FULL TIME SUMMARY

RCT at 2017-08-06 16:24:33

Bobby has controlled this game with credibility and consistency, he quite correctly in the first half had the need to show 4 yellow cards 3 for Chelsea and 1 for Arsenal all were consistent and correct. Bobby`s personality displayed today showed his confidence and development as a referee moving into the top handful of referees in our country today. He showed clear and positive communication signals, good body language and displayed that he is a calm and unflustered referee and that his style of movement maintains an untroubled and controlled mind set. His fitness and movement today was as good as I have seen and the key moment in the first half was the yellow card shown to Willian, replays show that there was the slightest minimal contact on Willian , not enough for me for a penalty kick to Chelsea and in real time the caution for Willian is correct. We don't have the benefit of VAR as yet and on review the only change in this decision may have been achieved would have been not to show a yellow card to Willian?

In the 2nd half the only main talking / discussion point was Pedro`s red card - the challenge was made with excessive force when Pedro exceeded the necessary use of force and this excessive force challenge endangered the safety of an Arsenal Player. Bobby has set the tone for the season, now other referees have to follow this and be consistent in their reading of challenges similar to this one today.

Both Assistant Referees have carried out their duties effectively and with a calmness and good reading of their key area - offside.

Well done to Bobby and Team you have set a high standard for the season ahead.

Penalty Kicks - Arsenal 4 Chelsea 1

RCT at 2017-08-06 16:11:48

Oxlade - Chamberlain scores and then Giroud scores to make it 4-1 to Arsenal.

Arsenal win the Community Shield on penalty kicks and to clarify in the new penalty format the first team takes the penalty kick and then the next team takes 2 penalty kicks and so on. Just think ABBA.

What did you think of the new penalty format?

Penalty Kicks

RCT at 2017-08-06 16:02:29

There is a change in format for this season ABBA

1 PENALTY KICK TO ONE SIDE THEN 2 PENALTY KICKS TO THE OTHER SIDE THEN BACK TO 1 PENALTY KICK AND SO

Just think ABBA - the Swedish pop group - take a chance on me! the players will be asking..

RCT at 2017-08-06 15:50:34

Bobby has a calming word with Conte as the Manager voices his dissent towards him. This would have been communicated to him by Graham Scott 4th Official.

Red Card

Pedro receives a red card following that last challenge which was reckless and with excessive force and has endangered the safety of his opponent. Bobby had a great view and had no hesitation in showing when Pedro eventually got to his feet sensing this outcome.

70

RCT at 2017-08-06 15:35:26

Kolasinac careless and he is correctly penalised by Bobby. In his mindset Bobby must be pleased how this game has developed from a management point of view. Four yellow cards in the first half have aided his overall match control with 20 minutes remaining

69

RCT at 2017-08-06 15:32:47

Simon correctly raises his flag in the air to indicate the Chelsea player offside - confirmed on replay and a good judgement.

68

RCT at 2017-08-06 15:31:41

FK to Chelsea again look at the body language and communication signal seen from Bobby - positive and confident with an air of authority. Players are also accepting of the decision when they see such a positive signal.

Moses foul throw in correctly penalised by Bobby

62

RCT at 2017-08-06 15:25:29

Simon indicates with a flag signal a fk to Arsenal - such is Bobby`s reading of play - this is the first fk indicated by an Assistant today.

60

RCT at 2017-08-06 15:24:07

Lacazette is flagged offside from Constantine as when the ball is played he is offside and clearly active (interfering with an opponent)

57

RCT at 2017-08-06 15:21:48

Good non offside flag from Constantine as the Arsenal player moves back from an offside position, but he does not become active.

54

RCT at 2017-08-06 15:18:53

Arsenal CK and as play moves into the Chelsea penalty area, Bobby blows his whistle for a foul by Lacazette on Coutois. There are also head injuries for David Luiz and Cahill. Physio`s quickly allowed onto field of play.

52

RCT at 2017-08-06 15:15:07

Pedro careless on Xhaka - good whistle AND arm signal clear communication to all.

