Full Time Our RefCam coverage continues tomorrow as Arsenal take on West Brom – hopefully you can join us once again, KO 8pm UK time. Thanks for tuning in and enjoy the rest of your Sunday.
Full Time AH at 2017-09-24 17:57:52 One interesting post-match taking point is the challenge by Thomas Hemed on DeAndre Yeldin, the key question being did Hemed intentionally tread on his opponent, or was it purely accidental?  Chris Houghton was quick to defend his player, but then he would, wouldn’t he?  One for the 3 wise man at the FA I reckon, but it will be interesting to see what transpires.  For me, it is nothing like as clear cut as the Tyrone Mings / Zlatan Ibrahimović incident from last season which we covered in depth here at You Are The Ref, but it’s a great talking point which will divide opinion, I am sure.  Let us know what you think by tweeting us here @youaretheref

Full Time Andre Marriner and his team should be very pleased with their afternoon’s work – the key plus points being:
  • The referee showed a calm and collected approach throughout – he was not swayed at all by player or crowd.
  • His recognition of penal offences was of a very high standard throughout; I cannot recall one occurrence of an obviously incorrect call, and his decision to caution Knockaert in the early stages of the game was another major plus.
  • The key plus point was the referee’s ability to make the job in hand look easy – he has a calm authority and is confident, without being arrogant.
There can be no doubt that the game was brought to safe and successful conclusion by the match officials was no controversy to speak about, just what the referee and his team would have wished for at kick-off.

Full Time Game over – match summary to follow …

90+3 AH at 2017-09-24 17:51:25
Yellow CardAndre Marriner keeps his standards in the closing seconds as Lascelles is correctly cautioned

90 AH at 2017-09-24 17:47:14
3 additional minutes ….

85 AH at 2017-09-24 17:42:34
#BHANEW 5 minutes to go here at the Am-Ex for the referee to see the game safely home – the last thing he would want now would be a controversial end to the match.

79 AH at 2017-09-24 17:38:54
#BHANEW The is better man-management by the referee, a shake of the hand as Knockaert leaves the field of play, coupled with subtle encouragement not to waste time as he is doing so.

76 AH at 2017-09-24 17:35:39
Yellow CardDuffy clatters and the yellow card is inevitable! I question the wisdom however of helping the player to his feet in that situation – that is a risk the referee simply does not have to take!

75 AH at 2017-09-24 17:33:17
Accurate decision making as Richard West awards a throw-in to Newcastle, but that was not the calmest throw-in signal I have ever seen!

70 AH at 2017-09-24 17:28:08
#BHANEW 20 minutes to go – are the Home Team settling for the 1-0 by slowing the game down – when does ‘time consuming’ become ‘time wasting’ – one for the refereeing team to keep a close eye on.

62 AH at 2017-09-24 17:22:44
#BHANEW Good teamwork by Simon Beck as he correctly allows play to continue for a challenge in front of him – matching the referee’s interpretation of similar incidents.

60 AH at 2017-09-24 17:18:47
30 minutes to go and Andre Marriner continues to look calm and composed – once again making the correct decision as Ritchie wins a free-kick for the Away Team

55 AH at 2017-09-24 17:15:12
#BHANEW Goal Line Technology to the fore as Andre Marriner correctly rules no goal – Rob Elliot in the Newcastle goal keeping his team in the game with a goal-line save.. Mind you, for one second, the referee appeared to look at the wrong wrist !!! No harm done, correct decision.

51 AH at 2017-09-24 17:10:50
GOAL! Right on cue, Hemed fires home from close range – game on – watch the intensity and the temperature of the game increase – time to go to work for the 3rd team on the field of play ….

48 AH at 2017-09-24 17:07:53
In referee coaching terms, we often talk about ‘game changes’, i.e. incidents which effect the course of the game, frequently these are goals, substitutions, cautions – we could do with one early in the second half ….

