Tune in to this week’s The Ref Show Part 1 & 2 where we have Alan Biggs in the chair who always gets to the heart of the matter by his unique probing and subtle asking of questions from our experts. YATR is all about education and training of match officials and also those interested in refereeing decisions and key moments during Matches. Offside is an area that is well covered (and after tonight`s incorrect offside call against Ramsey`s good goal) and the discussions that occur from these key match incidents are all about gaining knowledge, skills and improving performance and there is no other refereeing web site better equipped than us to deliver this fantastic product!

Full time reflections

AM at 2015-08-24 22:22:41

Michael Oliver has overall given a terrific man management match control performance – make no mistake as I mentioned at half time this was a big game and one of the top matches as a referee and assistant you would be delighted to receive.

The real positives in Michael`s performance were as we discussed at half time and were as seen as the 2nd half progressed.

Fitness, movement and stamina right to the very end of this game as I have highlighted in my BLOG. He also read all key match incidents very well and he upped his tempo as the game increased in intensity in the 2nd half and a goal was needed to open up the game. 4 yellow cards were correctly shown during an intense spell as Michael retained his composure and remained consistent in reading play and showing the yellow card.

But as I have discussed with you in my BLOG despite Liverpool`s dominance there was only one goal scored tonight and incorrectly ruled out through a poor judgement by one of our top FIFA Assistant Referees Simon Bennett. Another poor piece of lining has decided the outcome of this game. Assistant Referees on The Premier League are just not delivering correct straight forward Offside Judgements which is their key area. Lining is an art in itself and training and intense coaching and review is urgently required based upon what we are currently viewing week in week out at this highest level in the World. The players on the Premier League are the best in the World but we have not got Assistant Referees matching this, not any where near. This needs to be rectified.

John Brooks gave what I would call a performance where I felt that he could and should of become more involved. The yellow card incident for Gomez for example right in front of him no flag seen and all the players did was to say well the lino did not flag. You loose credibility as an Assistant and you loose the teamwork ethic it gives the impression of uncertainty which we don’t want to see at this or any level.

ck to Arsenal as they press for a winner

90 + 2

MO again right there as play breaks from end to end what stamina seen to finish the game upon

90 + 4

AM at 2015-08-24 21:48:11

We have just viewed a replay of Benteke and Gabriel challenging for the ball in the Arsenal penalty area, my feeling here is that there is some pulling and tugging from both players and MO correct in this situation as he keeps play moving

AM at 2015-08-24 21:46:02

Referee does well to stop play here to check on Oxlade – Chamberlain head injury right to stop play immediately despite what the crowd think, player safety paramount

AM at 2015-08-24 21:44:49

Benteke reckless use of his arm on Chambers head he could count himself fortunate to have not received a yellow card here

Liverpool sub 10 off 18

AM at 2015-08-24 21:42:31

Good viewing angles achieved by MO from cks

Mignolet Yellow Carddeliberate time wasting and he has already been spoken to by the referee

AM at 2015-08-24 21:40:27

Assistant Referees – One thing I am also noticing is the reluctance of assistant referees to support their colleague with free kick awards, what are your thoughts?

Let us know what you think by contacting us on either on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at

AM at 2015-08-24 21:38:47

Arsenal sub 34 off 15 on – Arsenal pressing here for a win make no mistake about that

AM at 2015-08-24 21:37:39

Yellow CardGomez 12 spot on – pity that John Brooks could not have assisted here? it was right in front of him and one of those situations when you expect to see a flag indication particularly for a yellow card offence

AM at 2015-08-24 21:35:56

Good advantage to Liverpool again good reading of play in allowing this advantage. Good use by MO at dead ball time to have a quiet word with Benteke, well done, these areas are not often seen but quietly effective

AM at 2015-08-24 21:32:41

Liverpool – 21 off 46 on further changes to patterns of play will now be seen with 15 minutes to go

AM at 2015-08-24 21:30:26

With the tempo up now the referee is upping his tempo as well, great spot no penalty to Arsenal. In another challenge as Giroud goes down in a challenge with Lucas, pace has caught Giroud here in the challenge and the leap in the air probably does not help matters