Chelsea Goal

RCT at 2017-08-06 15:14:06

Bobby has achieved a very good viewing position, did you notice his focus and concentration on the replay?

Chelsea Goal

RCT at 2017-08-06 15:12:12

Simon has done well in his non offside call at this goal. There were Chelsea players in offside positions but not active and they would have been in his eyeline as he views into the bright sunlight.

Half Time Summary

RCT at 2017-08-06 15:06:23

For me to half time Bobby has controlled this game with credibility and he has consistently shown 4 yellow cards to date 3 for Chelsea and 1 for Arsenal all consistent and correct. Bobby`s personality displays that he is a calm and unflustered referee and that his style of movement maintains an untroubled and controlled mind set. The key moment was the yellow card shown to Willian, replays show that there was the slightest minimal contact on Willian , not enough for me for a penalty kick to Chelsea and in real time the caution for Willian is correct. We don't have the benefit of VAR as yet and on review the only change in this decision that may have been achieved would have been not to show a yellow card to Willian.

Both Assistants have supported Bobby very well to date and just the one offside decision against Chelsea has halted play.

3 minutes minimum of added time

44

RCT at 2017-08-06 14:47:19

Again Bobby has shown a good turn on pace in that last Arsenal attack, this is an area that I have been impressed with to date.

Closing stages of the first half

RCT at 2017-08-06 14:46:06

Important now for Bobby to keep focussed and consistent, miss little and to bring the first half home safely.

38

RCT at 2017-08-06 14:41:15

Willian Yellow Cardfor an act of simulation in the Arsenal penalty area.

34

RCT at 2017-08-06 14:30:54

Quick early stoppage by Bobby as Mertesacker receives an accidental blow to the head from Cahill

25

RCT at 2017-08-06 14:29:21

Calming words from Bobby with Marcos A. of Chelsea following that last challenge on Lacazette

24

RCT at 2017-08-06 14:27:19

Again good movement and sprint seen from Bobby in that last Arsenal attack as he moves across the field of play into the left channel.

22

RCT at 2017-08-06 14:26:05

Good movement, position and angle seen from Bobby as Lacazette hits the post for Arsenal.

19

RCT at 2017-08-06 14:24:50

Further fk to Arsenal as Bobby keeps a tight lid on the game, he is missing little and maybe on the Bellerin tackle the only point for consideration could be was it wise to attempt to play the advantage to Chelsea? bearing in mind the severity of the challenge and right in front of the Technical Areas? one to consider, have you any thoughts?

Good leading from Bobby to Simon in that last throw in to Arsenal, did you notice how his arm led the direction and a look towards Simon to follow.

Very warm conditions today

RCT at 2017-08-06 14:09:01

Todays conditions will be an added factor for all match officials and also for the Assistants as they view into the sun / shade for their key area of offside decisions.

2

RCT at 2017-08-06 14:07:04

Good early management from Bobby in the management of that throw in.

Today`s Referee and Team

RCT at 2017-08-06 13:53:03

No stranger to Wembley Stadium, Bobby Madley will referee today`s FA Community Shield between Arsenal and Chelsea.

Bobby Madley was the fourth official in May when the London rivals met in The Emirates F A Cup Final, though his first appearance at the national stadium dates back to 2007.

The West Riding official was an assistant referee when England met Spain in an Under-16 international and Madley, then 21 years old, said at the time: “Just to appear once at Wembley is a dream, especially with the new stadium. I’m told there could be anything between 20,000 and 35,000 there.”

Bigger crowds were to come for Bobby Madley, who began officiating in 2002.

He was elected to the select group of Premier League officials from the 2013-14 season and added to the FIFA international list in January 2016.

Madley served as fourth official in the 2016 EFL Cup Final and took charge of the Championship play-off final later that season between Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday.

Simon Bennett (Staffordshire FA) and Constantine Hatzidakis (Kent FA) will be Madley’s assistant referees, proceeds from which will be donated to support those affected by the Grenfell Tower Fire.

Graham Scott (Berks & Bucks FA) has been appointed as the fourth official and Edward Smart (Birmingham FA) has been named reserve assistant referee.
