Full time summary

AM at 2016-03-01 23:02:04

From the outset of this derby game Mike Dean has quite simply been my man of the match tonight, he clearly set out his game plan from the start of the game and went on to be quite simply consistent in his punishment / non punishment of free kicks. His application of the laws of the game, match control, tactical approach and management of the game throughout were first class. He has aided all this with his positive communication skills hand / arm signals, reading of play and communication with the players which has been such a key point in his management of the players. His fitness, movement and close proximity to play has been as good as I have seen. Both Assistants were low key and I HAVE MENTIONED IN MY BLOG some technical areas of flagwork and inconsistency in their award non award of free kicks. All offside judgements have been correct. Marc Perry will (on seeing the replay) have been disappointed in his flag signal for the free kick which led to Bournemouth`s 2nd goal and whilst we could argue that Southampton could have defended this fk it still was not a fk in the first place. This would be down to concentration, position and his recognition of the fk award. Another consideration for Mike Dean at half time would have been the shock of Kevin Friend 4th Official and colleague who we learn fainted close to half time. MD would have had considerations to make finding a replacement 4th Official and agreeing which Assistant would have taken over the refereeing duties should he have had to come off for any reason in the 2nd half. We all at YATR.com would want to wish Kevin and his family every good wish and that he makes a safe and full recovery.

Minimum of 4 additional minutes

AM at 2016-03-01 22:37:34

87

AM at 2016-03-01 22:36:17

Again a foul by Pelle and a fk to B. is the outcome as MD from a close proximity and viewing angle awards a fk

86

AM at 2016-03-01 22:34:57

Last 4 minutes and additional time to go MD will be totally focussed to ensure this game remains firmly in his control

B. sub 10 off 7 on

AM at 2016-03-01 22:33:35

82

AM at 2016-03-01 22:32:44

Replays have just shown that Marc Perry who signalled a fk for a foul by Van Dijk but there does not appear to be any foul in this situation? so S. will feel aggrieved by this decision and the goal which followed from the resultant fk.

80

AM at 2016-03-01 22:29:48

Last B. ck  – Good spot from MD push in the back by a B. player on a S. player

79

AM at 2016-03-01 22:28:00

And from the fk comes a GOAL! to make it 2-0 Afobe

78

AM at 2016-03-01 22:27:09

Marc Perry gets involved in that last fk and signals a fk to B.

77

AM at 2016-03-01 22:26:06

Close proximity to play achieved by MD to advise and communicate no foul

75

AM at 2016-03-01 22:23:05

FK to B. following  a careless challenge by Pelle

MD retaining his consistency

AM at 2016-03-01 22:22:13

MD remains consistent in the area of his award of free kicks with no yellow or red cards to date and his management of the game to date has been really effective!

AM at 2016-03-01 22:19:27

Keith Hackett’s BLOG is always well worth a read as the ex-Premier League Manager, FIFA & Premier League Referee gives his honest and straight view on the latest talking points currently occurring in our game today.

Features and articles for you to view The FA should allow yellow card appeals Our aim at You Are The Ref is to inform and educate all stakeholders in the game. We look at referees’ decisions and comment accordingly,…

68

AM at 2016-03-01 22:18:32

FK to S. right in front of Marc Perry who chooses not to signal? with MD awarding from some distance. Why don’t ARs want to assist in these close areas to their position? has there been a change in directive?

S. sub Long 7 off to be replaced by 11 Tadic – B. sub 17 off 28 on

66

AM at 2016-03-01 22:14:50

With regards to the previous comment about casual signalling this would apply at any level as an Assistant!

B. sub 8 off 4 on

Free kick to B.

AM at 2016-03-01 22:13:25

JB comes in with a rather casual flag signal to B. for a fk – the signal lacked conviction and looked casual – at this level you need to be positive, focussed and sharp in your signalling!

60

AM at 2016-03-01 22:11:32

Long 7 kicks Cook 3 in an accidental collision in the B. penalty area. FK to B.

We have just heard that Kevin Friend fainted in the Technical Area just before half time and again we would reiterate our hopes for a speedy return Kevin. Best wishes from all at YATR.com

Saints sub

AM at 2016-03-01 22:07:59

Austin 28 to be substituted and to be replaced by Pelle 19

58

AM at 2016-03-01 22:06:49

Good viewing angles and proximity to play being achieved by MD as JB correctly raises his flag for offside against Austin

56

AM at 2016-03-01 22:05:31

MD showing good movement and position as play moves towards his active AR – DID YOU NOTICE HOW HE MOVED TOWARDS HIS AR IN THAT LAST MOVEMENT OF PLAY?

53

AM at 2016-03-01 22:02:45

Throw in to S. and is then correctly awarded as a foul throw in  – now to be taken by B.

AM at 2016-03-01 21:54:47

FK to B. – MD will have had plenty of considerations at half time with Kevin`s accident and injury and he will now have to fully focus on the 2nd half.

Bournemouth to kick off 2nd half

AM at 2016-03-01 21:52:52

we are underway

Delay of 5 minutes to the start of the 2nd half

AM at 2016-03-01 21:52:06

We have just been advised that Kevin Friend has been taken to Hospital and that Dean Trevelan a qualified match official and who was a guest at the game will take over as 4th Official for the 2nd half.

