Brazil v Germany – Match 61 – Semi Final

Commentary By: The Ref Cam Team

See you for the second semi-final tomorrow night, here’s hoping for a better overall refereeing performance and another 8 goal thriller.

at 2014-07-08 22:49:40
It’s Lahm to the slaughter as Brazil are butchered in Bela Horizonte

at 2014-07-08 22:49:16
Penal offence recognition was accurate, but player management and his decisions on when and when not to caution was below par.

at 2014-07-08 22:48:40
Ref Cam’s view is the referee and his team have had an “OK” sort of game, but did not shine and sparkle in such a key game or them.  The second half was “flat” and the referee and his team did not appear to know how to raise their game to do themselves justice.

at 2014-07-08 22:47:00
Never has a goal been greeted with such a stunned silence …..

at 2014-07-08 22:45:41
It is fantastic to see Brazilian fans demonstrate what respect really means in their admiration for the German performance …..

Surely in the interests of all concerned, we shall not have a vast amount of additional time ? How much added time would you allow ?

at 2014-07-08 22:36:33
Go on then, be honest, would you have predicted 7-0 !!!!

at 2014-07-08 22:34:41
We believe that Luis should have a caution now for a number of reasons, least of all being persistent infringement ….

at 2014-07-08 22:29:27
It’s vitally important the the referee and his team remain focused for the final 15 minutes ….

at 2014-07-08 22:27:24
Will some Brazillian players welcome a red card and perhaps invite one?

at 2014-07-08 22:26:36
Germans show six appeal as Brazil flounder ….

at 2014-07-08 22:24:46
At last – a correct yellow card for Brazil #13 – but too little too late from the referee …

at 2014-07-08 22:23:42
That is not offside – the attacking player does NOT play the ball – if he does, then the flag is raised ….

at 2014-07-08 22:22:09
That was his second opportunity in the space of 5 minutes for a yellow card – why not Mr Referee ?

at 2014-07-08 22:18:59
The “dive” was an ideal opportunity for the referee to assert his authority with a yellow card

at 2014-07-08 22:16:50
He should also be ensuring that Muller’s histrionics don’t become too excessive

at 2014-07-08 22:15:07
The referee should still be adopting the policy of “killing the game” and taking every opportunity to slow things down

at 2014-07-08 22:12:27
The referee needs to “shine” from now on in a game which, in refereeing terms, is “dull”… what can he do to raise his game, we sense he is just “going through the motions” at the moment.  He needs a spring in his step and a more positive overall body-language

at 2014-07-08 22:09:42
Great non-flag by the far side Assistant …

at 2014-07-08 22:08:15
Ever had “one of those days” Big Phil ?????

at 2014-07-08 22:07:15
Germany are sticking to their patterns of play, 1 forward and keeping it tight, this could cause the referee issues as the Brazil team have less and less chance of restoring some pride ….

at 2014-07-08 22:04:57
… and that the referee needs to assert his authority as the second half progresses ….

at 2014-07-08 22:04:00
We believe that more authority was required as the first half progressed …

at 2014-07-08 22:02:47
Thanks to Ian M for your thoughts during half-time – he has asked if we think Luis should have received a red card for use of the elbow – what do you think ?

at 2014-07-08 21:59:33
Surely Brazil will make substitutions, something for the referee to be wary of

at 2014-07-08 21:58:01
Germany will just continue to keep possession – that will make the Brazilian team make more challenges – and therefore the caution count will increase ….

at 2014-07-08 21:55:42
This is a vital first 10 minutes of the second half – it’s make or break time – his mantra has to be “give what’s expected – safety first refereeing!”

at 2014-07-08 21:52:31
Brazillian blend get a roasting as ref goes Lowe profile

at 2014-07-08 21:51:54
What’s going on in the 3 dressing rooms now – Germany elated – Brazil downhearted – Match Officials ??????

