Arsenal v Manchester City

Arsenal v Manchester City

Commentary By: Rob Harris

FINAL SCORE: 2 - 1

RH at 2015-12-21 23:02:46

This was a pleasing result for Andre Marriner and his team, he managed the game well and without doubt played his part in this attacking game. I thought he risked overplaying his hand with advantage on a couple of occasions, the double foul on Campbell and the risky  Arsenal defensive third advantage being the cases in point. This Referee does leave me asking at times, ‘why don’t you home in on attacking third incidents?’ During the first hour he seemed to hang back but in the last part of the game he followed his nose to make great decisions as Toure, Sterling and Otamendi all went down in the Arsenal penalty area, all were viewed from close range and all calls were spot on, the Otamendi/Giroud incidents being the best call, why don’t you do that all of the time Andre? His recognition of offences  and management of cards was superb, the card count being just two, well done! Both Assistants were really solid, no offside drama and other than a missed free kick by John Brooks, both gave good support. Its good to report a good night for the lads, well done all

Summary to follow

RH at 2015-12-21 22:50:52

Arsenal keep City penned into their own half, all legal stuff!

RH at 2015-12-21 22:48:44

A minimum of 4 minutes added time!

RH at 2015-12-21 22:47:57

Giroud just gets a touch on the ball Otamendi closes in, no penalty as the Referee is superbly placed, its on those decisions that a whole evening’s work can rest! well done!

RH at 2015-12-21 22:45:33

As City pass their way through the Arsenal defence, there’s always a risk of a careless challenge, concentration is key here as Arsenal get bodies behind the ball

RH at 2015-12-21 22:42:17

We’ve got plenty of great Christmas action for you! On Boxing day we cover the South Coast game at St Mary’s when Southampton play Arsenal at 19.45. On Monday 28th December we’re covering an intriguing game when Manchester United host Chelsea at 17.30, not much managerial or Player power speculation surrounding that game then! Then on Tuesday 29th December we’re looking at two of the Premierships most successful sides this season when leaders Leicester host Manchester City at 19.45. The following evening Wednesday 30th , Sunderland will be desperate for the points when they entertain Liverpool again at 19.45

RH at 2015-12-21 22:41:58

The Referee will have to be wise in his use of advantage in these final minutes, he cannot risk the level of control that he has built up!

RH at 2015-12-21 22:40:22

The Referee and Assistants will have to work hard here as a grandstand finish looks on!

RH at 2015-12-21 22:39:28

GOAL!What a superb goal from Toure, game back on!

RH at 2015-12-21 22:36:35

That was a close call Nevas was played, difficult to say whether John Brooks was right or wrong there, TV replay was inconclusive

RH at 2015-12-21 22:32:54

The tempo levelling out at the moment as the impact of the City substitutes wears off!

RH at 2015-12-21 22:30:40

TV Replays confirming that the Referee was correct with both of City penalty shouts involving Toure and Sterling. well done!

RH at 2015-12-21 22:29:05

As Sterling goes to ground the Referee is only yards away and kills it by waving the challenge away, spot on! that’s what I mean by great final third positioning!

RH at 2015-12-21 22:25:55

The Referee just losing concentration and getting too close to play just then in midfield, that a pity because his reading of play and 180 viewing of the game has been a strength in this game

RH at 2015-12-21 22:22:54

The Referee got lucky in that last Arsenal attack, he played an advantage to the home team in their own defensive third, play broke down and they got the ball back and mounted an attack, I’m all for attacking play but that just taking risks that you don’t need to!

RH at 2015-12-21 22:19:52

Good Refereeing at that last Arsenal free kick, as Andre Marriner took his time with the restart to take some heat out of the game, it seems to have worked!

RH at 2015-12-21 22:17:57

The tempo’s rising as both teams go on the attack!

RH at 2015-12-21 22:16:43

Good advantage by the Referee following a foul on Bellerin

RH at 2015-12-21 22:15:59

Good offside call from John Brooks as Arsenal hold the line and Aguero is offside direct from the ball in

RH at 2015-12-21 22:15:06

Giroud and Mangala certainly testing the quality of the stitching on each others shirts in that last Arsenal attack and corner!

RH at 2015-12-21 22:13:29

With City pressing for a goal to get back in the game, its much more open at the moment as both teams counter attack!

RH at 2015-12-21 22:11:52

Ramsey rightly penalised for impeding silva!

