Thanks for your contributions this afternoon and we look forward to your company for tomorrow’s game at 5.00pm between Australia and Spain.

Corner Belgium – game over. Referee has just the one big decision to have some self analysis about. Everyone has an opinion and mine is that it would have been difficult to sell and whilst there was some contact it was a genuine attempt to play the ball with my view being it was a correct call from a good position.his positional play had flaws particularly in the first half and I would have liked him to have moved in much quicker to administer the caution in front of the technical area. Law was surprisingly not applied at corner kicks – not in terms of grappling (which was non-existent) but the ball Utah of the arc! Final summary – he controlled the game but needs to be more dynamic if he gets more games.

Referee covered break with 75m speed run. Impressive in last minute of time allowed.

at 2014-06-22 18:48:41
Corner Belgium and only 3 minutes time allowed. How much do you think it should have been?

at 2014-06-22 18:47:25
In the last minute – Russia sub 11 on  for 19.

at 2014-06-22 18:46:19
Goal Belgium by Origi who came on as a sub – super sub!

at 2014-06-22 18:44:22
Hazard is on fire – the game has come alive in last 5 minutes!

at 2014-06-22 18:41:21
Hand ball Russia 6. Caution? Sub for Belgium. Spray can used and shot hits post.

at 2014-06-22 18:38:52
80 minutes gone and if either side wants to win they need to get a move on. Russia 22 (the sub) just fires wide. Best effort so far.

at 2014-06-22 18:37:01
Another good offside judgement by near side official.

at 2014-06-22 18:35:51
W = Whistle I = In to incident m = monitor then get Away. Wimawah!

at 2014-06-22 18:34:14
Ball outside arc at corner! When will they stop it?

at 2014-06-22 18:32:58
Yellow card Belgium 2 from in front of technical area. Referee ambled across to deliver the sanction but it should have been done more positively. Remember the song Wimawah!

at 2014-06-22 18:29:46
Great play from Russia but it only results in a corner taken again from outside the arc. Free kick to Russia foul by Hazard.

The far side assistant’s signals do not look positive. Compared to Cann and Mullarkey he is 2nd division. I look for the signal to be held for a consistent length of time to firmly indicate the throw direction and not to be signalled on the move. He looks sloppy to me!

at 2014-06-22 18:21:01
Sub Russia 2 off replaced by 22. The referee’s awareness should increase following the two subs as tactical changes can affect the pattern of play and the ref may need to adjust accordingly.

at 2014-06-22 18:17:52
Another penalty area incident but no penalty given as another injury stops play. Referee takes on fluids from the physio – sensible thinking!

at 2014-06-22 18:16:18
Offside judgement by Assistants has generally been very good but many have lowered their flags too quickly and not retained the flag to indicate the position of the restart. The exceptions were Messrs Cann and Mullarkey who demonstrated impressive techniques which were implemented in the UK when Paul Rejer was in charge of Assistant Referee. He is now working in America where I was delighted to meet him again at Dallas Cup 34 in 2013

at 2014-06-22 18:14:58
Sub Belgium 17 for 9. let’s hope he injects some life into the game.

at 2014-06-22 18:12:32
The ref has started to squeeze play more on the Assistant’s side  but who was checking that the ball was in the corner  arc? Why do players chest for just an inch or two? Yellow card Belgium 6 – more clumsy than malicious for me.

at 2014-06-22 18:07:56
The far side assistant has looked a bit unsure on a few incidents but he crabs we’ll and his offside judgement has been spot on. Foul by Russia 6 and double injury. Stops play again free kick to Belgium.

Second half ready to start and it is looking like a goal will be hard to find with both defences on top. How do you rate this referee? We believe that whilst Howard Webb was superb, the best performance so far was by American referee Mark Geiger. How referee standards have improved in the US since the influence of my good friend Brian Hall which has now been moved forward by former Premier League referee Peter Walton who took charge of the MLS referees over a year ago. Half time drinks with energy fluids to replace the liquid sweated out during the first half. The referee has worked hard but needs to concentrate more on getting closer to play than he is. His fitness level is impressive and he has balanced his control with his caution towards the end of the first half underlining his control.

