Brazil v Chile

AM at 2014-06-28 20:27:19

In summary I would say that the positives that I have highlighted in my BLOG would be Howards game plan which he would have planned, thought about and clearly delivered to his team . His game plan early in the game was to keep as close to play as possible and keep his cards close to him so as to be able to have the facility to use these later in the game, this worked perfectly for him as the first yellow card was for handball close by AR Cann far side. Teamwork and communication in perfect harmony here. Howard picked up the free kicks from close proximity due to his movement, skip to change directions ad acceleration when he was covering breakaways from defence. He showed clear communication to players and remained calm and cool under intense pressure from not only players but also occupants from the technical areas. We did discuss the borderline yellow card for No. 5 of Brazil which did not occur but he was then taken by his Coach and upon reflection you have to say in the overall summary that in the context of the overall game he was right. There was no sign of any grappling at corner kicks, why was this when in our Premier League it is a common occurrence?

In closing this was a magnificent refereeing performance supported by excellent Assistants with Mike Mullarkey coming in with an excellent intervention to indicate to Howard a handball by Hulk of Brazil and no goal. A crucial and key moment in the game. The 4th Official I could only observe that I would like to have seen him more proactive in his support of the Match Officials as I have highlighted in my BLOG. Prevention is better than cure and this may be an area that Keith Hackett may well cover in his BLOG as I know a number of you have texted in to advise why he was sitting down when he could have been having a more assertive approach towards the Coaches?

In conclusion this is a game that will always be remembered for the outstanding football played and seen and the outstanding performance of Howard, Mike and Darren who will quietly depart to the dressing in the satisfaction of knowing a job very well done.

Many thanks for your company this evening at – Join us again tomorrow for Mexico v Holland K.O. 17.00hrs

Neymar steps up, the pressure is on and he scores a quality goal. Did you notice AR Mike Mullarkeys position on the goal line on the edge of the goal area. Chile hit the post in their final penalty kick and so Chile are going home and Brazil go through to the quarter finals in a game of high tension, drama and mixed emotions. In the final replay of the last Chile penalty did you notice Howard and Mikes positions? did you look at their body language at such a crucial and important moment in this game. Their focus and concentration displayed is just magnificent after normal time, extra time and on the 10th penalty kick. My summary of their performance is to follow but what a wonderful game, with the 3rd team fully playing their part to contribute to a cracking game

AM at 2014-06-28 19:57:16

Here comes Hulk… saved by Chile goal keeper Bravo. The pressure is rising.. look at Howards position for the penalty kick on the edge of the goal area. Goal for Chile right down the middle of the goal.

AM at 2014-06-28 19:55:20

Marcello scores penalty for Brazil and brings some relief to the crowd. Chile respond with Aranguiz goal

AM at 2014-06-28 19:53:56

Willian Brazil missed penalty kick. Sanchez Chile penalty kick saved by Cesar

AM at 2014-06-28 19:52:46

Brazil goal 1st penalty, Chile penalty saved by Brazil goal keeper.

AM at 2014-06-28 19:51:41

And so we enter penalty kicks, Howard would have briefed to team before the game and each official will be clear of their duty at the taking of penalty kicks. Howard will be given the names of the players taking the penalty kicks. One Assistant will remain with the 4th Official in the centre circle. AR Mullarkey will be on the goal line.

AM at 2014-06-28 19:44:24

2 minutes added time and a goal kick awarded to Chile, full time whistle is sounded and we now enter penalty kicks. Now is your chance in the time available to look at Keith Hacketts BLOG for the law requirement!

Chie hit the bar, what an end that would have been! –  a real let off for Brazil. Great advantage signal by Howard then leads to a corner kick for Brazil

AM at 2014-06-28 19:39:27

As we enter towards penalty kicks don’t forget to look at Keith Hackettes BLOG on this site for law requirements, it is a must………

AM at 2014-06-28 19:38:33

Free kick to Brazil directly in front of the technical areas, again the 4th Official could have assisted by calming matters down and showing his presence

AM at 2014-06-28 19:36:40

Howard has covered an incredible distance in this game, how often do you see referees go down with cramp?? just as the Chile 20 goes down with cramp!

AM at 2014-06-28 19:35:00

Good challenge by Luiz of Brazil, followed by a foul by 2 Chile, free kick to Brazil

AM at 2014-06-28 19:33:44

Free kick to Brazil again Howards close proximity to play adds credibility to his decision making. Players will argue less if you are right on top of play.

AM at 2014-06-28 19:32:04

Free kick to Brazil Howard close to play to judge and ensure the free kick is taken from the correct position, safe refereeing to ensure the correct restart of play

AM at 2014-06-28 19:30:12

Throw in awarded had all the ball gone out of play?

AM at 2014-06-28 19:29:16

Brazil quick break did you notice Howards acceleration and then a skip to change direction? his energy levels are high

AM at 2014-06-28 19:27:59

17 Chile injury Howard quickly to check and sub to be made, 17 Chile off 13 Chile to come on as replacement

AM at 2014-06-28 19:26:33

Corner kick to Brazil, did you notice Howards viewing position?