Arsenal sub 12 off 14 on

AM at 2015-08-24 21:27:18

Thanks Michael Owen for your observations on the Ramsey goal incorrectly ruled out good to see that you are enjoying the web site and taking the time to agree with our judgement

AM at 2015-08-24 21:24:08

Yellow CardCan of Liverpool, MO is now increasing his authority and consistency in the showing of his yellow cards. Important point of the game, tempo is up

AM at 2015-08-24 21:22:43

Yellow CardGabriel holding offence in an unsporting manner. Again no surprise as the tempo increases

AM at 2015-08-24 21:21:37

Again as the balls pings around in the penalty you have to be mentally and physically fit to make your judgements. ONE INCORRECT KMI JUDGEMENT HERE AND THE GAME TURNS AGAINST YOU

AM at 2015-08-24 21:19:34

Liverpool sub 11 off 33 on, change in the pattern of play will be on the offical`s minds here

AM at 2015-08-24 21:18:30

Yellow Card37 Sketel well no surprise there and fully expected. You cannot manage those as a referee

AM at 2015-08-24 21:17:16

MO will be aware of any time delay tactics by Liverpool

AM at 2015-08-24 21:15:29

Mignolet and Milner spoken to by the referee this is positive and effective man management, keep your cards in your pocket to use as and when is needed!

AM at 2015-08-24 21:13:46

No free kick again MO is well placed to judge. We have just seen JB with both hands on the flag in a close situation in a crouched and unnatural position. He needs to relax and keep himself upright. This improves your overall periphery

AM at 2015-08-24 21:09:53

Offside – we really need to discuss and highlight why there is so many key match errors at the start of this season. Coaching is badly required, review of errors, concentration, mental and physical fitness these are our high performers not only in this country but world wide, we need to be setting an example,. Get out on the field Assistants and let us see an increase in training schedules!

AM at 2015-08-24 21:06:42

Again a minor trip by Gomez who can only give a stare at MO no dissent such is the deep down respect the players have for MO he looks the part

AM at 2015-08-24 21:04:44

Good judgement by MO Liverpool THROW IN SHORT BLAST OF THE WHISTLE AND HAND / ARM signal effective management

2nd half underway

AM at 2015-08-24 21:01:34

Michael blows his whistle and we are underway for the 2nd half

Half time reflections

AM at 2015-08-24 21:00:44

Make no mistake this is one of your top high profile games of the season. Michael Oliver has been selected on merit for this appointment and throughout the first half he has displayed a first class performance. His key attributes have been his high fitness levels, which has helped him to achieve good viewing angles and proximity to play. Concentration and mental fitness in his judgement of such tight penalty kick non kicks has been outstanding. Keep an eye on these positive areas in the 2nd half.

Simon Bennett has had a number of offside judgements and the key judgement to rule out Ramsey`s goal was incorrect. Simon could have used the edge of the penalty area lines to assist him here and it so disappointing to report on yet another incorrect KMI offside decision from one of our top FIFA Officials. Keith Hackett has made calls for video replay and this would have been an ideal opportunity as play was not affected in the move to the goal. A quick review would have allowed the goal to stand and I am sure Simon would have welcomed another look to have helped him in this situation.

John Brooks has overall judged offsides to an acceptable level just the one as I mentioned in my BLOG were he could have held it down.

More of the first half in the 2nd half please Michael. Keep your eyes on his refereeing performance.

AM at 2015-08-24 20:45:33

Coutinho hits the post following a great save again from Cech,

Ramsey offside from SB

AM at 2015-08-24 20:42:51

Another offside against Liverpool Benteke correct from JB

AM at 2015-08-24 20:41:41

Foul by Lucas on Ozil. MO right there to award good use of whistle totally accepted by the players. They have real respect for Michael tonight.

AM at 2015-08-24 20:40:07

As Arsenal loose possession in defence, a great chance for Benteke, but what a save from Cech and another great save as we see another ck

AM at 2015-08-24 20:37:50

Offside flag from JB when in this situation the flag could have been held down as the player was moving back and non active in play.

