Summary of Match Officials Performance

AM at 2015-08-14 21:53:39

My overall summary would be as follows:

Mike Dean has overall managed this game in a proactive and positive manner – he ended the game with 4 yellow cards and my only observation here would be that I was surprised that he did not bring out his yellow card earlier in the game (we would have certainly seen this last season) could it be early season or a change in his management of these yellow card situations this season?

MD was overall consistent in his judgement and award of challenges, positive management of players seen and time issues ie he kept MU players moving towards the end of this game as they looked to hold on to their narrow advantage.

The Key moment was as we discussed at half time and the outcome was that there should have been a penalty kick to Villa following a clear shirt pull by Darmain 36 who pulled down Richards 4 of Villa at a ck in the 38th minute. This game will be judged by the non award of a penalty kick to Villa and it is these big decisions that Match Officials are judged by.

As for our Assistant Referees – SB has not had 1 offside to award and he kept his flag down correctly on the MU goal. Good support at a free kick to MU 2nd half.

SL has had 8 offsides to award and these again were all correct there was just the one incident (63rd min) when I felt that he could and should of supported MD when 23 of Villa committed a reckless challenge on a MU player when a yellow card would also have been correct as viewed by the replay, but not even a free kick was awarded?

As for Lee Mason he dealt with all matters and kept low key just what was required on the night.

ck to Villa good signal by SB – again there is some grappling prior to the ck I hope that this is not back this season? we need to see some preventative action early on

AM at 2015-08-14 21:19:34

Villa sub 17 off 24 on

76

AM at 2015-08-14 21:19:02

Free kick to Villa and Rooney shows his dissent at this decision. MD feels it better to get on with play rather than enter into a debate, could have been a good time for a public word with Rooney to show to all that MD is in charge and what about some respect for our referee!

73

AM at 2015-08-14 21:16:02

Good non offside flag SL

Yellow Card21 MU CORRECT

72

AM at 2015-08-14 21:14:57

Another late challenge close to MDs position a free kick to MU awarded with no further action taken?

19 Villa late on MU player, no yellow card in this situation? my only thought here is that last season MD would have shown the yellow card? has he changed his approach this season? what are your thoughts?

63

23 of Villa has committed a reckless challenge and a free kick to MU should have been awarded SL would have had a better view but a ck is given. Replays show the challenge was reckless a yellow card would have been correct in this situation

61

AM at 2015-08-14 21:03:04

Free kick to Villa MD is keeping a close view on matters I feel a yellow card is not far away though.

52

AM at 2015-08-14 20:53:45

Thanks Terry Bucknall for your thoughts on the penalty kick to Villa. You wondered why it was not given? I made reference to the view MD had by looking at the corner kicker and maybe his gaze has missed it? only he will know but we need to tackle grappling in the penalty area

Early offside for SL against Rooney as Villa step up

2nd half underway

AM at 2015-08-14 20:47:06

MD blows his whistle for the 2nd half, we are again early in the season (similar to last season) looking again at grappling in the penalty area with our referees needing to take positive action. This is an area that referees in the MLS games that we have covered here on REFCAM are extremely proactive upon

Half Time Summary

AM at 2015-08-14 20:42:30

Mike Dean has managed the event very well overall as highlighted in my blog. I think he has shown a sharpness in his 2nd game tonight. His management of players has been first class and they have shown a real respect for him..

Good early management for those fouls that warranted a quiet word and the players responded to MD. Just the one KMI which I felt that a penalty kick to Villa should have been awarded. I was looking to MDs position for this one kmi and his viewing angle which may have not been the best on this occasion, should have been better, he was looking and retaining his gaze at the corner kick, when focus in the penalty area would have enhanced and picked up this penalty kick award.

Both ARs have supported MD well. Defensively MU are pushing up and have caught Villa offside on 5 occasions. Whilst Villa have adopted a fairly deep defensive line and SB has not indicated an offside as yet with a good non flag on the MU goal.

Throw in to Villa good arm / hand signal from MD

1 MIN ADDED TIME

44

AM at 2015-08-14 20:29:31

As we approach half time the only big talking point is the non award of a penalty kick to Villa. Key decisions are what games are reviewed and measured upon. We will review this incident I am sure at half time with our experts. But, keep your views coming in.

What are your thoughts on the shirt pull by 36 MU ON 4 VILLA?

38

AM at 2015-08-14 20:25:19

From the corner kick Villa are extremely unlucky not to be awarded a penalty kick following a clear shirt pull by Darmian 36 on Richards 4 of Villa just seen on replays

38

AM at 2015-08-14 20:23:44

ck to Villa as MD retains a position wide of the penalty area

34

AM at 2015-08-14 20:20:09

With nearly 35 minutes gone MD is managing the event well supported by his colleagues who are taking his lead well.

