Brighton v Chelsea

at 2018-01-20 15:39:21

In the end a comfortable victory for Chelsea but Brighton will feel agrieved by their penalty claims which went against them. Once again we are talking about “BIG” decisions which were incorrect. We all know that at full speed it can be difficult to detect exactly what happened but as a Referee you have to give yourself the best option to get an uninterrupted view of procedings. In the incident with the goalkeeper the Referee was a little behind play and had is view blocked by other players. Had he been further forward with a clear view this may well have resulted in a different outcome. However, he received no help from AR1 who did have a clear view. All too often we are seeing Assistants who do not take responsibility and do what they are there for…to ASSIST.  Such situations are tailor made for VAR assistance which (as I said with correct training) would ensure that the BIG decisions were correctly judged.  From early doors the Referee looked uncomfortable in dealing successfully with quick counter-attacks by both teams, and better fitness, reading of the game and a more proactive approach to movement would have proved more than beneficial. Thanks for joining me this afternoon.  Don’t forget further RefCam games today at 5.30pm Manchester City v Newcastle Utd and tomorrow 4.00pm Southampton v Tottenham Hotspur.

S.M. at 2018-01-20 15:05:03

GOAL! by Hazard for Chelsea.

S.M. at 2018-01-20 15:04:05

Silly confrontation between  Batshuayi and Dunk. Referee deals with it calmly with a rebuke to both players.

Substitution for Chelsea. Zappacosta replaces Alonso.

S.M. at 2018-01-20 15:01:29

Good judgement by the Referee when Kante makes a good challenge for the ball.

S.M. at 2018-01-20 14:56:28

Brighton Substitutions   Kayal for Gross and Murray for Hemed.

S.M. at 2018-01-20 14:51:37

Foul by Gross on Hazard. Free kick to Chelsea.     Corner kick to Brighton.

S.M. at 2018-01-20 14:46:49

Yellow Cardfor Duffy following reckless challenge on Hazard.

Chelsea substitution David Louis for Christensen

S.M. at 2018-01-20 14:39:09

Brighton unlucky with a shot hitting the post while Chelsea were down to 10 men as Christensen was off the pitch.

S.M. at 2018-01-20 14:37:22

The quick-fire start by Chelsea put them well in control but the hosts replied in a positive manner. Unfortunately they were not helped by the two penalty decisions which were not given. The first one for the challenge by the Chelsea goalkeeper was difficult to give as the Referee did not have a clear view but he was not helped by his Assistant. However, had the Referee “sold” the decision this would have removed the perception that he was unsure and this was also the case with the second judgement. A better movement in dealing with the quick counter-attacks would have allowed the Referee to be further forward and enabled a clearer view of the challenge. VAR would have been great in these situations ( providing that the correct training in usage is given ).

Half Time

S.M. at 2018-01-20 14:18:57

1 minute additional time. Suttner challenge on Hazard gives the Referee another decision to make. Again the Referee got the call correct in allowing play to continue and not award a penalty kick to Chelsea.

S.M. at 2018-01-20 14:08:33

Another big call for the Referee following Schelotto being challenged by Bakayoko. This time In my opinion the Referee got it correct.Yellow Cardfor Schelotto for his protestations.

S.M. at 2018-01-20 14:02:28

A good example just seen of reactive rather than proactive movement as the Referee is in a static midfield  position next to a Brighton player in possession, then having to make a move to try to catch up with play when the pass is made.

S.M. at 2018-01-20 13:59:06

A good flag signal by AR2 to indicate ball out of play for goal kick just prior to the Chelsea attacker putting in a cross.

S.M. at 2018-01-20 13:57:36

A few careless challenges being committed by both teams which the Referee is recognising and punishing with free-kicks.  But this is expected at any level.

S.M. at 2018-01-20 13:55:18

Had the Referee been further forward he would have had an unimpeded view to judge the goalkeepers challenge and hopefully awarded the penalty kick.

S.M. at 2018-01-20 13:52:34

Caballero catches his opponents ankle. No penalty kick awarded but replay shows definite contact. Big decision but Referee’s view was blocked by other players. The Assistant Referee was better placed to view the incident and yet nothing was given. Oh dear 20 minutes gone and another BIG error.

S.M. at 2018-01-20 13:45:34

Clumsy challenge on Hazard. Correct of award of free-kick to Chelsea. Free-kick to Brighton. Referee eventually gives direction signal the correct way.

S.M. at 2018-01-20 13:43:04

Chelsea controlling possession is allowing the Referee to sensibly have a breather while remaining near to play in midfield.

S.M. at 2018-01-20 13:38:18

A good counter-attack by Brighton and Jon Moss already doesn’t look too comfortable in making up ground.

Chelsea score again GOAL! as Willian rounds off a clever Chelsea move.

S.M. at 2018-01-20 13:35:30

Chelsea take a very early lead. GOAL! Hazard fires into goal from inside the penalty area

S.M. at 2018-01-20 13:34:22

The Referee not bothering using the spray but uses arms to indicate the 10 yards distance for the defenders.

S.M. at 2018-01-20 13:32:52

First free kick to Chelsea following a minor careless tackle.

S.M. at 2018-01-20 13:31:42

Chelsea get the game underway.

S.M. at 2018-01-20 13:30:53

There is a 1 minutes applause in memory of Cyril Regis who sadly passed away earlier in the week.

Good afternoon and welcome to this afternoons early Premiership game between Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea. Brighton lie in 16th position in their first season back in the league and have not beaten Chelsea since 1933. Chelsea lie 4th in the table and are looking to move ahead of Liverpool with a win. Todays Referee is Jon Moss who will be assisted by Eddie Smart and Andy Halliday with Kevin Friend acting as 4th Official.  Join me in around 15 minutes to see how things pan out. Hopefully we shall be talking more about the game rather then the Officials today. Time will tell.
