Palace frustrated Arsenal and chased every ball in a real attempt to secure a draw away from home. Arsenal were far from their best but managed to grind out a result with goals from set plays in time added on at the end of both halves. Palace shocked them by taking the lead, again from a set play.
From the referee’s angle 2 cautions to Arsenal and 3 to Palace, with Puncheon receiving a second yellow and therefore a RED for his late tackle. No one could argue with his actions. His style today was to keep a low profile, and not imposing himself on the game, which did lead to certain frustrations for the Arsenal players. Their play was broken up by petty fouls committed by Palace players and I was surprised that Chamakh was not cautioned earlier and he was also very lucky not to be penalised for a hand ball in the second half. Did the referee tire towards the end of the game, I leave you to decide but he will be glad to get this one out of the way. I think he needs to be more authoritative with time wasting tactics and take proactive steps early to prevent petty fouls spoiling the game. He needs to work on his fitness and movement as I thought he was rather pedestrian at times and remained rather central. His colleagues were sound in their judgements, looked agile with good sideways movement. Flagging technique looked first class and the 4th official complimented the team well. Just a few things to work on as the season progresses, but Jon controlled the game and brought it to a successful conclusion.

RD at 2014-08-16 19:09:18
Good advantage to Arsenal but game is very scrappy at present.
RD at 2014-08-16 19:08:09
Kelly now struggling with cramp. Watch for Alexis getting more of the ball as Kelly is on a caution. Will this be a tactic that Wenger will use. Referee needs to be aware of this possibility.

Spray works this time. Well done.
RD at 2014-08-16 19:05:21

RD at 2014-08-16 19:03:21
27 Delaney on, so must have been an injury.
RD at 2014-08-16 19:02:14
Clash between Hangeland and Giroud in penalty area – Moss not interested. Players need to be careful however as the game moves into the final period.
Dann injured but are these time wasting tactics? Genuine injury?
RD at 2014-08-16 18:58:57
Corner kick to Arsenal – followed by another.
Pressure now on with 20 minutes to go. Concentration needed now by officials.
RD at 2014-08-16 18:57:13
15 Oxlade-Chamberlain on for Wilshere.
RD at 2014-08-16 18:56:18
Chamakh was lucky not to concede a penalty kick as the incident was in the penalty area. it is amazing how such a low key game always turns up incidents.
Now he commits another foul and Moss cautions him for his persistent infringements of the laws of the game.Quite right. Well done.
RD at 2014-08-16 18:54:09
Alexis now gives away another foul but it appears that Chamakh is playing for it and the referee buys it.
RD at 2014-08-16 18:53:09
Corner kick leads to nothing but then free kick for push on Fraizer to Palace.
RD at 2014-08-16 18:52:14

RD at 2014-08-16 18:36:49
Corner to Palace – nothing happened. Good advantage Arsenal but referee goes back to caution Puncheon when play breaks down. Well done.
RD at 2014-08-16 18:33:00
The referee starts the second half –
RD at 2014-08-16 18:28:08
This has been a half of frustration for the Arsenal fans as their team has had much more of the possession, only to see their team go 1-0 down from the only chance created by Palace. Fortunately, a lack of concentration at a free kick in time added on and the Arsenal equalised. It will be an interesting team talk for both Managers. From the referee’s angle this has been a game where he has been able to let the players get on with things but he needs to take early action in the second half if Palace maintain their time wasting tactics. This could easily escalate as could spoiling tactics come into the Palace game as they become tired. This is the time when the referee needs to impose his authority on the game and show his mettle. Another point of interest will come in the later stages of his game regarding fitness as he is not on the elite list of referees on the Premier League. Let’s see how he copes with the demands of the game, in the second half. I am also sure he will be practising his spray in the dressing room and not as a shaving foam! One caution so far, correctly awarded and issued. Assistant Referees have been sound.
RD at 2014-08-16 18:18:19
Corner to Arsenal comes to nothing and the referee blows for half time. Score is equal 1-1.
RD at 2014-08-16 18:16:41

RD at 2014-08-16 18:12:18
Referee correctly speaks to Arteta concerning his fould.
Arsenal want to get on with things and take a quick free kick. Puncheon then fouls Debuchy. Here comes the spray.
Moss has a problem with the spray. Has he had a practice beforehand?
RD at 2014-08-16 18:09:49
Most noticeable as Keith Millen claps every good challenge by his tea. So far his team set up has been fine.
Arsenal contingent getting frustrated.
RD at 2014-08-16 18:07:59
Another corner to Arsenal, nothing materialises.
RD at 2014-08-16 18:06:55

RD at 2014-08-16 18:00:46

RD at 2014-08-16 17:53:52
Alexis penalised much to the disappointment of the Arsenal fans.
RD at 2014-08-16 17:52:33
Nice little advantage in mid field to Arsenal. Correct signal. Referee only getting involved when he needs to, letting it breathe. Well done.
RD at 2014-08-16 17:51:04
The Arsenal fans are already sensing time wasting tactics by Palace. Jon needs to nip this in the bud. Goal kicks and throw ins especially.
RD at 2014-08-16 17:49:22
I have already mentioned how Palace are defending and this means that the referee must concentrate on any break that Palace achieve through Fraizer Campbell as he has real pace.
RD at 2014-08-16 17:44:52
First corner, look out for the grappling!
RD at 2014-08-16 17:44:20
Another quick free kick for Arsenal.
RD at 2014-08-16 17:43:50

Referee just letting the game develop in front of him but he needs to get out of the player’s space.
Foul by Arteta correctly given.
RD at 2014-08-16 17:40:14
Arsenal putting the pressure on and Palace just happy to defend deep. Will this cost them.
RD at 2014-08-16 17:38:24
Penalty appeal by Arsenal but Dann just holds his ground – no penalty given – correct decision. Jon must watch staying central though outside penalty area.
RD at 2014-08-16 17:35:56
First five minutes game has not settled down just yet.
RD at 2014-08-16 17:33:56
Alexis pulled down by Hangeland, easy decision for Jon Moss.
RD at 2014-08-16 17:31:04
Quick free kick to Arsenal
RD at 2014-08-16 17:30:09
The referee gets the game underway
RD at 2014-08-16 17:26:55
To-day’s referee is Jon Moss, and his assistants are Lee Betts and Mark Scholes, with Bobby Madley, 4th official.
Last season Jon officiated in 23 games awarding 511 free kicks, 9 penalties, 72 cautions and 3 send offs.
This will be a challenging game for our colleagues and we wish them all well as the season gets underway for them all.
RD at 2014-08-16 16:56:49
Good afternoon and welcome to the Emirates Stadium for today’s second London ‘derby,’ after West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur played each other earlier in the day, with an away win for the Spurs.
The playing surface, at this stadium, looks absolutely magnificent, as always, and the crowd of some 60,000 will be anxious for their respective team to get off to a winning start,
Crystal Palace, who lost their Manager, Tony Pulis, on Thursday, would not have bargained for that in their build up to this difficult game against Arsenal, so Keith Millen steps up to the plate to see if he can motivate his players to pull off an historic win.
Arsenal will be without some of their World Cup players, but close season signings have made them a formidable outfit again.
Arsenal will want to build on their FA Challenge Cup victory of last season and their recent Community Shield success, with a home win, hopefully to secure some more silverware in the forthcoming campaign.
Will Arsenal win the Premier League, the Champions League, retain the FA Challenge Cup or add the Capital One trophy to their collection this year?
Will Palace start as they left off last season with a string of good results or will the disappointment of losing their inspirational leader still figure heavily on their minds?