at 2014-06-22 17:48:56
Open goal missed by Russia 9 with a minute to go for half-time. The referee will have already advised the 4th Official of the amount of Time Allowed. One minute is shown. Is it enough? At nil- nil the referee will minimise time and apart from the one penalty incident he has worked hard. Was it a penalty? How would you have sold that decision as on the replays it was a close call. No doubt the TV pundits will make a big thing about it but the touch on the ball by the defender sold it for me and it would have been harsh.

at 2014-06-22 17:39:54
Ian M has asked should ref stop play on a head injury or play advantage? My view is that player safety is paramount and play should stop immediately. Yellow card Russia 8 for a reckless challenge. Ian also thought it a penalty for Russia earlier in the game. A close call but for me it would have been harsh and I would back the referee who was in a good position.

at 2014-06-22 17:33:26
For referees working in tournament conditions there’s more to think about than just the game. It is the whole aspect of the tournament that needs full concentration. Thanks to all my good friends in Dallas I’ve been lucky to have almost 30 years of that experience refereeing in the premier youth tournament, the Dallas Cup. I’m sure many are watching this – so Howdy y’all and see you next year.

at 2014-06-22 17:31:44
His work rate and fitness look fine as he ran the full length of the field to make decisions in both penalty areas which were accepted as correct.sub Belgium 3 off – 5 on

TS at 2014-06-22 17:24:17
His positioning is giving me some slight concerns as he is more often than not further than the recommended 20m distance. It will be interesting if there is a bad challenge – whoops, he slipped and almost fell. Double head injury on 23 minutes not too serious.

TS at 2014-06-22 17:20:53
The referee will have done his homework on both teams in an attempt to be in total control. He’ll be aware of where his problems might arise and let’s hope that he will be able to get into the best viewing positions to judge incidents. He was criticised in his last game World Cup game for missing a red card offence on 81 minutes and he won’t want a repeat performance,

TS at 2014-06-22 17:17:27
Referee has managed a low-key 15 minutes with no challenges to his authority. His positions are a bit suspect in the ‘inside left channel’ but he hasn’t been hit by the ball ….yet!!

TS at 2014-06-22 17:14:21
Corner to Russia – no grappling to deal with. The Premier League have been too long In addressing this problem and it needs sorting for next season.

TS at 2014-06-22 17:10:21
Offside Belgium 8 – good signal and judgement by far side assistant.

TS at 2014-06-22 17:08:52
First foul of the game by Belgium 2 – no advantage correct free kick on 8 minutes.

TS at 2014-06-22 17:05:57
In the way of play in 4th minute – but the referee’s fitness levels are good and his patrol thoughtful. Remember that the tactical formations of the teams (4-4-2 or 5-3-2-1) have different positional requirements for the referee to get the best viewing angles without being in the way of play.

TS at 2014-06-22 17:03:13
Good to see him use an arm signal to indicate throw direction followed by a clear signal for the corner. He has a loping run and a fine sprint. Good awareness to stop play for the head injury.

TS at 2014-06-22 17:00:09
We’re underway and looking at the referee and his Assistants to try and gauge what his game plan is for this important game. You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression!

TS at 2014-06-22 16:55:58
Referee Brych and his team covered the match between Uruguay v Costa Rica on June 14th which resulted in 3 cautions and a Red Card, all to Uruguay players. Felix Brych also refereed the Europa League Final to acclaim and it looks like a good FIFA appointment for this all Europe clash. Good luck to all the officials and both teams for a great match played in the true spirit of the game.

Belgium v Russian is an eduction in summing up two schools of thought in the route to success. They met in the World Cup in the 2002 group stages and that was the last time they both qualified. Since then Belgium have been quietly building a national export business in quality players working abroad. Eleven of their squad play in the Premier League including captain Vincent Kompany. Only 3 of the squad are based in Belgium! By contrast, Russia are the only team to have all their squad playing in their own domestic league. It is a clash that should have FA chairman Greg Dyke making notes for future meetings!! This is the second match for both sides with Belgium winning and Russia drawing their first games so this game in the Estadio do Maracana in Rio de Janeiro is important to both teams. Former England boss Fabio Capella has turned Russia into a difficult team to beat. My only World Cup experience was as Linesman – before Assistant Referees were invented – in Belgium when they beat Greece 2 – 0 on 27th March 1985 (to qualify for the 1986 World Cup finals) with Keith Hackett (whose birthday is today) as referee.