Offsides awarded SB – 0 against MU

SL – 3 against Villa

31

AM at 2015-08-14 20:17:53

A bit of a tangle from 2 players as play moves away offside from SL replays show a tangle involving 17 of Villa and 11 of MU WITH BOTH PLAYERS ON THE GROUND AND A TANGLE OF FEET AS BOTH PLAYERS ATTEMPT TO GET TO THEIR FEET.

28:07

AM at 2015-08-14 20:14:50

GOAL!

0-1

Replays again show a good judgement of not offside from SB

27

AM at 2015-08-14 20:12:33

Again another good non offside flag from SB

25

AM at 2015-08-14 20:11:09

Throw in from SL to MU did you notice the correct height and retention of the flag? good practice here

23

AM at 2015-08-14 20:08:55

No MU offside correct from SB Villa player in the middle keeping the MU player on side

21

AM at 2015-08-14 20:07:09

MD is putting in a good acceleration as Villa break down the far touchline

19

AM at 2015-08-14 20:05:33

No free kick to MU and a shake of the head from MD to confirm given from a close viewing position

18

AM at 2015-08-14 20:04:28

2nd free kick to MU Gana careless again another stronger blast of the whistle from MD

16

AM at 2015-08-14 20:02:43

Advantage MU correct signal from MD, KEEPS THE GAME FLOWING

15

AM at 2015-08-14 20:01:44

More of a blast on the whistle for that free kick to MU against Richards a word with Richards to calm down, good refereeing here, spray out and defensive wall retreat 9.15m

5 MINUTES TO KICK OFF

AM at 2015-08-14 19:40:26

There have been a number of high profile offside errors some of which have been highlighted here on REFCAM in week 1. Why?

this is an area that we will need to look closely at tonight when we see FIFA. A/R Simon Bennett a referee whom I coached for 4 years at level 3 & 2B he showed great potential then and was one that I predicted to be destined for the very top. He is now refereeing on the National Conference List at level 2A. Simon Long is an experienced A/R at this level and is seen as a safe pair of hands. The 4th Official is Lee Mason who has been a referee at this level for many years and it will be interesting to view his management of the technical areas in view of the PGMOL management instructions to match officials regarding technical areas in the summer.

Heavy traffic on route to Villa Park late crowd congestion could be a consideration for our match referee?

AM at 2015-08-14 19:34:31

The PGMOL Management Team have certainly taken the decision in the summer to promote and give opportunities to Football League Referees with Simon Hooper taking charge last weekend in the Norwich v Crystal Palace game followed by tomorrow when we see Paul Tierney, who has just one Premier League appearance behind him, has been appointed to take charge of another newly-promoted team – Watford – in their home game against West Brom on Saturday.

There has been a lot of debate regarding the appointment of 2 Football League Referees in the first 2 weekends of The FA Premier League Season, but what are your thoughts?

In News from around the World. The Headlines are “Another surprise following a largely good opening weekend”

Pre Match Build up at Villa Park

AM at 2015-08-14 19:24:34

Tonight sees the very experienced referee in Mike Dean taking charge of his 2nd Premier League game this week.

Guy Beale was REF CAMs Commentator for Monday Night’s game WBA and Manchester City and he quoted at the end of his BLOG the following about Mike Deans performance…

BUT …… for me, there were just a few times in the second half when he let his high standards drop a little. I was left with the feeling that although he looked physically fit, I am not sure that he always seemed “match fit” at times. By that I mean that there were a few decisions which left me surprised instead of totally supportive.

https://you-are-the-ref.com/ref-cam/west-bromwich-albion-v-manchester-city/

This is a key area for us to view tonight and throughout this game please let us have your thoughts on how you feel that Mike Dean has addressed his “match fitness”?

Pre Match Build up at Villa Park

AM at 2015-08-14 19:19:19

A very good evening and welcome to this live REF CAM Commentary game. Today in the Midlands we have seen heavy rain all day and this will make the Villa playing surface have extra zip and this will be a consideration for all Match Officials in their pre match preparations for this game. Which sees the up and coming Aston Villa with all their clear out of 11 players (including C Benteke at 32.5 million to Liverpool) by Tim Sherwood who brings in 9 new players with J Ayew at 10 million being their most expensive purchase. As for Manchester United they have also been very busy in the transfer market as this summer’s major signings include Memphis Depay, Matteo Darmain, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and Sergio Romero.

Those to leave Old Trafford, include Angel Di Maria, Robin van Persie, Rafael, Tom Cleverley, Angelo Henriquez and the expensive loanee Radamel Falcao. Manchester United are many peoples favourite to be Champions this season. What are your thoughts?
