Aston Villa v Manchester City

AM at 2014-10-04 19:40:37

Match Summary –
There can be no doubt that Chris Foy has managed this game well and overall he has gained the respect of the players in his management of this game. Whilst in my BLOG I have mentioned that I would like to see him increase his acceleration and movement particularly as play quickly breaks and to also adopt a wider position as play breaks wide on the diagonal as he tended to get in a fairly static at times central position. There were no key match incidents to report although there was the incorrect free kick award first half to Man City in an attacking position. The only yellow card of the game was correctly shown to the 11 of Man City with some early words of advice offered in the 5th minute when this same player was careless in his challenge on an opponent. Please look at my half time summary regarding the process / management of the yellow card. Ball out of play judgements looked to be correct when awarded by the referee and he led his Assistants throughout on the majority of decision making activities. AR Harry Lennard had one incorrect offside judgement as mentioned at half time with a correct judgement 2nd half when a Villa Player was active in his challenge on g/k Hart. Richard West gave a performance in my opinion below that what is expected at this level. One incorrect offside judgement 1st half, no support to the referee with a free kick directly in front of him – you have to be seen to support the referee here as players will say “well he hasn`t flagged ref” with regards to the incorrect award of a throw in to Man City well this is down to basics and a lack of concentration. You may well say “well it is only a throw in” well let me say what if a goal comes directly from this award then we go back to the incorrect throw in award. 4th Official Craig Pawson looked composed, fully focussed and I am sure a fully supportive via the comms to Chris Foy.

As the Referee Chris Foy blows his whistle to signal full time and an away win for Man City 0-2.

My full time summary will follow hold on…………..

AM at 2014-10-04 19:20:47

As play moves closer to the corner flag I would like to see Chris Foy quickly move closer to active play to add credibility in his award.

AM at 2014-10-04 19:19:17

Attempts on target Villa 1 Man City 7 show the dominance from Man City particularly in the 2nd half

AM at 2014-10-04 19:18:23

Villa get the throw in this time and a quick word from the Villa Player to AR Richard West no doubt giving him some advice following his recent incorrect throw in award with a smile from AR Richard West in return.

4 minutes added time are shown by the 4th Official

AM at 2014-10-04 19:16:16

16 Aguero scores for Man City to make it 0-2

AM at 2014-10-04 19:14:09

Man City now keeping possession and Villa trying to chase the game as we enter the final 3 minutes and added time

AM at 2014-10-04 19:13:14

Advantage played by Chris Foy clear signal not too long to Man City one of the few opportunities in today`s game

AM at 2014-10-04 19:11:15

Man City take the lead 42 of Man City scores with the ball just creeping inside the Villa far post. Now for an interesting final 7 minutes and added time

Man City Sub 21 off 15 on 4th Official Craig Pawson looking composed and focussed in his duties

AM at 2014-10-04 19:08:19

A clear error from AR Richard West when he awards a Man City throw in when it was a clear throw in to Villa deflection off Zabaletta concentration is lacking here. What if a goal comes from this decision? than we go back to the incorrect throw in award.

AM at 2014-10-04 19:04:39

Free kick to Villa, Milner careless on Villa player, Chris Foy has kept his gaze and looked just after the ball was played forward. Good to just hold your gaze when a challenge goes in late on a player.

AM at 2014-10-04 19:02:59

A quick break from Villa results in a throw in with Chris Foy using his experience to make the judgement from a distance. I would just like to see him more in view on the TV SCREEN

AM at 2014-10-04 19:00:32

From a good cross from Man City – Villa deflect the ball for a corner kick and a good save from Guzan

AM at 2014-10-04 18:58:26

In the final 20 minutes with quick breaks in play Chris Foy will now be particularly tested with his acceleration and movement.

Villa Sub – 28 off 7 on and 18 off 40 on

AM at 2014-10-04 18:55:31

Positive clear hand / arm signal by Chris Foy Villa throw in

Which way do you think this game will go? will it stay goal less?

Man City sub 10 off 6 on as Man City chase this game

AM at 2014-10-04 18:50:49

Benteke Vliia not flagged offside the position in a good viewing position.

Man City free kick foul on Silva 21 by 23 Villa. Out comes the spray again, good management seen here again by the Referee Chris Foy

AM at 2014-10-04 18:48:20

We are now entering the final 30 minutes, key moments ahead and a Villa sub 10 off 20 on see the tempo change now.

Man City offside

AM at 2014-10-04 18:46:49

Free kick to Villa right in front of the Assistant Richard West with no supportive flag seen here? this is where Assistants need to be seen to be offering support. Are we now going the other way when we see an experienced referee in charge tonight? remember the support Craig Pawson had at West Ham from his Assistant Referees from the 1st minute flag free kick and goal to West Ham.

Man City offside

Villa offside – replays show correct from AR Lennard

AM at 2014-10-04 18:42:51

Stoppage in play good empathy seen from Chris Foy to allow treatment to player.

Man City sub 25 off 18 on

AM at 2014-10-04 18:41:52

AR Lennard correct to flag offside as the Villa player is challenging Hart Man City for the ball, although Chris Foy correctly allows play to continue as Hart catches the ball and there is no need for a stoppage in play

AM at 2014-10-04 18:39:36

Going back to the incorrect offside awards in the 1st half my concern here is…. Are Assistants now taking the easy option of flagging for offside when if in doubt they should be keeping the flag down…

AM at 2014-10-04 18:36:29

Man City hit the post and from a quick break Villa have a chance at the other end, saved by Hart g/k Man City. The referee is working hard to keep up with play.

