Although this game is very much low tempo as the home side press for another goal, the Match Officials must remain focussed as the third goal is all important in a 2-0 contest!

RH at 2017-10-01 13:17:07

Assistant Ian Hussin still the busier of the two at the moment as Arsenal press on for a third!

Kevin Friend just getting in the way again as Arsenal built an attack in the final third, he needs to get behind the attacking line as he did in the later stages of the first half!

48

RH at 2017-10-01 13:06:54

A good flag there from Ian Hussin as Sanchez carelessly challenged Duffy on the goal line

The second half has started!

RH at 2017-10-01 12:55:10

A solid first half for Kevin Friend and his team, he’s judged his involvement level well and issued two good cautions one for dissent and one for a Reckless Challenge, the only such tackle of the game so far. The only point I made regarding a further caution was for Dunk’s deliberate ploy to buy time and shove Cech when the big defender came up for a corner and needed to get back into position. Other than that Kevin has looked more comfortable with his final third positioning as the game has progressed. Just one fortunate moment when nothing resulted from a Brighton corner after it appeared that Bellerin had kept the ball in play. But overall the Referee has built a good platform for the second half. Finally credit to Stuart Burt for a great call that the ball had been kept in play before Arsenal scored

45

RH at 2017-10-01 12:45:25

A minimum of one minute additional time to be played

42

RH at 2017-10-01 12:43:12

Its suddenly end to end as both teams counter attack and if it keeps to 1-0 at half time Brighton have showed enough to suggest that they will score in the second half, all still to play for!

40

RH at 2017-10-01 12:41:07

Just before that Duffy caution we saw another close ball in/out of play call on the goal line as Bruno cleared for Brighton with play being allowed to continue

39

Yellow CardA Reckless challenge by Duffy on Sanchez rightly earns the offender a caution!

Assistant Ian Hussin flags Brown offside, although correct the Referee could have played an advantaged with the home side in possession

32

A silly confrontation between Xhaka and the Referee over the placing of the ball at that ceremonial free kick, Kevin Friend wisely backing off acting again after the Arsenal player moved the ball a final time!

The Match officials were fortunate that nothing became of that last Brighton corner, as it appeared that Bellerin had kept the ball in play

25

RH at 2017-10-01 12:26:13

The game is certainly more open now as Brighton are counter attacking and suddenly there is space!

RH at 2017-10-01 12:22:28

Dunk shoves Cech in the back as the Goalkeeper is about to clear the ball upfield, with Dunk hopelessly out of position that’s a cautionable challenge in my view as he deliberate stopped play to get back into his defensive position, I saw an Oldham player do the same thing yesterday at Portsmouth, that needs eradicating from the game!

7

RH at 2017-10-01 12:08:19

As I suspected, the Referee has got to be careful here not to get ahead of the attacking line when Arsenal are camped in the Brighton half in the final third

RH at 2017-10-01 12:02:18

The play there going behind the Referee’s back. Should be interesting from a tactical perspective today, Chris Hughton is well known in the game for getting his teams to maintain a disciplined formation and in particular defending in two rows of four. So with Arsenal likely to enjoy long periods of possession it is important that our Match Referee Kevin Friend will gives thought to his positioning when the Gunners are on the attack so as not to get in the way of play but be able to move quickly into position in the final third and penalty area to get those all-important key match incident viewing angles

RH at 2017-10-01 12:00:48

If you are watching the game on TV, Ian Hussin is operating on the far side and the other Assistant Stuart Burt is running the nearside touch line.

The following is an extract from the ‘Premier League Referees in Week#’ feature that appears on the You are The Ref website ahead of each Premier League Weeks action!

KEVIN FRIEND Assistants: S Burt & I Hussin Fourth official: Roger East

There have only been 15 meetings in total between these two, and that includes three consecutive away wins for Arsenal in the FA Cup during their relative domination of that competition.

The last league encounter, however, was way back in February, 1983, ending 3-1 to Arsenal at Highbury, and attracting a frankly disappointing turn-out of under 18,000.

Islington-born Raphael Meade’s last three years as a pro were spent between Goldstone Ground and more exotic climes still, playing 43 times in two spells, having scored twice against The Seagulls in that last league game between these two.

Other players in common have been Steve Gatting, who is back at Arsenal in charge of the under-23s, and Steve Sidwell, while Ian Wright failed his Brighton trial and went back to the building site. Former Gunners boss Terry Neill has actually lived in Brighton since selling the sports bar he ran in High Holborn throughout the nineties.

Today’s referee, Kevin Friend, was AAR to Andre Marriner in St Petersburg in midweek, while assistant Ian Hussin was in Tel Aviv with Craig Pawson.

All you need to know about Kevin Friend:

Matches in 2017/18: 2 (1 on TV) Fourth official appointments in 2017/18: 5

After Sunday success for both these teams last weekend Arsenal and Brighton will be keen to build on the feel good factor. Arsenal could finish the weekend on a useful thirteen points which would see them maintain ground on the leaders. On the other hand a win for the visitors would see them haul in ten points which would propel them into the top half of the table, so it’s all to play for at the Emirates today!
