#BHABOU Our RefCam coverages keep coming this afternoon as Manchester United make the short trip along the M62 to Goodison Park to take on Everton, 5.30pm KO UK time, under the watchful eye of Guy Beale. I am sure Wayne Rooney will be looking forward to playing against his old club, why not tune in, it will be a fascinating encounter I am sure.

That was a quality performance by Michael Oliver, his contribution to a cracking game of football was noteworthy. The key plus points being:
- Pre-match I referenced Michael’s commendable positioning and fitness levels, this was faultless throughout and a perfect example for up and coming referees.
- He used his cautions wisely, the 3 he issued in the closing 10 minutes were technically correct and key to maintaining control .
- An honourable mention is due to the Assistant Referees who backed-up Michael’s refereeing style with solid displays.

Summary to follow ….
AH at 2018-01-01 15:17:43
#BHABOU Good technical refereeing allows the referee to manage the game with 2 well-timed and fully deserved cautions to Francis and Murray respectively
AH at 2018-01-01 15:14:25
#BHABOU At the risk of repeating myself, once again Michael Oliver could not be better placed to detect a deflected ball and to award a throw-in to Bournemouth. Ok, it’s only a throw-in at the half-way line, but get the small decisions right …..
AH at 2018-01-01 15:10:57
#BHABOU With 10 minutes remaining, Propper, quite rightly, receives the first yellow card of the day for a cynical challenge in the centre-circle, giving the ideal opportunity for Michael Oliver to cement his match control
AH at 2018-01-01 15:08:09
Well, that wasn’t a contender for goal of the season, but Eddie Howe and his team won’t care as the ball ping-pongs around the penalty area and somehow Callum Wilson stabs the ball home.
AH at 2018-01-01 15:04:14
#BHABOU 15 minutes to go and time for the Refereeing Team to refocus and see the game home to a safe and successful conclusion ….
AH at 2018-01-01 15:01:31
#BHABOU Genuine thanks to @RodneyMarsh10 (the Rodney Marsh I wonder?) for his tweet regarding the possible caution for simulation – let us know your thoughts by tweeting us here @youaretheref
AH at 2018-01-01 14:56:44
More credible use of the advantage clause as Brighton break – they should have, in all honesty, scored a 3rd goal and put the game to bed.
AH at 2018-01-01 14:54:42
#BHABOU – First class positioning once again by Michael Oliver as he correctly recognises that Smith’s theatrical fall to the ground was a clear attempt to win a penalty. There was a case on that occasion for the game’s first yellow card.
AH at 2018-01-01 14:51:20
#BHABOU Callum Wilson goes to ground in an exaggerated manner in an attempt to win a penalty, Michael Oliver is having nothing of it. Not enough about Wilson’s actions to merit a caution for simulation – play on was the correct call in my opinion. Worth noting the referee’s great position to make the call.
AH at 2018-01-01 14:47:09
#BHABOU 15 minutes of the second half gone. Michael Oliver and his team must be very pleased with the way the game has gone so far. No cautions, coupled with solid overall decision-making, has meant that the focus has been away from the refereeing team. Let’s hope it stays that way for the remaining 30 minutes.
AH at 2018-01-01 14:44:37
#BHABOU An interesting debate developing here at You Are The Ref towers as we watch Michael Oliver as to who are the leading referees in the Premier League this season – who gets your vote for 1,2 and 3? Let us know by tweeting us here @youaretheref
AH at 2018-01-01 14:40:41
#BHABOU Bournemouth once again employ illegal tactics at an attacking corner-kick as Cook offends, once again referee Michael Oliver is aware and correctly awards a free-kick to Brighton.
AH at 2018-01-01 14:36:41
Bournemouth old-boy (it’s it often the case) Glenn Murray gets the 2nd half off to a cracker-jack start with an early goal – game on once again!
AH at 2018-01-01 14:33:38
#BHABOU The second half is underway, let’s hope for a repeat of the first in terms of match control….
AH at 2018-01-01 14:25:00
As always, some great articles on our website for your half-time reading, including some interesting thoughts from Mark Saggers on the use of VAR, 4th officials and many other topics – please visit http://you-are-the-ref.com/mark-saggers-ive-a-plan-to-put-referees-right-at-the-helm/ for details.
AH at 2018-01-01 14:22:14
#BHABOU So far, so good for the Refereeing Team. One tactic being employed by Bournemouth is subtle ‘blocking’ in the penalty area at corner-kicks, not in a blatant manner, enough to give them an advantage – but is this legal – let us know your thoughts by tweeting us @youaretheref
AH at 2018-01-01 14:17:19
Just 2 minutes to half-time and only 1 minor talking point so far, Knockaert’s “handball” challenge in the 22nd minute. What’s your opinion of the incident – was there any intention from Knockaert, was his arm in the expected position as he went to ground, how far did the ball travel and a what speed? Tweet us here @youaretheref with your thoughts.
AH at 2018-01-01 14:11:39
Ibe challenges illegally and Michael Oliver allows him the benefit of any doubt in terms of judging the challenge as free-kick only. That may have been yellow has the ‘temperature’ of the game been higher; hopefully that decision will not back-fire on the referee – I sense not.
AH at 2018-01-01 14:03:58
Steve Cook rises high from the corner and the Away Team have parity – that’s a fair reflection of play so far I reckon.
AH at 2018-01-01 14:00:55
#BHABOU Great to see both Assistant Referees adopting to the Referees interpretation of penal offences, on this occasion Simon Bennett choosing not to indicate as Brighton developed an attack.
AH at 2018-01-01 13:58:03
#BHABOU Loving it – a subtle low-key advantage is applied as Cook is fouled – no histrionics, just sound and solid refereeing.
AH at 2018-01-01 13:55:05
#BHABOU More decisive decision making as Begovic is illegally challenged in the penalty area – no fuss, no bother from the referee – he follows this up with correctly allowing play to continue as the ball strikes Knockaert’s arm.
AH at 2018-01-01 13:51:37
#BHABOU Good positive decision making from Stuart Burt to award a goal-kick, his body language was strong and his signal was decisive, with both players readily accepting the decision as the correct one.
AH at 2018-01-01 13:47:26
#BHABOU What’s your opinion on the game so far, let us know, contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com.
AH at 2018-01-01 13:44:11
#BHABOU Did you notice Michael Oliver’s position as the Bournemouth shot on goal went wide, he was ideally placed to judge that the Brighton keeper Ryan had made no contact with the ball, correctly awarding the goal-kick.
AH at 2018-01-01 13:40:52
#BHABOU 10 minutes gone and so far the Refereeing team have had minimal impact on the game, good news for all concerned, if they want to play, let them play!
AH at 2018-01-01 13:37:08
We already have a goal – injury doubt Knockaert fires home from a tight angle to give the Home side the lead – game on!
AH at 2018-01-01 13:34:50
#BHABOU Throughout the game it’s worth keeping an eye on Michael Oliver’s fitness, positioning and movement, an object lesson for up and coming referees.
AH at 2018-01-01 13:30:54
Here we go – good luck to Micheal and his team …..
AH at 2018-01-01 13:27:30
#BHABOU Michael Oliver is the man in charge for this game, Simon Bennett and Stuart Burt provide the on the field support, Kevin Friend has the 4th official duties. Michael has refereed two Brighton matches this season, but no Bournemouth fixture since their ill-fated visit to White Hart Lane, which ended 4-0 to Spurs in April. Only Ryan Fraser managed to have his name taken after another early kick-off for the TV cameras.
AH at 2018-01-01 13:22:52
#BHABOU Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola also passed public comment following Palace’s Jason Puncheon’s “robust” challenge on Kevin du Bruyne, where he appealed for more protection for his players. Do you think referee Jon Moss’s actions were appropriate?
We welcome your comments on this, and any other refereeing talking points, tweet us @youaretheref, it will be great to hear from you.