AM at 2014-06-28 19:25:30

Last 15 minutes of the action of this cracker is under way

AM at 2014-06-28 19:24:58

Important Note – this is a must –  have a look now – If this game goes to penalty kicks then take a look at Keith Hackett`s excellent BLOG on this site for law requirements

AM at 2014-06-28 19:22:36

Yellow card 2 Brazil, reckless – free kick to Chile, correct outcome, free kick taken by Chile which misses the goal and Howard blows for the end of the 1st period of extra time

AM at 2014-06-28 19:20:47

Look how Howard has accelerated towards the penalty area, to get the best view. Offside Brazil, great flag technique Mike Mullarkey, 4th Official shows 1 minute added time

AM at 2014-06-28 19:18:54

No 9 Chile yellow card, on Brazil player spot on,  Howard just steps up his game as we move into the 2nd period of extra time, Did you notice how Howard communicated his yellow card towards the player?

AM at 2014-06-28 19:16:41

Play is tight and both teams will be looking towards the 2nd period of extra time, it is now tactical which way will it go?

AM at 2014-06-28 19:13:24

Chile manager remonstrating for a throw in on the edge of his technical area, surely the 4th Official should be helping Howard here?? where is he?

What are your thoughts? contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at

AM at 2014-06-28 19:11:58

Howard may need to consider the finger wagging towards him by players at free kicks, however easy for us to view on TV is Howard aware though? could the 4th Official help him here through the comms

AM at 2014-06-28 19:09:50

16 Brazil on 7 Chile,  careless challenge free kick to Chile.

AM at 2014-06-28 19:08:53

High foot on Chile keeper by 21 Brazil, keeper hesitated though, yellow card for Jo reckless challenge on goal keeper correct outcome achieved

AM at 2014-06-28 19:06:50

Early free kick to Brazil, shove on Hulk, spray out I love it!

AM at 2014-06-28 19:05:11

Extra time commences on Howards whistle, hold on tight.. which way will it go?

AM at 2014-06-28 19:04:21

And so Howard blows his whistle for full time and we enter extra time, this has so far been a wonderful game, have you noticed how the tempo has steadied in the 2nd half, players have responded positively to Howards style of management of this particular game. He has chosen his yellow cards correctly and this has aided to his overall disciplinary control. Teamwork is of the highest order, with replays clearly showing what an excellent piece of assistant refereeing support from Mike Mullarkey. The key here is his different view from Howard and one of the team has to be there to made these brave and courageous decision. Don’t forget they only have one look. There is no camera in the stands to use to replay these key decisions, should there be?

AM at 2014-06-28 18:58:12

Again referee and assistant in teamwork at a throw in and an offside to Chile again the flag technique is textbook and both Howard and Darren look to each to ensure the correct outcome and ball placement is ensured.

AM at 2014-06-28 18:55:34

Text book throw in signal from AR Cann just look and we can all learn from this aspect

AM at 2014-06-28 18:54:13

The 4th Official has now heard us and he is stood up!!  he signals 3 minutes of added time

AM at 2014-06-28 18:53:01

With play on the far touchline look at Howards position as he moves closer to play

AM at 2014-06-28 18:51:06

Chile sub 8 off 9 on

AM at 2014-06-28 18:50:52

Play has slowed as we enter full time, don’t forget there is extra time if required and then onto penalties if still level.

AM at 2014-06-28 18:49:08

With regards to the disallowed Brazil goal, was Fred`s arm in an unnatural position? did the player use his arm to control the flight path of the ball? did the Assistant make his brave call from the ideal; position? The team are supporting the referees decision.

What are your thoughts? contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at

AM at 2014-06-28 18:46:29

Concentration will be for the next 10 minutes.. with extra time looming

AM at 2014-06-28 18:45:28

Chile Manager on the edge of Technical Area where is the 4th Official? management here would help to calm matters

AM at 2014-06-28 18:44:08

Howard is right on the spot – free kick to Brazil, players are just accepting and just getting on with the game, a clear signal of the respect that they have for Howard and his overall control and reading of play, communication and being right on top of play

AM at 2014-06-28 18:41:39

My feeling is that the game is now settling down, Howards approach is paying off, he is in complete control, his yellow cards have been well chosen in his control of this game and the players are responding well to his management and over control of this game

AM at 2014-06-28 18:39:36

Great goal kick decision on looking at replays, the officials only have one look though!

AM at 2014-06-28 18:38:35

I would like to see the 4th Official become more active, he seems to taking a seated position when a more pro active approach would be beneficial to help manage the technical areas

AM at 2014-06-28 18:37:15

Well there we have it now! Brazil Coach takes off 5 of Brazil off and Ramires on

AM at 2014-06-28 18:35:41

Just look at the Assistants in field view, they are highly focussed and concentrating you cannot take your eyes off this for a second

AM at 2014-06-28 18:34:34

Howard right on the spot to give a free kick, he is right there, who will argue with this one!

