A busy game for Mike in terms of the number of cards issued, but none were questionable. Very quiet, easy games for the assistants. Those are the ones we dream of!

GT at 2014-08-23 14:37:41
And that’s it…we end 0-0. Despite the six cautions and one dismissal, today’s was a quiet, and fairly uneventful game. Both sides will feel they could have taken the spoils but in the end shared the points. Although Villa are probably the happier as they remain unbeaten and have four points from a possible six, whereas Newcastle are still to register a goal this season

GT at 2014-08-23 14:35:23
Here comes the rain again with a minute to go

The crowd make their own entertainment by refusing to throw back the ball !!

Cissokho is in considerable pain as he lands awkwardly following an aerial challenge

Good support from assistant Brooks as he leads Deano into a handball….and a caution for WeimannYellow Card

GT at 2014-08-23 14:08:25
Second caution of the game, this time for Senderos as he brings down the Newcastle man. To be clear….definitely a yellow, never a red card Yellow Card

GT at 2014-08-23 14:06:45
Good advantage played by our referee

GT at 2014-08-23 14:05:54
Villa begin to press for a goal…

GT at 2014-08-23 14:04:27
Deano will be pleased to see the only player on a caution leave the field of play to be replaced by Sanchez. That takes away the chance of a second yellow, which no referee enjoys administering

GT at 2014-08-23 14:02:28
The Villa keeper gets the benefit of a free kick when there seemed very little in the challenge

GT at 2014-08-23 14:01:25
Cabella wastes a great chance as he fails to pull back a cross to a team mate

GT at 2014-08-23 14:00:36
Deano speaks to Agbonlahor following a push into an opponent’s back. He’s just trying to keep the Villa man calm

GT at 2014-08-23 13:57:46
Yet another Newcastle effort goes wide of the upright. Is a goal coming?

GT at 2014-08-23 13:56:25
Good wait-and-see from the assistant as he raises the flag for an offside against Villa

GT at 2014-08-23 13:55:34
Dean right on top of a strong challenge by Colback, and rules the challenge as a fair one when other referees may have cautioned the Newcastle man

GT at 2014-08-23 13:53:48
Richardson (Villa) shows that trailing-leg challenges can be made successfully, as he takes the ball fairly

GT at 2014-08-23 13:52:37
Chance goes begging for the Magpies as a header is tipped over the bar

GT at 2014-08-23 13:52:02
First caution of the game as N’Zogbia takes down Cabella. Naughty challenge on the Newcastle man’s achilles tendon Yellow Card

GT at 2014-08-23 13:48:49
A small point but I would like to see assistant Long follow the Newcastle attacker all the way through to the Villa ‘keeper as he chases down a back pass. Otherwise, he is in danger of missing a challenge

GT at 2014-08-23 13:46:30
The second half is under way. Let’s hope for goals early on to liven this one up…

GT at 2014-08-23 13:41:13
13 attempts on target in the first half between both sides, but only two of them on target – and both of those were from the away team. Is this Newcastle’s opportunity to end their run of 10 consecutive Premier League games without a win? GT at 2014-08-23 13:31:55
The end of the first half. The game stays at 0-0 and needs a goal to spark it into life

GT at 2014-08-23 13:29:59
The heavens open at Villa Park which means the ball will zip along the surface now. Deano will be wary of players using this as an excuse for sliding into opponents

GT at 2014-08-23 13:28:07
Not a great deal in that challenge as Hutton stays down holding his leg

GT at 2014-08-23 13:26:16
Well done Mike for not being conned by Cabella (Newcastle) as he fell to the ground unnecessarily whilst clutching his face

GT at 2014-08-23 13:24:55
Good call by assistant Long – no offside to be given as the Villa forward was not involved in active play

GT at 2014-08-23 13:23:09
As another simple pass goes out of play, our officials will be pleased their performance is much better than that of the other two teams out there

GT at 2014-08-23 13:20:00
Our officials will have one eye on half time now, and will be hoping it stays quiet for the last 10 minutes

GT at 2014-08-23 13:15:04
A third of the game has gone and it’s flawless so far for our officials

GT at 2014-08-23 13:12:17
The temperature of the game has gone up a notch as Villa press for the opening goal