46 AH at 2017-09-24 17:03:24
#BHANEW The 2nd half is underway, and, at risk of repeating myself, lets’ hope for an early goal to put some spark into the game …

Half Time AH at 2017-09-24 16:54:27
Half Time #BHANEW Some great articles on our website for your half-time reading, no more so than http://you-are-the-ref.com/is-it-time-for-female-referees-in-the-male-game/ by Jason Petigrove.  Let us know what you think, especially if you are one of the ever growing band of female referees.

Half Time AH at 2017-09-24 16:52:59
Half Time  #BHANEW The old refereeing adage says that the first 45 minutes are always the easiest, very true in many cases, and the danger is always that the refereeing team come out for the second half thinking ‘job done’.  Not for one minute do I think that will be the case here!

Half Time AH at 2017-09-24 16:49:49
Half Time A perfectly satisfactory first 45 for Andre and his team.  He was challenged just once and his decision to caution Knockaert was both technically correct and well timed in order to gain and retain match control.

44 AH at 2017-09-24 16:46:32
Good to see a smile and thumbs-up from our match referee as he awards a free-kick, proving that he is calm and relaxed – significantly, no objections from the players …

42 AH at 2017-09-24 16:44:22
Mmmm – is this football or is this chess? Both sides being unambitious and shots on target are at a premium, not that that will worry the refereeing team one bit – they will be happy to go in at half-time with match well and truly under their control

38 AH at 2017-09-24 16:40:10
#BHANEW Once again, good positional sense by Andre Marriner as Ritchie is tumbled by Gross – but the resulting free-kick, symptomatic of the first-half, comes to nothing.  Oh, we could do with a goal ……

34 AH at 2017-09-24 16:37:35
#BHANEW Just 3 weeks to go until Mark Halsey and team take on Kilimanjaro and aim to become the team who officiate in the highest game in the world.  Visit https://t.co/Rh8b6wB9Qb and support Mark’s efforts in raising money for the Steve Prescott Foundation

29 AH at 2017-09-24 16:33:44
#BHANEW Knockaert perhaps unfortunate to be given offside – did he meet the criteria in terms of his offside position becoming an offence, and he looked pretty aggrieved at the Assistant’s decision?  What do you think, please let us know by tweeting us

27 AH at 2017-09-24 16:27:19
#BHANEW Andre Marriner continues to utilise his languid running style – nothing missed so far …..

23 AH at 2017-09-24 16:23:57
#BHANEW A quarter of the way through the game as we have only had 2 shots on target, illustrated by Joselu as he fires wide from close range – a goal would be good, but the game hasn’t really found any pattern or shape.

Yellow CardThe first real test for the referee and he responds well as Knockaert’s challenge is penalised, and justifiably so as it wold have been more in place at the American Football game currently taking place up the road at Wembley. The former Leicester City striker can have no complaints about that one.

11 AH at 2017-09-24 16:12:52
This is not untypical Premier League fayre, fast and physical, goal mouth action, players so far showing a good degree of discipline, with just 1 penal offence being awarded.

8 AH at 2017-09-24 16:08:28
Nothing to concern the refereeing team so far in the first 8 minutes of this game …..

5 AH at 2017-09-24 16:05:43
#BHANEW Andre Marriner would not profess to be the most athletic referee on the EPL, but his experience allows him to read the game well, resulting in a good positional sense and good proximity to play.

1 AH at 2017-09-24 16:02:39
A good early start for Andre Marriner as Duffy offends at the first attack of the game and he confidently awards a free-kick to the Away Team

1 AH at 2017-09-24 16:00:37
#BHANEW Here we go – good luck to the refereeing team …..

Pre-Match AH at 2017-09-24 15:57:30

#BHANEW If you tuned in to watch the Sheffield derby from the EPL earlier today, were you impressed as I was with Simon Hooper’s match control – which was never in doubt for 90+ minutes.

Pre-Match AH at 2017-09-24 15:38:31
Andre Marriner is the man in charge this afternoon, Simon Beck and Richard West provide experience as Assistants, and Craig Pawson – fresh from his ‘disagreement’ with Jose Mourinho at Southampton yesterday- is on the 4th official duty.  Craig will no doubt be hoping for a quieter technical area this afternoon.