AM at 2014-06-28 18:33:45

AR Mullarkey good offside flag, notice his text book technique how he holds the flags to sell the decision to all

AM at 2014-06-28 18:32:46

No penalty kick to chile, referee again clear view and good angle to make judgement, in the heat of this high tempo game he has to remain clear, calm and composed and Howard has all these attributes

AM at 2014-06-28 18:30:57

In tough games like these it can work for you to use free kick situations to slow down the game for short periods

AM at 2014-06-28 18:28:45

From an excellent save by Cesar Brazil, corner kick to Chile, did you notice the ARs position and flag in his nearest hand towards Howard

AM at 2014-06-28 18:27:18

Brazil sub 9 off 21 on

AM at 2014-06-28 18:27:00

Good free kick signal by AR Cann –  free kick to Brazil, good eye contact noted with Howard,

AM at 2014-06-28 18:25:50

No 5 of Brazil late challenge, he must be close now to a yellow card?

What are your thoughts? contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at

AM at 2014-06-28 18:24:36

Free kick to Chile foul on No 4 Chile, Howard is remaining consistent in his approach. There follows a yellow card No 17 Brazil reckless on No 8 Chile. Yellow card show in a respectful manner to No 17 Brazil

AM at 2014-06-28 18:21:58

Hulk of Brazil has scored a goal, however amid appeals for handball By Chile, Mike Mullarkey near side AR has indicated handball and the goal is disallowed and a yellow card for Hulk follows, good teamwork here seen, clear communication seen. Brazil Coach will need to remain calm and the 4th Official will need to work hard in this particular area

AM at 2014-06-28 18:16:12

Possible handball ? superb call though

AM at 2014-06-28 18:14:35

Look how Howard has moved in close for a throw to Chile, his presence is all that was required in front of the Brazil Coach. Great directional signal with a calm presence

AM at 2014-06-28 18:13:11

AR Cann just earlier remained composed and calm in his discussion with Luiz, this is really positive in communication with the player and adds to the teamwork ethic

AM at 2014-06-28 18:11:44

No free kick to Brazil, look at the referees view and judgement, no free kick, then free kick to Chile, AR Cann has calming words with Luiz  Brazil. Free kick well managed by Howard, look at his restart position, great view

AM at 2014-06-28 18:09:23

Don’t forget if needed today extra time and then penalties, get ready for the 2nd half, this is a cracking game, …. second half subs at half time

AM at 2014-06-28 18:05:51

Take a look at todays match commentator Guy Mowbray`s interview on You Are The Ref. Com.

AM at 2014-06-28 18:04:40

Howard is demonstrating his superb fitness covering lot of ground maintaining close proximity to play always looking for those good viewing angles. Teamwork has been first class look at the Assistants movement, body language and signal technique in the 2nd half

AM at 2014-06-28 18:00:59

In my opinion No 5 Brazil Fernandino persistent infringements will be discussed and his next foul challenge could well result in a yellow card. Keep an eye on this..

AM at 2014-06-28 17:58:38

Howard Webb blows his whistle for full time, a bit of a coming together between No 9 of Brazil and 17 of Chile keep your eyes on these 2 players in the 2nd half as Howard and his team will be made aware of this and will be discussing at half time, however the Webb team are working very hard and are on top of a very lively encounter. The half time commentary team have just reviewed what they thought was a penalty kick to Brazil. However in real time you have to view Howards position and the number of replays viewed by the commentary team before they arrive at a decision. The referee has one look from the best possible view and angle

Brazil free kick, a caution has to be coming soon I feel,  to tighten things up

AM at 2014-06-28 17:35:58

Good teamwork on a throw in to Chile, low leading signal from Howard to near side Assistant, this is great teamwork in place

AM at 2014-06-28 17:35:01

A throw in to Chile, notice the Assistant Mike Mullarkeys body language and in field focus and concentration, quick throw in and Chile are level 1-1

AM at 2014-06-28 17:25:01

AM at 2014-06-28 17:09:10

4th Official calming words with Brazil Manager, at a stoppage

AM at 2014-06-28 17:08:21

At this early stage the referee is making a good and consistent start, this is the game plan that Howard is adopting.

AM at 2014-06-28 16:48:21

As we

I now just want to give you an insight as we build up to this fascinating game this would be the type of events that Howard would be leading his team into:

Leave hotel, police escort drive to stadium, arrive at ground, goal line technology checks at ground, check players` footwear and remind jewellery removal, then warm up on the field of play, end of warm up reserve assistant referee will check nets, then back to dressing room, meet players in the tunnel area, final equipment check, walk out to FIFA anthem collecting match ball from podium as Howard walks out, national anthems and then fair play handshakes, team pictures followed by coin toss with captains and then last photo, assistants will then check nets for the last time, then kick off on the signal from the FIFA general co-ordinator. THEN THE REAL WORK BEGINS…

I just want to give

As we build

As we