GT at 2014-08-23 13:10:51
Simple chance wasted by Newcastle. Should have been a goal

GT at 2014-08-23 13:08:29
Mike is right on top of the game today, as he spots another little nudge and correctly awards a free kick to Villa

GT at 2014-08-23 13:06:47
….but wasted by Colback

GT at 2014-08-23 13:06:28
Another excellent free kick given by Deano as he looked for advantage but nothing came for Newcastle. This is in a dangerous place…

GT at 2014-08-23 13:03:47
Lovely touch from all the supporters as they applaud in the 17th minute for the Newcastle Utd supporter who sadly lost his life recently

GT at 2014-08-23 13:02:10
No advantage there, and Deano correctly waited see if one would come before he awarded the free kick to Villa. Out comes the magic spray….

GT at 2014-08-23 12:59:27
Excellent call by Mike for a foul by N’Zogbia.  He knew what he was doing there as he left a little something on his opponent

GT at 2014-08-23 12:57:55
Completely accidental injury to Vlaar as he twists his knee

GT at 2014-08-23 12:54:34
First real chance of the game as N’Zogbia puts a header over the bar

GT at 2014-08-23 12:53:37
Correct not to award offside as the free kick was delivered as the player was not involved in active play

GT at 2014-08-23 12:52:51
Very good decision to award to free kick to Newcastle. Agbonlahor made a back for his opponent

GT at 2014-08-23 12:50:28
Good, steady opening 5 minutes for the officials. This is the kind of start to a match we dream of!

GT at 2014-08-23 12:48:27
Good spot for the throw in by Mike. It took a slight deflection

GT at 2014-08-23 12:46:00
Well done Mike… First decision – players encroaching at the kick-off so let’s have it taken correctly

12.45pmGT at 2014-08-23 12:42:47
It’s almost time for kick-off … here’s wishing the ball runs kindly for Mike and his team…

GT at 2014-08-23 12:25:01
As for our other teams today… Aston Villa have their first home game of the new season today having registered a 0-1 away win at Stoke on the opening weekend, with a 50th minute goal from Andreas Weimann. Whilst the club still remains up for sale, the management duo of Paul Lambert and Roy Keane have turned to experience in the hope of stabilising Villa this season with seasoned additions such as Philippe Senderos and Aly Cissokho. Villa will feel that Newcastle are there for the taking today after their opponents opened up the new season with a 0-2 home defeat to champions Manchester City. The Magpies looked lacking in a cutting edge upfront last week and must wish they had the embarrassment of attacking options their Manchester opponents can call upon. Their fanatical travelling support will be hoping for a more clinical approach to today’s match. What are your views on the three teams today? Who will take the spoils in this one? Good afternoon and welcome to another YATR live Refcam. Today we are at Villa Park where 46 year-old Mike Dean takes charge of his and the Premier League’s second 12.45pm kick-off of the season between Aston Villa and Newcastle United. Mike is in his 15th season as a Select Group official during which time he has shown 1221 yellow and 64 red cards in 337 matches. He took charge of the new season’s opener last week at Old Trafford which saw Manchester United lose at home to Swansea City – a game which we also covered here on YATR Refcam. For 84 minutes Mike was having a good game with the vast majority of his decisions being correct and justifiable. However the final six minutes were not so comfortable when he failed to spot a red card offence by Fellaini for United and a second yellow card for Shelvey of Swansea. Unfortunately, as we all know, you can be having the game of your life for which you will receive no credit, and then all of that good work is undone when you miss critical incidents. Concentration is the key and Mike will be looking to improve on last week’s performance. His has two different assistants with him today in John Brooks and Simon Long. Brooks, who is often paired up with Dean, is somewhat of a controversial figure. YATR followers will remember he hit national headlines last year and was suspended after telling Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott he should thank City supporters following a game in which they had paid £62 to watch him play. There is an interesting and unusual appointment of 4th Official today, which sees Martin Atkinson keeping the bench warm – he was in the middle last weekend for a home defeat for the Geordies. I hope the Newcastle officials felt he had a reasonable game as otherwise his ears could be ringing with complaints about his performance by the time today’s game ends. Is it wise to appoint a match official to the same team in consecutive weekends? What are your views? Get in touch on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at info@youare the ref.com