AM at 2014-10-04 18:34:12

Good to see 4th Official Craig Pawson focussed on the field of play rather than worrying too much on the occupants of the Technical Areas. His view is ideal to offer advice if required.

AM at 2014-10-04 18:32:00

One thing that I have noticed during early FA Premier Games is the reduction in the use of yellow cards for dissent whether verbally or dissent by action. My question to you is why is this?
1. Can you name a player that you have seen cautioned for dissent?
2. Are the referees managing this more and or tolerating?
3. Or do you think there has been a reduction in disputing decisions by players?
4. Has there been a greater respect for referees this season?

The referee Chris Foy blows his whistle to commence the 2nd half

AM at 2014-10-04 18:30:07

Half Time Summary-

Positives – Chris Foy has managed the Players well and overall controlled this game to date good early stoppages and calming with words for 11 of Manchester City as he was later to show him the yellow card following a reckless challenge on a Villa Player.

Negatives – I mentioned in my BLOG 27th minute incorrect award of a free kick to Man City if a goal had been scored then the focus would be back to the incorrect award of the free kick. I would like to see Chris increase his acceleration and movement and try to adopt a wider diagonal as the above free kick award highlighted. Take your time on the issue and management of the yellow card let the player know a caution is a calming down method as is an opportunity to let the player know 1 further yellow card offence and he will be sent off.
Both Assistants have each made an incorrect offside judgement when in each case a good attacking opportunity has been lost, their position looked to be correct it would be mental concentration and judgement that has let them down here. Otherwise supportive to the referee with ball out of play judgements and no need for either to get involved with the award of free kicks.
In the 2nd half keep a close view on both positive and negative areas that I have raised for the Match Officials.

AM at 2014-10-04 18:18:06

The Referee blows his whistle for half time and from final pressure just before half time by Man City, Villa will be pleased for the break.
Half time – O-O

AM at 2014-10-04 18:16:31

Corner kick awarded to MANCHESTER CITY following a deflection from a Villa player, with a further corner kick, and 2 further corner kicks as Man City put on the pressure. 1 minute added time

AM at 2014-10-04 18:14:17

Chris Foy has again to make a quick movement to avoid being hit by the ball once again in a fairly central area of play

AM at 2014-10-04 18:12:11

Manchester City Player incorrectly flagged offside by AR Harry Lennard. When then ball was played forward he looked to be in the correct position. It would be his mental concentration at the moment the ball was played forward by a Manchester City Player. So 2 Offside`s have now been incorrectly flagged offside and the paying spectators have lost moments to see what the possible outcomes may have been if there haD NOT BEEN INCORRECT STOPPAGES IN PLAY.

AM at 2014-10-04 18:08:34

Careless foul by Baker Villa, out comes the spray again. Management of the free kick by the referee Chris Foy is good and it just shows what an effective tool for the referees it has been. Why not use in the Football League see Keith Hackett`s article on for more information .

AM at 2014-10-04 18:05:10

Stats coming up… so far no shots on goal and 1 offside incorrectly awarded against Aston Villa

AM at 2014-10-04 18:03:09

Throw in to Aston Villa correctly awarded by Chris Foy after a deflection off a Man City Player as the ball left the field of play

AM at 2014-10-04 18:00:39

Going back to the free kick that I just mentioned, in an attacking position for Man City if a goal had been scored then all the focus would be back at that incorrect award of the free kick. This is why movement, position and mental concentration are absolutely key to retain throughout the full duration of the game

AM at 2014-10-04 17:57:56

Free kick to Man City incorrectly awarded by Chris Foy as 11 of Man City lost his footing, no foul, spray out for the 1st time

AM at 2014-10-04 17:56:08

11 Kolorav Manchester City reckless on Hutton and he is correctly shown a yellow card, he will now need to be careful for the remainder of this game. I just felt that this was an opportunity for Chris Foy to take his time and slow things down. Speak with the player and remind him of the need to be careful for the remainder of the game

AM at 2014-10-04 17:53:15

Offside from AR Richard West replays show that this was an incorrect judgement as the Villa Player was onside when the ball was played.

AM at 2014-10-04 17:52:16

Very quick break from Manchester City with the referee Chris Foy working hard to keep up with this quick break, he is some distance from play.

AM at 2014-10-04 17:50:49

Clear positive throw in signal by AR Richard West although disputed by Manchester City

AM at 2014-10-04 17:48:43

A key requirement of the Assistant Referee`s role is Offside and to remain IN LINE WITH THE 2ND REARMOST DEFENDER AT ALL TIMES. Harry Lennard is achieving this in the first 18 minutes of this game.

AM at 2014-10-04 17:46:04

Good in field movement and crabbing seen from AR Harry Lennard far side touchline

AM at 2014-10-04 17:45:03

The Referee Chris Foy is currently taking a fairly central and narrow diagonal, I would like to see him use the width more and come wider on the diagonal as play moves particularly towards the penalty areas

AM at 2014-10-04 17:41:51

Kolarov of Man City hits the post, it took a deflection off a Aston Villa Player so throw in to Man City is the correct outcome

AM at 2014-10-04 17:39:02

Good clear and positive flag signal from AR Harry Lennard throw in to Villa

AM at 2014-10-04 17:38:02

Careless challenge by Kolorav 11 of Manchester City on Aston Villa Player. The Referee Chris Foy has chosen to publicly speak to this player with an early reminder to this player of his actions.

AM at 2014-10-04 17:34:46

The Referee in the early moments gets caught up in play in the central area by being too close to play and in the wrong position. A free kick is then awarded to Manchester City

AM at 2014-10-04 17:32:58

It will be interesting to see how our Match Referee Chris Foy deals with Grappling in today`s game, how will he prevent it? I wonder what his game plan will be?