RH at 2015-12-21 22:07:35

There was a challenge earlier on Ozil near to the City penalty should drawn a more proactive approach from the Referee who should have been closing in on the incident, ok it wasn’t a foul, but the Referees in our game are always hunting for the best viewing angles and proximity, I feel that Andre doesn’t  do that enough

RH at 2015-12-21 22:05:14

Yellow CardWhat was Otamendi thinking of when he made that crude challenge on Giroud?

RH at 2015-12-21 22:02:05

The second half has started!

RH at 2015-12-21 21:55:02

A solid first half for Andre Marriner and his team, the Referee has tried to extract the maximum football from the game, even at one stage allowing two careless challenges to take place in the pursuit of advantages, which both I and Arsene Wenger didn’t approve of. However Andre’s card management and recognition of offences is sound, with particular praise due for allowing the game to continue as some committed challenges came in during the build up play to Arsenals second goal. Andre hasn’t been stretched too much as most attacking plays build up slowly due to absence of high pressing from both teams. Both Assistants are solid also, although I feel that John Brooks could have intervened following a Kolarov challenge on Campbell. But all things considered not a bad first half with no baggage being carried into the second half

RH at 2015-12-21 21:47:20

Half Time

RH at 2015-12-21 21:46:32

GOAL!Giroud adds a second for Arsenal!

RH at 2015-12-21 21:45:26

A minimum of 1 minute added time

RH at 2015-12-21 21:44:57

John Brooks getting it spot on as Ozil is offside wide on the left

RH at 2015-12-21 21:44:01

Andre Marriner always works hard to keep that all important 180 degree face on to play to obtain the widest angle and view of play, he just needs to move in and get a little bit closer in the final third sometimes

RH at 2015-12-21 21:40:20

RH at 2015-12-21 21:38:32

Campbell goes to ground holding his face following a hand off from Kolarov right in front of Assistant John Brooks, I’m not sure if the contact merited a caution, but with a decent view of the incident I’m surprised that the Assistant didn’t flag for a free kick!

RH at 2015-12-21 21:35:38

Just before that first caution I felt that the Referee was unwise to play a second advantage following two foul challenges on Campbell, the tempo rose immediately and Silva got carried away and earned a caution, I feel that unless that second advantage had played Campbell into a nailed on attacking position, he should have blown up the second time

RH at 2015-12-21 21:33:39

GOAL!Walcott makes it 1-0 Arsenal

RH at 2015-12-21 21:32:09

Yellow CardSilva picks up the first card of the game, persistently infringing the laws with several careless challenges

RH at 2015-12-21 21:29:47

Silva brings down Flamini, when play gets concentrated in that middle third there is always the risk of a careless challenge

RH at 2015-12-21 21:26:49

Koloarov fells Ozil as Arsenal mount a promising counter attack, again resisting calls for a yellow card, if you want a low card count in a game then this is the level of Referee involvement that you’ll see, I have to say that taking into account the match tempo he’s not taking a risk in this game

RH at 2015-12-21 21:22:55

Giroud goes to ground but Andre Marriner is unimpressed!

RH at 2015-12-21 21:19:36

The absence of high pressing so far by both teams means that attacking play is either wide of a slow build up, either way thats containable for the Referee who can get into good attacking positions and the Assistants don’t get tested too much with those pin point passes down the channels that can result in offside errors

RH at 2015-12-21 21:16:11

Both teams now using width so the whole dynamic of the game changes for the match officials!

RH at 2015-12-21 21:14:17

De Bruyne getting the benefit of the doubt as he hauls down Walcott, early card management from the Referee!

RH at 2015-12-21 21:12:06

With play concentrated in the middle third of the field of play, the Assistants need to fully focussed as both teams seek to release an attacking through the channels

RH at 2015-12-21 21:09:13

Ramsey and Silva exchanging careless tackles and rightly conceding free kicks in both cases

RH at 2015-12-21 21:08:19

The deliberate attacking build up has enabled the Referee to be in good positions for the early attacking moves in the final third

RH at 2015-12-21 21:06:16

A tentative few minutes to open the game, nothing to test the match officials so far!

RH at 2015-12-21 21:02:27

As viewed by the TV pictures Assistant Mick McDonough  is on the far side whilst John Brooks is operating on the nearside

RH at 2015-12-21 21:00:12

Our match Referee Andre Marriner gets us underway!

RH at 2015-12-21 20:57:11

Today’s Match Referee is Andre Marriner. His Assistant Referees are John Brooks and Mick McDonough, The Fourth Official is Craig Pawson

RH at 2015-12-21 20:51:11

It’s another Monday night cracker as our two teams tonight seek to close the gap on leaders Leicester! Its second placed Arsenal hosting third placed Manchester City!