#BHABOU Referee Craig Pawson’s decision not to award a penalty kick at Old Trafford against Southampton’s Yoshida for a very similar incident to the Chambers one has received justified praise from You Are The Ref Director Keith Hackett. Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Keith quotes “I think Pawson got a very tough call right, while Dean was wrong. The law is clear in stating that for a penalty to be awarded, the ball must have been deliberately handled. Yoshida’s hand is higher than Chambers’ at the Hawthorns and it is difficult to argue that the Southampton player could have got it out the way. To award a penalty in these circumstances, there should be no room for doubt. At Old Trafford, I think there clearly was. At the Hawthorns, Dean seemed to me very quick – perhaps too quick – to rush in to award the penalty.”
AH at 2018-01-01 13:18:24
#BHABOU Plenty to discuss following yesterday’s games, no more so than Mike Dean’s late penalty award at The Hawthorns for ‘handball’ committed by Callum Chambers, which led to Arsene Wegner quoting “Referees do not work enough”. I wonder if that comment will get him in to hot-water with the powers that be at The FA. The was also much discussion regarding the non-award of a penalty to Danny Welbeck in the same game.

My colleagues here at You Are The Ref having provided some fascinating pre-match facts for today’s game – enjoy:
Both these clubs have had all too close a brush with extinction, Brighton’s coming in 1997 and Bournemouth’s in 2009, when they were saved during current boss Eddie Howe’s first spell in charge.
Albion have gone through over a dozen managers since their escape, and brought in 13 players following last summer’s promotion from the Championship, while Howe returned to replace Paul Groves in October 2012 and took the Cherries to a 9th place PL finish in 2016.
The visitors have won four more of the games between the two than the hosts, who emphatically won the first in Sussex in December, 1923. That ended 5-0 in Division Three (south).
The last league game in Sussex saw Yann Kermorgant and Callum Wilson score for Bournemouth in a 2-0 away in the Championship. Referee Craig Pawson cautioned Adam Smith and Joe Bennett, who played for both clubs on loan before rocking up at Cardiff, as well as Lewis Dunk.
Rather than return to the subject of September’s Carabao Cup win after extra time for AFCB, Aussie goalkeepers Adam Federici and Mathew Ryan are surely more likely to discuss their group C World Cup prospects, while fellow keeper Artur Boruc might be less interested in engaging in mind games with Colombian Jose Izquierdo since he retired from international football with Poland earlier this year.

The family of referees here in South Yorkshire and beyond are mourning the untimely passing of one of our own, Dave Fields, who passed away on Christmas Eve performing his duties as a Police Officer. I was privileged and proud to have known Dave as a personal friend for many years, and the team here at You Are The Ref send our sympathies to his family and friends on this very sad occasion.