There was a period before the flurry of goals when the challenges became over-physical and he needed to assert his authority – the goals changed all that ….

at 2014-07-08 21:46:38
Half-time summary – the referee needs to keep focused although the game is “dead”.  It’s also interesting to note the different flagging styles of the Assistant Referees compared to their European colleagues …..

at 2014-07-08 21:45:23
We think the Assistant Referee indicated too early for offside – did the attacker offend ???

at 2014-07-08 21:41:55
The flag should be visible to the referee at all times ……

at 2014-07-08 21:39:11
Have you noticed the Far side assistant running with flag in hand furthest away from the ref

at 2014-07-08 21:38:04
Referee – still needs to apply law and issue cautions where required ….

at 2014-07-08 21:37:20
Why does the Assistant Referee indicate a throw-in by first raising the flag horizontally ???

at 2014-07-08 21:35:52
The last thing the ref needs is to distract from how poor the hosts have been and must give the decisions that everyone expects to see.

at 2014-07-08 21:35:00
It could be so easy for the refereeing team to ‘switch off’, thinking that the game is over – nothing could be further from the truth ….

at 2014-07-08 21:33:47
Would you have cautioned Brazil #4 for that challenge, just to keep a tight reign on proceedings ….

at 2014-07-08 21:32:41
The German team will just ‘keep-ball’, the hosts will become frustrated, take no risks Mr Referee …..

at 2014-07-08 21:31:04
This is the time for the refreeing team to “kill the game”, even with 60 minutes left. Adopt a No risk policy, safety first refereeing ….

at 2014-07-08 21:29:41
Should the referee have cautioned Brazil #7 for simulation  - perhaps not, but the 17 laws are the 17 laws …..

at 2014-07-08 21:28:19
Focus …. focus ….. focus …….

So, what’s the game plan Mr. Referee – if you were refereeing this game, would you do anything different …..

at 2014-07-08 21:25:51
4 – unbelievable …..

at 2014-07-08 21:25:17
Wow – 3 goals to the good – no is the time for the refereeing team to come to the party and maintain their concentration …..

at 2014-07-08 21:24:00
So – Germany are 2 goals to the good – will the Brazilian team start to get even more physical – will the Germans start to waste time – keep focused

at 2014-07-08 21:22:28
The physical challenges are becoming somewhat over physical – time to step in and take a firmer hand …..

at 2014-07-08 21:20:22
20 minutes – a good time for a card perhaps ??? Let us know what you think – contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com.

The match temperature is “high” – and the referee is responding well

at 2014-07-08 21:18:37
Our referee continues to do well – good authority  and correct decisions …..

RCT at 2014-07-08 21:11:59
Key that the referee remains focused – how will both teams react to the ‘trigger point’ of the goal ???

RCT at 2014-07-08 21:10:50
That will make life interesting ……

RCT at 2014-07-08 21:09:27
Applied the advantage and then gave the penal offence …..

RCT at 2014-07-08 21:08:39
good steady start …..

at 2014-07-08 21:01:25
Mmm – not the best call by the Assistant Referee ….

at 2014-07-08 21:00:11
Good luck Mr Referee – we hope the ball runs kindly for you……

Brazil 2014 is the third FIFA World Cup for Rodríguez and he refereed two games at each of the last two tournaments. In 2010, one of his matches was Germany’s 4-0 victory over Australia. During his career, Rodríguez has been selected for several international tournaments – so he has a vast amount if experience – here at You At The Ref think he will need it.

at 2014-07-08 20:52:28
Welcome to match 61 of the FIFA World Cup, the first semi-final between Brazil and Germany. The referee is Marco Rodríguez who is 40 years old and from Mexico. During this tournament he officiated the group-stage matches Belgium – Algeria and Italy – Uruguay.

at 2014-07-08 20:49:55
Put yourself in the Referee’s dressing room – what’s going on now, the clock ticks round slowly and you just want the game to start. They have to stick to a strict timetable and in many ways the TV Director and FIFA delegates are “in charge” prior to kick-off

at 2014-07-08 20:46:46
Is it just me – but Brazillian’s are meant to have names like Pele, Carlos Alberto and Socrates – but “Fred” !!!

at 2014-07-08 20:40:54
20 mins to kick-off, I am getting giddy …..

at 2014-07-08 20:38:08
Wherever in the world you are watching the game – enjoy – they don’t get much bigger than this ……

at 2014-07-08 20:37:05
Welcome to the first Semi-Final, it’s going to be a belter …..