We would all at YATR.com want to wish Kevin our very best wishes and for a speedy recovery.

Half time considerations

AM at 2016-03-01 21:44:42

A consideration for Mike Dean at HALF TIME will be to assess Kevin Friend and his injury – there will be the issue of probably finding another official to hold the board and then decide and confirm if Mike where to go down injured who would replace him either John Brooks or Marc Perry? all extra areas for a referee to consider and assess if Kevin cannot return for the 2nd half.

Half time summary

AM at 2016-03-01 21:41:35

From the outset of this derby game MD has quite clearly set out his game plan and that is quite simply to be consistent in his punishment / non punishment of free kicks. He has aided all this with his positive communication skills hand / arm signals, reading of play and communication with the players which has been such a key point in his management of the players. Both Assistants have been low key, all offside judgements have been correct such is Mike Dean`s overall control of this game. We have just heard that Kevin Friend has knocked his head in it what would appear to be an accidental collision within the Technical Area. We wish Kevin every good wish and that he is ok and not too serious.

Half time

AM at 2016-03-01 21:33:57

Half Time

1-0.

45

AM at 2016-03-01 21:33:29

Play is stopped as MD goes over to The Technical Areas and he has a word with JB – it would appear that Kevin Friend has knocked his head? – no additional time board is shown – play is restarted and then quickly the full time whistle is blown by MD.

43

AM at 2016-03-01 21:30:22

MD went quite deep at that last B. ck and decides no B. penalty kick with appeals for handball – good decision from MD – followed up with an offside against B.

42

AM at 2016-03-01 21:28:22

JB gets involved in the award of that fk to S. with a supportive flag signal which was appreciated by MD

AM at 2016-03-01 21:27:07

MD is taking up good viewing positions for dropping ball player judgements – foul or no foul

38

AM at 2016-03-01 21:26:03

FK to S. MD he has remained consistent in this area of his tactical approach – followed up by a fk to B. as Romeu who was careless is spoken to by MD WHO HAS A SMILE AND A CALMING WORD -good to see in the heat of a derby game

Handball against Saints

AM at 2016-03-01 21:22:58

How handball continues to be such a talking point in the game!

Saints sub

AM at 2016-03-01 21:20:04

3 off 8 on – change of formation by Koeman as he looks to get back in the game

31

AM at 2016-03-01 21:17:57

GOAL! Cook scores from the FK to make it 1-0

30

AM at 2016-03-01 21:17:01

FK to B. awarded by MD – there was no flag indication from JB which from his position and vicinity would have added to the teamwork ethic – that is all some S. players were moaning about

28

AM at 2016-03-01 21:15:07

No fk to B. correct – good judgement by MD

26

AM at 2016-03-01 21:13:49

Long penalised rightly for a foul on Daniels again good spot by MD. Followed up by a fk to S. MD has remained consistent in this area.

24

AM at 2016-03-01 21:11:03

FK to B. – Spray out for the management of this fk – also MD is doing plenty of talking to players to let them know why he has awarded the fk and he takes control of the fk

21

AM at 2016-03-01 21:09:23

Following that last advantage to S. MD then comes back and has a quiet word with Ward-Prowse to let him know he saw the offence and played advantage good refereeing

20

AM at 2016-03-01 21:06:58

Advantage to B. played by MD correct signal as well keep an eye on MD`s signals his technique is good and this adds to the communication he displays

17

AM at 2016-03-01 21:04:15

Appeals for handball against Romeu not penalised by MD who to be fair had the best view of anyone clear and unobstructed he felt not deliberate handball

15

AM at 2016-03-01 21:02:39

Careless challenge by Ritchie penalised by MD – WELL JUDGED and MD has a word with Ritchie

Referees communication

AM at 2016-03-01 20:59:29

We often talk about communication in the referees body language – well tonight so far we have seen positive hand / arm signals and a good reading of play to date

12

AM at 2016-03-01 20:57:56

MD showing a good spin and turn in that last attack for S.

11

AM at 2016-03-01 20:57:13

JB spotting a deflection in that last throw in to S. flag technique looked positive

9

AM at 2016-03-01 20:55:41

moving ball at that last ck to B. again alertness and focus by MD you cannot miss these areas as a referee

7

AM at 2016-03-01 20:53:24

ck to B. well spotted by MD – POSITIVE IN HIS SIGNAL AS WELL

4

AM at 2016-03-01 20:51:33

Good detection of handball by MD or was it Kevin Friend 4th official supporting there? either way Afobe penalised correctly

2

AM at 2016-03-01 20:47:55

Early pressure from B. – MD well positioned for that ck

1

AM at 2016-03-01 20:46:54

Early throw in for JB to B. follows up with a ck to B.

Mike Dean - Tonight`s Referee

AM at 2016-03-01 20:39:07

The PGMOL have appointed the very experienced referee in Mike Dean to take charge of this crucial game with both teams very much needing a win for different reasons. Southampton to kick start their astonishing season to date and Bournemouth will see this as a must win game to move away from the bottom of the table towards Premier League safety.
