BRAZIL v CROATIA

World Cup, Thu 12th June, 21.00 BST

Japan’s Yuichi Nishimura is the referee given the responsibility of delivering the opening match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup

His Assistant Referees will be Toru Sagara and Toshiyuki Nagi.

Alireza Faghani from Iran will be the  fourth official.

I met Yuichi Nishimura, 42, in Kuala Lumpar a year ago when the AFC brought their referees together for training seminars.

He has a quiet and calm approach and is a very good choice for this opening game, although some thought that Englands Howard Webb might have had an early run out.

In South Africa 2010 he handled four matches, including the quarter-final encounter between the Netherlands and Brazil. Since making his international refereeing debut in 2004, Nishimura has been assigned to numerous other final tournaments. In 2012 he was named AFC Men’s Referee of the Year.

The opening game is not an easy encounter for the team of officials.

Massimo Busacca Head of FIFA Refereeing has made it clear that he wants a strict approach on the heavy challenges that put players at risk of injury.

The officials will have viewed in their workshops a number of videos that highlight Careless (Free kick only) Reckless ( Free kick and Yellow card) Reckless with excessive force (Red Card) challenges in an attempt to gain consistency in this group of referees.

This may just lead to a flurry of yellow cards from Nishimura in this game has he attempts to set the benchmark for the remaining games