Arsenal offside from SB

AM at 2015-08-24 20:35:33

No offside against Liverpool from JB but how is that any different from Simon Bennett`s incorrect offside flag against Ramsey shown earlier in the game to rule out a good goal –

AM at 2015-08-24 20:33:15

Arsenal Offside from SB – raised arm from MO to restart play this indicates an indirect free kick to Liverpool

AM at 2015-08-24 20:32:00

Good advantage to Liverpool keep an eye on the correct use of MO`s arms as he keeps on the move

AM at 2015-08-24 20:30:40

keep a close eye on the positive attributes that Michael displays in his refereeing performances – his management and respect shown towards players (interaction during play) movement and buzzing around the field of play, authority, his use of advantage and his judgment of key match incidents.

AM at 2015-08-24 20:27:47

Corner kick to Liverpool keep an eye out for any grappling and for an update on this topic have a look at Hacketts BLOG

AM at 2015-08-24 20:25:38

Again an Milner closes in on goal did you notice MO taking a wide view and angle across the penalty area

AM at 2015-08-24 20:24:17

No penalty kick again to Liverpool very close margins for the referee to call but his judgement for such a close call is very good, created by a good proximity and viewing angle

AM at 2015-08-24 20:22:14

Gomes gives away a foul MO blows his whistle and did you notice how calm and purposefully he moves away, followed by another holding offence by Giroud

AM at 2015-08-24 20:20:32

Milner careless challenge I think he was too eager to get the ball a sterner blast of the whistle from MO had the desired effect as it made Milner immediately apologise

AM at 2015-08-24 20:17:08

Offside Benteke coming back flagged by JB

AM at 2015-08-24 20:16:29

MO achieves a good angle and view to ensure no penalty kick to Liverpool, reading of play to date is first class. We have viewed about 6 replays of this incident the referee only has one and he has to get into the best view to achieve this kmi

AM at 2015-08-24 20:14:02

What is happening this season? we have seen so many incorrect offside decisions when the attacker is level. A training issue is urgently required.

Let us know what you think by contacting us on either on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at

AM at 2015-08-24 20:12:13

No free kick and look how close MO is to play to just shake his head and on we go, players accept it much more if you are close to play

AM at 2015-08-24 20:10:35

Incorrect Offside decision from Simon Bennett having just made a good decision he rules out a good goal for Arsenal scored by Ramsey. The lines of the penalty area clearly could have helped him here. Another offside incorrect key match decision that has been made this season.

AM at 2015-08-24 20:08:23

Offside – Arsenal correct from Simon Bennett on the Technical Area touchline as the Arsenal player comes back from an offside position to become active with play

AM at 2015-08-24 20:06:28

Michael is achieving good viewing angles, movement and also showing a good early positive body language

AM at 2015-08-24 20:04:11

Offside flag Liverpool –  from far side AR John Brooks not picked up on replay

AM at 2015-08-24 20:02:37

Good early close proximity to play achieved by Michael

Kick off

AM at 2015-08-24 20:00:33

In Glenn Turner’s BLOG on the previous Saturday and his final summary of Michael Oliver`s last Premier League Refereeing Performance at Southampton v Everton was as follows:

” However, the real winners and certainly the best team on the field of play today was that of the referees.

Michael Oliver led superbly from the front and referee with real empathy, understanding and class.

From his very early no-penalty call through to the 90th minute he was faultless all day.”

Pre Match

AM at 2015-08-24 19:38:42

A very good evening and welcome to this live REF CAM Commentary game. The game is being played at The Emirates Stadium in London. Which sees Arsenal after their opening day home defeat to West Ham look to build upon their subsequent good form against Crystal Palace with an away victory whilst they entertain a Liverpool team looking to continue on their opening 2 victories albeit somewhat fortunate against Bournemouth last Monday night with 2 contentious goals. In the corresponding game last season on Saturday 04.04.2015 we saw Arsenal win by 4 goals to 1.
