and reading of the offside situation at that moment in time which was incorrect.   In the Bournemouth v Huddersfield game then the 2nd goal for Huddersfield should have been ruled out for offside in an almost identical situation to the Arsenal v Spurs game. Assistant Andy Garratt`s position is in line the Bournemouth attacker and not the 2nd rearmost Huddersfield defender. From this forward position as an Assistant then you cannot make the correct OFFSIDE judgement, your vision is completely out of focus and you think you are reading the situation correctly when in fact your judgement is flawed. For more information on this educational point of view then look no further than the YATR Academy, why not join today?…………… YATR Academy is now available for referees from all over the world to join a platform like no other which will give you access to:
