Atlanta United v Minnesota United in MLS

Atlanta United v Minnesota United in MLS

Commentary By: Sonia Denoncourt

FINAL SCORE: 2 - 3

SD at 2017-10-04 02:21:54

Today’s match was what we call a “REFEREE’s” match with many key decisions for the referee and few little for the ARs. The referee Villarreal had a lot to do today. A key moment was the YC given at the 30th minute. A game changing scenario. The intensity went up after this unfair challenge. Minnesota had nothing to lose and Atlanta is visibly disappointed in the result. The VAR only 1 review of the match was correct and the final decision accurate. The ARs ran the line well and no big issues raised, 1 offside only.

However, the club shall be sanctioned as the referee got hit by a water bottle, this is clearly not acceptable and I am sure consequences will follow. A though game for the ref, very physical challenges, 5 goals, 5 YC (Villalba 67′, Gressel 72′, Danladi 48′, Ramirez 90′, Molino 90’+6) and 1 RC. ATL GK #32.

The referee positioning and movement was good and he demonstrated very good fitness. He received some open criticism from the Atlanta coach at the end of the match. Best to them for the next match

This is not acceptable that fans are able throw water bottle at the ref..they must increase security and protect the referees in every game.

67

SD at 2017-10-04 01:37:06

GOAL! ATL # 15 Villabra, now 1-1

65

SD at 2017-10-04 01:34:05

good advantage by the ref for ATL, difficult call in a physical match

63

SD at 2017-10-04 01:32:37

VARs were first used in a FIFA competition at last December’s Club World Cup in Japan when the system – which can only be used for goals, penalty decisions, direct red cards and cases of mistaken identity – attracted considerable criticism.

Todays VAR is Silviu Petrescu (Canadian, PRO debut in 1986, very experienced with 122 games in MLS as of Dec 2016)

61

SD at 2017-10-04 01:31:18

After the VAR review, the ref gives a RC to ATL GK #32. he was the last player, DOGSO outside the penalty area. correct and now the GK is subsituted by #23 Tambakis. FK for MIN

58

SD at 2017-10-04 01:29:12

big challende outside the PA by the GK, this has to be a RC and DFK.  first VAR of the match. Oh no, someone threw water bottle at the ref. Upsetting

55

SD at 2017-10-04 01:25:30

MIN #9 is on the ground, fell on his own…. he twisted his ankle or a strategy to waste time as they are leading 1-0

51

SD at 2017-10-04 01:22:08

good no call from AR2 as the player in offside position stopped running and did not participate in the play. Good no call!

50

SD at 2017-10-04 01:19:49

The referee has been runnning well, a bit of a narrow diagonal but good mobility and movement. He is fit.

48

SD at 2017-10-04 01:18:14

GOAL! MIN #9 wow what a surprising shot, top corner! his 8th goal of the season

47

SD at 2017-10-04 01:16:30

good start for ATL with few shots on goal. ATL needs to win to get up in the ranking

Football kickoff 2nd half

SD at 2017-10-04 01:10:55

Half-time: So far, we have seen a pretty physical game. few good goals chances on both sides. The big decisions were the 2 YC given (especially the YC at 30th min which could have been a red straight card).

ATL possession of the ball is 61.8% so far. MIN is seeking a real revenge from last match loss 6-1

30

SD at 2017-10-04 00:42:13

Yellow CardMIN # 5 no attempt to play the balll, in his defending area. He pull the card immediately, maybe a bit too fast as the tackle was high on the knee. first big tackle of the match. He could sell a RC as well ! Harsh!

29

SD at 2017-10-04 00:38:45

in response….FK to MIN, about 30 yards away

28

SD at 2017-10-04 00:37:48

Foul MIN, yes simple FK, no card necessary

27

SD at 2017-10-04 00:37:01

Offside: first of the match against ATL. coming back in to play

26

SD at 2017-10-04 00:35:46

As a reminder:

Key points to consider for a handball: Natural or unnatural position, hands on the body, additional movement, deliberate action, taking a risk or making the body bigger to cover more space, promising attack and disciplinary sanction = lead to a good decision

24

SD at 2017-10-04 00:34:17

no handball called by the ref in the pk area. correct call as the player was near the shot and did not deliberately handle the ball as he turned away

22

SD at 2017-10-04 00:31:35

Foul ATL #2, simple FK

18

SD at 2017-10-04 00:29:22

good preventive refereeing from Ref to delay restart of the throw-in as the def was hit on the head by the ball

17

SD at 2017-10-04 00:27:28

challenge! MIN #14 used his elbow. FK allowed for ATL. the crowd want a YC and possibly so. the game is still young!

14

SD at 2017-10-04 00:24:44

ref good call, foul  by MIN and a quick restart allowed

SD at 2017-10-04 00:21:56

9

SD at 2017-10-04 00:19:38

well played by MIN shot over the goal. ref in good position, easy signal and decision

7

SD at 2017-10-04 00:16:42

Assistant Referee 1: Logan Brown (Pro debut in 2015, 15 games as of Dec 2016 in MLS). Nick Uranga (Pro debut in 2016, only 2 games in MLS since Dec 2016). good concentration and positioning

SD at 2017-10-04 00:14:31

Ref good sprinting to close the gap on the breakaway for Atlanta, 1st real opportunity

3

SD at 2017-10-04 00:13:15
